    in September 2019, I purchased my surface pro 6 over an iPad pro after watching many comparison videos. the iPad pro is an iPad that can turn into the form of a laptop with the help of an attachable keyboard whereas the surface pro is actually a laptop in a form of an iPad/tablet. As laptops can do so much more than iPads, I bought a laptop and I really like it. The keyboard/typecover is larger and easier to use than an iPad keyboard and the surface pen I would say is more of a pencil and the apple pencil is more of a pen. Why? the surface pen has a button at the top of it and when you want to erase a mistake, you simply turn the surface pen around and the end rubs is out unlike the apple pencil where you have to click on the eraser to erase the mistake. Also, surface pens require batteries unlike the apple pencil, which you have to charge as well. Another good thing about the surface tablet is that you can fold the panel behind it into 'studio mode' so it's easier to write on whereas an iPad is an iPad and you made need a case to tilt it to write on. Finally, when you write with the tip of the surface pen, it's like writing with an actually pen, whereas with an apple pencil, it doesn't. Just my review from using the surface as a first-year student :) I use OneNote for my notetaking and there are a lot of reviews from iPad users who use GoodNotes and make good looking notes from it, so I would say the downside to the surface is that it doesn't have GoodNotes, not that it is bad but it would be cool if there was a windows version of GoodNotes

    I'm a heavy Apple user. The iPad is a good device at $400 dollars. However, if you're spending $1000 or more, you should NEVER buy an iPad Pro. It's simply a horrendous long term investment for the price. If your choice is between a Surface "Pro" or an iPad "Pro" for the money, get a surface. It will be far more usable for far longer into its lifecycle than the equivalent iPad manufactured at the same point in time. If I'm going to spend $1000 or more, I'm investing in a proper laptop, be it a MacBook or an equivalent Windows PC; both will receive far longer software support than will any iPad. If Apple wants consumers to see iPads as viable laptop replacements, they need to offer much better long term support. As of now, the longest any iPad has seen IOS support has been the Air 2, and it likely won't get the next version of iPad OS. Conversely, if one looks at the Surface Pro 3, which was released the same year as the Air 2, it can still run the latest version of Windows 10, This is why I cannot take such comparisons as these seriously. No one with even a slight knowledge of computers would purchase ANY iPad as a laptop replacement, especially at a cost of over $1000 in order to attempt to use it as a laptop. As I said, for that money, I'd sooner buy a MacBook; but I would also consider a Surface. Consider that when Apple stops updates on the iPad, the user is left with little choice but to upgrade. Proper laptops allow the user to run windows, Mac OS or both, with the option to at least attempt to run linux. Choosing an iPad means committing to frequent upgrades. Anyone spending Laptop money on iPad "Pro" models is getting ripped off in the long term....plain and simple.

    Hi, I have had over 3 years with a surface pro device and over 2 years with an iPad Pro device as whatever roles it could fill. Therefore, I feel like I have a little more information regarding these two devices that may not be covered in this review as it would be impractical for the reviewer to like use these devices for years.
    While the surface pro on the ‘surface’ seems like a good choice, the Surface pro is not as polished as the iPad. Let me explain:
    - When you write the screen gets hot, making your palms sweaty
    - Sometimes the fan would randomly turn on, making a loud whine. (Pretty much all windows devices do this)
    - It is super hard to do anything in the chrome browser or any other ‘desktop’ app when you are using the surface pro as a tablet
    - Sometimes, you would take the surface pro out of the bag, but the thing would be on, and it would be hot. Something must have woken it up and then nothing turned it back off so it just stayed on in your bag the whole time, wasting battery. (This is a major issue especially if you dont have your charger with you and it uses a proprietary charger)
    - It would take much much longer for the thing to turn on then an apple device. Sometimes, you would turn on the device only to find that it is unusable for 20 minutes while it updates itself. Again- it doesn’t happen often but like its enough to screw your whole day up
    - The surface pen would run out of battery or there would be connection issues - making you pull your hair out as you dont know what to do with it.
    Now all these might sound like ‘eh’ issues, but like when you compare it to an iPad where it acts predictably, all the animations are smooth and clean, it turns on instantly, etc etc it just makes it a pleasure to use. Of course an iPad will have it’s own limitations - it will never be able to fulfil the roles a full windows device is capable of doing - like making a word document and having it seamlessly sync to google drive, but again - the iPad is just a pleasure to use. It is like a sports car: it does one thing and it does it very well.
    I currently use a spectre x360 in conjunction with the iPad Pro as my main portable/uni devices. Yes the x360 can be used as a notebook but shares a lot of the issues with the surface pro, and so I only use it for more specialised tasks like making a word document, excel, solidworks etc etc. The windows devices just aren’t convenient enough to use as a replacement for my notebook. you dont want to spend the first 5 minutes of your lecture waiting on your laptop to load, update and whatever only to have the fan scream 10 minutes in and have your hand all sweaty when the iPad exists and you can get from power button press to note taking in less then 10 seconds.

