Sony Linkbuds might sound like they're your run-of-the-mill earbuds, but the shape alone is pretty unique. The circle shape or donut shape goes in your ear, but on top of your canal instead of in it. This shape allows you to hear everything around you, and it might sound better. Linus takes a peak.

IDK man if they are advertising pokemon go as an ideal use case... Id love to give these a try and see. I no longer own ANY overear headphones that are closed back everything is open and either planar magnetic or dynamic drive... feels like there is probably a solid reason why people dont design and sell open back IEMS.

    • @MuhammadKharismawan
      @MuhammadKharismawan 2 года назад +14

@@daniel_poore yknow what's the closest headphone comparison to these? HD800, as those actually also have a hole in the centre of the driver.
Well useless comparison aside, not sure why either, so far earbuds, cheap and expensive ones still exist in nihhe market while others are either going ANC or just good passive isolation, that's all they ever try because that's the nature of TWS, being used portably make em more useful with noise isolation built in.
Here, their use case are more niche, but for me I can already see this being useful for office use, as i've tried a couple IEM with "open back" design, various earbuds, EX1000, heck even LCD i3, they still block sound a tad too much for me to be aware of the surroundings. I wonder whether these can fare better.

@@benbenoy4419 I mean if ur only looking at the biggest brands like Sony, bose, Apple, dre, senheiser, and bang and Olsen then maybe, but otherwise absolutely not. Around this price point the best choices would be the Soundcore Liberty 3 Pro, Jabra Elite 7, Drop+Grell, or the Beats Fit Pro (all of these are also a better choice than the airpods pro or 3 btw). Oh and galaxy buds pro.
And if your reply is "well none of those are open ear designs" then my recommendation would be one of the versions of the soundpeats True Air lineup (2, 2+, and 3, ranging from around $30-$50). They all have good connection codices, better battery life than the link buds or airpods, and pretty fair sound. The 1More comfobuds 2 are great too, they just have a small silicon liner on the end of the open air pod design for a better seal.
Honestly there are so many good earbuds from brands like 1More, edifier, jabra, soundcore, soundpeats, and a few from jlab in the price range from $40-$150 that blow the higher priced big brands away with comparable sound and anc, and even better battery life, durability, and waterproof rating most of the time. All the big brands have conditioned people to be ok paying way more for earbuds than they should.

Speaking as a (a) parent and (b) office worker, these sound like a must have. I've always wanted to listen to music while the little one sleeps, and be able to hear when they wake up. As an office worker I've always wanted something more practical than wireless earbuds - because they're really impractical to handle when you're not listening to anything. I've always preferred neckbands for that reason, because they can just hang around your neck.
But if these can stay in the ear for a while and still be comfy, that's huge. All day comfort would make these supreme.

    • @LockheedMartinEnjoyer
      @LockheedMartinEnjoyer 2 года назад

Been daily driving them for a few days comfortablity might be up to the user but if you used the galaxy beans pod before then it actually not that different in the fit, the tiny rubber loop dig into the tiny space in your ear for a tight fit, and slightly more comfortable, sleeping with them in don't feel comfortable sadly and they don't have great battery life anyways. They're exactly for the use you wanted, the adaptive volume control is pretty good though atm need some more patches but overall the experience is amazing for work, shopping, or just doing thing around the house. Downside if you use all the features battery life is somewhere 4hr of full to zero.

