As a teen I spent years in a fairly traumatizing Psychiatric group home, my parents gave me up. My roommate used to sing this to me when I was scared and we were falling asleep. A small act of kindness that still makes me loved when I hear it 20 years later.

Oh no way dude!! Read the comments for almost any song from this era and you'll find loads of people reminiscing! I, too, much prefer it. (Though tbh not this song much.) Even going into the early 2000's is so positive for me (though admittedly that pop became a bit of a different animal.)

Shortly after 2000, "music" switched from being made by artists to being made by "performers". Rap/Hip-Hop and "pop" music killed the art.
Lady Gaga (whose _real_ name is Stehanie something) was an exceptional artist who only became popular after transforming herself into a weirdo wearing dresses made of meat to draw attention to herself.

After I was diagnosed with cancer, I started chemo immediately. This was 1998 and I was 13. This was the song playing on the radio when my mom and I left the hospital after the first day. I will never forget listening to it while driving (or crawling) down the 405 freeway in Santa Monica. It is truly a "period piece" for me, despite this being a one-hit wonder.

I remember folding clothes and listening to this song through the old speakers. I remember the anticipation of meeting the beautiful girl I only got to see a couple times a year at those conventions. A college friend of mine, then the head of a major broadcasting company in Munich, brought this song back to Germany from a trip to the U.S. and had his DJs play it. It became a huge hit. A little later, the station brought Shawn in for a few smaller concerts. I saw him and his stunning band in Munich: they were awesome. Nothing came of Shawn's international career, probably because he was a rather introverted shy man, at least at that time. He was all about the music, never about the whole business. From the meet and greet I remember him as a very nice, polite, modest guy. I think he's still active in the club scene in and around.

When my wife and I were first married and pregnant with our first child we thought my wife was going into preterm labor. She called me while I was at work panicked and I told her I would head home and take her to the hospital. On my way home I was getting pretty worked up and this song started playing on the radio. Made me a bit more emotional, but I somehow knew deep down things would be alright. 15 years later my daughter is doing well and learning to drive. She's a pain in the butt, but I love her.

I'm 29, and I feel old. I _know_ that I'm old. People tell me, oh, no, you're still young, but I just brush it off. They say you're only as old as you feel. Well, I feel old. This song, and the genre of watered-down Alt-Rock it represents, is as foreign to contemporary music like Taylor Swift and One Direction as Donna Summer and Talking Heads were to it. It takes me back to Middle-School, riding on the bus and pretending that I didn't like it. Same for Tal Bachman's "She's So High", which not coincidentally, is the next thing on the Recommended feed. Kids would listen to this and decry it as "Old People Music", same as my peers did with 70's music.
The feed to right of this comment is like a trip to my childhood; "Save Tonight", "Steal My Sunshine", "Truly Madly Deeply", "One Headlight". It's all gone, lost to the past, to the sands of time. The world we grew up in in the 90's was swept away. I think that always happens to one degree or another, but between the War on Terror and the rise of the Internet, I think ours was more swept away than most. I sometimes feel like a refugee of another time. I have what the Japanese call Mono no Aware; a wistfulness at the impermanence of things. And it already seems like I've seen so much pass. Yet they tell me I'm still young...
If indeed I make it to old age, I'm not sure how I'll deal.

I'm having trouble listening to one of my favorite genres now, Alternative. Too much "wooo wooo woo" not enough guitar. No substance. There was a time, between 1995 and 2002 (actually most of the 90s, peaking between 1997 and 2001) when most of the hit songs had structure and some sort of substance, a good chorus, made you feel good, while telling a good story, or expressing something. Now the Pop and Alternative, a lot of it is just a bunch of synth noise. I don't feel like I should be feeling like this, I'm not even 30 yet (28) but every year it seems to get worse. I thought things were bad in 2003, but at least there was a few good songs even back then.

I normally don't share my most personal stories with anyone except those closest to me, which are getting fewer and farther between these days. However, I do feel the need to share this.
This song started hitting the airwaves around the time of my parents' divorce. I was 11 years old and felt overwhelmed by the changing circumstances. I felt that I had to come to terms with so many things in a short time. The music of the time was one of the few constants in my life, and this song stuck out to me lyrically, and I listened to it regularly, making those weekends with my drunken, abusive mother slightly more bearable.
At the time, I tried taking the refrain to heart, but I spent the next five years lashing out at the world. However, I have been harkening back to that as the years have gone.
Looking back, while the events of the time still stress me out, I'm at least glad that I was able to experience and appreciate the zeitgeist that was the 1990s.

