My first proper watch was a Tag Carrera Day Date. I loved the way it looked. Still wear it 10 years on, love it to bits. That’s what got me into watches. Now I have a fairly diverse collection, but I still love my Tag Dearly.
My experience was rather shocking. First time walking into an AD and I thought I would probably ask for an Air king or some sport model and they would put me in “the list”. It was already bad but what I experienced nothing less than shocking. I entered with excitement to ask about a Rolex. The lady there just escorted me out and told me there’s these model on the store front and see what i like and she just left into the store. It was ridiculous. I almost hated to buy a watch ever again.
A watchmaker told me that you don't need to get a watch serviced unless it loses time. He said that watches are well sealed and the oils that they use today are so much better than the oils of old.
I've always assumed that Rolex ADs are selling to a select customer group. No business can afford to set up a storefront to Rolex specifications, staff it, and sell no watches. They wouldn't last six months. Personally, I'm buying older (some NOS) watches that I like, but aren't hot in today's market. Rolex don't have much that appeals to me personally, and there's no way I'm paying today's prices for them.
Actually, some Rolex ADs are starving or at least they were when this madness was at its peak. They were complaining about carrying dead Rolex floor space if you believe them.
I think most their inventory goes out through the Grey market channels where they get a piece of the premium. Peter Marco had a video the other day where he had a hundred rolexes brand new box and papers....hmmmmm
@@michaelm1573 not only grey market channels, but also to watch shops and dealers. In my country, I noticed many ADs have no stock of the SS Rolex in display - but a well known watch shop keeps promoting on their FB page they have BRAND NEW SS ROLEX on an almost daily basis at TWICE TO 3 TIMES the RRP price. How do they get those watches if AD don't even have them.... hmmmmmm
@@scdevon yes, they were. Only large corporations like Watches of Switzerland with multiple storefronts were able to maintain standalone storefronts. Majority independent and smaller stores were surviving off jewelry and sales of other brands. Speaking to one dealer they said each season just the window and store displays cost them a couple hundred thousand GBP then they had to return them when the new ones came out with no credit.
Can confirm 100% the rolex inventory games. Back in the 2014 at the largest deal in SF.. You know who, they told me straight up that they had dozens of steel Daytonas in the safe but per rolex they had to slowly call their best customers and say that they just got one in. I live in a smallish city with 1rolex AD. it's right next to where I get my hair cut, so I stop in each time. The only business I have done with them is a wedding band purchase for me and my wife and some sizing but not the engagement ring or any other jewelry/watches. I also never act like I'm buying. I just talk watches with them. They have empty cases but a safe full of date justs, 1 or 2 steel sports and 1 or 2 precious metal watches. They are currently saying they will get their display only stuff soon so I'm assuming all large ADs and boutique have them already. Also by being nice and honest every time I stop in, I was offered a sub date from the safe, so a relationship can just be social and honest. I turned down the sub because I have enough steel watches and I'm saving for a gold watch which was going to be a day date.. Until I saw the 222, but who knows if I will ever get a shot at that one.
Fed, Awesome advice on the service times. I've noticed 90s era Omegas not showing a problem even 15 years in...course then the crown wouldn't screw in and it had to go.
Consider NEVER reporting on rolex again, no watch blogger ever should. They are 100% irrelevant. They only sell watches to their buddies, it's the old 'good old boys' network from the 1950's. Their watches are not available to the general public. Hence no need to ever mention their name again !
I think other brands are applauding Rolex for this fairly recent scarcity of most references of the crown. It forces us all to look at other great brands like Omega, JLC, etc and allows them to grow their client base. It would be much worse if Rolex expanded production and destroyed the value of luxury watches by flooding the market. There is always the secondary or grey market if Rolex or bust is your thinking. We all should remember these are luxury products and that is part of the game if you want to own a hyped model or brand. Our lives will not be lessened trying other brands or models and the thrill of the search is really the most enjoyable part of the game for me.
