  • The '60s and the '70s were considered to be magical for the Indian Cricket Team as it was evolving and the world was witnessing that it was wise no more to take this team lightly. This was the time when the Spin Quartet of India was marking their positions as the deadliest spinners in the world. The Spin Quartet consisted of 4 unique spinners - Erapalli Prassana, Bishan Singh Bedi, B.S Chandrashekhar, and Srinivas Venkatraghavan. To find out more about why were they known for being who they were, watch Mid Wicket Tales With Naseeruddin Shah.

Tonnes of respect for Mr. Chandrasekhar. God creates men like him once in 100 years. Again, like I comment in other videos....I know I'm repeating myself but "It was my father who told me the stories of these cricket greats as he was an avid cricket fan at that time".

Did this team need today's Indian test pitches to win matches for India? They were genuine spin bowlers. They didn't need the pitches, they could defeat the batsmen in the air. That's pure skill.

You are wrong . Those days I’m home games they used to make true turning tracks .
Have a look at their overseas record not so great .
Today a bowler plays in 3 formats of the game so any day they bowl more.

@@cybermenindia No Sandeep They performed well in England, Australia, West Indies and New Zealand. I can recall my memory in 1975 பிரசன்னா took 8 wickets in Auckland. 1971 West Indies series India Won Venkatraghavan and Chandra Sekar did well. Even in Australia in Melbourne Chandrasekar took 6 for 56 and 6 for 52 or 56 in both Innings of Mrlbourne Test. In Kingston West Indies Chandrasekar had good 6 wickets spell. 1971 India test series win over England were achieved mainly due to Chandrasekar. Venkatraghavan took 22 wickets in the series of 1971 against West Indies with very good economy against Sobers Team.

Must say the batting technique against spin were poor in those days. So spinners will take advantage of that. You don't really require help from pitches. Today's scenario is not like that

I remember the 1978 visit of the Indian team to Pakistan. The cricketing ties were revived after 18 years and only Mushtaq Muhammad had survived from the last tour. But what won my heart-and the heart of many Pakistanis- was that Bishen Bedi read an appeal for O negative blood for a cancer patient. He noted it down and called them, and donated his blood so that the young boy may live a few days longer. What a gesture! It was greatly appreciated by all on our side of the border. President Zia personally thanked him on behalf of the entire Pakistani nation. While Pakistan won the series, I was actually sorry to see how he and many others were treated after the loss by the Indian authorities.

I wouldn't go that far. They were instrumental in getting India's first series wins in new Zealand, england and west indies, but at no point could you say that India was a dominant test team. That's because our seam bowling was the worst of all test playing nations, and we only had three batsmen who averaged 40 plus between 1971 and 1975 : gavaskar, Vishwanath and amarnath.

Amazing spinners all of them. They came unstuck against Zaheer Abbas on flat tracks in 1978. But that's because Zed was a brilliant player off the back foot with a very high backlift. Derek Understood told me he was the hardest batsman he ever bowled to. Against Underwood in county cricket, Derek told me he seemed to be 200 not out everytime.

A better batsman, a fantastic fielder and a very clever captain.
He got the least no of tests.
All the four are fantastic spinners having unique talents.
If they started career now all the four will be high demand in ipl.
Venkatraghavan will fetch the maximum price.
All the four will end up with records difficult to surpass just like tie in 20 grand slams in tennis among 3 legends.

All four spinners were great technicians, master of spin ,equally good..Chandra was sometimes faster than Jeff Thompson his googlies unplayable..Prasanna was the master of flight, could spin the ball on a granite, deceptive in the air ..Bedi, left arm spinner, most accurate among them ,a real match winner......Venkit the most intelligent bowler , i rate him as the best..There were other spinners too Bapunathkarni and subash Gupte..

Venkat was a brilliant fielder and also the best of the quartet as s batsmen. His bowling was also very good. He played a big part in the victories against West Indies and England in 1971. In fact of the quartet he has always been given the least importance. He was also a good captain

    Don't glorify unnecessarily.
Pace and spin together is good weapon
Sometimes pace can take you on their own but not spin because spin requires dear pitches.
