      Yeah, well that’s the $1000-$1200 question. The retort is, “given the Windowy nature and the way the OS comes to the surface on the...Surface, will this be possible?” I’m sticking with the Pencil/iPad Pro: for me*, it’s the closest thing to real drawing with all the benefits of digital.

      John Date (I’m still Cassandra this is a different account) i don’t 100% understand what you mean but i found that i liked the surface pen more. Along with the eraser it has multiple nib options and i believe the most recent one has more sensitivity to pressure though that’s one thing I have to double check. However I haven’t used the surface pro 7, i use the Surface Book 2 which is said to have better graphics and more touch points than other surface tablets so I could be speaking from a different experience

    I had a 10th gen iPad ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.

    Okay, so I've been watching your vids for over a year now, and this video has finally helped me decide my next upgrade...
    I need an Ipad pro for drawing on the go, a Surface pro for at home, but also an XP-Pen connectable tablet for screen variety, and a Wacom Studio Pro for accuracy. Throw in a huion as a 3rd monitor, if I'm being honest (can't have too many monitors, and a pen-compatible one is a huge bonus), 3 extra Apple pencils (never know when one might dissapear!!!), a gallon of coffee, several overtime shifts at work, and and a few more credit cards to go into debt with.

      Are you sure a setup with graphic tablets of 3 different brands is not going to give you driver issues? I'm a diehard Surface Pro user and I love my Surface Pro 7. I have the i7 with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. It's the machine that can do it all and it's this versatility that keeps me in the Surface Pro line. I can run ancient 20 year old software for work, I can crunch my Excel spreadsheets, I can write software in Visual Studio 2019. I can do my Adobe InDesign and Acrobat documents, I can edit photos in Lightroom and Photoshop, I can edit audio in Adobe Audition, I can do light video editing, and I can sketch in Clip Studio Paint and Adobe Illustrator. Heck, I can play VR games with it! when I bring over a SP7 with a VR headset to someone's house, it blows their mind how such a small computer can run a VR headset. I can't imagine going back to a regular laptop. Sure, lots of laptops give bigger screens and more bang for buck but none of them can do what the Surface Pro can do. I do wish that more Windows software were designed for touch. That's the greatest deficiency of Windows. Clip Studio Paint is one of the better touch apps. Photoshop has an awful touch interface.

      Andrew Young well. With that money he’s buying a decent windows laptop and a touchscreen tablet (with a OS that pathetically was never designed for the touchscreen). But i guess it’s worth it. It really all depends on the persons needs and see if the device could meet all those. Basically, I really missed some functionalities on the surface pro when I switched to an iPad Pro, but generally speaking the iPad Pro is so much more pleasant to use than the surface pro. But that’s just me. For some people who are dealing with more professional softwares, I don’t see why they would buy an iPad Pro, even it’s slightly cheaper.

    • @onlysublime
      @onlysublime 4 года назад +13

      @@andrewyoung4482 actually, that's the good thing about the Windows world. there is this concept called "sales". in addition, you can buy keyboards from more than one vendor. And I already had my keyboard from my Surface Pro 2017. Microsoft was good about maintaining compatibility throughout all the generations. Not like how they handled the Apple Pencil and Pencil 2. Also, you can buy pens from many different vendors besides Microsoft. My favorite is a $40 pen with multiple buttons. How many $40 pens are available for the iPad Pro. If you think I'm denigrating the iPad Pro, I'm not. It's all about what you need out of a machine. For many people, the iPad Pro is perfect. For my uses, it's not.

    • @andrewyoung4482

      @@onlysublime I like the part where you think I don't know anything about Windows or sales. I've never even owned an Apple product until a few days ago when I decided to pick up an iPad Pro. I've been all about Windows and Android since Windows 98 and the original Motorola Droid. And I'm not even going to bother defending Apple or any other company with their sales strategies because that's all part of capitalism world we live in. You get what you pay for. Also, you really think a cheap pen is better than the Apple Pencil? There are countless RUclips videos and reviews stating that the Apple Pencil is one of the best in the game. Again, if you want one of the best then you're going to pay a little more for it. As for your last statement I 100% agree. I chose the iPad Pro for digital art and digital note taking along with other common tasks such as Netflix and browsing the internet. I've had a few Android tablets previously that I tried and they were no where near as good as the iPad Pro with my experience with it so far. Because of this I'm even thinking about switching to an iPhone and saying goodbye to my Galaxy S10. I don't know about giving up on Windows just yet though. Either way I'm not switching to a Mac book until Apple fully integrates their ARM processors into their machines and works out the bugs.

