ANC is absolutely incredible!
All frequencies are crushed and you just get absolute silence. It is clearly improved across the entire spectrum but especially in the vocal range. I had no idea my wife was talking to me yesterday
They have a new dedicated ANC processor inside plus a new integrated processor for everything else
TEST 1: The common test for white noise: tied in first place with Bose QCii and AirPods Pro 2, but the other frequencies are the big win
TEST 2: crowd test - 48.6dB
Bose - 47.5dB (previously first place)
TEST 3: female voice test - 45.6dB
Bose - 40.6dB
TEST 4: Wind - in transparency mode, it sounds exactly like my actual ears in wind
In ANC mode, it is very muted but still audible until I play any music. I would say in high wind, I might need to turn my volume up by one notch but that’s it

I believe it can just like the quality of the xm4's mike did improve a lot (same with the headset xm3 for exemple, which got better with time and updates.

According to the soundGuys video review, the call mic issue is isolated to the pre-production units given out for reviews, and will be fixed by release
@@orkmad12 kinda weird they sent out review units with such blatant flaws. not only is mic one of the most crucial and obvious parts, but this quality is straight up unacceptable. they gave them out for reviews knowing they’d be put online, how did they not discover the problem in 20 seconds of testing? this is like actively trying to kick their toes into a wall

On the XM4 sony did improve the microphones A LOT throught software updates and I bet they will here too. On top of that, here the problem seems to be some form of saturation, as it clearly is not a microphone issues, more like how the sound is processed. So I bet that it will get better pretty soon.
I was honestly surprised that the mic sample was so bad, very peaky and rough. I don't really believe in "update promises" so this is a deal breaker for me.

Yes! So excited these hit. Great review! I loved my xm4's but the size was a little big. If they only fixed that I wouldn't gotten them but knowing that they sound better, better ANC and I can not worry about what phone I have currently and its a win
I have used the XM4 earbuds as daily drivers for about 2 years and oh boy how much I loved them. After using them almost everyday for about 3 hours (going to the gym, training, and coming back + groceries), They were for me already agead of the most recent competition (appel), except that after so much use, the battery on one of the buds now lasts for only 40 minute with ANC on.
Same I'm just wondering if they're worth the upgrade
@@SuicidalChocolateSK Well I'll tell you in a few days. But my bet is yes. Sony took almost 2 year and a half to put those ones out so its an improvement for sure. But its true that if the battery life on my XM4 was still lasting matching my needs I would probably be a bit more hesitant.

The drivers capacity as noticibly better for both low and hight frequency and the level of personnalisation in the app has allowed me to really create a sound that fits what I am looking for in music. better than with the 4. Also the case is a nice surprise and feels much more dense and robust to me
Had my XM4’s for 2 years also, but the battery life issue turned out to be because of firmware if I remember correctly. I just got a full refund through my protection program 2 days ago, so I’m looking at the XM5’s

I've wnjee the Sony earbuds I've used and the longevity of updates, battery etc. I've used my first Apple airpods and was really impressed by those. However, i need a second set and it's going to be Sony (having gone through a whole range of other brands and found issues over time, lack of updates, fixes and long term durability).
I will pay any amount if it silences my wife

For anyone who doesn't know this, sonys 1.6.2 and 2.0.0 software update made the xm4 buds heat up to an abnormal degree while charging causing permanent battery damage for some users
I was wondering why they blinked red frequently while charging them :(
Ye for me the left one last one hour. Luckily I bought them on Amazon and I got the full refund after 1 year and half
I had no clue... For a few days after charging I remember thinking "Wow they are really warm in my ears" and then I threw them away because the battery would only last 5 or so minutes
No fucking way they killed my buds from a software update.....
They need a class action lawsuit
Yes same as me my left bud only last bout 30 mins know but right bud is fine n the charging case is also doesnt hold charge to fully anymore they are 2 n half yesrs old tho and were used everyday.. i will be upgraded to the 5s tomorrow
So I’ve had the XM4s since launch and had no problem with the ear tips. I did clean them improperly and they peeled a bit but after I learned how to cleaned them via their site, never had that issue again. Mines didn’t split and still use them today.
You said you had no problems, and then immediately said they peeled after cleaning. That happened to me the very first time I ever tried cleaning mine, VERY delicately with a q-tip and tiny amount of alcohol. It shouldn't happen, period.

Did you had a problem with a battery? Coz they replaced min after i reported the battery issue of my first xm4.

