Defense wins championships. From the run first to pass heavy offenses, these are the defenses that could truly carry a team. Whether it was punishing the Quarterback with a sack or making them pay with an interception, these were the teams that made every inch count. These are the top 10 best defenses in NFL history. - Спорт
The 1977 Atlanta Falcons. A precursor to Buddy Ryan's 46 defense, masterminded by Jerry Glanville. Their record of only 129 points allowed (14-game season) still stands, and they were at, or near, the top in every category. Fun to watch, too - that, "Grits Blitz."
Very underrated defense!!
All plays in the 70s and 80s would be illegal today's games.
Mike Johnson are you high. That’s in the 50s 60s
true..but when you consider the average player is bigger , stronger and faster in today's game, the collisions are more powerful. it's basic physics. so they had the change the rules a bit. if todays players were allowed to play by the rules of the 70's & early 80's, guys would be dying on the field.
Who gives a f--
From 1974-79, Pittsburgh's Steel Curtain gave up an avg 13.5 points per game during that 6 year run. They also posted 10 shutouts, 3 players were named Defensive Player of the Year in consecutive years(Joe Greene in 74, Mel Blount in 75, Jack Lambert in 76). They also played 44 teams whom they held to 10 points or less, winning 42 of those 44 games. The 2 losses were to the Rams in 75 and 78(Pittsburgh won the Super Bowl in both of those seasons)
if you add in 72 and 73 their stats get even better. they are only bested by one team in history. the 69-76 vikings.
When the League institutes a D-move & that same move is named after current player...You Have Arrived!...aka Mel Blount rule
Exactly 💯💯The Mel Blount rule
come on everyone the 2016 Cleveland Browns offense should have number one on this list. Other offenses never had to go on the feild and when they did it was already past mid feild so they were the best defense of all time
Lol
Not funny
Hahaha
You spelled field wrong
@@carsonbryant78 thats all you got to say nerd bird
THE 85 Bears scared TEAMS...
There were really not that many good teams in 85 the steel curtain scared teams too all except raiders they were the 2 most vicious teams but one year wonder are not number 1 6 years steel curtain dominated 4 SB and blount is the re@son for the 5 yard chuck rule
Travis Bickle Their schemed ripped off the 77 Falcons and they weren’t as good as the 77 falcons unit lol
@@sactownsteelers6748 refrigerator Perry forgot the falcons who ruined the old bucs
@@sactownsteelers6748 .the Raiders of the 1970's won because of their Offense, not Defense. they had only one season in which they finished in the top 5 in total defense. but the best defenses of the 1970's speaking strictly from a statistical standpoint were the L.A Rams, Cowboys, Steelers, Vikings & Dolphins.
the steel curtain was definitely #1
If you go by stats ,the 77 Atlanta Falcons are number 1.They hold the record for fewest points allowed in a 14 game season.
Jim North ya. But the 1976 steel curtain just snapped and went crazy after they started the season 1-4. Their last 9 games, they only allowed 28 points. Their season stats are brought down a little from the first few games. But that streak of 9 victories had five shutouts, three of which were in a row. They may have had seven, but two of the games the other team kicked a single field goal. I’m not saying that other defenses haven’t been amazing, but what they did that season after the terrible start was legendary.
@Ern Alejandro But he’s right. Research it
@@dylanholman3 no question that was the best 9 game stretch in history. but they were 4-5 against winning teams that year including playoffs and not even close to the 69 or 70 vikings statistically.
stats be damned - it's HOW! you play the game. There are no stats for intimidation, fear or clutch plays that turn or save a game. I hate statistics people, you're so boring and stupid.
Umm 77 falcons should at least be on this list look at int ff and passing yards allowed
You're right and they created the Grits Blitz
Someone crunched the numbers (while factoring in the difficulty of the schedule etc.) And the Gritz Blitz defense tied with the Steel Curtain for the best defense of all time
Your exactly right they have the least points allowed with 7.7 of all time
passing yards allowed is a joke stat until ~1995
not just on it, theyre #1. easily. and im a bears fan
What about the 77' Falcons under Jerry Glanville and his Grits defense. Lol They are statistically the best right?