      RIP... bad luck. I have an OK (if slightly old) laptop which works for stuff like writing and basic gaming, but I wanted to update my graphics tablet. Wacom's Cintiqs seemed overpriced, and the basic ones would require a good computer to draw on anyway, which made them lose any portability... Meanwhile the iPad and iPad pro were praised by all of my artist friends, and with a Bluetooth keyboard would work ok for taking notes during lectures. On top of that, I was able to test an iPad pro last spring for a couple of hours. Ended up ordering the 11" iPad pro last night, hopefully I won't regret it... the prices for those devices are HIGH.

      You made the right decision, Das Sir.
      As someone who loves both his laptop and iPad Pro, can confirm that the iPad Pro is not a laptop replacement. Not as of 2019, at least. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is still firmly swept up in their initial rosey-eyed honeymoon period with their shiny new iPad, and not in a position to give credible advice just yet.
      If you intend to go beyond basic 2D drawings/paintings for clients, then you'll need a laptop first. The iPad Pro comes after.
      Getting an iPad Pro as your sole art device is like forgoing a monitor for a VR headset for your gaming rig: you will quickly regret putting the cart before the horse.

    • @kiren3168
      @kiren3168 4 года назад +4

      @@HipposHateWater yup I guess so!! I can't really give up my laptop. As far as I know notation and music software on the iPad still needs to catch up. I usually work on really small projects (8.5 square children's book illustrations) with 300 dpi so an IPad could be perfect. It feels so natural and it's portable which is something I always look for. I just hate apple's ecosystem (hostage system) and I despise their prices. The iPad hands down is the best digital drawing experience that you can get but like you said it is a companion device not a replacement. I just wish the ipad wasn't an apple product. Hopefully I'll save up and get the 12.9 or the 11 if the 12.9 was too big (gosh I wish there was an 11.9 one). It doesn't look like they are releasing another pro any time soon.

    I can't see an ipad ever becoming a laptop / desktop replacement unless it can run the same desktop apps. If it has to have it's own apps, then it will always remain a secondary device. Now yes, some will find or make a way for it to work, but for the majority, it' a showstopper.

    • @jbravo300
      @jbravo300 4 года назад +8

      ipad isn't supposed to be a desktop/laptop replacement. I also wouldn't say its a secondary device. Its a complementary device within the apple lineup. Macbooks are good for heavier tasks and ipad is good for tablet based tasks. I had a surface pro as an all in one solution; the problem with this is that it sucks in ways that pure tablets or laptops wouldn't. For example, I hated the fold out stand since its not stable, and prefer laptops that are held in place by a hinge. similarly, the os isn't as friendly to touch gestures as the ipad, in my opinion.

      Apple is pushing the iPad Pro to be more of a laptop replacement. It does work for some people and will continue to improve over the years. for those of you jumping between apple and microsoft I'd say one thing: Avoid Brand Loyalty.
    Every brand puts their unique twist on the product and every artist takes something from their product in their own way. So its best to look at the specs, see the reviews and ask yourself "is that going to help me do what i do best.. even better?"
    Eg I moved from wacom intuos to a chuwi hi13, then to xp-pen artist 12 (which i love) and now im looking into a huion kamvas pro.. simple reasons for so many brand shifts? because who made it didnt matter to me - what i could do on it did, and with the exception of Chuwi (sorry chuwi, but unless you exclusively use clip studio, and always need to jumpstart bios to boot, your tablets suck) everything helped me elevate my artwork :).
    I am considering a possible apple changeover in the future, but at this point, I feel its better suited to illsutrators than matte painters and animators like myself.
    Anyways thats my 2 cents, take it or leave it as u wish ^_^

