To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.

That tiny pocket was actually originally designed for a pocket watch, but it's good for any small thing you want to protect from damaging/catching on, or vice versa, whatever you're keeping in the other pocket. For example, that's where I keep my pocket knife.
Be careful using the little pants pocket to hold any air buds case! While the case seems like the perfect object to put inside that otherwise useless pocket, they are prone to popping out, especially while walking. The case will open upon hitting the ground and the buds will be strewn across the pavement, damaging both the case and the buds.

Just got a pair, they're great. Musicality is typical Sony which is top notch. Just a good clean sound from bass to mids to treble. Is it at all possible to add call quality as a request for these types of reviews? As somebody who uses my -insert wireless headphone brand here- at least 5-6 hours a day on work calls, microphone quality/clarity is quite important for me so the people I’m talking to can hear me clearly, and I’m guessing quite a lot of viewers would be interested too! Keep up the good work guys.
Like many, I would like and benefit from a mic review too. What I’m finding is when reviewers do not review a certain function and component it’s more than likely trash for that function. Reviewers choose what to leave out. So I focus on those things not said.
@@noturaveragewatcher I’m keep switching between my AirPod Pro’s (which work really well when on the go with iOS 15’s new “Isolation” mode so others can’t hear your background noise), but battery is mediocre, and doesn’t integrate well with non-Apple products. The software is coming a long way however so I have hope that maybe in the future it won’t be a worry. For now, I would still like call quality reviews :)
@Will Swift yep agreed! I very much liked the Nvidia audio software review for streaming (the one with the leaf blower - that was really amazing!) I hope this one day comes to all devices via dedicated hardware.
How's the microphone!!!!! This is important. Do this for every headphone review. I bought XM3's back when they came out and the microphone makes them basically unusable for me.
*A warning to anyone still looking to purchase these* I've had these for a year and a couple months and battery degradation is a MAJOR problem with these. They no longer hold a charge well and drain very quickly. It's a problem that seems to plague this model right around after the 1 year mark. Conveniently Sony only put a 1 year warranty on these, and their "advice" after the warranty expires is to turn off all of the premium features to increase battery life. You know, the extra features that you get for paying a premium price. You might as well get a cheap pair of skullcandy headphones. At least then you get what you pay for. $300(with tax) seems like a steep price to pay for disposable earbuds. And I say disposable because there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get the replacement cell for the earbuds, you can pretty much only replace the case battery. TLDR: If you want earbuds that last, don't get these.
I would like to add something regarding the Sony XM4s. I have a pair and don't get me wrong they are fantastic in almost every way, but have a well known and glaring issue. Long term battery life is not consistent. The battery in the case and the right ear bud on my set are pretty much done for, barely a year after purchase and with normal use. Conveniently just within days of being outside warranty. This is not an isolated issue either. Minimal research shows many examples of the same problem, with batteries on the buds and or case essentially dying after about a year and just after Sony's 1 year warranty period. And Sony, who must be aware of this I imagine, are not forthcoming with assistance. I understand warranty is as it is, but for a wide spread issue that seems to be a technical issue with many of their buds I expected more direct assistance when I engaged their support team. But what I got, and everyone else I came across got, was a call to either pay to have them shipped to a repair facility and repaired at cost or buy a brand new pair. For a product marketed as premium and costing as much as they do this situation hardly seemed appropriate and definitely soured my opinion of the product. For those that got good sets, they work very well. And I cannot argue the quality of every other part of these. But why pay close to $300 for a product that has such a high chance of only lasting a year? I hope for the LMG team to see this because I'd feel bad for someone buying these on their recommendation to then get the short end of the stick.
Me just replaced my XM3s through warranty because of battery degradation (apparently DSEE HX takes ALOT of battery powers).... Now thinking between this or Airpod Pro since I do not have iphone.... but I do use Apple Music on Android.... and I might switch to Iphone.... but XM4 looks awesome.... but spatial audio.... but LDAC.... Dammit Sony and Apple, it will be alot easier if Spatial Audio is also supported in XM4.

Still went with them because the airpods aren't the best with Android, and XM3's were 100$ cheaper at the time, so enough to cover 5 eartip purchases, and that's enough for the few years the battery will last, and with memory foam eartips I do agree they're much better.