David Holcomb yea I agree
correct
True
True
Also good job KTo
1976 Steelers by far. They were 1-4, then they won 9 in a row allowing just 28 points with 5 shutouts in their last 9 games. They were dominant in an era when football was football allowing just 138 points all season.
Carol Knoblow 2015 Chiefs. Started 1-5 and proceeded to win 10 straight games. They finished the season with the most red zone take aways. Then they beat the Texans 30-0 in the playoffs.
Carol Knoblow how are you not gonna talk about the raiders that year? The curtain never got to the snake =)
that's partly because they were still playing a 14 game schedule in 1976, you knucklehead..
I agree, 1976 Steelers was the best defensive team of the Steel Curtain. Only lost in the playoffs because of key players getting hurt.
1976 steelers number 7 on my list
Thank you for the Upload. Some great defenses that I forgot about.
When I was little kid watching the NFL I always thought the steelers looked scary by the colors
The 85 Bears was great with the 4-6 "D" but the Steelers had a Dynasty of Defense. 76 Steelers #1
The 1976 Steel curtain was tough and had all those shut-outs. That is hard to ignore.
The 1985 Bears defense made that Steel Curtin look like a dress...85 Bears defense the best ever period...don't even talk
@@JohnnyBGood11 Statistics disagree. points per game allowed was near a field goal more for the Bears.
Awesome video great stuff 💯
The 77” falcons deserve to be on this list
Hmmm..., tuff to call it.., but definately most notable:
'86 NYG,
'85 Bears,
70's Pittsburg "Steel Curtain" D.
These Defenses all overwhelmingly Dominated their opponents.
If your going to put the 85 bears on that list, then you also have to put the 77 falcons, Without them, there would be no 85 bears, Buddy Ryan literally coppied the 46 bear defense from the 77 falcons' "gritz blitz, and the next season no less. Had the 77 falcons never used the style of defense they used, the 46 Bear defense would never exist, meaning no rings for the bears.
Bears gave up 10 points in 3 games won the super bowl Bears Best ever piss in the steelers
Be sure to comment on who you think deserves or doesn't deserve to be on this list! Also please like this video and subscribe for more. Thanks!
NFL Top Ten 1992 Dallas Cowboys
NFL Top Ten No 1977 falcons grits blitz so fucking disrespectful lmfao that 77 defense is the NFL best defense in NFL history allowed the fewest yards ppg they lead the 85 bears and 2000 ravens in every category but sacks
Abraham Lopez they definitely deserve to be on the list, but you also have to look at the quality of their opponents in the year they played.
Seahawks should be #1
1977 Broncos are missing
I agree w/ this. I remember the SB between Baltimore and NY. That Baltimore defense was so good it was pissing me off.
That Eagles 91' Defense was CRAZY!!! SO 89' & 88.
Where is the 1977 Atlanta falcons
The Gritz Blitz. Even today statistically they are the best defense ever.
In second place and out of the playoffs
@@m64h 😂 but imagine the 2017 falcons offense with the 77 falcons defense. Nobody’s beating that
Mosters Of The Midway!!
1985 Chicago Bears Defense #1!!
Steel curtain is better
Great list
The 70s Steelers were a great defense for years. Most of these teams were good for one season.
Good point, Steelers D was a dynasty👍
That's what puts them in a class by themselves.
Shoutout to blitzburg
that eagles defense is the only defense in NFL history to come 1st place in every defensive category in the same season...
But wasnt good enough to win the superbowl who cares!?!?!
Eagles did it for one season...were as the Los Angeles Rams did it for 15 consecutive seasons...the first 15 seasons of the super bowl era, the L.A Rams organization fielded a defense that by all statistical metrics was the best defense in pro football...the L.A Rams organization conceded the least points & yards allowed from 1966 to 1980, and also had the most QB sacks...
@@julsc2106 yep but reigning SB Champ and will continue to do so.
@@cthomasobrien1502 hey im happy the eagles beat the cheaters im happu for the fans . Good luck this year the Broncos have a nasty defense as well did you see miller yesterday
The eagles defense did it in the toughest division of all sports that year. They went 10-6 and didn't make the playoffs. They had to use five different starting quarterbacks when Randall Cunningham was lost for the season in the first half of the first game. 1-1-1.....no other defense in NFL history can claim that.