    I've used a Surface Pro for over 5 years, since the first Surface Pro. One thing about the surface line is that yes, it does run any program, BUT, I found myself more frustrated in using those programs because they are not optimized for a surface pro. I first bought it to do professional storyboards on the go, but I never really enjoyed it, I was always aware that I was drawing on a device and the pen is something you have to learn to live with. Well, about 2 months ago, I finally got an iPad Pro 12.9 and the difference is literally Night and Day! the first thing I did was buy Procreate, i can draw for hours and completely forget that I'm using a device, it feels so natural, no lag, and the best part is that all the apps are optimized for the iPad. I enjoy using Procreate, Affinity Photo and Designer (tho there are a few things that frustrate me within those apps) and I can create professional level work without the frustration. Lastly, I also own a Wacom Citiq 13HD and a Wacom Cintiq 22HD, both of which have been replaced by the iPad. Yeah, that's how much i love it.

However after trying the Pencil several times and watching your reviews along with the fact my local Wal*Mart had the newest iPad for only $249 on Black Friday I decided to go for the cheaper option and get an iPad to be my first screen tablet. It’s worked great so far. As a matter of fact I’m typing this on it right now using a Bluetooth Keyboard that I bought for under 20 bucks. Can't recommend the iPad enough. Had way too many problems with graphics tablet drivers on my windows PC and I just gave up after my 3rd tablet stopped registering pressure. Apple made it so much easier for me to do my digital drawings lmao. Procreate is a joy to use and a far better experience in terms of drawing than Photoshop in my opinion. My desktop computer has 12GB of RAM a decent GPU and a good CPU and with every year of Creative Cloud updates the performance gets worse and worse. The last suite of creative cloud apps that worked well on my computer was 2017, 2018+ has been a laggy, stuttery mess.
    I'm using procreate and affinity designer on my 9.7 inch iPad pro from years ago and it never once gave me performance issues. My only complaint with my ipad though is the fact that the amount of layers I can have on procreate is limited.

    • @KuttyJoe
      @KuttyJoe 4 года назад

      That's an interesting experience. I've had Wacom devices and Cintiqs for a very long time. Like you, there were always driver issues until very recently. Maybe less than a year where I haven't had any problems. But, those problems were never enough to make me give up. I think, the Cintiqs and Intuos tablets are built like tanks. I have a Intuos GD from the early 2000's. Wacom continued to supply drives for it, forever. It was still working a couple years ago and I haven't tried it lately. It has never failed. So, that was impressive.
      With regard to performance getting worse and worse every year with Adobe, that's been my experience also forever. But again, the latest releases from Adobe actually got better and better! That was a huge surprise for me. At least on my Windows PC. Not on my Mac. Nowadays, I have the very latest CC apps, and Photoshop and Illustrator are running fine. Other apps are not so fine. That's on a PC that I bought in 2011. I also just bought a brand new PC so of course performance on that machine is spectacular. Well, you're never going to get the same brush performance that we see with Procreate, but then, the other iOS apps also don't have the same brush performance as Procreate. Procreate is special.
      Affinity Designer was/is a laggy, stuttery mess on my two iPad Pro. Unusable. It freezes completely. Eventually, my iPad Pro 13" became problematic as well. Battery life became poor very quickly. And when I try to enter my password to log in, it freezes constantly. I have to tap a number, again, and again, and again. Hit the power button, start over and eventually it will respond.
      I think the iPad Pro is a wonderful device for art on the go but not for serious productivity. It's not made for that.

    I’m watching this on my iPad Pro but would prefer to watch RUclips on my Surface Pro 6. RUclips doesn’t allow going to the home screen and opening other apps and multitasking like the Surface does. Unless you have RUclips Red or you do the split screen feature but this requires RUclips to still be active on screen on the iPad Pro. This limits the iPad a great deal. Sometimes I like listening to music when having a RUclips video playing if the person is just talking, which you can’t do on the iPad. I will say the battery life on the Surface is pretty bad at least on the Surface 6. Hopefully they’ve improved it on the 7.