I visited a Rolex boutique not long ago. First time in. No stock on display save for one expensive ladies model. I explained what I was looking for and the sales rep said, “One just came in.” She returned from the back with two of the model, each different configuration. Neither was the exact bracelet or dial I wanted so I declined. She replied, “These will sell in 30 minutes.” I know that was true but I have zero interest in being a flipper. Maybe it was just my lucky day but there were watches on site. I’m happy for whomever bought what wasn’t my preference at the considerable retail price.
We all know what is actually going on at AD'S, staff are taking back handers and a large proportion of watches are going direct to the grey market. The only reason Rolex is letting it happen is because the situation has significantly boosted sales of Tudor watches.
So how do you become a customer that has spent a lot of money with the A.D if the A.D won't sell you a watch in the first place?? It's ridiculous. If I was an AD and someone came in with the money to buy a watch and I had the watch, they get the watch. I'd rather have the money right then and there than save it for someone "important"
You have to buy other brands that you don't really want but still cost you tens of thousands, or undesirable rolexes that are available (two tone Milgauss? Cellini?)
@@eugenethomas4647 that's pretty much it. And Rolex fanboys are willing to do exactly that. May as well buy on the secondary market. There's no cheating an efficient market.
"You're unimportant" is exactly how Rolex is treating potential customers. They don't even try to hide it. Ok that's their choice. Our choice is "don't play the games and buy something else." Right on!
I agree and moved on from rolex to Grand Seiko. Bought my first piece recently and will buy more to expand my collection. When all Rolex customers die off they will wish they have paid attention to the new watch collectors.
I don't think the Rolex hype will ever stop entirely, perhaps die down a bit when the world gets back to normal after the pandemic but Rolex will always hold their value.
I wonder whether there will ever be a fad for accuracy, with luxury brands responding with 5 seconds/year thermocompensated quartz movements. I suspect that there won’t be. ETA has their supposedly 10 seconds/year PreciDrive quartz, Citizen has a few of their own, and there seems to be almost no demand. 5 seconds a day seems accurate enough even if one’s spending tens of thousands of dollars. It’s bizarre: accurate time simply isn’t important at all.
I guess 5 seconds a day really dosen't matter to most people they are after the craftsmanship of autos and maual wind watches. How many times have you heard someone say it's 5 seconds past 1 o'clock probably never. I mean when you think about what's 5 seconds it's really nothing
Hey Fed, where do you like to go in the Dodecanese? Wife and I were thinking about going to Mallorca or Santorini for our 10th anniversary so curious about other ideas.
I remember 20 years ago I walked into a Rolex AD, I'd never been there before, bought a Black Sub/Date and walked out with it. It was as easy as buying a cheeseburger.
I got tired of waiting for a Yachtmaster 40 and picked up a new sapphire sandwich speedy right after the Moonswatch hype picked up. Hopefully I still get the Rolex eventually, but not sure if I would keep it or not now...
Although for many stores it is very possible they are holding back stock, I don't believe this is always the case. A family friend owned a Rolex AD and needed to close because Rolex wasn't sending them enough watches to pay rent, labor, etc. They would have loved to have things in the case, but were not given the inventory required to stay afloat.
I don't know...I had a sub, sold it...no regrets. Every time I see someone wearing a Rolex - especially a sports model ) I release more and more how ridiculous they look on the wrist and I think more and more people will eventually be drawn away from the brand. I work in the luxury real estate market, i never ever see people wearing these watches....a little passé in my opinion
You can thank social media and "InFluEncErs" for the whole Rolex debacle. The hype wont last forever, and Rolex is pissing off the genuine fan base who would of been keeping them afloat if there was no hype train. What goes up must come down......
100%...the rolex sc in my country even refuses to authenticate watches not bought directly from them, so imagine paying 2-3x msrp from grey, only to find out you can never be 100% sure that your watch is authentic.