We are at the awkward stage where these are more expensive than the Sennheiser MTW 2's. Currently they are on sale for $250 and $220 for the Black and White models respectively while the Sonys are at the normal price of $280! I'm so torn on what to get because using earbuds independently was a must have for me, but that was also because my old AirPods didn't have the battery to last me on one earbud through a whole work day with just charging on my 15 minute breaks. I would have to swap earbuds through the day, but when one pooped out I was screwed. My main priorities are sound quality and being able to use only 1 bud for an 8 hour work day with only 2-3 15 minute charging intervals a day. If anyone has tried out one, or both of these earbuds, and uses them for a similar situation I would love to hear you feedback. The quality of the ANC is also important because I need to be able to easily talk to people, and hear a radio while using them.
One thing that has been surprisingly important for me is what the mic sounds like on ear buds. Specifically, does it pick up a whole bunch of ambient noise? I'd love if you could add this to your tests
Linus, you took this review to the next level. The one complaint about my Samsung buds pro is the fact that I can not ware them while riding a bike because of the wind noise. Thanks for including that in your review

@@tdmduc Yes i use Comply with my old Sen IE60's there great. The tips that come with the Sonys are a blend of Foam and Rubber/silicone and for me i think its the rubberyness(is that even a word lol) combined with the expansion that holds them in your ear making them a little sticky which irritates my ear canal after a little while, never had that issue with the Comply tips so, i can literally sleep with them in.
@@bigdaz7272 idk about the xm4s since mine are in the mail but gently wiggling the xm3s made my ears less sore and made them seal better as well. Maybe try it out.
I absolutely love mine! I love how it switches from noise cancellation to Ambient noise when I start talking and returns to music after 5 seconds or however long you want it to return to Noise Cancelling/ Music. The sound is up there with my over the head Sony XB-900 and that's saying a lot cause those batboys put out some serious Bass!
Have the previous one and they keep falling out, they are really heavy, wish he would have tested that with a shake test. Also would've loved a comparison to the previous one. I was quite underwhelmed coming from 15$ to my current pairs which where like 200$
I have the Airpods Pro with foam ear tips made by various manufacturers (but no longer include Comply in the lineup because they aren't quite as good) and the sound quality has improved quite a bit. It has a bit more low end emphasis but not quite as much a 'V' shape as my Jabra Elite Active 75t. I plan on buying these 1000X-M4 buds though as I didn't care for the bulky size of the 1000X-M3
I have the WF-1000XM3 and I love them, so, I can't wait to check them out! It looks like they've made them smaller than the last gen too which is a good thing. My one gripe with the XM3's is the touch button so I'm hoping these are better like they seem to be
I got these after buying the Samsung buds pro and absolutely hating how they fit and felt in my ears and being totally disappointed in the anc (the call quality was good though). These wf-1000xmf & the xh-1000xm5 over the ear headphones have legit changed my life! The anc has made working in a very loud and busy environment possible even for me a person who is very sensitive to noise. Also I love the software and features and haven't experienced any bugs or issues at all. The only downside is the $ but for something that works so well its worth it imo.
I would be interested in hearing the difference between the foam and silicone tips. In my experience the Comply style tips do provide a more custom feel however, the porous properties of the foam make the bass seem less punchy and make the sound seem a little thinner. As a lifelong Sony fan I am very interested in trying these. My current XB700 work great with spare silicone tips from an older pair of MDR XB90EX which are my previous favorite. Good video. Thanks.
I picked up a set after having a positive experience with several other Sony earphones, and I completely disagree about the stock memory foam tips. They provide a poor seal, don't stay in very well, and can end up making your ears sore after having them in for awhile. Changing sizes doesn't make a lick of difference. In addition to being painful to wear, the poor fit renders noise cancelling useless. Even Sony's app knows it because it can test for ambient sound bleed, and the foam tips all had that issue. Once I swapped them out with third party silicone tips, the sound bleed was nonexistent, they had a more comfortable and secure fit, audio quality was way better, and the noise canceling worked properly. It's odd because all the other Sony buds have silicone tips that work great. I'm not sure how their research could have determined foam tips to be a better option. If anything, they could include silicone tips alongside the foam as this is their flagship earbud and it's only another few dollars for extra tips, but that's something you have to get on your own. These are also bulky compared to Airpods and Linus is right about Apple nailing ergonomics and comfort factor; it's easy to forget you even have Airpods in your ears whereas you never forget these are in. I'd love a Sony earbud with a Airpod style form factor for comfort that doesn't have to lodge into the conch of the ear, but rather rests on the ear lobe.
