You need to disconnect the battery before ripping metal shields off the motherboard, because you can short the powered rails and the laptop would be dead. Despite that good and short video showing on what needs to be done to upgrade these things :)
@@xibeon Disconnecting the battery is ALWAYS the first thing you should do when taking apart something. @@ActualRealKayamariOfficialVEVO Yeah nothing bad happened to any laptop I've ever opened and they were quite a few. The thing with damaging the laptop by not disconnecting the battery is a internet myth. Sure, it can happed to someone somewhere, but same goes with lightning strike or lottery winning.
@@xibeon Just because it's unlikely doesn't mean it's not a risk that should be taken. Disconnecting the battery takes three seconds to do and means the risk (even if it's as low as you think) is put to 0. that's better odds than leaving it connected. Why do you want to keep the battery plugged in in the first place? Also, if I'm working on something that's worth multiple hundred dollars you bet I don't want to take any risks in the slightest about frying it.
The inner design and expandability look quite good together with massive heat pipes. It reminds me of an old laptop from Dell that my cousin bought many years ago.
Actually, you shouldn't add more memory than you'll need. It actually proves to hinder performance. Using these faster nvme drives really makes more ram unnecessary. Check benchmarks with more vs less RAM online.
Thanks for including the 80 Wh battery upgrade section! The Legion really became the best overall gaming laptop of 2020 with these upgrades. Would've been nice to see if RAM with better timings and tuning further improved the experience.
Included RAM is CL22. There is no XMP supported on Legion 5, and better RAM is only CL20. The performance difference is really small, like 1-2 fps, if exists at all. CL20 HyperX Impact RAM kit is about 150-180$, totally not worth it, IMO.
@@mrgndx I see 3200 cl 16 modules gskill ripjaws sodimms that are 1.2v on newegg though. The absolute fastest sodimms are 3600 cl 16 and they are expensive as well as higher voltage at 1.35v.

You might be able to use the M.2 drive as well as a 2.5 inch SATA SSD at the same time if you take apart the 2.5 inch SSD by removing it's plastic housing. Inside that there's a high chance you'll have a small circuit board which is the SSD. After that you might even be able to have all three options, larger battery, SATA SSD, M.2 SSD(As long as that M.2 isn't the same port though, shouldn't be if the M.2 is NVME).
Tip: Disconnect the battery first so that you don't destroy your motherboard, because if by chance any screw fell on yhe motherboard it's going to destroy your Lappy. Remember guys better safe than sorry. 🙂🙂
I bought the Legion 5 based on JT's recommendation. I've been super happy with it and I've just now upgraded it using this video. This dude is the certified goat in the gaming laptop field. Clear, relevant information packaged in great videos. Thanks!
I like that Lenovo included the four SSD screws even though they are very much standard screws that are likely to come with the SSD as well. And their decision to specially design a piece of plastic to hold them is so smart as well. They could have just gone lazy and put them in the plastic bag with other accessories, which the user is unlikely to remember or even notice. It's details like this that make me approve of a product that much more.
Love how I found this video 3 days after putting in my 2.5 ssd. First time I've taken apart a computer and did any kind of installs. It went great, but fantastic content nonetheless!
Sometimes in this life you find the exact video you were looking for and this is one of those rare examples. I love this laptop. Best bang for buck ever. Also this channel is great. Subbed.
@@JarrodsTech (edit this is due to the application not being able to use the ram I had properly, I have 32gb of sodimm ddr4, and the *32 bit* application could only use about 4) Take the following with a grain of salt. And if your playing old titles on high settings, I was playing Microsoft Flight Simulator X (2006) and it crashed and gave an error similar to "Memory Exceeded." when I flew over Newark Liberty International.
Upgrading RAM isn't for higher framerates, it's so when you get a memory leak it doesn't completely crash your computer, and you can run 800 chrome tabs. It's also extremely useful for audio editing as you can run a lot of VSTs simultaneously, on 16GB you would get an instant crash on a complicated track. Also, let's say you build a program that's large like a video game, you may need more than 16GB just to build. Or if you want to rewrite a large Git history. Or if you're a scientist and you want to analyse a large dataset. I got 64GB last feb and since then my computer has never stalled and I am constantly running unity, photoshop, fl studio, resolve, bitbucket, rider, 100 tabs in firefox, thunderbird, filezilla, google sync, playstation and xbox devkit tools. Often streaming on slobs, have excel open in the background, a bunch of copies of ms paint with screenshots open, everything, my music editor, my vpn, steam, avast, parsec. I have never gone above 40GB even during memory leaks. I used to max 24GB all the time.

