QHD Gaming laptops are here! But do you really need QHD for Gaming or are the true benefits in other places! What do you guys think? In case you missed it I reviewed the MSI GE66 Raider with a RTX 3080 - ruclips.net/video/e4dFF-KeT1c/видео.html
Hey Matt! I had a question about playing 1080p on a 1440p screen, does the resulting image looks blurry? Ratio of no of pixels between a 1080p & a 4k image is 1:4 but, its 1:1.77 between a 1080 and a 1440p image which makes pixel mapping not that good and could result in a blurry image. Would love to get your input on this!
@@moneshbhalodi2379 did you see the tomb raider comparison in the video (2:12) ? There was a 1080 scree on the left and a 2k screen downscaled to 1080p on the right, when we look at the difference the right one didnt seem blurry, in the contrary it seems more sharp, i know that's weird, i was thinking like you before i saw this video....
I prefer 1080P with high framerates over QHD. The quality of the display itself is more important in my opinion.
@@sehitovic Yes bro i saw that comparison in his video but, seeing things side by side in real life vs seeing things in a compressed RUclips video is still different i think. Gotta see one in real life to know the difference.
@@paulc1014 I'm eyeing the Asus Zephyrus G15 3060 and almost all of the variants have the 100% DCI-P3 1440p 3ms 165hz displays. The 1080p variant available for is 144hz but only 72% sRGB and response time could be higher too. Maybe they will release the better 240hz 3ms 1080p display later.
We have QHD panels, we have high refresh rates, we have big batteries, now all we need is better cooling tech
won't ever happen, no income for them if laptops last forever
That's why cooling mats are sold. Just make sure you get a decent one.
yes but its saturated
you cannot tweak cooling system to whole new level unless you use new materials
air is the secondary coolant and we cannot tweak it no matter what ! so its limited by specific heat capacity but we might push HT by taking more and more air (air intake ) which needs beefier fans which inturn need more juice to run
better buy a cooling pad or buy a PC like legends say
Some companies are getting pretty great results from more refined vapour chamber solutions, like the blade 14 and the AMD Strix 15.
I think a more realistic solution to this problem is taking a page out of Apple's book (I know, right?) And developing a powerful CPU / GPU that doesn't suck your power grid dry. Don't really care if we need to abandon x86 to do it. If the new macbook air can get amazing performance on sub 10w with passive cooling, SURELY a windows PC in the future can get baller performance with less than 100w on a type c charger in a nice slim package.
The new dell xps has some pretty amazing cooling system. Like way ahead of others.
I am having two different options for equally specced laptops. However was confused that just on a 15.6 inch machine overloading it with twice the number of pixels will reduce the FPS for really demanding games like MS Flight Sim. I don't want to compromise either on texture details or FPS just for the sake of extra pixels I might or might-not notice. So, the trick that you told to use 1080 on a QHD panel. Don't you think it will make the experience worse than on a 1080 on a 1080 (Full HD) panel natively? This laptop is both for gaming and other work.
I've been waiting for QHD laptops for years now. I'm so glad that they are finally making them.
Me too!
Hope we have stocks and get our hands on it before 2031 .
@@HariHaranHarry Best get a laptop now before the shortage effects the supply...it's already happening. I'm lucky to get my aorus 15g in march, now it went up like $300 -400 most of the time.
@@HariHaranHarry 2031????
Too late for me. Now I can't see the small stuff.
Is it worth it to wait for the xps to get a 30 series GPU upgrade or just buy the xps 15 on sale right now for 15% off?
Does QHD work well on the Zephyrus G14 or it is better to step up to the G15?
When settings are changed to 1080p is there a difference between it and an original 1080p screen?
Thank you so much for making this video! This cleared up so much confusion for me! Very Helpful!
What about Streaming Netflix, Prime Video ? Could you tell us the video resolution when youre watching 4k Netflix on your QHD screen? I'm really concerned whether I'd be able to watch netflix content in 1440p and how'd 1080p content look on a 1440p panel? some say it looks really bad.. could you plz confirm?
I have no idea why they thought gamers wanted 4K @ 60Hz. I don't think I know a single gamer who would rather have that over 1080p @ 144Hz
Then bro,Is this laptop really good for programming....please reply me
Thanks for the summary and suggestions. Very helpful.
So i have an msi ge63 raider with the full rtx2080 but my 15.6 screen is only 1080p. Could i get a qhd 15.6 pannel from a model like msi ge66 raider and put it in my laptop? I don't want to sell my laptop but this upgrade is very tempting and i have many doubts on if this is possible
Is it still worth getting a QHD if I’m planning to buy a 30” monitor anyway ?
I am searching for the best 17inch screen for viewing media(like movies), QHD or UHD is better? Also i am wondering about glossy oled screens
Great commentary and perspective. Thank you,
the main benefit of 4k over 1440p is that if you fallback to native 1080p resolution for gaming, you get perfect scaling... also applies to 1080p video, and you get more scaling options
What do you mean by this
At 1080p, I love setting custom scaling to 113%. Not as crisp as 150% scaling at 1440p but it will give you the same real-estate.
