How volatile and flammable is WD40 ruclips.net/video/pZckKiBqYuQ/видео.html
its as flammable or less flammable as zambucca. In other words fly spray is worse.
More importantly, don't have 50 keys on your chain. Extra weight will damage the lock for sure.
Good point👍
Best comment. Came here for a solution. Read your comment took all the weight off the key and it turn smoothly every turn now.
Hi everyone, just to clarify, my ignition barrel seized up almost leaving me stranded. It’s a twenty year old car. I had a can of wd40, sprayed it in and it got me back on the road. It’s not a long term fix, but it will get you on the road. Thanks for watching👍👍👍
Very thankful for you posting this video. I put my key in the ignition, and it felt like it was sticking. Got the WD-40, and it was like new 👍👍
thank you for the video I had to do that yesterday.
I used it on a 2007 Chevy Equinox when the steering wheel became hard to turn. it helped to unstick the ignition lock and the steering wheel loosened.. My mechanic said I was lucky. I didn't tell him that I had done it 2yrs before. rack and pinion repair is needed but unfortunately that is costly. I better start saving for a "new to me " car.
Spray some graphite grease in there. Might help it long term. Changing parts like that on old cars, is not really cost effective. I had an old Honda, I just kept it greased up. WD got me back on the road, when it jammed up. Glad it helped you.
This happened to my Ford Explorer right after I got off of my shift. I couldn't turn the key at all. Tried a few tricks that were listed on Google. Nothing worked. Decided to look on RUclips and found this video. I read the comments about not using WD 40 (which was what I had on me). I sprayed the key (not the keyhole) and flung the excess off. Inserted the key and let it sit for about 30 seconds and gave it try. At first it didn't work, so I sprayed the key again, this time leaving a little bit of WD 40 on the key. Tried again and it turned over. Got me out of a bind during a snow day. Thanks for the tip! I will be sure to use automotive ignition lubricant from here on out though.
This is exactly why I posted it. It’s fairly controversial, but it’s saved a few people from the long walk home. But yes ignition lube is a long term must. Glad it helped.
Thank you! The ignition on my 1995 corolla was sticking an getting a little worse each day. Today, I couldn't turn it for love nor money. Used the WD 40 as suggested and Bob's your uncle! Smooth as silk. A thank you from Vancouver, BC :-)
Glad it got you sorted, it might be worth putting some graphite grease in there. Seems to be a common grease to use. Hopefully it will stay good for you. Thanks for watching.👍
Thanks. I’ll have a look for that.
I'm a plumber I know nothing about ignition my mechanic told me I need a new ignition set. I watched this and my key turns as it should. Thanks
Great news, get some graphite grease and grease it up. WD is just a short term fix. Glad this video helped.👍👍
@@drivewaydiyer6504 Thanks .
Nice one mate, i had the same problem used something similar to Wd-40 and it did the trick.
Great news.👍
Your a life saver work van decided to play up . The ignition would not turn used some WD40 and keeping turn the wheel as steering wheel had locked. Will need a new ignition however all on same day as my second Covid-19 vaccine made because I watched your video 👍👏
Great news, glad it helped. Especially to a fellow Liverpool supporter.👍👍👍
Fantastic tip very informative guide!
Glad it helped you.👍👍
This worked. Thanks my friend 👍
DOOMZDAY34 great news, always worth trying the cheaper option first.👍
Awesome this worked on my elantra thank you
Great news, get some graphite grease and lube it up. Hopefully you’ll be alright for a while. Thanks for watching.👍
I went to start my car today and it switched on to the ignition then no start up but no resistance when turning key just goes straight down I didn’t try the wd but when I pulled all relevant plastics I could see the end where it’s meant to spin round it was stuck but not sticking the keys very weird had to bump the car and leave ignition on till I was able to disconnect gonna try another ignition barrel tomoz
Thanks for the vid
Sounds like an ignition switch issue. Hope you get sorted. Thanks for watching.👍
Thanks , wish I had tried the wd first someone walking by also mentioned using it I searched online and it’s quite common for a Vauxhall Meriva
I contacted the WD-40 company through their website. I asked them the simple question is WD-40 suitable for car ignitions. Their answer was that WD-40 should never be used in a cars ignition. It will collect dirt and can damage sensitive electronics. This is not my opinion this is WD-40’s answer to my quarry.