I've finally started using my little pocket for airpods again. It's been the "tiny hand sanitizer" pocket for the past year or so. I do wish the XM3s had been in the running too for the comparisons here.
Important fact people. I had Bose QuietComfort Earbuds & lost the charging case. Unlike Sony with whom you can send your bud or buds too them and they'll send you a case programmed to your buds, Bose makes it so their buds can only be charged by the original case, so if you ever lose your charging case, your conveniently forced to buy a whole new set.
1:12 *Yes* , we most certainly *do* use that little pocket for Airpods Pro. I wish Sony would slim their case down just a bit more, because I'd definitely consider switching. I still love how the Airpods auto switch between my Apple devices, and I wish more third party products could have that feature.
The comment about noise cancelation being almost eerily good is spot on. I got these and tried them and was impressed but then I went on a trip and these things basically completely silenced all the plane noise. I had my volume on like 20-30% and heard everything perfectly clear. I had to keep turning the ANC on and off just amazed how much it got rid of.
All I can say is, growing up I was always emotionally moved by Music. As time and life move on that faded.. However I just got these today and for the 1st time in forever a song brought me to tears. These things are so good they sound so good.. I'll admit I'm having a hard time getting them to fit my ears.. I'm a bigger person but I have smaller ear canals.. the smaller buds are way too small, the mediums are weird, the bigger ones are way too big ,I've always had a problem with Wireless earbuds for this reason.. That being said I stuck with the mediums kept adjusting and stuffing them in my ears because the music was so good I am literally emotionally spent spent listening to it.
Also hate. Not that I loved the excessive version either, but this slower, more quiet, and saying against different over the years...it's kind of gross. Like he thinks he's above it all. It's just kind of annoying
The only thing not tested is "workout friendliness". When I workout, phones without the over ear support fall out of my ear. I used to have a SONY WF-SP800N that had a little ear support. Still it sometimes has fallen out. I also have a Power Beats Pro that never falls out, obviously because it is over my ear fully. I wanted to know how much this works out when I run for example. Or how does it deal with sweaty head. Do you have any tips on this?
Just bought these and for anyone that wants them for cycling I suggest that these are NOT for you. The Wind reduction does not work. In both modes (ANC or Ambient) or even turned off the wind noise on these things is terrible. They fit really well and the seal is great so it's not that. The ANC does not work for cycling. Let me be clear, these things are amazing in every other respect but I bought them for riding and they are pretty much unusable for that use case. If you are riding at a perfectly constant speed they work but if you get a gust of wind or you ride down a hill the wind noise is like an f'ing hurricane. So in effect what happens is you get this constant wind noise cutting in and out as the ear buds adjust to the new wind speed. In fact they seem to somehow amplify the wind noise which I know sounds bonkers but is true. I replaced a set of Jaybird X4's with these. The Jaybirds are simply a corded ear bud, not ANC and to be honest the seal in those is produces a much better reduction in wind noise than these. So anyway, as I mentioned earlier, everything in the review is accurate, they sound great, fit great, the functionality in everything is great. They just aren't really suited to cycling or any other sport like it I'd suggest.
But the new one made you look like you're a little bit excited down there lol, I once get photographed by some strange woman when having the Funcl headphones with similar cylinder-looking case in my pocket.
A lot of people spent countless hours, especially in the times now when WFH is a norm.... call quality ? how is the call quality, in noisy environments, and in office space, or in traffic etc ?
I'm thinking of getting these. Do you mind if I ask how the fit is? Are they able to stay in your ears if you were to jog and go to the gym? I had some Bose and the B&O e8's that sucked for the gym. I haf also dealt with connection issues. So I'm really interested in these. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Btw... Costco has these on sale atm.

Once i tripped and fell, smashing my new pair of earbuds that was in my pocket😢 will never make that mistake again.

