    A few guys approached my wife one night recently in Spain, and tried to rip her vintage gold OP off her arm. Had a system in how they did it, and they were very coordinated about it by diverting the attention of our group while one guy moved in and violently pulled at her arm. Not selling the timepiece, it’s far too perfect, but that experience was quite frightening and soured our trip a LOT. We think differently about wearing that watch out now.

    My Wife gave me a Stainless Steel and Gold Rolex Submariner Watch about 22 years ago. As I recall it cost about $6000. I wear it almost daily. It has been sent to Rolex in Texas for service on two occasions. The last service was in a word "Magnificent" the watch really looked "like new" again. At any rate, I noticed the latest version of my watch seems to be outpacing inflation somewhat. Yet considering this is a watch that might provide a lifetime of pleasure the cost is only an obstacle at purchase point and that's the rub for me no longer having the sort of income needed to buy any sort of Rolex guilt free.

    I once owned an 18K Rolex Day Date (3 other SS Rolexes also prior to that, sadly long gone) which I wore on a trip to Caracas Venezuela a few decades ago. My wife & I were invited to dinner by a very wealthy family who owned lingerie factories in Canada and lived in a huge house surrounded by concrete walls, barbwire fencing and a real vault door for their front entrance. They spotted the Day Date almost immediately and were visibly shocked that I hadn't been mugged at gun point for it or worse, my arm chopped off or both of us killed before getting there. Fan of the channel but disagree with your view that Rolex is only highly regarded because it’s a status symbol. Rolex has a notable history, has had a huge impact on the watch industry past and present (which is inherently a luxury pursuit), and offers great timeless designs. Is the resale market crazy…yes, but that’s not exclusive to Rolex. And anyone who know/likes Rolex doesn’t view them as a pinnacle of craftsmanship but an important brand with reliable movements and great universal and timeless designs. Sure brand plays a role, but that’s true of every watch, car, luxury material good.

    • @diavalus
      @diavalus 2 года назад +4

      It's a status symbol because many non-watch geeks get a Rolex to show off. Just search on RUclips "buying my first Rolex" and see for yourself. And that's just one example, there many more in clubs, rappers, etc.
      Many other brands offer timeless designs, good movements and are as important (if not even more) than Rolex. However, these brands are not perceived as Rolex, because average Joe doesn't know other brand than Rolex, therefore, someone who wants to show off with anything else than Rolex will fail to do so.

    • @HW9001
      @HW9001 2 года назад +2

Plus the finishing is as good as any movement in that price range from other large brands if you look at the quality of graining, surface finish, bevels etc. Others may offer some more decoration but man if I didn't think the JLC MUT Moon movement was underwhelming when I saw it despite everyone hyping JLC movement finishing...

    How is a Tudor really the gateway to a Rolex? I've owned multiple Tudors and my current favorite watch is a Tudor Pelagos. It doesn't make me want a Rolex, quite the opposite actually. On paper a Tudor Pelagos is better than a Submariner, minus if there was a box to check for status symbol or secondary market price. There are so many other watch brands out there that offer the same or better quality horology or innovation at a fraction of the price of Rolex. Do I want a Sub, absolutely. Will I pay 3x MSRP or whatever it would take to get one, hell no!

    Rolex is so often described as an investment. But no one talks about what that means. Most investors will recognise labelling a commodity as BUY, HOLD or SELL. If you get one at retail price, no doubt BUY. However the second you walk out the door, with the going rate on grey market, it's an obvious SELL. Unfortunately investing is about making money, which I feel perpetuating the hype and damaging Rolex as a brand.