Interesting review. I have the XM4 headphones & have been using them extensively for awhile now, but for Earbuds, I bought the Bose QC II's. I was looking at the XM4 earbuds last year, but the size & foam eartips were turnoffs for me. Although I haven't used my Bose extensively yet, I am happy with them.
I'm having big issues with the uneven loss of charge on the XM4 earbuds recently
@@GregCanty Problem I have with the Bose is everyone complains they can't hear me on calls in noisy environments; the ANC and sound are great on the Bose - connectivity sometimes spotty and have to reset

@@GregCantyit's a known issue. I'm having the same issue. I get maybe 30 minutes out of my right ear bud. Some say it had something to do with a firmware update that caused the battery to I've heat and become damaged.
@@darriusholt Same here. I've had mine for 2 years. Just when the warranty is over the left one starts to die. The left bud can barely get through 45 minutes. The sound quality is great and LDAC is awesome but I'm reluctant giving Sony my money again after they messed up the battery with a shitty firmware and they don't own up to it.
I like the use of the net instead of the sponge fitting they used to put in the headphones nozzle like the mx4 have easier keeping dirt and wax out then the mx4

Yeah I believe that new update has drain my right earbud dramatically they only last an hour as of recently

Great unbiased review. So many RUclipsrs are reviewing these and still referring to airpods pro 2 as being better. Having both the airpods aren't even close in terms of sound quality or ANC etc.

Mike I wish u had compared the (in your ear) comfort features with that of an apple earpod. The earpod is so allday comfortable, you willingly give up other features to own one. Great presentation.
Can you test these with silicone tips and compare the noise cancelation? Foam always provides better noise isolation and I'm curious if these are any different.
nice quick review. i was sold halfway through it but the mic test was a dealbreaker… that’s really under performing for a new $300+ flagship model in 2023..

I was looking for a reason not to get airpods pro2, since even though it’s pretty much the most well rounded one out there, the batteries on all previous airpods died really fast (short lifespan, not runtime on single charge). and i like sony’s focus on bass for my music preferences. the airpods pro2’s mics are some of the best there is, and are getting adaptive noise cancellation which is quite amazing. still I would’ve been okay if the sony xm5 were decent in call quality, but this is is simply a joke. there have been $100 buds from anker that have better mic quality than this… wtf sony

Sounds like SBC codec to me. Some compatibility issues between his recording devices, I'm sure.

Hows the mic now? Was there an update?
The fact that Sony only includes foam eartips is not great, but I would recommend using Render eartips. These have foam in the inside and silicone on the outside; they seal your ear canal like any foam tips but they don't get grimy. I've been using them on the LinkBuds S and it has been great.

in my experience using the old Xm3's rubber eartips work best. They're very durable, fits perfectly on the Xm4s and can be pushed a little deeper in the ear canal for better NC and audio quality.

Thx Mike, because of your reviews I owe Sony 1000 XM3 & XM4, and probably XM5 will also find its way. I use them constantly for music, audiobooks, podcasts and much more, but I have a request for you: Every evening and night I use my earpods to fall a sleep, listening to audiobooks, sleep meditation, subliminal language education and youtube videos, but unfortunately it is somewhat painful, because I am a sidesleeper, because the pillow pressures on the earphones. Also because of the friction of tossing and turning they often fall out. Would you please consider creating a best in test for night use? Thanks again for your great reviews, best on YT 😉👍

@@molina-youtube I have tinitits am I use them every night in bed. In the morning I usually forget I have them in. They fit really well. I lay on my side. Sometimes you can feel them pushing in a little bit but not much.
I was sold with the demonstration of you right next to the road. That has always been a sore spot for me.
Samsung phones have a hearing test feature to determine which frequencies you can't hear and it adjust the sound so you can hear them. As you age your hearing degrades and you can't hear certain frequencies anymore. Anker liberty pro 3 has this sound test too on their app. Sony should implement that in it's app. Also, the 5 band equalizer is pretty lame too.

The mics sound digital but inside & outside. I can hear a little static. So hopefully some firmware can fix the microphones & sound.

The battery life is awful on the EXs..... 4 hours max. Mine anyway lol.

Wild that a 8mm driver is considered big nowadays when sony used to have 16mm+ drivers in IEMs in the past

i'm an android user ( S22 ULTRA ) and also an owner of these WF 1000XM5'S too, and i can confirm that these are the best earbuds, no contest. ive used the WH version for a long time, then i decided to swap that for these WF1000XM5's and never turned back.