The 1991 Eagles defense is arguably the best defense of all time. It’s no worse than #3!
My Top 10 best NFL Teams defense of All Time :
1. 70’s Steelers ( the best of All 1976 Steelers ) .

Bears & Steelers are my 2 favorite teams so #'s 1 or 2 is still great! Steelers had 4 HOFer's on D - Bears had 3! 70's Steelers were 4 & 0 in the Super Bowl, 80's Bears were 1 & 0! Chuck Knoll was a genius when drafting college players (74 draft: Swann, Lambert, Stallworth, Webster - 4 HOFer's in 1 draft)! 2 Great Defenses that dominated opponents!
USCG BMCM retired uu
And Donnie Shell F/A
78 steelers were the most scary defense ever they were the reason a lot of the rules changed
They aren’t better than the 85 bears
The 85 Bears made the 78 Steelers look like pussyfarts the toughest game ever played 1984 Bears vs the Raiders look it up son
Nope. The 78 Steelers were not WHY the rules changed, that was AFTER the rules had changed. But you are part right, the NFL changed things because of the 74 and 75 Steelers, mostly Mel Blount who manhandled receivers and dominated them with physical talent.
In my analysis, the 1978 Steelers were the 4th best team of the 1970s Super Bowl champs, after the 72 and 73 Dolphins and the 75 Steelers. I have Steelers '75 as the best team of that decade after the '72 Phins
Denver with its first 'Orange Crush' defense in the '70s was very good.
What about the '77 falcons?!
The 2000 Ravens & 2015 Broncos were truly special doing what they did in the modern day NFL where teams are a lot more even. Before free agency & the lack of loyalty to a team, the Pack would've had the best D dominating for a decade (60s).
interesting you bring up that great Packer defense in the 1960's...but interestingly enough, from 1966 to 1980, the first 15 seasons of the super bowl era, the Los Angeles Rams had the best defense in pro football...my statement isn't based on opinions, it's based on facts...
Great choices..I'm a Bears fan but I would still put the old"Steel curtain" at #1....
Your not a Bears fan
@@JohnnyBGood11 Why? Because he can objectively see the better team was the Steelers and not the Bears? If the Bears were as good as the Steelers they would have won more than 25% of the Super Bowls the Steelers won. Point blank, the 1970s Steelers is the greatest defense in the history of the sport. They have 4 flags and did it multiple times with radically different rules changes, rules changes inspired ...BY THEM.
And yes I am a Bears fan. Had the Bears not had an idiot for a coach (Ditka) maybe they win it all 3 or 4 times and are considered the greatest team ever, but they didn't. Guys like Noll, Gibbs, Landry, Walsh, Parcells only cared about one thing: Football. Ditka cared about ...well Ditka.
@@kevinw8688I Disagree, maybe if the Bears had a great owner they would have won more Super Bowls, spend money and if the Bears had a healthy consistent QB like a Marino or an Elway the Bears win 3 Super Bowls...the Best defense for 1 year is the 85 Bears, after that Super Bowl win the Bears, Defense fell a part or lost players to free agency something the Steelers didn't have to worry about...back to back shut outs in the playoffs has only been done once and that was by the Bears...The 85 Bears destroyed QBs,..the most violent game in NFL history was the Bears vs the Raiders in 1984 ruclips.net/video/vdFDPUOHp4I/видео.html
@@kevinw8688 So after you watch the video between the Bears vs the Raiders most violent NFL game; that game alone makes the Steelers defense look like a bunch of pussyfarts.
@@kevinw8688 Plus the 70's teams like the Steelers stayed together and the Steelers were not as greedy as the players of the Bears and the owners of the 80's,..it's always about money.
The buccaneers did not get enough credit!!!! #5 come on at least better then the Seahawks...
I agree.
I feel like the lob is better than the bucs but yeah they were a really good defense
@@Johnnyprc The Hawks were not even in the same league as that Bucs defense. The Hawks are lucky to be on the list.
Oh man...that 2003 Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense.
I remember, I was 18 years old. My girlfriend and i were from Boston and had decided to move to Florida that year (2002). We found a really nice, really cheap 1 Bdrm apartment in Clearwater and moved in April of '02.