Listen man, yesterday I was visiting my ROLEX store and it's one of the oldest distributors in the World. I have a 30 year relationship and talked to the sales director in person who already had 2 meeting with the top management of ROLEX this year. They confirmed to be working 3 charges (instead of 2) at the manufacturer but demand has exploded. I can tell you now that there are NO watches - desired watched we'r talking here - in the cellar or in the safe of the shop. These people are in the business to sell watches and not to sit on them because they have to earn money to pay for the rent and the employees - got it?! I asked to get the new left hand GMT Master II (green/black) and I was told that they have already closed the waiting list at 250 reservations. Listen man, they will get 2 per month in the future and therefore they are sold out for the next 10 years! That's how it works currently. Of course as a highly appreciated client I got a place on that list and will be served at some point in time down the road like for all these highly sought after models.
UPDATE! - Just received phone call from my friendly ROLEX dealer that the GMT Master II Reverse (black/green) is ready to be picked up. Honestly I was blown away as it must be among the very first but well, that's the way it is when you'r a trusted customer and not a flipper with a track record over 30+ years. Some people just don't get it and start to hate ...
I LITERALLY just got off the phone with my local Rolex AD asking about when I should service my (one and only, purchased new, daily wearer) 2015 116710BLNR, and they told me exactly what you said: when it begins acting up. My watch gains exactly one second/day, same as when I first got it. Interesting that this video pops up on YT right afterward...where did I leave my tin hat?
I have my Father’s 1984 Rolex Perpetual Date and last had it serviced in 2000 and my 2007 Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine bought new and never serviced, and both are running great.
Just for the sake of it, I contacted an AD to ask about an OP, not that I wanted it, but asking about a Sub at the moment would sound even more silly... Two months, no reply. Did the same with Omega, got a direct reply within 24 hrs.
@@WatchUnwind oh, I was having in mind the shady ones. If your AD is genuinely interested in selling watches to whom shows interest in owning and not flipping, then of course, buy and enjoy it!
What do you expect? Rolex expanding production like crazy? They would be very stupid to do so... for several reasons. They actually increased production rate slightly over the past years btw.... and the whole situation is not even limited to Rolex... same with Patek, AP... even some Tudor's you wait a year for (for example GMT).
Ahhh Fed, EARLY CREW WE HERE. Ok. Rolex ADs are a tricky one. I don't know if "holding back on watches" is quite right. I think they just keep giving the desirable watches to the same people. (I know this from experience - and I don't want my AD to stop giving me sick allocations haha, BUTTTTT I feel so bad for people who are wanting certian watches and just can't get them!)
Spot on....AD's have to take care of their preferred clients because they buy other stuff too. I think too many people new to watches see Rolex and think that the cost to entry is the cost on the Rolex website. People who used to buy 4 watches per year now are asking for 10+ because they are good investments and they are collectors. If I spent 100k per year at a boutique I would want to get a colored OP or a GMT master. That person deserves it over the 20-30 yr old who wants 1 watch and hasn't bought more than a Tudor.
Hard for the average joe but I am trying to climb the ladder at my AD. I bought a green OP 41 and then turned down a candy pink 31mm OP that same afternoon when I got a text. Haven’t herd anything sense and that was four months ago. I told them I’ll buy any sports model they get in because they all interest me. Hopefully turning down the ladies watch I didn’t want didn’t hurt me. I could have bought it and flipped it but I went the truthful route that I didn’t want it
@@bostoncollector Why someone who buys lots of stuff deserve it more than a one off customer. Every customer should be treated the same, regardless of their wealth. It was never a problem before but only since Rolex has been over hyped. Also the people who buy the most in AD's are buying the watches and jewelry that are not big sellers so they get offered a Rolex. AD's are using everyone and are only looking out for themselves and most people are hoping this trend bites them in the arse. It is deceitful telling customers one thing and meaning another and NOBODY deserves to be treated like that.