That's the mark of an incredible storyteller. Watching the video now, two decades later, I still recognize the girl I was in the past - although she bares no resemblance to who I am now. I was abused by a family member for a vast majority of my life. When I was old enough to know what they were doing was wrong, they'd try to sneak in while I was sleeping to do it. I used to watch for our kitchen lights through the vents of our ac hoping they would stay on long enough for me to get at least a little rest before I had to wake up and fend this family member off. My mother had given me this old radio that was a bit hard to tune and a bit clunky, but I loved it because she'd given it to me. I was 12 when this song came out and I'd always tear up when I heard it start to play. While I have never lived in Hollywood, it was nice to think I might have friends who thought I was pretty...and by the time the chorus hit, it was like Mr. Mullins was speaking to me directly- letting me know this wasn't a night I needed to worry about being woken up or finding...things they brought in under my bed the next morning. I'd snuggle into my bed a little harder and usually fall asleep with tears still streaming down my face. It didn't stop for another 3 years and had been going on for so long that I didn't know of a life without fear. His voice truly convinced me that everything was gonna be alright.

@@dereld17 I see a trauma therapist once a week and a psychiatrist every six months. I pray, meditate, write, do reiki, and sound therapy daily. I'm not in a perfect spot, but as it turns out, Mr. Mullins was entirely right: that family member is in prison now for semi-related offenses, which gave me the courage to come forward. I hold no contempt, I don't wish revenge. I want this person to go to a facility where they can be put through psych testing and we can learn what makes people turn out that way. I want p*dophilia to be an offense like cannibalism: a shameful lust for flesh far, far removed from modern times. Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time out of your day to type them. May you have a lovely day, week, year, and life, and may God hold you in the palm of His hand ❤️

this was my dads favourite cd when i was growing up. i can remeber so vividly driving up to huntsville, Ontario Canada when i was like 7 or 8. My dad threw this cd in the old cd player in his '94 ram and I enjoyed it so much - as a young boy. Today i'm 27. I have never stopped listening to this album throughout my 20's. All the songs start to mean so much more to you as you age. I think my dad connected with these songs on a personal level, almost like he left a story for me. I love you so much dad.

She grew up with the children of the stars
In the Hollywood hills and the boulevards
    Her parents threw big parties
    Everyone was there
They hung out with folks like Dennis Hopper and Bob Seger and
    Sonny and Cher
She feels safe now in this bar on Fairfax
And from the stage I can tell that she can't let go and she can't
    Relax
And just before she hangs her head to cry
I sing to her a lullaby
    I sing:
    Everything's gonna be all right
    Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye
    Everything's gonna be all right
    Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye
She still lives with her mom outside the city
Down that street about a half a mile
And all her friends tell her she's so pretty
But she'd be a whole lot prettier if she smiled once in a while
'Cause even her smile looks like a frown
She's seen her share of devils in this angel town
    Everything's gonna be all right
    Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye
    Everything's gonna be all right
    Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye
I told her I ain't so sure about this place
It's hard to play a gig in this town and keep a straight face
Seems like everybody's got a plan
It's kind of like Nashville with a tan
    Everything's gonna be all right
    Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye
    Everything's gonna be all right
    Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye

I am so fortunate to have been born at a time when I could experience the decades of popular music I have heard over the years. Beginning with the sixties and now currently. I have seen it change with the generations that remember the songs from their youth. Every decade has it's favorites. Every generation has a marker in time based on the songs they heard. One thing is certain, and true for myself, you don't appreciate what you are hearing at that time as much as you do now.

I have been searching for this song for over 20 years. I had it on a SONY music cd that I lost in 2000. It was my soundtrack in the late 90s, the soundtrack of my youth. I found it today thanks to The Office series. I am very happy now.

Being one who grew up and became an adult in the 90's it felt different, we just embraced our time. Perhaps it's the same. but we were coming to the end of the century and people were enamoured with life ending and eternal life. I can't put my finger on it, but when i listen to 90s music, there is a soul to it i don't find with anything else.

That God damned Laraviee acoustic makes this song for me.
Spent about three and a half hours trying to decide between a Martin composite and the Laraviee. At this point, I don't know... maybe it was the D'addario EJ17 strings, but that "no name", hand crafted piece of art made me a life-long fan.

And, I was like.. _*...can you FEEL the resonance of the Laraviee!?"
