I think I finally get the meaning of this song. The first 2 kids in the video had supportive parents while the 3rd did not. If you pair the lyrics with the video it's about overcoming things, but understanding that some people lack the support. That boy was probably disowned for his part in that play.
Without understanding the lyrics without reading them, that's the meaning i¡ve got from the images at once. Bad parents or tutors do a big harm to children whereas society just looks aside
Depending on the text, all three kids were abused in different ways. The hair of the first kid got white because of trauma, the second girl has bruises all over her body and the third kid has fundamental religious parents, maybe from a cult.
The performance by the bass player on this song is lovely. Doesn't over-play or under play and knows exactly when to be melodic and when to just let the music breathe.
Couldn’t agree more. I find that if someone was not there to experience it, it’s impossible to really describe so they can understand. Makes me sad for kids today. But those of us who were there know exactly what you mean.
depends what was on. if it was some lame pop group my older sisters liked I just turned on the sega. if it was metallica or soundgarden, game time was on hold for a while.
This isn’t just a hit pop song. It’s an orchestral movement. Listen to the ethereal background vocals how they flow into eternity against the curtain of changing chords.

My dad used to listen to this all the time. I just lost him last week and its been the hardest pain ive ever felt in my life. He was my best friend and he always had amazing taste in music.
The 90’s were amazingly strange and awesome all at once..I was pretty young when this jam came out and thought it was goofy and didn’t take it serious, now I’m older I really dig it..
Those songs were often lighter then what they likes the first time we heard them. I think it's the magic of this decade (maybe also the 80'). Deep lyrics with light melody.
I think watching the video when you're a kid or teenager kind of helps to make you think it's just a goofy song. You just have to check out the singer's silly expression at 2:51 to see that they had a little bit of fun with it.
On one hand, I love the goofiness of this song. On the other hand, the lyrics read like he's constantly about to say _"makes you think, huh"._ On the biologically improbable third hand, I like songs where the lyrics are obtuse.
This song came out when I was in high school and I loved it. Last night, Jan 25, 2023, I lost my sister to a violent murder. No idea why, but this song just came back to me and now I've been listening to it over & over. It gives me this powerful feeling of acceptance, especially being a father, because you never know quite what someone is going through. We're all battling through life one day at a time.
I don't know any other song that quite catches this mood. Not neccessarily pity for bullying, but having a secret shame that children dont know how to deal with even if their peers are accepting.
2020s has given us the most variety ever, thanks to the diversification of online streaming taking control away from the radio and CD stores. For the first 14 years of my life this song was simply just a cheese commercial. But then I started to look up the lyrics and OH MY GOD IT'S A LEGITIMATE SONG
This song may seem odd or not make sense to anyone who hasn’t experienced childhood trauma or seen that exact look of shame on their parents’ faces, but I’m one of the ones who relates with all my heart. God bless everyone else who feels the same. ♥️
To me this is a masterpiece. My reading: young people feeling insecure (1) something unexpectedly hurt their image and self worth (2) something they were born with hurt their image and self worth, so they deflect by hurting the image and self worth of (3) a person who believes differently than the herd. This is a poignant and good song.
To me it plays out like little kids telling each other stories and spreading rumors. At least that's what I got out of it from how it's worded. When we were little, there were always these weird and often times overly exaggerated stories that would circulate on the playground.
True. The "formulas" they used in the 1980's had dried up, and so the record industry became more willing to spread a wide net for different acts as a means to find "the new sound." The music in the first half of the 90's was far more varied than the decade before or after the 90's. In fact, the music became more narrowed and formulaic even by the late 90's.
I'm so glad you finally made it You get to enjoy the whole song now And we are all here with you Some have come and gone and some will Finally come back Mmmmmm, mmmm, mmmm, mmmmm Mmmmmm, mmmm ,mmmm, mmmmmmmmmmm
I'm a dude born in the late 90s who grew up in the 2000s and 2010s. Much of the music I first fell in love with were made in the 90s, but obviously I didn't experience the culture of the decade and its sound; I'm just a music snob. But I've never heard this song until I stumbled on this video by complete accident. I keep coming back to it, and it induces such a nostalgia and a sweet melancholy. There's something special about it; the relatability a lot of us share in the comments I think is a strong symptom of that.
I hear you.I was 14 in 1993 growing up in Ireland.Lying awake listening to this on the radio at 3am on warm summer nights is a very special memory to me.

You're correct in your observation. By the early 90's the music industry was desperate for new sounds, so they were willing to give a broader range of acts a chance at success. Bunda
@@jameshollan1160 No wonder they didn't get a career after this song. It's got to be silliest lyrics ever.
It's still goofy that can't be his real voice he looks like he's trying to be over the top with the way he is pronunciating the words.
On one hand, I love the goofiness of this song.
On the other hand, the lyrics read like he's constantly about to say _"makes you think, huh"._
On the biologically improbable third hand, I like songs where the lyrics are obtuse.
One more proof that non-standard, non-classic music and vocals can be fantastically captivating. The subtext in the video is also superb

But I've never heard this song until I stumbled on this video by complete accident. I keep coming back to it, and it induces such a nostalgia and a sweet melancholy. There's something special about it; the relatability a lot of us share in the comments I think is a strong symptom of that.

Haha yes
Such a gorgeous song, a certain melancholy that never ages, timeless.2019 take note.
I'd be honored if some 90s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by the CRASH TEST DUMMIES, Arms of Angel by SARAH MCLACHLAN, and Long December by the COUNTING CROWS on my YT channel in tribute to a couple of great 90s standards. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace out.
As a 13 year old when this song came out I just completely dismissed it. Now 42 I've realized it's such a timeless classic and takes me back to my early high school days.
You are latest born generation X like me, I'm 41 and then 42 on autumn 🍂 equinox September this year 2022. So i guess i was 13 or 14 when that song was released.
But what does the song mean???
I was 13 also when this came out. We are same age very sentimental from 8th grade
same here 😊👍
About to turn 41 this year myself. I go back to this song and others from back then and remember staying up all night over Christmas break listening to whatever came on MTV.
I totally forgotten this band ... They were hell of funny and quite smashing when they were wearing their Crash Test Dummy Outfits ...🎶🎵🎸🍻🤘😎