The barrel needed changing and most people have this. Got me back on the road and didn’t ruin anything. This isn’t for maintenance, the WD Freed it up. Use graphite for maintenance.👍
This is exactly right. It clams up and makes it a whole lot worse
Did ask them about the KEY switch? Or the IGNITION switch? Key switch has tumblers, Ignition switch has the electrical stuff.
Better to use a dry lubes so dirt won't stick to it
Aron Aron just a bit of WD 40, shouldn’t cause any issues. Thanks for watching👍
@@drivewaydiyer6504 a bit????? You sprayed it until it starter pouring out
Sooo my key is stuck in the on position.. gf turned the key too hard and over turned it I was able to get the key out but I need to get the lock cylinder turned back to the off position because if it’s turned over too much I loose all dash and all lights. I tried a lot already think this may help
The barrel may be beyond repair, try some graphite oil in there. But it does sound broke.
Then you sir , working for me 👍
Glad it helped👍👍👍
Make sure ya spray it all over the dash and floor like the vid shows.
Great blooper eh
Thanks your a star
Glad it helped, if it’s sticking get it checked out. 👍
Worked thanks
Great news.👍
Best oil possble. Valve oil for trumpets and trombones. No silicone no gumming. Silicone will get thick and gum up
I’ll check that out.👍 Thanks for watching.
i sprayed wd 40 in same as that,,car caught fire when wiring fused...
Wow, that’s unlucky. I’ve never had that happen in all the years I’ve used it. Maybe there was an underlying problem. Was it jammed up, before you used WD40 on it?
is it safe to spray wd40 in there ?
I’ve used wd, on all sorts. It’s very well used on damp ignition components, basically you’re lubricating the barrel. I have no concerns.
THANK YOUVERY MOCH
You’re welcome🙏
Does graphite work as well?
If you have it, then use it.👍
@@drivewaydiyer6504 where to buy it? link please?
I just spent 673 dollars on a new ignition barrel. Wish I had seen this first.
We’ll at least you’ve got a fully working barrel now. That’s alot of money for a barrel, though. I feel for you.
WD40 will attract dust and dirt which will stick to it and make things worse. Use proper lock lubricant that is meant for this.
For proper routine maintenance, I agree, for Mr/Mrs public wd is the most used lubricant and will get you moving. Thanks for watching.👍
@@drivewaydiyer6504 If it's meant to move and it can't, use WD40. If it's not meant to move and it does, use duct tape. These two things should be in everyone's car.
The best thing to do is rub a pencil on your key graphite is a great lubricant
Sounds good. Thanks for the input.👍
That's what I figured before I found this video online it was telling me to not use WD-40 cuz it can actually Gunk up and cause more contaminants to seize it up but I mean I guess if you needed it in a dire situation it would get you on the road
The chances of anyone having anything specific for ignition locks is very doubtful. But like anything, if you’re unsure, call recovery. I used this stuff for loads of things, in my old cars. Newer cars maybe more sensitive.
What about wd40 to clean then dry out with compressed air? Nah?
Wont work, its an oil based substance…
Mines pissing me off on my truck 🤣
I feel your pain.👍
WD 40 is a water and grease solvent and will break down grease in a short amount of time will make the situation worse. Use a high grade lubricate instead
Wd40 will work in the short term, I’d probably replace the barrel, long term. Graphite is good too.
Tryed it didnt work had to change barrel
Probably too far gone. Well at least you’ve got a fresh barrel, no problems now.👍
Just had the same problem put wd40 in and OK
When you get some time, put some graphite oil in it. 👍
What car is that?
