  • Even while playing cricket as a kid, Sunil Gavaskar batted for so long that his friends used to lie about him being out or tell him that it's somebody else's turn to bat. It was because of his great gameplay that India won a Test series against the West Indies for the first time in 1971. To know more about the legendary opening batsman, watch Mid Wicket Tales With Naseeruddin Shah.

It's a fantastic performance. But the West Indian attack was one of the weakest bowling line ups in their history. He may have scored against a better attack as well. Gavaskar went on to become the greatest opening batsman of all time. Indians can be very proud of him.

When Gavaskar played, he faced the best fast bowling attack ever in the history of cricket. Even spin legends of that time used to worry about his wicket. Now imagine this....he faced Marshall, Goel Garner, Jeff Thompson, Denis Lillie, Andy Roberts, Imran Khan, Richard Hadley...without any helmets, just with scull guard. He is a legend and it's foolishness to compare him with the modern cricket batsmen. He could have still played for another 5 years when he retired in 1987. He faced the world's most fearsome fast bowling without a helmet. He is undoubtedly one of the the best batsman in the world. So much of cricket as its being played now a days, he would have crossed 25000 runs. He is a legend

At the prime of his career he played only few tests as test series were not conducted as frequently as today. When he reached 30 years of age he played only 50 tests... in that 50 tests he scored 20 centuries including 3 doubles...truly bradmanseque... had he played more tests at the peak of his career like modern batsman do, nobody would have touched his statistics.

    • @pssabu09

West Indies bowlers tried to bounce him out on many occassions. But soon gave up because they realized it was a futile exercise. Gavaskar being very short (5.5") could duck under the ball or weave out of the way very easily and once the bowlers got tired he would just whack them with precise timing and proper technique. He was a very good and technically correct batsman. He was the real Little Master or Maestro. Other one is duplicate flat track bully. Only draw back I ever found was his obstinate nature like the incident in Austratali when he threatened to boycott the test when given out LBW by the umpire.

"Sunil is the most complete batsman that India has produced..I don't believe any Indian batsman can be better than Sunil" Bedi said.
Prasanna said that as India did not have any quality fast bowler then, Gavaskar played the spinners at the nets, only to face the world's top pacers of those times with aplomb during Test matches.
"He played on uncovered wickets, without any protective gear but still scored over 10,000 runs. He successfully took on the great Caribbean fast bowlers like Michael Holding and Andy Roberts. Gavaskar is indeed the best Indian batsman I had seen," he said.
Comparing Gavaskar with Sachin Tendulkar, Prasanna said: "Sachin used to play with so many protective guards. But still I saw him closing his eyes or the ball striking his helmet. That's not the sign of a brave player."

The great Little Master Sunil Gawaskar!
We were fortunate to have witnessed that era of greatest International cricketers played that is unmatched, in the history of Test Cricket!
Loved, the all round sprit that was rejuvenating of our era.
Yes those were the days of guts, valour and masculinity with all other unknown safety Equipments or gadgets that are use now a days I Test Matches!
That’s why the statistical comparisons whenever made with Sportsmen’s Records do not stand valid as the ‘level of playing field’ has drastically changed, specially in few games as Cricket.
No restrictions in bouncers, no helmet, no chest pad, no elbow guard, no thigh pads, ....facing a fast and furious pace bowler of the calibre.
Thank Almighty God for all the immense blessings that He has showered on all of us that we celebrated the Cricket Festivities era!

They were not deadly bowlers, they were very ordinary bowlers. I am sure no one has heard their names, except that of Sobers in the below list, who was an old man in the second last year of his career.
None of Marshall, Garner, Holding, Roberts, Croft had yet debuted and Griffith and Wes Hall had retired. I am a great fan of Gavaskar, have nothing against him but the truth is that the bowling attack was very ordinary.
      The bowlers in 1971:
      Keith boyce
      Noreiga
      Shillingford
      Sobers
      Holder
      Foster
      Davis
      Shepherd