I had just started getting into NFL football the year before when the Patriots had won their first Super Bowl (I'm from Boston).
So i watched it every Sunday. Anyway, there was no *NFL Network* back then so i was stuck watching local games and prime time games. I quickly became a huge Buccaneers fan. With Warren Sapp and Mike Alstott -both of whom could run through a brick wall with ease- Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, Ronde Barber, and the rest of that potent, almost deadly offense that every other team's offense was almost scared to go up against.
At the time, I considered myself lucky to live there while the Bucs were dominating the NFL. It was pretty amazing. Every bar you went to- in Tampa, Clearwater, or all the way to Orlando- all had a ton of *_"GO BUCS!!"_* posters and cardboard cutouts everywhere! It was pretty awesome!
I was a bartender myself at a nice bar in Orlando. Met some really great people while i was living there, as well as some very... "interesting" people as well, LoL 🤨
The steel curtain anyone of there super bowl teams in the 70"s defenses there's a argument. Even the Oakland Raiders defense 1976 is in the mix.
Steelers fans enjoyed the smash mouth Steeler defense much more than the offense.
In fact, when the offense took the field it was time to go to the snack bar or toilet.
In SB XX the Bears D allowed the fewest yds rushing in SB history. In SB IX the Steelers allowed the fewest total yds in SB history. Two elite defenses. The main difference was the Steelers accomplished this against a HOF qb. (Fran Tarkenton)
In SB IX the Vikings ran at the Steelers 21 times. They only picked up 17 total yards on those 21 runs. Two weeks earlier in the AFC Championship, the Raiders ground game finished with 21 carries for only 29 yards against the Steelers. So in two straight playoff games combined, the Steelers were run at 42 times and allowed only 50 yards on the ground. That is staggering...
Nice to see a few more underrated defenses. Not just ones that were simply picked out because they led their team to a championship.
I just started watching this, but the 1986 Bears and the 2007 Patriots better be on here. I didnt watch football in 1986 (that's the year i was born), but i remember very well the '07 Pats defense. Some really great future HoFers on that team's defense. They are the #2 reason the Pats were undefeated that season (Reg. Season). With the #1 reason, of course, being the Brady/Moss Show.
any defensive list has to have the 1991 Eagles in the top 3 or its just shitty, also 2015 Broncos a bit higher, Manning was a total bum at that point
no
completely agree man, that eagles defense is the only defense in NFL history to come 1st place in every defensive category in the same season... ever...
Mixperience You're wrong. Do some more homework.
The Steel Curtain 4 super bowls 4 hall of gamers anď. Greenwood and Shell should make 6
Hell nah
That 🔵Chicago🐻 defense, omg😵
As a Bears fan, yes OMG, won a single Super Bowl and never got back. Mike Ditka was part of the reason for that. He simply put was a terrible fucking coach, as long as people responded to his whim he was good, but as soon as there was a variance of viewpoints, he couldn't figure out how to facilitate divergent opinions. From the way he handled Flutie, to the stupidity of calling the scab Bears the "real Bears", to his public fighting with Harbaugh, the stupidity of dealing with the media, the commercials, sitcoms and other assorted non-football bullshit. Ditka could have been good (he KNEW how to coach, told Buddy Ryan to go into a Nickel against Marino in that 85 game but Buddy kept blitzing, but I gotta wonder why didn't Ditka actually make the all and not a suggestion.), but in the end he became a joke and a bad coach, focused on his own ego. The 1980s Bears winning ONLY ONE Super Bowl is a critique of the coaching, PERIOD. Joe Gibbs was better, Bill Parcells was better. And Bill Walsh was better, Ditka was a poser.
steel curtain defense is the best and I`m a broncos fan
I think history will remember the Legion Of Boom as the best defense of all time. Four straight seasons of being the number 1 scoring defense in the NFL and they shut out the most explosive offense in NFL history in Superbowl 48.
Broncos that year wasn't the most explosive offense in NFL history buddy. They was dangerous but not that dangerous!!!
@@globalsetdarkpool8276 Right, the highest scoring offense in the league's history wasn't "that dangerous". What are you talking about?
Legion of boom #1 man
2017 Cleveland Browns
ozark 89 😂😂😂
Whats with the video on Seahawks? Is that the best quality you could find in all the videos of the Legion of Boom?