    • @ShynobieX
      @ShynobieX 2 года назад +14

      In your circumstances, you had a laptop to run your bigger and more demanding tasks such a specialized application with .exe. For some of us, we do not have the luxury to purchase a secondary device for note taking purposes cause really, the ipad is literally a huge iphone or a glorified super paper note taker and that's pretty much. It doesn't replace your laptop when you need it and unless you have a desktop at home, theres no point in trying to do work on your ipad pro cause it doesn't ever replaces your computer the way like a laptop does.
      Sure the sweaty palm, heating etc is troubling but the you can always opt for typing it like a traditional laptop if you're really anal about heat issues. As for updates and what not, just turn off the auto update function and you're all set lol.
      Spending on the ipad pro together with a laptop is essential cause ipad os is not a full blown Mac or windows os. it supplements your device, not replace it. You spend more on 2 device when you can just buy portable laptop like the surface which works as it is.

      If you had all these issues with the surface i suggest you have a fault with your unit and by the sounds of it sounds like a few faults take it back and get a replacement.

    • @vlkhvan
      @vlkhvan 2 года назад +2

      @@ShynobieX what kind of luxury are you talking about? The base (core i5, 8GB, 128GB) Surface Pro 7/7+/8 cost $800+. And the keyboard is a separate cost (although there are bundled offers as well). You can buy a base iPad 9 for $300 and plenty of Windows laptops with comparable performance/quality as Surface Pro for $500-$600 (and it will come with 256GB storage in most cases, and in many other cases you can even upgrade Ram for cheap). With Surface, you pay a premium for the form-factor and "convenience" of having an all-in-one. So if you have the "luxury" to buy an over-priced Surface you'd definitely afford to buy a traditional Windows laptop + iPad, so please stop this nonsense about "I save when I buy Surface pro instead of laptop+iPad", no one buys Surface Pro to save money, this is simply ridiculous

    For anyone who wants the surface pro but thinks they are too expensive or doesn't like the back flap it has, you can try some other two in one laptops like ones from the Lenovo Yoga series, HP envy series ect. These laptops are expensive at their top configurations but you can still get good ones for 700-800 dollars.The surface pro tends to only give the bare minimum if you pay700-800. For the the other laptops you just need to buy a pen. It'll cost about $50
    a laptop I recommend is the lenovo yoga c740. It's very thin (.6in) So it shouldn't be too bulky when taking notes. You don't have to worry about not being able to use it on your lap because it can flip into some comfortable positions. Some pens that work with it are the Lenovo Active Pen 2, and the Bamboo ink smart stylus 2nd gen, and I'm sure there are others out there. I just haven't looked into them. The c740 starts at 800 but the price will go down as as the year goes on and during holiday sales.

      @@xavy5139 depends on your situation. in class I usually only use my ipad because in math classes a laptop is completely useless and in CS classes I usually only take a few notes on the slides too so I only really use my laptop when I'm coding at home or I'm meeting up with a friend to do coding homework. So for me having a better writing experience on the iPad far outweighs the positives of a surface also being a (rather crappy) laptop. Also since I'm completely paperless now and don't have to lug any binders around with me taking both my laptop and ipad with me isn't really an issue It can actually be quite nice if I want to use the whole iPad screen for writing while reading the script or watching something else on my laptop screen.