Let me share my experience with these.
I got them for Christmas and I can tell you, shortly, that they're great and I really like them. However, they *may* have a few significant inconveniences, depending on some things.
-They're indeed very comfortable. Once, I legit forgot I was wearing them and almost took a shower with them. However, my ears had to get used to them. During the first 3 days, after using them for a couple hours each day, I developed a somewhat strong sore in both ears where the back part rests, mostly, specially on the right ear (either because of the shape/size of my ear or I just didn't adjust the bud the same way as the left one, if not both things). Of course, your experience may vary. I have slightly small ears, (compared to Linus, I'd say juuust a bit smaller than his, although the shape is fairly different), and the buds fit almost perfectly on mine, with almost no room for movement. I believe smaller ears may have a problem with soreness and general uncomfortableness (if that's a word) over prolonged use, if they can fit them at all to begin with, while bigger ears would almost certainly feel more comfortable in general but may have issues with them being a bit looser in the ear.
-Sound quality is decent. Overall, better than I expected, even, considering both shape/format (mostly) and price, but, as someone who listens to a lot of electronic music, you will certainly notice a drop in quality there, also with things like electric guitars. Pretty much anything electronic will sound slightly muffled, not much, but fairly noticeable. (Not really an issue for me, though). In the other hand, melodic-instrumental music (specially pianos and similars) sound really great, imo.
-The wide area tap works great, though perhaps, _too_ great, as it's pretty sensitive. They detect taps every now an then when I brush my hair around the zone and you can literally slap yourself 2 times with the same force you'd clap your hands and they'll detect it. Even eating/chewing crunchy stuff may trigger the things. (Happened to me only once, but yeah)
The only really bad experience I've had with the app happened after using the tutorial/demo for the wide tap feature. There, it reproduces a loud, high-pitched piano sound instead of the default "dun-dun" sound when you do the taps, but it continues to reproduce them even after completing the demo and closing the app and I couldn't find any way to turn it off (it is very loud and annoying, painful even), so I had to uninstall and install again the app to get rid of it. I don't know if it was a bug or just bad UI/UX implementation, but, either way, just in case, I'd recommend to just not do that tutorial/demo.

To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.

Only using one earbud doesn't really work for me. These are amazing from that perspective. I can now listen to music, podcasts, and audio books and still carry on conversations without having to take out my earbud and ask someone to repeat themselves. I also own the WF-1000XM3s which I bought for the active listening, which works okay, but still doesn't really allow me to hear clearly.

Bought a pair of these 3 days ago.
The link buds are super good at sticking in your ears even when you're moving around a lot. They didn't budge while I went for a run, did situps, and even while jumping rope.
Comfort is no issue. They are low enough profile to comfortably lay your head on a pillow without them jamming into your ear. It's not like you won't notice them in your ears, but you won't feel any uncomfortable pressure. They don't fight your natural ear shape nor do they feel too heavy. By the nature of their design, they won't irritate your ear canals.
Audio fidelity is very enjoyable. It's not as good as my Sony wh1000xm3 set, but it's still a quality experience. Just don't expect the bass to blow your head off if that's what you're into.
If you can't stand sidetones, don't need the noise isolation, and want a comfortable set of lower profile buds that you can exercise in I super recommend these.
edit: Wanted to clean up the text since this was highlighted.

These honestly sound like a really great idea and perfect for me. I deal with really bad earwax buildup to the point it blocks up my ear and i lose my hearing. As well, i suffer from hearing sensitivity so wearing earphones that plug in my ear can get really uncomfortable. I'm also prone to ear canal infections so the less things in my ear, the better. Definitely will check them out when they drop.

I got them yesterday and the sound quality is really good, they sound so natural, audibly they are transparent, really natural. Working from home the lack of NC is OK. They also fit in my motorbike helmet, but of course you can't control them, but I haven't rode with them yet as we're in the middle of a storm. Regarding fitment, maybe they're a tad big for my ears or I haven't gotten used to them, but even with the smallest lobes they're a tad too snug and create pain spots after hours, continuously putting them on and taking them off will worsen that effect, if you don't it will be some hours before you feel uncomfortable. Maybe I'll get more used to them as time goes by, but even head banging didn't knock them off. They have a stable connection so far in a relatively crowded space in terms of radio frequencies, with phones, laptops, tvs, consoles etc in just our flat in an appointment block, previous sonybearbuds were struggling to keep a stable connection in a similar environment. Case is a bit weird to open, gotta grab it with one hand and open with the other, it's very weird. Inside, the wells were the buds rest, have a magnet in the area under the bud's drive, providing a guided fitment, which is really good given their very symmetrical shape and lack of in-canal probe. Battery life so far has been good but I haven't been through a complete cycle as they remained above 60% for the rest of the day, after the initial charge. The case is very fast to charge them, but I didn't measure it, it also seems to hold charge well. Oy real complain is the complete customisation with the controls. I'd like to see the ability to individually assign actions to each tap combo per side, or even addition of an extra quadruple tap to rotate between presets. Overall I'm really pleased with the sound, how little they protrude, their battery life, fitment is the hardest to judge at the moment and the software capabilities around controls could be improved. 7.9/10