    For school nothing beats the surface pro. I have the new iPad Pro as well but writing notes is just way better on the SP. Good notes and notability are incredible apps, but the iPad lacks the ability a laptop has. I love OneNote for class. I was premed and printing lecture slides into OneNote, writing on screen, and recording lecture audio works incredibly well. Microsoft has had the technology to recognize your handwriting within your notes for almost five years now. The ink to math and other features have been there for years in OneNote. Nothing beats the feedback of the surface pen and the eraser. I wish Apple made the pencil like the surface pen where you can switch out heads and get the push feedback. The eraser is the greatest thing as well. You can click it to open up onenote and automatically open up a note, hold for cortana, or double click to take a screenshot. You can program the click, hold, and double tap to accomplish almost anything (opening a specific app, etc.) I’ve used my surface pen on a average of 5 hours a day for three years and the battery is still at 71%. Not having to charge a writing tool is a much better approach to technology that is used naturally. If I ever needed to replace the battery, it is super easy as it’s a AAAA battery that I can buy anywhere. I have ALWAYS been a die hard Apple fan boy since I was a kid in the early 2000s all the way through high school. The fact that Apple has not innovated their Mac products since Steve Jobs has passed away is extremely upsetting. They have made loads of progress with the iPad Pro, watch, and Apple TV, however, my 2011 MacBook Air is capable of completing nearly every single task (except sidecar with the new update) that the new macs are capable of accomplishing. There’s nothing great about the new macs. If only Apple combined the iPad Pro and Mac into a device similar to the surface pro 🤔🤫. Thank you for listening to my TED Talk.

    I really have a love hate relationship with surfaces honestly. I’ve had one for just over two years (sorta). I loved my surface and spent hours making drawings and animations, (before this I had only had a tiny none display Wacom tablet). And everything worked great, until it didn’t. Essentially the digitizer in the screen went, so no touch response at all. This was a god awful mess because I was using it as a drawing tablet, so without touch it was useless to me. And I needed it to finish portfolios for art school. To make a long story short I ended up getting a replace from Microsoft that then suffered the same problems only 2 weeks later. It was frustrating because all I wanted to do was draw. Eventually I received a working computer, but at this point I’m just waiting for it to break again.
    My opinion on a surface is that if you’re serious about art, get a good desk top and save up for a good display tablet. It’ll be more reliable than a surface and have far more ram (which is essential to good animation programs).

    I picked surface 7 on black friday because 1. you can run much more powerful apps like photoshop whereas the ipad obviously can't 2. the surface also works well for me because I enjoy some light video games like diablo 3. So if you are a creator but also want some of your desktop's abilities like video games, not just mobile apps, the surface pro 7 can run a lot of games, especially if you are willing to upgrade to 16gb ram and the dedicated graphics card. 3. the deals I could find just made the surface 7 cheaper
    As a side note, I don't have any lag on my surface 7, and several apps like autodesk (free) and leonardo ($40) that run amazingly on the surface 7 have both digital rulers and even stabilizers SAI style.

    I have a SP4 and looks like that pen jitter issue never got fixed, which is part of the reason I'm watching this video. It's a shame most of the creative community seems to favor Apple by default (hence more options for brushes and templates via Procreate). I love my Surface but the number of times I have to redo lines on my artwork is frustrating. Apple Pencil looks to not have many issues and better pressure sensitivity, although like you said, a lot of Windows apps don't take advantage of it. If I don't lose my job over this COVID-19 craziness, I will be looking into an iPad Pro this year.

    • @daisies667

    A quick question about drawing in surface pro ...when I draw for a while on my surface pro I feel like the device get heated up .. also it heats up when charging it and using any program with it in the same time ... so is this normal ? or does my device have an issue?

  • @DeepakBhakoo

    I agree with you. A laptop is still better for doing all work-related stuff like creating websites using WordPress, typing letters etc in pages/word and more things. It is just so frustrating to work on an iPad for any really productive work. If they make an iPad Pro with a keyboard cover with trackpad then also i think it will be much better, obviously with more iPad OS refinements.