What happens when you play some games on a qhd screen but at 1080? Is there black borders or that?
What about movies isnt it supposed that 1080p content looks better on a native 1080p screen ? The same also with games since qhd doesnt scale 1:1 or am I wrong ?
I m waiting for review of asus strix g17 rtx 3070 . Is their any chance of it ?
Facts! Another under appreciated feature is 16:10 displays. I can’t stress enough how much of a difference that seemingly simple display feature makes esp when you have been so used to 16:9.
in a good way? in getting a 16:10 qhd laptop soon and im concerned of potential problems
@@Echelon111999 the only issue with 16:10 right now is when watching videos in full screen you will have black bars top & bottom since most media is 16:9. Otherwise apps make full use of the extra real screen real estate which is awesome.
another benefit is when gaming with enough dpi, you can disable AA entirely.
Another big thing pertaining only to 17 inch laptops: the 17 inch QHD panel (380 nits) gets much brighter than the 15 inch QHD and FHD options.
This was really helpful . Thank you.
Can anyone help i have a question so basically if i have a QHD display on a 15,6 inch does downscalling top 1080p will not be noticible as much on 15 inch laptop any recommendation is appreciated
i just one more informations in one screen on management games, with big data tables. why it has to be so expensive to get a 1440p 17" laptop ?
This is such a relevant topic 🙂 Thanks, man. Good job. Just ordered an MSI with a QHD+ screen, and my thinking was the same as yours here. Glad for the confirmation.
Glad I could help!
Jesus! Smoothest transition in to and out of a sponsor advert ever! Right in the middle too; almost too slick...
Also, totally helped me know which laptop to buy lol!
Which one did you buy bruh?
In QHD laptop if I Play games in 1080p resolution then game will run blurry??
Is it bad to play games 1080p res on QHD monitor in 16inch laptop to get better fps?
Is dell inspiron 16 plus 3k display good for reading and regular use
such an interesting video, cheers from Malaysia Matt!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks and stay safe!
Concise, solid advice. I like that.
Very helpful video. Thank you.
What to choose between 2.8k 90hz display or (1080p 60hz display with rtx 3050)
Matthew Moniz do you think that QHD will replace MKBHD tho?
Nope, because MKBHD is now using 8K UHD.
@@jevieyt ahead of the curve lol
Hi always nice videos. I whoud just show graphics score and cpu score separately in your reviews. That way we can all see how they perform. Like in time spy or firestrike instead of total score. Other than that nice job.
thnx for clearing this up. Thinking about getting the Razer Blade 15 and saw how QHD bumped up the price an almost extra £1k and had no idea why so yeah, FHD it is
Hey Mathew, how much windows scaling do you use on a QHD laptop display?
does anyone know if the razer blade 15 2021 supports egpu? there is no mention anywhere 😔
So are you saying I don’t need to buy this laptop I’m looking at currently? It’s a qhd 15” screen laptop with rtx 3070 and 165hz display. I currently have a 1080p laptop with 120hz display and rtx 2070 max q
Do you think its worth waiting for Zen 4 and lovelace to release due to the hardware shortages/scalping prices?
Of course. Performance aside (which is rumored to be x2.5) The reason we have scalping is because production doesn't meet demand. In 1-2 year's time when the market for the new consoles will be saturated and won't be produced in the same volume, more wafers will be free and available for those chips. More avaliability=closer to msrp prices. Scalping is basically a temporary artificial market created to sell a product at higher price due to low stock . Let's say if tomorrow we had 2.000 gpus per day available to buy directly at AMD/NVIDIA there would be no reason to buy any card pricier than msrp. These scalpers essentially bet on your desperation to get a new gpu in order to sell. Don't take the bait. Get an old gpu that does the job for now and wait. Patience always rewards. Unless you have the $$$$ to burn for firewood
Elucktronics might have it in the bag this year with qhd screens, ryzen processors, and 3080 graphics. The price is in the money too.
This is the one video that really explains it well to make that informed decision. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
Matt is right. Literally anyone who's owned a "Gaming laptop" knows 1080p 144hz is better than 4k 60hz.
True, but if the 4k is oled than it's a different story. I have an oled razer blade that's 60hz and I don't play competitive shooters so honestly I prefer the image quality way over the refresh rate
Duh
Not all 4K panels are 60Hz. The Razer Blade Pro 17 4K panel is 120Hz.
Yes but also no, OLED response times are 1ms so better than anything LCD can do, colours are better, blacks are better and at 60hz OLED provides the lowest input lag of any screen available. Also if you game AAA titles at max settings your probably not making full use of the 144hz panel. You can also probably overclock a 60hz panel to 75hz if you drop the 4K resolution
According to qhd laptop monitors they are usd 50 more on average
"4k 60Hz is child abuse"
- Matthew Moniz
very nice track suit, i like
What bout 4k oled?!