I'm super interested in these. My issue, even with the super lightweight galaxy buds live, is the heat buildup in my ears. My inner ear can't breath and causes them to become uncomfortable. Whether or not you like these linkbuds I beleive will depend on your earbuds requirements or use-case. For me the three most important features are call-quality , comfort and music listening quality. The linkbuds are great if this is what you are looking for. The call quality or in other words can the person that I have called hear me clearly and the answer to that question is absolutely YES. During the call if I move into a noisy environment they can't hear the background noise and they can hear me well but the noise affect my ability to hear due to the open earbuds design. They are super comfortable and I can wear them for hours with no issues. When listening to music in a quiet environment the sound is just amazing. These kind of remind me of a pair of "open-ear" headphones I have. The brand name is "Treks Titanium", and they essentially are worn *in front* of the ear and vibrate noise through your skull, right to the cochlear hearing organ in your head. Big benefit of them is apparently that if you have eardrum damage, these will allow you to still hear/listen to music at normal levels.
I use them a lot if I go for a run, because keeping the ears open on the street is a huge plus. Big downside however is that they look a little odd, and they only really work well for someone that doesn't have a lot of hair; since it vibrates through the skull, you need to pretty much have your sideburn area buzzed down to the minimum. Still worth it for just around $130 CAD though.

I hope this concept gets developed on further. I've always preferred in-ear over on-ear or over-ear, but in-ears get tiresome after awhile, and in the past few years I've developed issues where tips won't want to stay in my ears no matter the size or shape, and I've been having some wax problems as well. These may be the solution to all of those issues, my only concern is the low-end, without that much needed seal, these will probably be highs and higher mids only. It'd also be nice if the size of them could be minimized to a point where they're comfortable to wear while laying down. If I ever buy into this idea, I'd want the first-gen teething issues out of the way, and have a more refined gen 2 or 3 as a purchase.

I use only one earbud but because of the noise canceling I have some trouble when interacting with people. The only thing I'm disappointed in with these new buds is the battery life. 5.5 hrs with up to 17.5 hrs with case may be the reason why I would return them. In contrast the buds plus is around 11 hrs of just playtime. I'm willing to try it tho because these seem right up my alley I just have to work around the short battery life if I can.

I work in a silicon fab facility and ordered a set as soon as I could in an effort to be able to listen to music while I work and still be able to hear people/alarms etc. These not only are exceptionally uncomfortable even with the larger wings installed (I'm a man with average sized ears. I typically use Comply comfort tips for all my buds and they've never been an issue.) but these aren't as good at letting me hear those around me as my wf1000xm3 earbuds in ambient sound mode. I'm a huge proponent of open back headphones and was hoping these would sound good enough and allow enough sound in to allow me to use them effectively at work but I'm sending mine back. I developed a sore spot in my left ear after an evening with them in (realistically I only lasted a couple hours with them in) and they allow a lot of noise in but not a lot of voices or alarm sounds in a noisy environment. The donut shape is a compromise I understand but it was so uncomfortable to use for any length of time and because my ears aren't exactly perfectly the same shape the left side would work it's way out very easily. I was excited for a new take on ambient sound buds but this design simply isn't it for me. Best wishes to those who do end up with these as there's potential here but the sound and fit were sub standard for what I come to expect from sony. Good price I'm sure it's great for an office environment if you can get them to fit comfortably, but just order from somewhere you can easily return them to if they don't work out.

I mean my hearing has always been sort of not great, but masks have tripled my issues. Apparently I used to lip read to compensate, which was why eye contact was an issue for me, and so now I use amplified listening to compensate instead. They are like cheap hearing aids. Right now I'm using the samsung galaxy buds 2 (they have the most of what I look for right now). It's a balance of good amplified hearing with a dedicated touch and long battery life. I have Aftershok Aeropex, which are quite costly bone conduction headphones. I love using them at work and pretty much everywhere. Since they do not sit into myears, I tend to completly forget them. I'd even say I like the feeling of having them pressing gently on my temples. I can listen to piano music for example, and it kinda feels more as if someone is playing the music somewhere in the room. However the bass is not great and of course the isolation is non existant. But using ear plugs kinda transform them into "real" ear buds, even providing bass, and the headset has a specific eq for both modes.
Another problem is that people generally don't understand that I'm listening to music or am on the phone because they can't spot anything in my ears.