I’d argue that the 15 Broncos defense should be easily in the top five maybe 3 because of how pass happy the league is now and how the rules are to benefit the offense more than it used to be. Also the fact that the Broncos offense led the league in 3 n outs meaning their defense was on the field more than it should’ve been
the Los Angeles Rams organization fielded a defense that conceded the least points-yards and had the most QB sacks in football the first 15 seasons of the Super Bowl era, from 1966-1980. based entirely on the numbers (not opinions), the Los Angeles Rams defense was the best in football on a consistent basis, during an era that is regarded by the pundits as the most physically brutal in NFL history..
I saw this comment and decided to do some research. The Packers held that honor for the first 4 years then the Vikings held the mark for the next 8 years through 1977. The Rams then took over until 1982 when the Vikings became king again. Rams took over again after the 1984 season. The Rams were consistent for a long time but there is no time that they were number one in the league for consecutive years. The Rams best 8 year stretch ever is miles and miles behind the Steelers and Vikings best 8 year stretches.
as a ravens fan, steel curtain should be #1
As a Steeler fan I agree but then again, I'm biased. LOL. The Ravens weren't too shabby either! They sort of became a carbon copy of the Steelers in that they played great defense and ran the ball effectively. Made for some great games and allowed them to be successful as well. It's weird that the same team could do in Baltimore what it never could in Cleveland by emulating it's biggest rival. Sadly, both teams have sort of relied on offense in recent years due to losing some great defensive talent to retirement.
I was living in Riverside, CA when Billick won with the Ravens. It was cool to see the area proud of one of their hometown boys winning the big one. Now I live in Ohio, where he was born...weird.
wargasm74, Billick is a cousin of mine but he's distant and my great grandmother that was a Billick was a diehard Steeler fan!
That's cool Yeti tracker 66! The only thing anyone in my family is famous for is drinkin'!!!!
Ndudi Enwereuzor I agree overall through years the Steelers having best total defense yes, this list though just going by season, I'd put Ravens 2 behind bears caz 76 def was awesome but we didn't win SB, IMO
I think what makes that Ravens Defense so special is they had no offense to rely on. That team literally went weeks without scoring an offensive touchdown. They had no weakness from the line to the secondary.
Exactly why they are the best defense of all time. The top 2 defenses listed here had an offense. Not to mention the ravens set the record for only allowing 165 points in 16 games 🤦🏽♂️
I watched every Bucs game in the 2002 season and the defense really carried the team. Quite a few games the defense scored more than the offense.
NFL record for a 16 game season - 165 points, 2000 Ravens. They recovered 26 fumbles, twice as many as the 2nd best team. Gave up only 970 yards rushing, an NFL record for a 16 game season. And a league best 2.7 yards per carry and 5 rushing TDs. Tony Siragusa, Sam Adams, Michael McCrary, Rob Burnett, Adalius Thomas, Ray Lewis, Peter Boulware, Jamie Sharper, Rod Woodson, and two young CBs from the draft, Chris McCallister and Duane Starks.
Waaaaiiiit a minute. The guy who created this video didn't use any relevant facts to support his arguments. It's not fair for you to up and start using them to win yours.
By no doubt the '76 Steelers are the # 1 defense of all time!
Nah 1985 bears GO BEARS
Both of y’all are downright wrong the 77 falcons are the best, and they invented the gritz blitz which, coincidentally the bears used a very similar strategy only a few years later
Yaboi Jack But the Bears used it way better. So, your point is?
Yep. My take. No way to argue against it, the 76 Steelers were basically the same team as the 74 and 75 teams that rolled to 2 Super Bowls. 76 Steelers didn't win it all, but in their last 9 games, they gave up 28 points, in 8 of the games they didn't give up a touchdown. Think about that. NO TOUCHDOWNS in 8 of 9 games. They lost in the AFC Title game, the Raiders were really good (13-1 that year) and the Steelers backfield was out injured. It happened how it happened and without that flag, we are left debating it, but the mid 70s Steelers (74-76 and the last two Steelers champs though they were aging on defense were among the elite in the NFL, nearly an entire decade of total domination) are EASILY the greatest defense in history of the sport. In fact, there should be no debate on that one.
ravens
and we are back...2019 will top this list you mark my words...when you play the 2019 BEARS bring a lot of body bags...