If you know someone at SONY, PLEASE, PLEASE, ask them to cut the bs and make sure that genuine beige/ silver Foam Ear Tips are available as spare parts.
They are not for the XM4 which I only recently bought and for the new XM5’s.

Must read if anyone is considering the XM5: I have a pair of old XM4’s. A firmware update screwed up the battery of my buds because the older models of the XM4 had a different battery and the new firmware was catered to the later models of the XM4 with the newer battery. This happened just after my buds warranty expired. Sony’s customer service is rubbish and still insists I pay for the repair. I would strongly discourage anyone from giving Sony a single cent. If you spend $300++ on earbuds, I’m sure you’ll expect to last at least a couple of years until you’re ready to upgrade. Not be screwed over by the manufacturer and be forced to upgrade to a new model. If this happened to the XM4, I’m sure Sony (following Apple’s footsteps) will do that to the XM5 when the XM6 comes out.

MIke, you have already tested dozens of headsets with different phones. I've been using my Jabra Elite 75t for a while now with 2 Android phones and they worked great for me, powerfull bass, a lot of settings via Jabra app, etc. Recently have moved over to iPhone and.....they sound as cheap chinesse TWS, the app alters the sound but just a little bit, you can bearly notice the difference. There is a void between their sound via Android and iPhone. Have you ever encountered that? really loved them, no I'm disapointed and not willing to buy the airpods (just too expensive).
Some non-apple buds can sound worse with iPhones because apple really wants you to buy airpods. Personally, if you were already an android user, i see no point in getting a worse phone.
Dude the elite 75 ts are a legend. I've worn them for 3 1/2 years now and they are just perfect still

The question is: basically the right earbud is still the mother bud ("R" is red on the app)? Mono mode on the left earbud with Google Assistant activated is not possible for the XM5s then like their Linkbuds S? That's when the battery drain will be inconsistent too if some of us use one bud at a time, and in this case, the right earbud is the only usable one for mono mode.

With the mic test, I like the AirPods Pro 2s, the best, for sure but the other stuff did sound very good, the mic one just didn’t cut it for me.
Btw, until the end of this weekend I’m clearly judging by reviews I’ve seen of the mics,
I won’t even own the Pros until later
but the reviews have been pretty even with the AirPods Pro 2s sounding the best
Looking for the best/loudest sound while mowing lawns! I listen to Audible while mowing and want it loud over the mowing noise. Are these the ones you’d recommend, or would you go with something else?
I do landscaping and these were absolutely horrible for it! I have tried a ton of different ones, by far the best I have found so far are the WF1000XM4s, those things kicked ASS. Lasted me 2 years of listening almost 8 hours a day! Can't recommend them enough. I am getting the Bose Quietcomfort Ultra tomorrow so we'll see how those work lol

How do you deal with talking to people when you use them? I use the Sony headphones and it annoying to talk to someone with them on because it opens up listening and when you are done you have to restart the video or whatever you are listening to when using the headphones.

I've just got some of these. The features and the sound is amazing. I also have some beats fit pro and I have to say I prefer them for the sheer loudness and ear fit.

I am not sure there is enough here for me to upgrade from my XM4s. I also love the "steampunk" look of the XM4s. However, these do look a little bit more petite and also improve in ANC processing. hmmm

Foam Ear tips shape should be tapered at the end so that they can easily enter ear canal and the outer portion can expand. Durability is also not good comparing foam and silicone tips.
How secure is the fit compared with the Jabra Elite 7 Active?
How would these feel under a helmet? Would they squish and rub against the sides alot? Im looking for a pair of earbuds to wear under my motorcycle helmet.

i have the xm4 and yes, the ear tips are a pain to have. I have them on this color and it's impossible to clean them without causing some damage.
I got them in black, but they were still really grimy, so I replaced them with more durable foam eartips
I can recommend getting a pack of silicone/rubber eartips. They are made specifically for the XM4 and super cheap 😀 I find them much for comfortable, I once had them in for over 4 hours without any issues

I have been looking toward getting these for a while now. I have been an audio fan and need for a while and so far, Bose, JBL, and Sony have been the best so far. I recently got the WH-xm4s and they are amazing. I then got Sony ring linkbuds. Thank you for this review because the other reviews have not been so detailed from other RUclipsrs. Thank you so much. The Bose earbuds are Absolutely INCREDIBLE for noise cancelling especially low notes