    The thing with Surface Pro and many reviewers is that they have very little time spent with the device. On paper, it seems the Surface is a more versatile option compared to the iPad. And it is true. It is a 2-in-1 at the end of the day. And provides full desktop OS functionality. But once you start to really break down the use cases, 2-in-1 into 1 and 1, it really becomes obvious that it is very over-priced for the first "1" - laptop, and provides an absolutely inferior user experience for the second "1" - tablet. And it becomes very apparent when you used the Surface for more than a few days and you also have an iPad (or had an experience with an iPad in the past). Practically anyone I know who owns both devices ended up using Surface as a laptop only and uses the iPad 100% of the time when they want a tablet. So if using Surface as a laptop only why over-pay for it? There are plenty of laptops with much better specs and battery life than Surface and for cheaper.
    The point is the Surface Pro is a subpar laptop and a subpar tablet. People can say whatever they want about how good and versatile Surface Pro is, but in reality, when the choice is provided (i.e. possibility to own both devices) people choose the iPad for tablet use and ended up using the Surface as a laptop only. The only people I know who really enjoy Surface Pro as a tablet are those who never owned a tablet before (neither iPad nor Android), so they just don't know a better tablet experience

    Can't really comment on the Surface Pro personally, but it does seem like the obvious choice if you only want to carry one device. I've used an iPad (not Pro or Air, just the cheap one that still works with the Pencil) for college note-taking in Goodnotes. It's nice. But... I can't shake the feeling that the way I'm using it, it's just a glorified piece of paper, and I'll still always reach for my laptop or phone instead except for this one specific use-case. Honestly, I way prefer typing my notes in general, to the point that I'm willing to mess around with latex in Notion like a crazy person, rather than just handwriting equations.
    That said, I think how "much of a computer" an iPad is depends a lot on your major. Computer science, software/electrical engineering... I don't think it can be your one and only device at all. The Surface Pro legitimately can. But, if you don't need to compile code or run heavy or specific software that isn't available for iOS, I think that totally changes things.

    I like the Surface Pro 7 as a laptop. The tablet mode is decent. I just wish there were better notetaking apps like how Chromebooks have Squid Notes or NoteShelf and how Apple has Notability, Goodnotes and Noteshelf. I'm not a fan of OneNote or other apps that the Surface has. Drawboard PDF is the closest thing to what I prefer except its not made for organization, just pdf annotation. So, I got the iPad Air 3 to go along with it. I will use it as my heavy notetaking device and use the Surface for EVERYTHING else plus quick and small annotation that I don't want to move to the iPad lol

    Best feature for school for either is having the surface pen or the Apple Pencil, but for school especially the surface pen is just better due to standby time and it lasting all week through school since if you started school Monday morning with a 100% charged Apple Pencil, but didn’t use it, it would be nearly dead or fully dead by Wednesday night and you’d be waiting at school for a half hour for the iPad itself to charge the pencil before you could use it again, and it would have also stolen some battery life from the iPad Pro as well,
    While the surface pen doesn’t charge at all , and so doesn’t drain battery from the surface pro yet the AAAA battery lasts basically the entire school year so it basically is like it’s always on and never needs charging, only until one day it finally dies but then just pop in another AAAA battery and you are good for another year

    • @vlkhvan
      @vlkhvan 2 года назад

      It seems you never owned an iPad Pro. You naturally store the Pen on the charging side of the iPP, so it is practically always charged. And even if you forgot it in your bag for a long time (which means you don't use handwriting often) it takes just 15 seconds (yes, seconds) of charge to give you 30 min of use. I'm sure anyone can make a 15-sec break to charge every 30 min. Again, this situation might occur only if you don't store the Pen on the iPad, which means you very rarely use the Pen in the first place.

    All late lol but I bought an iPad to use as an iPad, I'm very simplistic when it comes to notes I just don't like the aftermath of paper after a whole semester so digital note-taking is God sent. I like having a laptop as a laptop and a tablet for notes as a tablet for notes. The surface looks bomb but I just want a laptop staying as a laptop if that makes any sense lol, my current laptop is foldable and it can go into tablet mode which sounded cool at first but when I tried using it ... ABSOLUTELY NOT LOL janky laggy weird, i would rather much just have a laptop intact like a laptop. That's my preference

      I'd say base MacBook Air M1 (often on sale for $899 or even cheaper) + base iPad 9 (very often $299) is the best combo for a student. Surface Pro 8 will cost more or the same (with the keyboard) while providing much worse performance and especially battery life (which is important for a student). Surface Pro 7+ often sold for $799 with a keyboard, which is cheaper than MB Air + iPad but it is a really hard decision to pay just $100 less for a laptop that is so much inferior (MB Air M1 8GB/256GB vs Surface Pro 7+ 8GB/128GB). Surface Pro 7+ is a very bad investment compared to MB Air M1, especially for a programmer.