2019 Patriots through seven games have allowed the fewest points in nfl history at 47. Next closest was the 2000 ravens at 72. Again through first 7, but still incredible
Also about 18 interceptions the 2019 Patriots have intercepted so far.
77 Falcons were the statistically best defense of all time
Wrong, 02 Bucs beated the Ravens pass defense cuz.. 48-21...
And also, are you sure about that the ravens beat it? 77 Falcons is even better.
In 1976 Pittsburgh sent 8 defensive starters to the Pro Bowl
The 86 Giants had the #1 rushing defense but against the pass, they finished #19 & #2 overall
They were lucky Martin slammed McMahon and busted his arm on a dirty play. Bears Defense was still firing off that year but couldn't find consistent QB play.
Good list although I would have the 2004 patriots, 1977 falcons and 2019 patriots on it
The steel curtain is the best defence of all time.
No that’s the 85 bears
Atlanta falcons 1976 forgotten defense best ever seen in the NFL
There is a reason why they are forgotten, they didnt even make the playoffs. They will the "Best Defense in a 14 game season prior to 1978 NFL rules changes to Never Make the Playoffs" award.
@Mitchy Kramer Offense was God awful was the main reason the main reason the didn't make the playoffs, but that shouldn't be the reason they're looked over.
Alan Page was named league MVP that year - 1971. A defensive tackle. That is nuts.
Page was so quick ...(sounds like a joke, but isn't) he was often called for offsides penalties when he wasn't offsides - because nobody could believe how quick he was!
The Top Three Defenses ever. 1985 Bears, 1986 Giants, and The Steelers defenses of the 4 Superbowl years! To rank these defenses any less is insulting! This is coming from someone old enough to have seen them all!
The 77 falcons hello!!!!! Seriously I’m done with these lists!
The Grits Blitz
That was a one hit wonder defense..thats why it's not on the list, no need for a grown man to be so sensitive because they didn't put who you wanted on the list, that's kid shit
I love how the 2002 Buccaneers are somehow worse than the 2013 Seattle Seahawks, even though the only stats that are provided all lean in the Buccaneers' favor. If a team give less yards per play and per game, less points allowed per game, and have a better turnover percentage than another defense, the how is that not a better defense.
Andrew Samide 2002 bus are better than 2013 Seahawks.
Probably because they accounted for era and felt the Seahawks had to play in a league far more slanted against them than the 2002 Bucs. Personally I think it's a tough call.
The defensive style that the 2002 Buccaneers played the "Tampa 2" was put together by former head coach Tony Dungy. Dungy learned that defense from hi 2 years playing for Pittsburgh in 1977 and 1978. He learned it from Bud Carson.
Offenses were better in 2014
What a lot of people don't take into consideration is that defense was played completely different back in 2002 you didn't have to worry about getting penalized as much compared to defense today where you get called for unnecessary roughness because you didn't give the receiver a chance to turn up field on you. So I'd say if a defense in 2013 can at least keep up with a defense from 2002 then the 2013 defense is probably better because think of how well that defense would have done with the 2002 rulebook.
It's nice to look back and glorify your favorite teams; but, that is it. They are opinions based on memory and statistics riddled with varients of the times rules and acceptable defensive and offensive tactics, which most of even the experts shy away from. It would be an interesting project to weigh those variants appropriately to get to that question on what are the best teams.
2000 Ravens was unreal.
77 falcons are the greatest defensive team of all time statistically
where are the 77 falcons, there the best defense ever
they only allowed 9.2 average amount of points per game
Look I believe the steel curtain is #1 simply because they are the only franchise that took on the persona of the city and till this day that still exist.
77 falcons were the best
They win SB?