I've daily driven these at work since they released, and they are FANTASTIC. They are so light and comfortable that I put them in and never take them out. I seriously forget that I have them in sometimes. And their battery life is much better than rated if you don't always listen to something. I can make them last through 8 hours without charging, since I just have them on whenever. The calling quality is also great, never had any complaints about them. Since I need to be able to easily talk to others around me, these are absolutely fantastic.
The other major benefit to these, the fact they do not enter your ear canal, make them the only way of having premium earbuds for some people. I daily drove the WF-1000XM4s for a while, but I had big issues using them on my right ear after a while, and they also fall out much more easily (same goes for all other wireless earbuds in one way or another). These are the only true wireless earbuds I can wear currently which make it easy to talk to others, while never having to worry about them falling out or not being able to hear my surroundings.
Sony, I want a new generation of these, because there are still improvements that can be made. For one, I've had to RMA these twice already, once every 6-7 months probably due to oil slowly destroying the drivers, since there's much less distance between the drivers and the ear. I'd also hope to see an upgrade to the max volume and bass on these, because they don't get very loud. And I want to see an upgrade to the Bluetooth on these, hopefully also better battery life on the case itself. Other than that, these are absolutely revolutionary and crushes everything available at this price point.

@@ArnoldsKtm buds live looks a bit ridiculous with their shiny look and IMO, they arent designed for sound quality, at all, with that tiny opening for their driver.

@@ArnoldsKtm I do need to try them too, but I don't have a good feeling about them and I hate the look. They haven't really been enough to tempt me away from my og OnePlus Buds which are pretty much airpods knockoffs

@@MuhammadKharismawan Buds Live are actually great for me compare to Buds plus and Buds pro. They have wide sound stage and better (more) base, especially when using Adapt sound on Samsung phone.

At 179, I definitely will check it out. It sounds interesting. I actually have the current XM3, and might be replacing it with a Buds since I probably will get another Samsung since my phone is getting old (and will have a bonus that will be a Buds anyway). At 179, this might be alternative to the usual style.

I think Sony should also include (or if it's already on market - sell separately) tips/cups for ear canal while buds in there so you can be sound isolated when you like (transport, loud public place) and when you have no need in isolation - take them out. That would be absolute killer feature. Especially, if they really are comfort enough to wear half of your day

I've never preordered anything before, but after seeing this video I knew I had to try them. They arrived the day after release, and they're perfect for me. I have severe OCD (diagnosed, not just perfectionism) and I get extremely uncomfortable when I can't hear and be aware of my surroundings. The worries that causes are 10x more distracting than any noise I may have to deal with. Artificial transparency doesn't work because I can't trust that it's picking up everything accurately. When I've tried it, I find myself frequently pulling one bud out to check if it's working or if I'm missing something. Thanks for reviewing the LinkBuds Linus!

These actually seem pretty cool and might finally get me into a pair of "true wireless" headphones. I've been using my pair of "neck buds" (the kind with the wire between them) for years and just leave only one in because I hate the feeling of not being able to hear around me, but something like this could be perfect.
I really hope DankPods does a review of these as well for a second opinion on the sound, fit, and usability because he tends to disagree with some of the LTT guys and I want to see if he's on the same page that these are good before buying.

I love my AirPods Pro, and I think their transparency mode works pretty well, but these headphones are ones I’d be interested in trying. The biggest disadvantage I can see is the inability to have any kind of noise canceling, which is one of my favorite features of my AirPods.

I've tried them a bit including one night sleeping with them, tho idk if it was super comfy lying on the side. XM3's which I currently have, are near impossible to lie on the side with. SP00Ns too despite staying in, and being smaller, don't feel good on the side iirc. Haven't used them in a long time despite sweating not feeling good with XM3's. Could I enjoy using Airpods pro only? Would like to save money, but still have good noise cancelling. I use Android, and Samsung TV with Bluetooth for gaming and watching.

These seem interesting for folks who like in ear headphones and want the openness. I personally prefer over ear styles so I went for some bone conduction headphones the AfterShokz Aeropex. Different strokes for different folks. Hopefully these work for whoever wants something like this