@@JarrodsTech I agree that the wooden table and black background looks better, but the white table gives better contrast especially when you're working with parts and taking things apart. Anyways thx for the video I literally just bought the same model (same specs even) cuz of your videos a week ago. My biggest concern after GPU and Screen refresh rate was thermals. I live in a hot climate so, thermals was a big concern for me, your videos played a huge part in making my decision and buying the legion 5 1660ti Ryzen 7 4800h / 16 gb/ 512 SSD. 😊
Does this mean the thermal paste never has to be reapplied on it? my current lenovo ideapad 520 is thermal throttling and I think the reason is that the thermal paste is dried out. If thats not an issue with the legion Ill be even more sold on it then I already am right now
I just bought a legion 5 yesterday from your reviews, next step was to upgrade ram and memory as it only came with 8gb and 256gb. Thanks a lot for your content!
My legion 5’s internals did not look like yours, at all. My HDD orientation was flipped, the m.2 drive didn’t have a place for me to screw in, and my battery was fucking massive and ran the whole way across the bottom. Like what the fuck
Also, if you experience micro-stuttering in-game, I suggest to turn off processor boost in power settings. The boost in my example caused thermal throttling (clearly visible in HWINFO64).
As an owner of this machine, I feel like some important topics were missed here. Upgrading RAM isn't just about capacity. Sometimes it is about performance. What will this machine do with tighter timings? What are the actual limits it will accept? Is there a 3400MT/s or faster kit available that will work? Can the cooling be upgraded? I know in the past, Lenovo has different cooling for different SKUs. I also own the 1660Ti version. Is the 2060 cooling module better? If so, would it be possible to upgrade to the 2060 cooling kit to improve temps? If you can, does that improve performance in any meaningful way?
@@Duran762 I was asking as the "upgrade guide" was missing the upgrades that appeared to be worth doing. It is common practice to have different cooling based upon the build. First I ran into that, was with the W520. Upgrading from a dual core to a quad core included a cooling upgrade. Upgrading from the low end to high end GPU involved a cooling upgrade. And you could purchase, and install that upgraded cooler yourself if you wanted to lower temps on parts that weren't maxed out for the platform. I assumed the same would apply to the Legion 5 - given the upgraded parts available. However, that topic was never approached by the author.
I have bought the Lenovo Legion 5 17 with Ryzen 7 5800H eight cores and 16 threads, RTX 3060 115+15W TDP, 17,3" 144Hz 1080p, White colored backlit truestrike keyboard, 16Gb DDR4 3200MHz CL22. I got it for 11990 SEK or 1449.19 in USD. And it's a high end beast. I have so far maxed all my games with good fps. Warzone maxed out with RT and DLSS on gives me a constant 100+ fps. Love it!
@@traderbear6518 I will take this time to recommend the legion 7! It has no air filtration, and a sort of mesh instead. It has the same bottom intake system, causing it to vacuum anything under the computer!
The 64gb RAM upgrade might not show much improvement in specific applications, but it will be useful for people managing workloads that require it, like virtual machines and docker along with other machine learning tasks. So its good that this laptop supports 64gb RAM.
It actually doesnt thats the thing…. I contacted lenovo support reps and they said though you can put in up to 64, anything past 16 will not provide much improvement due to the motherboards limits
I just wanna say thank you, you're the reason i bought legion 5 before and with your guide i was able to upgrade the storage myself,i always just pay someone to do ut cuz im scared of breaking anything lol but now that I've done it imma do everything myself if i have the tools
If you know what you're doing, I strongly recommend changing stock thermal paste for liqud metal (Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut in my case) Temperatures dropped from 98C° to ~75C° on CPU in full load, which is a nice improvement for longevity and performance of your HW.
utterly retarded idea. Liquid metal is a compound which includes galium. it is meant to seal die and shielding. it is not meant to go on the shielding as it will corrode the metal (gallium!). surefire way to kill your hardware. "improvement for longevity" my ass.
I got this laptop and it's awesome. I have the intel version and i've never had a problem with it. It dosen't overheat or anything like that. But the biggest downside is that it only has 3 modes which sucks, other than that everything else is just perfect.
Are these suggestions valid on the Legion 5 2021 too? Ram speed is slower too in that model? Wifi card can be upgraded too or has a better one now in this new model? (Talking about the ryzen 5 5600h and rtx 3060 model)
PCIe 3. It will accept PCIe 4 though it will run at PCIe 3 speeds. Though you will be able to upgrade to 4tb single sided PCIe 4. You're limited to a maximum of 2 tb single sided with PCIe 3. The dual sided 4tb PCIe 3 cards won't fit properly. They have to be single sided or they rub on side and overheat.
Literally just ordered one based on your other GPU reviews (with the rtx 2060) on sale - you seem to have a video for everything I need and no bs. A thankful sub for you!
Thanks for the video. I just upgraded the memory in my new 2024 Legion 7i. I also went from 32GB to 64GB (I used for my case Crucial RAM 64GB Kit (2x32GB) DDR5 5600MHz ). I must mention that when you start the laptop, screen will be blank for few minutes while it recognizes the new memory. Just wait and it should work.
Your Lenovo videos are always first rate. That said, I am a lifelong ThinkPad user and whenever I see what Lenovo has been selling since the overpriced but cheaply made T440 I wonder if we shall ever see true quality again. Obviously key components have become more powerful but the loss of so many ports, dumping of optical and penny pinching on SD bandwidth (where SDs are even fitted) has shown Lenovo's current management to be trading on a once great and distinctive pedigree. Actual machines are in fact little better than things costing 50% less. Dell also had a bad quality patch but seemed to learn from crashing sales. HP are mostly bad with the occasional machines being at Elitebook and Probook standards of a dozen years ago. Many of us in the area of education IT are going back to Clevo base models honed and finished by specialist companies and having so-called 'gaming computers' modified to serve our middle term needs. We also note that some ASUS models a few years old are more accessible and upgradeable than the Big Three. We think it possible that Framework and firms like it could herald the future because many models yet too narrow a range is the reality of the big three non-Mac companies. Their greed and laziness could sink them rather quickly.
Apertar F2 e F12 ajudou a acelerar o reconhecimento.
Great video. I loved it =) Just to let you know, one thing to mention about the memory upgrade is checking the limit of memory that the motherboard can use before you buy. It would be a terrible waste of money if you can't upgrade due to motherboard limitation. Keep that in mind :)
Just upgraded my Legion's SSD partially thanks to your video. Thanks. The store sent me a Western Digital SSD instead of the Samsung one I ordered, but whatever, I'm glad to have one more terabyte of space.
You sir, are a legend. Went through all the Lenovo manuals, no help there...this was great. They suck with a 512gb main drive, bumping that to a 2tb M2 and the 2.5 to a 4tb storage. That'll do...for a while. And courtesy of you, I wont bump the RAM or WIFI up now. The battery upgrade looks good, but I reckon the bulk SSD space will prove more useful...Your clip was fast, comprehensive, engaging and informative. Excellent production values there. Thank you.
I did put in a pair of 2tb ssds. No dramas. They are Samsung 970s I think. Partitioned 500gb for OS and programs, 1.5 storage and 2tb game drive. No worries, and blisteringly fast. Love it.

