@Overlord Audiobooks 2k? I bought one for 900 EUR
Never thought of this before that the fancy GPU is a "waste of space" if the watt and cooling is not up to it. Hidden short-cuts that's part of a sales strategy. Great video and great retro watch!
Especially the cooling for gaming laptops. I have a great new gaming laptop with an I9 12900H RTX3080 2×16gb ddr5 ram that cools good. It's an MSI. And the wattage is low but the laptop works great for every game. It's an MSI GS77 stealth
And yes it was almost 3500euro and I could switch it if I wanted in 14 days but I'm very happy with it. Performamcd and cooling is excellent which is very important. High fps and good cooling.
@@Kvs-vf9nt Yes cooling is of importance to f.ex. avoid thermal throttling, and with your "beauty and the beast" combo with great cooling system no wonder you are happy even with "low" 105W max graphic power. I was a little more modest when i this summer bought my Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 6.gen with Ryzen 7 5800H and 3070 card with a total graphic power of 140W - tho the cooling system are working hard on heavy games... BUT - as a non hardcore gamer - for 1200 eur on sale i'm totally happy all in all. Tho i wouldn't mind the GS77...
@@Kvs-vf9ntImagine dropping 3500€ on a laptop. Man never learned how to spend his money. I can play all games on best settings on my 650€ Gigabyte laptop (i5-12500h and gtx 4050)

Is it back handing if he's just being honest truth just hurts sometimes and this is good for the consumer. Dave alerting us that is. This behooves Nvidia to rename their whole laptop line for clarity maybe just add an L to the front or something or a letter rating to indicate wattage range is L3080A vs L3080B. A = 120 to 135 Watts vs B = 95 to 110 Watts? Just an idea so we can buy in a more accurately informed way? Reward companies that do this vs don't?
Nvidia deserves a steel chair across the back of the head tbh.
Thank you! I've been looking to break this down. Of course Lenovo Legion just came out with the Ryzen and 3070/3080 combo, so the new cpu and managment software adds into the mix as well.
I have been looking at gaming laptops for years since I purchased my first one 3 years ago. It is interesting to see these power differences for high performing/top-of-the-line RTX GPUs per TDP performance. Much appreciated and now I have a renewed perspective on looking deeper into the individual specs of all gaming laptops components. Cheers!

That's why I never choose a setup going by CPU and GPU or wattage, but wait for company-independent testing to see on channels like these how this powerful hardware actually performs in any given laptop/assembly. I've seen old-gen GPUs and CPUs in low-wattage systems perform way better than new-gen GPUs or CPUs in high-wattage systems, simply due to the way the hardware is assembled and how well it hence manages thermal conduction and ventilation.
Thank you Dave for the helpful info. Probably why nVidia decided with the naming scheme because as I have looked into comparison videos of laptop vs desktop gpus and on average, showed little difference in performance and in other games the laptop even outperforms better.

Hey Dave! Rocking video! Thanks for discussing the topic. I believe consumers really need to know about this. I tried emailing Nvidia about the omission of Max-Q on laptop listings, which I also made a video about--but I didn't get a response. The whole idea of hiding the performance of a laptop through confusing your customers just feels so wrong to me because many consumers will discover it and be furious or alternatively be potentially duped into buying a more expensive lower TDP GPU (RTX 3080 80-90W) that will significantly under perform (on a per dollar spent and potentially in straight raw performance, hard to say yet) compared to a high wattage RTX 3080 (150W+), RTX 3070 (140W max I've seen so far) or RTX 3060 (130W max I've seen so far). I'm all for thin and light 3080 laptops pushing the limits of performance in thin and light form factors--but we really need better transparency for TDP on all reseller sites and retailers, because it can so heavily determine real world performance. Thanks for your well thought out video and standing with consumers! EDIT: For those interested, this is my video on this topic: ruclips.net/video/uZIYacgfwbc/видео.html
what did you expect a level 1 support to do about it? lmao
As a person shopping for a gaming laptop for the last couple years, performance and spec language is something I've been reading up on and feel that many others are doing the same as me, it would disrupt sales until reviews hit, because I'm certainly not going to spend considerable money and end up with a product I feel doesn't match expected performance. As people familiar with the spec language aren't going to see those usual indicators. Nvidia is more than welcome to try and juke their customer base but they really are putting a lot more onus, and power, onto their independent reviewers.
@@privatebenfallsprivat8428 he's a RUclips reviewer, they all get direct access emails to the Nvidia media team and don't have to go through the website proforma

happened with the 2000x series as well. i have a 2080mq and there's a setting that switches it from 80w to 90w in the menu. i tend to keep it at 80 w because the noise is crazy
Banger video, this'll definitely help once i upgrade my laptop's gpu (currently got a GTX 1050, it does the job for me at least)
Damn dude! Thank you very much! I've seen the difference since i'm in a kind of "hot" country (in the caribean) and getting a lot of problems with cooling my gaming laptop even if i can play sometimes with airconditionning. I've bought the first ROG wich were like 1.34 inch and after i get a CLEVO at 1.75inch with a 300W for the alimentation. They both got te get used to heat in here. But the ROG Hero II with his 0.98 inch suffer a lot of heat. It's hard to push it on performance.
I love ASUS but hard to buy a Griffin ( i love the style) or another CLEVO (kids are a budget) so no other solution than an Helios 700 that you covered well! And Thank you very much for the drawbacks on this laptop that not so many youtubers mentionned!

this is helpful af I was gonna get a 3060 laptop but didn't know that the amount of power that goes into a laptop mattered that much
I remember when gtx 1080 gaming laptops were very nice in design although they were on the heavy side in terms of weight they had a sturdiness. Nowadays the 3000 series the designs are very simple and lightweight and mostly the screen sizes are fixed to 15.5 inch screens instead of 17 inch screen size option.
Its nice to see you bring this up. I was shopping laptops at the RTX 20/30 shift and found that looking at the wattage (if a seller gives that info) was the only way to determine whether a laptop had the gpu I wanted. Many sellers have incorrect descriptions. I was also ready to preorder an MSI GE76 Raider with a full power RTX 3080, but found that while all the ads list it as having an i9 processor, the first run is only going to have a i7-10870h. I called MSI and they don't plan to run the i9 versions until Feb/March.

You're a real one for making a video about this and not making it 10 mins long.
It's still unnecessarily long and he takes forever to get to the point. Then he doesn't even realize the obvious solution is to just put the word laptop after the gpu name. There was no point to this video at all.
@@zuthula3847 Did you even watch the video? By adding the word laptop in the end of an gpu's name. It doesn't help consumers to compare the performance of the gpu in that specific laptop. Maybe obvious naming would be like: 1650 ti 90W, by adding the watts the buyer would understand the potential performance better
@@santels2345 or just scroll down to the spec sheet and compare it to the desktop version? There is no need for such convoluted nomenclature that could be replaced by something much simpler that more people would understand.

They should just bring the 3070(m) naming back. That way everyone knew that those were always the lower powered laptop cards.
there is not one level of lower power this year. and new tech like sharing power between cpu and gpu which will make even wattage labeling not working , I just recommend looking for the review.
Agreed, however that's only part of the problem. Another confusing aspect for consumers is that a 3060(m) for example can have a TDP of 80W, 90W, 115W, etc. all of which offer different levels of performance, yet there is no obligation for manufacturers to advertise this - so they rarely do.
In laptops its redundant
