    My main watch is an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT (43.5mm GoodPlanet). I've had it for bang on 8 years, still fine. Back then it was recommended to get it services every 4-5 years, but right now for me in the UK that would be £590 ($765 USD). If I sent it in now, they'd polish it, replace gaskets and pressure test it. But if I sent it in not working well and it needed the movement rebuilt, it costs me the same. I don't care if some parts need replaced.
    But yes, if you have a much fancier watch with more complications and not a co-axial escapement, then maybe it makes sense. Or if it's not as valuable then you don't need to go via the official option - the various service centres. In which case a more local watchmaker may service it for half the price.

    I bought my TAG Heuer 2000 auto in ‘04, & it was “my watch” until ‘17, when it began losing 1+ min/day. I had it serviced at that point. I don’t plan to service my newer watches until they go out of specs or about 10 years, whatever happens first!

    • @JohnBowl14690
      @JohnBowl14690 4 месяца назад +1

      It's only about $500 for a TAG. Rolex can run above $1800, not including repairs. If servicing gets too expensive, I'm just going to go with a Quartz watch. This is getting crazy.

      @chriscon8463 4 месяца назад

      @@JohnBowl14690 In ‘17 I paid $320 to have it serviced. I don’t think my TAG is even worth that much! If it didn’t have such sentimental value, I probably wouldn’t have it done. I may take it to a watchmaker next time to see if they can do it for less. It’s got an ETA 2824 movement, so it’s fairly common.

    A deployant is useful if you have an alligator strap or other expensive strap that you don't want to bend sharply to fit into the first keeper. If you have an alligator strap custom made (e.g., from Delugs), you can request that the first keeper not be stitched into the band. The you can slide it out farther when you are putting the watch on and you don't have to bend the strap sharply to fit into it. Just be careful not to lose the unsecured keepers when you are changing out straps.
    Definitely some deployants aren't comfortable. I've sometimes found deployants sold on eBay that fit me well and substituted them for pin buckles or uncomfortable deployants.

    As a person who has had this conversation with a young guy selling me a watch I was very clear with him. If you have to pay in instalments then do not consider buying. This is a luxury item, a depreciable asset. This is literally the worst thing to spend your money on. Only do it if this is something you truly like to do or enjoy. And can afford it without taking on debt.

    • @gpapa31
      @gpapa31 4 месяца назад +5

      I am willing to bet that the majority of people who own popular entry to mid level luxury watches in the price bracket of Breitling, Omega, IWC, Rolex etc have made the purchase under some form of instalment, whether it’s a 4-9 or even 12 month plan. You could count probably in two hands the amount of people who can go into an AD and throw 6-7 grand in one go without sweating and get a watch. And most of them were likely saving for months in advance or even years. And usually those are the ones who appreciate those watches the most.
      Now, you obviously have those who sacrifice their absolutely basics and even go in debt in order to get a Rolex. Once the purchase interferes with your living standards and to the point the sacrifices are affecting your life and put you at a high risk, then yes, you’re stupid.

    Weighing in...
    Buckle... tang always! Apart from less chance of dropping the watch on donning, deployant offers no benefit. Fed is right, ridiculously uncomfortable fit for the most part. Much harder to let out a hole or tighten a hole in response to wrist changes. Harder to swap straps among watches if they are made for deployant. And oh the thickness! Fine for walking around town, but sit down in front of the computer to get some work done and nothing beats the thinner tang setup. I have a number of deployants... all sitting in the boxes the watches came in. I guess if I ever sell, I can offer a mint condition tang buckle as part of the package!
    MB&F... had the last version (Time to Love). A cool piece well worth experiencing, but just not suitable for a long-term collection hold (unless you have unlimited budget). This new S series being much thinner might just be a keeper though. The colors look nice and the movement is now Swiss. I did not win a spot in the raffle so I will keep an eye out for the secondary offerings. I don't see the prices staying over retail on the M.A.D. 1's over the long haul, so might be a chance to snag a great deal on one for the patient.

    Good point about servicing. My question related to this is: why do prices for servicing vary so much, sometimes wildly so? Example: I have a vintage Tavannes from the 1930s. It stopped working & I sent it to a watch guy in Michigan who worked on my dad's Rolex. He said it would cost $4K to fix it (no cleaning the dial or polishing the case, etc...). I said I'll wait. I then took the watch to a place in Glasgow, UK. That guy fixed it for 185 pounds (about $220). WTF?