And the bucs 12.2 and the best pass defense ever and one of the best defensive showings in a Super Bowl if not the best... it’s cuz the falcons and bucs aren’t glamorous like those other teams were... shit Ray Lewis talking to Cowherd said the bucs defense of 02 is arguably the best of all time... idk how the FUCK the 13 hawks rank higher? Whatever though
@xCodeh You Suck B
Great arguments, all have good points loved them all but would have to put steelers 1 because of their secondary
Anyone ever heard of the 77 falcons. They had the lowest score per game. Even lower then the 85 Bears. They never made it to the playoffs because the offense was horrendous. Look it up if you don't believe me
The 1976 Steelers had five shutouts in 14 games think about it
Jonathan Spatafore - no the 2000 Ravens had 5 shutouts in a full season, the MVP and no offense to keep them fresh and FREE AGENCY , Steelers didnt ...think about that !!
Nice try but they only had four and they did play in more of a scoring era but they fall short sorry
Also thats 5 outta 14 for pit not 4 outta 17 get it
AND 2 other games they only allowed a FG. The NFL ALSO changed the rules to nullify the Steelers D, taking away down the field bump and run coverage in the 70's.
In the last 9 games of the season, the Steelers allowed a grand total of 29 points and the league changed the rules because of how physical their defense was, it's called the Mel Blount Rule, over a 5 year period from 72-76, the Steelers had 3 different players win the DPOY 4 times, in 1976 the Steelers entire defense made the first team or second team, ALL PRO....think about that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1991 eagles hands down
If Cunningham didnt get hurt in the 91 season opener it probably wouldve been Philly at Washington in the NFC Championship. That D was LEGIT
The 2015 Broncos deserve to be higher considering our offense was abysmal and their opponent in SB 50 was not only the #1 offense, but they beat down their opponents in blowouts in the playoffs. In the SB, an offense that averaged over 30 points was held to only 10 points. How is that not top 5 style dominance?
How about the 1997 Atlanta Falcon's Gritz Blitz (Jerry Glanville)? 8 years before the 46 defense. The inspiration for the 46 defense. Better stats than the 46 defense.
BlackBirdBlitz that was 1977
where is the Orange crush d the doomsday d or even the 83 9ers d such underrated squads
1977 broncos are 30 on my list
stupid idiot don't forget the grit blitz defense of the falcons in 77
77 Falcons
+TheAnimationLads yes most definitely
hey, stupid idiot, what about the Los Angles Rams... ? from 1966 to 1980, the L.A Rams organization had the most #1 rankings in team defense( yards & points allowed) than any organization in pro football...also, even though QB sacks weren't an official stat until 1982 i'm pretty sure the L.A Rams had the most QB sacks in those 15 seasons..
2008 Steelers was insane too
I never realized how MUCH better that '76 Steeler Defense was than that '85 Bears Squad til I seen your numbers there. 20 less yards a game, 1/2 yard less per play, and nearly 3 points less PER GAME!!! They finished up with under 10 points a game after a horrible first 5 games, then i think they only gave up like 2 offensive touchdowns THE REST OF THE SEASON!!! To go with 6 Shutouts in 9 games! Sorry Chicago, You guys are Absolutly right there battling for 2nd, but that Steel Curtain D of '76 Was a Freak of Nature, Period.
Broncos 2015 is before Seahawks....that's not even an opinion; better stats, Harder schedule, and they won a ring with little to no offense.
Gatorade Me, Bitch Seahawks beat the greatest offense of all time 43-8... Seattle's lead the league in points allowed the last 5 years straight. Never done before
niether were that good the 2015 broncos were not in the top 40 and the 2013 seahawks were 27th
what list are you looking at? Any Top 10 defense list will have Seattle top 4 and Denver top 10
Wesley why??? Denver was statistically better and gameplay wise. Their defense boasted an incredible front 7 along with a shutdown secondary. They also played in the AFC not the NFC (with little competition). The Broncos D did better against better teams....
So you're trying to tell me that the 2015 Carolina Panthers were better than the statistically, greatest offense in NFL history '13 Broncos. OOOOOOK
bears one year... Pitt... dynasty
Brian Callahan doesn't matter if the Steelers were a dynasty were talking best d fences here come on now
you are right bears was actually two great years but the steelers had the second best 8 year run ever from 1972 to 1979. only the vikings from 69 to 76 were better.
The bears are still better
If it is for one year I agree the bears. But over a couple of years a period of time. The steelers of the 70s
Remember, I am an eagles fan,But the Steel curtain wasn't just great for one year, they we're great for 5 or 6 years
I'll never forget.