Is it worth it?
Thank you for this!
Why do you need to max out the Hz on your display? It's not what it's meant to be. Anything above 60Fps on 165 Hz with VRR perfect
I have bought the 2021 razer blade 15 advanced QHD 1440p 240hz, RTX3070, Gsync. I almost bought the Touch Oled display, 4k 60hz one but I opted for the higher 240hz. Do you think that I made the right choice? I am worry since this is my first ever gaming laptop. I have never owned a PC either, so I am not sure that I made the right choice. I would've bought the 4k version if it offered higher refresh rate.
You still happy with your Razer?
I've been searching for an answer to this question and this video answered it perfectly. Can't wait for the new g14 qhd to drop in April
hey so im looking to by the zephyrus g14 as well, so basically WQHD 120Hz would be better than FHD 144Hz right consdering i mostly play fps games?
@@pragyanbora9949 no
In CES 2021 we saw a lot of laptops that used the new QHD high refresh rate displays. But do you think that's a good idea??
The desktop 3080 barely handled Cyberpunk 2077 RTX in 1440p. I don't think laptops will do it better in many next-gen games.
Also almost every media content such as movies and TV series are produced in 1080p or 4k. And I have seen 1080p on 1440p screens. It's way worse and blurry than in native Full HD panels.
And finally, I mean they are laptops. They have smaller screens and hence a huge amount of PPI (Pixels per inch) So is the performance and battery loss really worth it?
.
One question. Im about to buy a laptop and did think the same about the 1080p content on a 1440p screen. My question is was it a old monitor where you did test the movies on the qhd screen ? Does 1080p on qhd really look more blurry ?
choosing between QHD and FHD on a 16" laptop right now. same model, same everything, except for the screen. screen is all the same it's just that QHD is also a bit brighter (400 nit vs. 300 nit), both 120 hz . was thinking about the same on the video consumption side. it's either you have to 720p for better scaling, or you have to use 1440p but not all content is available in this format. plus fan noise, battery issues, objectively... probably not worth it. Warming up to stick with FHD option.
Another banger of a vid Matthew 👍🏻👍🏻😎
Thank you ! ❤️
I like how he compared the 4k on 60hz to child abuse lmao, what a comparison
It’s not even funny. It’s quite disgusting.
Thanks man, this was really helpful ♥️
No problem 👍
Any battery life comparisons?
FHD all the way for laptops. Better frames and the video isn't that much worse. A lot of videos are in 1080p anyway so the 1440p is mostly unused. Sure 1440p looks better in games also but the frame decrease is not worth it.
Are all qhd screens 1440p?
I'm looking at getting a QHD gaming laptop but I'm really concerned how my videos in 720 and 1080 format will look on them. Are they scaled down without looking pixelated or blurry? My old 1080 laptop plays lower res videos without any of these issues.
Yeah people are really overlooking this fact, 720p videos already look terrible at 1080p, can't imagine how it'd look on QHD. I can't still understand why people so much prefer QHD monitors with such minimal benefits
@@dark-lord-720p has integer scaling at 1440p though, so i'd imagine it still looks good
did i watched a video about qhd displays or an ad about avira?
I heard 1080p videos will look blurry on a 2K display due to scaling. I’ve never seen a 2K display in real life before but I notice 1080p looks very sharp on my iPhone 11 Pro with weird resolution and it’s not blurry at all. So is the problem of 1080p on a 2K display exaggerated?
It will be really blurry on a 27 inch monitor but on a 15 inch laptop its not that big of a difference
Just want to say thank you. Recently purchased Omen 16 165Hz 1440p laptop was not sure about it but you have reassured me.
Is it a good laptop? I'm thinking about buying one myself
so playing games on qhd screen with 1080p resolution is exactly the same visually as playing native 1080p?
Yes, at least I see any significant difference between my old and new laptop, although you do notice the difference once you go from 1920x1080 to 2560x1440. And after you do you just don’t want to go back to 1080. I mean me I don’t. Dunno how to explain the feeling but screen becomes more sharp
@@SoraJustAGuy That's not what this review is telling, he claims you won't notice a difference between a 1080p and 1440p panel while gaming (on small laptop monitors).
No. It can be true with 4k because you can scale every pixel of 1080p to 4 pixels of 4k. But it always has to be 4x difference otherwise you get scaling artifacts.
What's that show at 3:30?
Any ideas guys for gaming most Fhd or Qhd ? Fhd 360hz or Qhd 165 hz in 17.3 inch Screen.
This was such a smart idea for a video. Most gamers understood 4k panels were not the way to go but these 2.5k panels make the choice between 1440p and 1080p more tricky. I haven't even started watching yet lol but just wanted to say i was looking forward to a video like this.
Thanks Christopher! I’m happy you like it