Haas went from being a team that constantly overachieved to a backmarker laughing stock worse than even Williams. I knew things were going south when Rich Energy was declared a title sponsor after getting rejected by Williams. Hopefully they can maintain their '22 success through the entire season.
I understand what you're saying about Rolex ADs, but on the other hand, they're pretty much eliminating NEW customers. Or maybe eventually we'll have 1 Rolex customer who will buy Rolex's 1 watch every year at $1000000.
They don't need new customers, there are thousands of one-time buyers in line. An AD wants a repeating customer that will buy jewelry and their other non-Rolex stock.
People need to start an old fashioned letter writing campaign to Rolex and asking them to make more of the “popular” sport models that are in short supply. Also, how does Rolex know that their so called customers with a buying history are not flipping the watches they allow them to purchase.
Yeah, watch stores that sell Rolex are a pain. There is a big chain here in the UK and they don't even let you buy a sports Rolex when you want to do a tri buy of a Rolex GMT Pepsi, Lange Calendar and a JLC. So yeah, waiting until they bite now lol. Visiting once a month

The other point I would like to make is that how do you know that this guy isn't already helping out the Ukrainians and it is his business and not yours what or what he doesn't do with his money.
Now since you have criticised a guy buying a luxury watch, may I ask what have you done to help the Ukrainians?
Your answer for the 1st luxury watch was spot on!! P.S. you are looking younger, keep up the hard work !!!
What you described about Rolex AD's is exactly how Tampa strippers decide who they are going to sit with. Stay trashy Rolex!
LOL
Mons Venus yes!
My first proper watch was a Tag Carrera Day Date. I loved the way it looked. Still wear it 10 years on, love it to bits. That’s what got me into watches. Now I have a fairly diverse collection, but I still love my Tag Dearly.
The first one is always a big deal. I still have my first watch too, a longines hydroconquest
Don’t hate buying watches. Just buy somewhere that appreciates you as a customer.
Yeah I totally agree. I appreciate a good watch no matter the brand and I’ll get it. It was just a first experience moment shock.
These people who work in the shops have got it into their head that they are as exclusive as the watches. They need a serious dose of reality.
A watchmaker told me that you don't need to get a watch serviced unless it loses time. He said that watches are well sealed and the oils that they use today are so much better than the oils of old.
Hearing your take on Rolex makes me sick. It’s official, I’ll boycott the brand. Thanks Fed
@@ZeroSOFInfinity any new* (edit) Rolex that is not sold through an AD is GREY market by definition.
"you can afford comfortably" is very important. You need to be able to wear your watch without having to "baby sit" it
What a fantastic answer to the ‘first luxury watch’ question Fed. 100% the right answer… it must bring you joy. End of 👍
Fed,
Awesome advice on the service times.
Absolutely. Screw them.
Nowadays walking into a Rolex AD is like being told to F-off in the worst possible way.
We all know what is actually going on at AD'S, staff are taking back handers and a large proportion of watches are going direct to the grey market.
The only reason Rolex is letting it happen is because the situation has significantly boosted sales of Tudor watches.
@@brandonjanasik9871 Nope, but you knew that already.

Big Respect to Fed. for telling the truth ❤️🙏🏼
I love that you are not a rolex fan boy. You call it like it is. I think rolex is hyped like crazy.
"Which is probably going ro be a better watc anyway"...looks at his Moser aventurine-priceless 😎👌
Cellini?)
You buy their other non-rolex stock obviously.
@@kronikinsomniak so spend the money you saved up to buy a Rolex and buy other watches that you don't even want.... Makes sense
@@eugenethomas4647 that's pretty much it. And Rolex fanboys are willing to do exactly that. May as well buy on the secondary market. There's no cheating an efficient market.
@@boombox05 I'm not a Rolex customer so it ultimately doesn't matter to me but I just think it's a ridiculous way to operate.
That Moser is a special piece.