How is the Steel Curtain not number one? The guys in the video LITERALLY said they were...
Pickled Bass na 85 bears were the best of all time
@@alecsanders7193 they were amazing, but the steel curtain was legendary.
Cough* 77 falcons are better
They were the best, and it with same player's. Year in and out. Steelers.
@@butchhill5656 Exactly, a steel dynasty 👍
2000 Ravens were the best. They gave up 3 points in two playoff games against a good Broncos and Gannon led Raiders team. Ten points to the Titans that were arguably better than the 1999 SB Titans that should have beat the Greatest Show on Turf. And basically shut out the Giants except for a rare ST kickoff return for a TD in a blow out.
The '85 Bears gave up 0 points in 2 playoff games...10 points total overall!!
raisins BOUGHT the 2000 SB..Ray "stab em up" Lewis should have been serving a life prison term for murder
As good as the Ravens were, the 1985 Bears allowed 10 points in 3 playoff games
I recall reading that no other defense was better statistically than the '69 Chiefs. They were #1 in four important categories. Among them rushing, scoring, passing.
The '77 Falcons defense gave up "only" 129pts that season! The "Grits Blitz" was DOMINANT, under Jerry Glanville. BLASPHEMOUS! DOC.
2012 Ravens Safeties - Ed Reed and Bernard Pollard < Eric Weddle and Tony Jefferson will both finish as top 5 Safeties. Ravens defense will be top 5 and lead the league in interceptions. Suggs will get back to double digit sacks.
85 Bears definitely number 1 !!
Man There Were 3 Great Defenses In '77,ATLANTA, DENVER, And The Super Bowl Champs DALLAS
You need to consider the 1963 Chicago Bears for this list. They allowed 10.3 pts per game that season. As a reference, the 1975 Steelers, on this list, allowed 11.6 and the '85 Bears [#1 on this list] allowed almost 12.
The 77 Falcons allowed under 10 a game.so the 85 Bears CANT be #1.Sacks yes,points allowed per game,NO
A truly accurate list would only have one team from this century on it: 2000 Ravens. The rules have hamstrung the defenses so much that it's a completely different game now.
Jeff Brown won't that mean defense today is a lot harder? Lol
Gatorade: Absolutely, it's harder today in most respects. I see your point. The problem is it's impossible to see how good a defense can be today, since they aren't really allowed to play defense. Great point, though!
2002 bucs?
The 2002 Bucs are a top 5 defense all time.
Then you gotta mention the 2013 Seahawks, they utterly dominated even with the rules helping the offense, and they shut down the best offense statistically the NFL had ever seen in Super-Bowl 48 ... Broncos averaged 37 points a game all year, they scored 8 against Seattle ....
Steel Curtain is #1
The monster of the midway
Well done...for whatever it's worth...I agree with this list 100%
85 Bears
85 Bears SUCK!!! 76 Steelers would kill them
77 falcons bud u missed them greatest defense of all time
85 bears were way better
@ 1 im not a kid and yes they are
@ the 85 bears were way better than shits burg
@ yes they are 85 bears are the best ever period
@ 85 bears are the best ever i proved you know nothing about the sport besides football is only the third best sport in the world anyway
2017 Ravens - Brandon Williams, Michael Pierce, Kaufusi, Draft Pick Wormley, CJ Mosley, HOF SUGGS, Matt Judon, DP Tim Williams, Eric Weddle, Tony Jefferson, Ladarius Webb, DP Marlon Humphrey, Jimmy Smith. This defense will be Legendary - TONY JEFFERSON. I wonder if CB Tavon Young can return for the playoffs? Maurice Canady is another CB to watch for. Potential first time Pro-bowl players - LT Ronnie Stanley, S Tony Jefferson, NT Brandon Williams, WR Breshad Perriman. Potential DROY candidates - CB Marlon Humphrey and OLB and pass rusher Tim Williams. LG Alex Lewis is the Ravens next Marshal Yanda. Perriman and Wallace are going to tear the tops off some of these defenses with Maclin in the slot and Woodhead catching passes out of the backfield. Perriman will be in the same conversation as Antonio Brown and AJ Green. Ozzie has been getting bargain after bargain in FA and are still looking to add a RT.
You was wrong ass hell 3yrs ago 😆