    Can you take notes in a word document and at the same time type in it?
    Can you write in a word document but the surface turns your handwriting into a typed text?
    Can you write on a ppt file in surface pro which is mostly presentations of the professors?
    I think if we want something to serve as a laptop (typing and running different software) and a tablet (taking notes with the pen), the surface pro would be the best choice. Wouldn't you agree? especially that most softwares we are using in university are windows-based

    I’m not a student. I was leaning toward surface pro, but with its abysmal battery and can get throttling hot, so I finally purchase iPad Pro. Not to mention surface pro isn’t meant to be used without keyboard. Where as iPad, kind of versatile. I can use iPad for long hours zooming without having to worry about the battery. And it’s more comfortable for media consumption compared to surface pro.

    • @ShynobieX
      @ShynobieX 2 года назад

      But that's about it. You're limited to a media consumption device that even the ipad or ipad mini or mi pad 5 pro is able to do. If you don't have a laptop and need one that does both, the surface pro is a no brainer. It primarily a laptop with pad features whereas the ipad pro is just a secondary device to be used for your laptop and it doesn't replace it any shape or form.

    • @iniodar7238
      @iniodar7238 2 года назад

      @@ShynobieX yes, I use my iPad for my secondary device. And as you get older, you got someone else to do the typing and technical stuff. You’re pretty much spending your time talking in zoom, so yeah, keyboard maybe not a real issue for me 😂

    • @ShynobieX
      @ShynobieX 2 года назад +2

      @@iniodar7238 yeah. If that's the case, I think the ipad pro is a little overkill for such tasks. The mini or air works perfectly fine. Think about it this way, the ipad pro has the best horse power to run anything you want because of the m1 chip but it's limited to the os as it is cause it's still an ipad os. It's like asking a an Olympic swimmer to swim in a kid sized pool. He's limited to what his surrounding is and that's what apple does its consumers. They tell you it's all that you need but you are pretty much stuck in that pool no matter how fast or good you can be to test it out

    OneNote is amazing but the writing experience on my ipad is not the best too. However, the ease of switching between typing (I use a bluetooth keyboard) and writing makes it a powerful app. Notability is a great app but mostly just for writing 😕

    • @vlkhvan

      Definitely worth it. You'll get your $600 difference back very quickly with a much better experience and higher productivity from MB Pro+iPad. And when comes time to upgrade the Surface will lose pretty much all its value while you'll be able to sell/trade-in your MB Pro and/or iPad Pro pretty well. So even from a money perspective, you cover that $600 difference easily after a few years of depreciation, and much better user experience benefits just come on top of it

I am a hobby artist and I love my 6th gen. iPad for drawing and art creation. Even in 2021 my 6th gen. iPad is still supported by Apple. I don't watch videos or browse the internet on my iPad. I only use Adobe Fresco. I have a few animation apps on my 6th gen. iPad. I have procreate app on my iPad. I paid $325. for the 6th gen. iPad and $100 for the Apple Pencil in 2018 (if I remember correctly). My 6th gen. iPad is capable of surfing the web, watching RUclips, photo editing, emailing, messaging. I have a friend that has Microsoft Surface Go. But I don't think the Surface Go is as capable as the entry level 2021 iPad 8th gen. I do like that the Microsoft Surface devices have full windows installed on them. As iPadOS is limited. I think for the price to performance ratio the 2021 8th gen. iPad is a better performer value as compared to the Microsoft Surface Go as to art creation.

It can't be a thin/small table either cause the laptop will fall backwards. It's happened to me so many times. The back panel is an absolute flop and you can't comfortably type on Surfaces whilst sitting on sofas/beds which is a struggle for a lazy college student like me. If I had a choice, I would go back in time and purchase another Macbook pro.

    When you're writing with onenote on either device, does the machine register the side of your hand on the screen as an input itself. In other words, when you write, do you have to keep your hand in the air and only touch the machine with the stylus

      no you can rest your hand on the surface as you write. You don't have to keep in the air

    Can you still use the surface not sideways but like up and down ways (like an iPad?) Idk what it’s called but you used to be able to on the original surface