I know someone is going to ruin their laptop if they just watch this video without doing further research,
lol - that's like saying you need to dismantle the laptop's screen before doing any upgrade to the laptop.
@@xibeon Disconnecting the battery is ALWAYS the first thing you should do when taking apart something. @@ActualRealKayamariOfficialVEVO Yeah nothing bad happened to any laptop I've ever opened and they were quite a few. I don't even know anyone who somehow damaged any laptop by not disconnecting the battery. Im sure you don't either.

This is a beast of a casual gaming and full time dev laptop. 8-cores and 64GB of ram. You can't go wrong with that.
Yeah faster timings would have been fun, but this is all I had access to without buying expensive memory just for the video 😁
Included RAM is CL22. There is no XMP supported on Legion 5, and better RAM is only CL20. The performance difference is really small, like 1-2 fps, if exists at all. CL20 HyperX Impact RAM kit is about 150-180$, totally not worth it, IMO.

I guess those second drive ports (sata and nvme), share the bus. that's why you shouldn't connect both drives by force.

Make a video or link a source to switching the cooling kits I never heard of that.
Kudos to Lenovo for telling you properly what parts you can use and providing replacements

The 64gb RAM upgrade might not show much improvement in specific applications, but it will be useful for people managing workloads that require it, like virtual machines and docker along with other machine learning tasks. So its good that this laptop supports 64gb RAM.