Honda Civic.👍
Driveway DIYer nice! My mother had the same problem with her 1995 Honda Accord in 2010
Did you get it sorted?
Driveway DIYer yeah. It got sorted. Had to get rid of the car in 2014 because it has so many problems.
Fuel pump
Suspension
Radio
Oil
Radiation
alternator
Lots more
They just get old, had my civic for 7/8 years. Never had much go wrong, just annoying stuff.
Just did mine, key came out with all black WD 40 on it 🇦🇺
Probably a lot of crap in there. Use some graphite grease , to keep it lubed. Is it working now?
@@drivewaydiyer6504 works fine now, real smoth 🇦🇺
But why you don’t start the car to see if it really works
It did work.👌
:51 just blasts wd40 on passenger floor lol
Good video though, I am about to try this.
Bloopers aswell eh.😂😂😂cheers
Wouldn't throttle cleaner do a better job
Most people don’t have it. WD is a common household item. 👍
Could see strait away that the car you're doing this demo on is a Honda
To be honest it was a great car
Use Lithium based grease instead.
👍
Update, I've read that actually Graphite powder (pencil powder) is the best thing to use.
Totally with you, this was more for getting back on the road. Most people have WD40. Worked for me. I have graphite in my garage, most people don’t.
Use graphite lock lube, not wd 40.
That’s been established, not many people have it. Everyone has WD40. Thanks for the input.👌
tried this WD solution. no joy, key won't go all the way home
Too far gone, probably. Always worth a try though. Thanks for watching.
@@drivewaydiyer6504 Thanks. Next attemp. A Locksmith !!
Alistair Macrae that’s a ball ache, hope you can get a good price. Good luck.
Locksmith fixed the problem.
Use non-flamable electrical cleaner not WD-40. It's an electrical switch.
It’s fine to release it and get you back on the road.
For those saying WD-40 will attract dust, what lubricant don't?? 🤔 and he's clearly spraying it inside the KEY SWITCH!! NOT THE IGNITION SWITCH!! 🙄
I used to spray it all over ignition leads and distributor in the 80’s. I suppose I’m confident in it. 👍👍
@@drivewaydiyer6504 I've sprayed that s**t on everything!! 😂
It does the job, never had an issue.
You don't want to do that blood
Gerald Davis works very well. Might stop you from getting stranded, if jammed up.
@@drivewaydiyer6504 Apparently using WD40 creates a problem with attracting dirt into the lock in future. You can get WD40 Dry Lube or graphite. One lady used a pensil.
I hope you know DW40 is water based and will rust your ignition switch
It’s for the barrel, not switch directly. I’ve never seen wd40 rust anything.
Graphite works better than WD40
Yeah thanks
WD40 over time gets gummy and sticky, so no
As I agree long term, it may get you back on the road, short term.
Use graphite not wd40
That’s good, if you have it.👍
WD40 is a water displacement product. White Lithium grease spray would be better than WD40 because it is a lubricant and won't evaporate like WD40. Graphite lubricant would be better than white lithium grease because it won't attract and hold dust and dirt. Best of Luck.
Don't use wd 40 use houdini instead
It’s fine, most people have wd40. When you’re lock jams it’s normally time to change it. Wd40 may get you back on the road. Newer cars, I probably wouldn’t use anything, but this is a 30 year old civic.
Wd makes the dirt stick you want a no oil or silicone type cleaner
Thanks for the input
Yeah spray WD40 in the locks cause that wont cause dust to stick in there👎🏻
Got me back on the road and everyone was a winner.👍👍👍
Do NOT do this. Wet lube of any kind will attract dirt and will make this problem much worse.
Use a dry lube that doesn't attract dirt.
You've been warned.
This is not for maintenance, it’s to get you out the shit.👍
@@drivewaydiyer6504 only problem is, many vehicles have electronic key sensors around the ignition barrel.
If you use a wet lube like you suggested, it can easily cause it to malfunction. This can be both costly and dangerous.
You should have pointed this out in your video, and suggested using a dry lube instead (graphite).