XM4’s are so good.
XM3s ftw since I’m broke. Should I upgrade from them to the XM4?
@@plzdonhack depends, if you have an android you can use ldac. These sound better, are way smaller, the case is way way smaller, Anc is better, they dont fall off my ears at all,and the pause at speak is great. Sadly almost 300 dollars is a lot.
@@plzdonhack I have the XM3 but upgraded to XM4 and it's really good. Way smaller and better fit. XM3 design wasn't its strong suit at all. I really hated the design but did like the sound quality. The XM4 is also very comfortable to wear. Had it on the airplane today for 5 hours plus and it didn't hurt my ears at all. Neither did I have to keep adjusting it for a good seal, something I suffered with the XM3. The "pause to speak" feature is also a great addition. And the ANC is greatly improved. Only downside is the price really. Paid 301+ including taxes but I'm loving it so far.
@@plzdonhack i know i’m going to, battery life is a huge incentive for me. currently have to charge my xm3’s once every 4 hours with ANC
Just got a pair, they're great. Musicality is typical Sony which is top notch. Just a good clean sound from bass to mids to treble. Noise cancellation isn't quite as good as my over the ear WH-1000's but still fiddling with the fit so we'll see. Still good enough to muffle any overly loud obnoxious people who manage to wander a little too close to me.
Did you find ones good for phone calls?
Yea that's the weakpoint for these headphones. Mic is pretty garbage. Pretty perfect for everything else though

Mine works fine. Maybe faulty?
Never had any problems with the mics on the mx3 ... Works perfect for me:)
*A warning to anyone still looking to purchase these*
I've had these for a year and a couple months and battery degradation is a MAJOR problem with these.
They are $178 for Black Friday

I use that pocket for my guitar picks so I call it a "pick pocket"

I got these after buying the Samsung buds pro and absolutely hating how they fit and felt in my ears and being totally disappointed in the anc (the call quality was good though). These wf-1000xmf & the xh-1000xm5 over the ear headphones have legit changed my life! The anc has made working in a very loud and busy environment possible even for me a person who is very sensitive to noise. Also I love the software and features and haven't experienced any bugs or issues at all. The only downside is the $ but for something that works so well its worth it imo.
So you hate the Samsung buds pro and love these sony earphones? Please clarify if I misunderstood, thanks!
Good video. Thanks.
Keep doing the little pocket test! Don't listen to them, you got me sold on that being the right size!
The word of the day is “MORE-ER”

I watch a lot of Linus's content and I usually don't comment but holy crap, this is a really well done video on the XM4s.
That’s cool, I lost my charging case for my earbuds and have to buy a new pair. Good to know, definitely have to get Sony!!
1:12 *Yes* , we most certainly *do* use that little pocket for Airpods Pro. I wish Sony would slim their case down just a bit more, because I'd definitely consider switching. I still love how the Airpods auto switch between my Apple devices, and I wish more third party products could have that feature.
Honestly I prefer the Sony lid closing feeling.
Cant wait for DankPods to have a look at these.
They are my favorite, and the foam really holds up
The comment about noise cancelation being almost eerily good is spot on. I got these and tried them and was impressed but then I went on a trip and these things basically completely silenced all the plane noise. I had my volume on like 20-30% and heard everything perfectly clear. I had to keep turning the ANC on and off just amazed how much it got rid of.
One big issue with these is after a year of use they don't hold the charge, only for an hour at most.
Mine only last 20 Minutes on the right side while the left side still at 80 after 20 minute
The buttons at the side of the ear buds are extremely sensitive, just by my hair touching it, the audio mode will switch from nc to ambiance.
Sony: let’s call our new ear buds the wf-1000XM4 wireless earbuds
Malaysia
Wow... I don't know what to say.. Perfect idea.. 👏👏👏
They should be called da beens
@Hen Kris Sounds more like an American gun tbh😂
@@maismade6013 That was their internal code name. Can’t have a silly real name now, can we?
How do you sleep with earphones on? That must be painful.
I do that often with IEMs. Depends on the shape and fit. But on bulky ones i sleep facing up
Bose SleepBuds are my go-to for sleeping
I used some KZ dirtybuds to sleep with podcast playing, it sits really flush with my ear
It’s the same as earplugs no?
First step is find a comfortable pair that doesn't embed itself into your ear when between it and a pillow.
am I the only one who likes this different version of him much more? (quite, as opposed to excessive)
I actually hate it. It feels low effort and honestly like he is being forced to do them. Dont care for them as much anymore.
Yeah I much prefer this versus over hyped high volume squeaky voice
Also hate. Not that I loved the excessive version either, but this slower, more quiet, and saying against different over the years...it's kind of gross. Like he thinks he's above it all. It's just kind of annoying
Linus: its more like aaaa stone color
Me: its light gray
Wind noise reduction is kinda hidden feature for WH1000XM4, if you slide one tick from the highest noise cancellation
At least they finally made their case a size that is actually usable. The previous one were hideously large.
I've got the XM3's and I absolutely adore them.