Great video. What are your thoughts on ALEXANDER SHOROKOLOV?
Hey Fed, where do you like to go in the Dodecanese? Wife and I were thinking about going to Mallorca or Santorini for our 10th anniversary so curious about other ideas.
If I may interject here, Santorini is stunning and I highly recommend it.
Which Greek Island in the Dodecanese??? Im from Kasos. Swing by next time youre in the area brother!
Very accurate on each point! Thank you!
Excellent video Fed.
Well said!
Another great video! Love your down to earth Rolex reality rants.
Sometimes the truth is harsh. It's a grown up world out there. Good vid. Keep at it.
100%...the rolex sc in my country even refuses to authenticate watches not bought directly from them, so imagine paying 2-3x msrp from grey, only to find out you can never be 100% sure that your watch is authentic.
my guess is whenever this economy topples over, people will be flooding the grey market to try to sell. ADs won't have as much interest.
Looking good Fed. Keep up the great work! Sending some Love from Sweden 🇸🇪👌🏻
I have my Father’s 1984 Rolex Perpetual Date and last had it serviced in 2000 and my 2007 Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine bought new and never serviced, and both are running great.
...Once upon a time I walked into a Rolex AD and before the salesman could say hello to me or anything else I turned around and left the store...
Your sinn comment cracked me up "brutalist and ugly" 🤣🤣 the perfect guy to go to when you need the job done in any condition LOL!

Absolutely NO Rolex! I don't play games. Thank You Omega and Breitling for new, fresh and modern pieces.
Just for the sake of it, I contacted an AD to ask about an OP, not that I wanted it, but asking about a Sub at the moment would sound even more silly... Two months, no reply. Did the same with Omega, got a direct reply within 24 hrs.

So why bother having an AD if they never have watches?
As always, Rolex and the shitty ADs make getting a watch you want nearly impossible. The main reason I hate Rolex.
I felt the same until they actually called me for a watch
@@WatchUnwind still, the way the ADs treat the customers is a big turn off for me. I’d just refuse it.
@@diavalus my ad did not seem to bad all things considered I have heard a lot of horror stories though
Very cool, Federico!
Yes AD hold back, they are told by Rolex to display a min of 30 watches, so yours will come in and sit in the window until the next one arrives.
Yep! Bought an Omega instead of Rolex. F those games. They just won't get my business, or the business of anyone who seeks my advice.
Funny… when you described sinn… you literally described Rolex except for the brutal…
I doubt if Sinn would ever accept horribly scratched hands and looow quality movements for their 2 cheapest models. 🤔
Haas went from being a team that constantly overachieved to a backmarker laughing stock worse than even Williams. I knew things were going south when Rich Energy was declared a title sponsor after getting rejected by Williams. Hopefully they can maintain their '22 success through the entire season.
My wife is sleeping, which sucks because I think the sub on the website will be gone by the time I get the ok to buy it...
My first and only luxury watch thus far is Rolex datejust 1603
People need to start an old fashioned letter writing campaign to Rolex and asking them to make more of the “popular” sport models that are in short supply. Also, how does Rolex know that their so called customers with a buying history are not flipping the watches they allow them to purchase.
BRILLIANT WATCH INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE, FED!!!
That is true , let watch get rotten in their boutiques, and get some Omega watches , reliable, new designs and durable timepieces
So glad I got a Submariner back in 2012. I don't need another Rolex and I don't wanna play these games~

About Rolex, I won't dispute that this is your experience, but then I wonder, why an AD let me enter their waiting list, when I've never done any business with them (well, I've changed the battery of a Tag... If I remember correctly, I didn't even pay for it!!!) and after 11 months (and a Tudor Black Bay Ceramic), I've received my Submariner (this was last year...)
Cool story. I was also able to get on a waiting list with no purchase history I ended up with a green OP 41
Rolex has been holding back inventory FOR SO LONG. Why did it take you, the master, to talk about this?
