This is one of the big reasons I like scrap mechanic, where in other games resource gathering is just break resource -> raw resource, in scrap mechanic, resource gathering is not just a task, but an engineering problem ; there are many ways to go about doing such a simple task, and while some ways are obviously more efficient than others, no one method is THE most efficient method.
Leave the speed on the pistons low, but turn the length up to 5 or 6 so the pistons won't be able to lift the harvester even though they are always on the ground.
THANK YOU KAN! So many other content creators have been relying on Metal 3 as "weight" and I've been sending my hand through my face further and further pointing out that Concrete is the heavier material even though it has more friction. It has a little less durability, but that's the trifecta of the 3 mats; concrete is heaviest, wood is lightest, metal is the most durable. BUT EVERY CREATOR IS USING METAL AS WEIGHTS AND THEY USE TOO MUCH OF IT!!!! Sorry. I'm just overwhelmed that a creator recognizes the in game stats for what they are. But thank you again, Kan. Great video, I've got a dumbed down version of something like this (no moving arms or limbs.) It works great to get through rock piles, it just needs a guaranteed way to remove the final resources out of the way. Also, once a refinery bot is taking resources from 1 collector, it won't take resources from any other source save you shoving it in manually until that designated collector is either removed or emptied. That being said, it might be better to have something like 3 refinery bots per collector (overkill yes, but it'll keep the process moving).
I think raising the drill mechanism/assembly up higher and angling the drills downward would help break up the small rock bits on the ground and also allow you to contour them more.
kAN: in this episode, we are going to build a better drill machine Next episode, kAN: we are are going to build a new mining machine Next episode, kAN: we are going to build a new drill machine today...
Maybe add two more pistons to hold everything in the front with a short width so you can press a button for switching to lower ground sweeping. For battery-making, ScrapMan made a sweet glowbot feeding mechanism.
Make the drills bearing/controller driven. Works so much better than any engine powered drill. Rocks don’t fly all over the place. My miner has bearings to tip all the drills 65 degrees in the front toward the ground on a push of a button. Nice build - you are crazy fast when you build, very skilled! Thanks for great content.
Kan, if you want to have a super low sweeper mode, you can put the whole front assembly on a bearing or one extra piston extender thing set to one length. That way, you would have a super low sweeper mode and all of the fingers would be able to contour to the ground without causing much lag.
1. Move driver seat to a side 2. mount a 360 rotation turret on top of a couple of extendable pistons. And you have yourself a co-op "COMBAT" harvester.
@@ermimprettysigmaphonk never said there was anything special to them, it just takes a bit to find the right distances between the joints to get the right angles.
i built a pretty awesome design, the front of my miner is like a vice. 2 pistons spread apart the arms and on the inside of the arms is a 2x2 of drill heads on each side. i drive up to a mound, open the vice, wrap around the pile and close it. it clears a pile in no time at all
Don't forget the lowboy trailer for trucking this bad boy around. also a controller and bearing to lower the "header" (in this case the drill bits) would help instead of turning up the pistons.
I was ready for another "cool but not totally functional" machine but I'm blown away by how well that worked for a initial design. The fact that you need to consider a second refinery just to keep up is a sign this is a game changer
Bearings work better. I use 4 arms with a drill on each end. And 2 drills on the bottom of each arm. You put the arms on bearings and adjust the arm to go to 90 degrees to straight out. No pistons needed and works better. The only thing I have not done is use suspension on the top drills. I don't use them to prevent lag. But, it looks like I will try it. Anyrate. Great video. Glad you got a good miner! And I appreciate that you made the trailer and small scooper set up. It was very cool to see. I know it did not work out. But the fact you did it is awesome.
I was gonna say this too but they actually spin the drills with more power (not faster) and they spin the drills at the speed that its like the rocks are butter. And you won't use any type of fuel to drill.
thank you for the toilet seat trick. Was able to fix a problem i didnt even know was there. No need to get into huge detail, but it worked like a charm. Extremely useful.
If you were to make a Tank Steering system, with the small wheels, and mount them on sport/short suspension, you could eliminate the problem of getting high-centered on the bumps those rocks sit on. I do love the combine's terrain hugging feature. A "Splash guard" is a great idea too. If you could figure out a way to make a bulldozer spade that ushers the rocks into the drills as well, it'd be crazy. Though, I'm not sure how the heck that would work, with how the drill-armatures move.
I have ran combines my whole life so just an idea on the sides of the combines their is a panel that lifts out that reveals the gears so why not make that into extra storage
For even more efficient mining you can add another refinery, but 2 containers-1 refinery is best ratio, because you refine while you drive from node to node, so 2 refineries, 4 collectors is perfect for this car (it looks to me). You can make car wider than miners. And you could put 2 more collectors on mining arms at sides, just put 1 or 2 blocks higher on side arms, so it don't interfere with other arms when side arms are lower than middle arms, and put collectors wide enough so they goes side of 2 middle collectors when arms fold up, in that way you get additional benefit of collecting more in front of action...and both refineries can take from 2 middle collectors while side collectors are down with mining arms. And put 3 chest at back, so you can go for long mining sessions.
Why not put adjustable suspension on the truck? If you do you should have the front and back on separate buttons to extend just in case you need to “aim”
Backboards behind the drills to keep the rocks from jumping onto the back of the pistons. Reduce power/speed of pistons so they sag just a little more and may get those buried rocks w/o needing to adjust them.
You should put the back 2 wheels on pistons because the rocks are on a mound and the vehicle struggles to climb up it, but you can just push the back up. If that makes sense. Oh and double wheels.
Multiplayer Monday Idea: Human cannon Competition Build cannon that can lounch your character at targets to land on Launch yourself into the air and try to hit tnt with your hammer mid air
you could try to increase the piston range to like 10 and adjust the "strength" by tuning the speed so if they hit the ground they wont lift up your vehicle anymore. Then even going over the top of the hill should be no problem
Ten would just simply break it. The piston would try to extend a length it isn't capable of. Also, he set the speed to high to increase the power. So that is doesn't bounce off of the terrain as much.
@@kintrix007 yes 10 was exeggerated I would increase the range such that they point towards the ground if no force is applied. It's just an idea to consider, maybe the car needs to be really heavy for it to work so the drills dont bounce off the terrain however I never had problems with that.
I like scrapmechanic your imagination is free to roam even knowing that I have the old version still by any challenge you are able to be as creative as possible there is no limit.
I think you could do a similar thing with saws... just mount the saw blades on top of the fingers. (so they angle downwards towards the ground) The saws will aim directly at the stumps to chop down the trees, then you drive the blades under the logs, and the sides of the saw blades will chop the logs into pieces. You could probably even use that exact vehicle... you'd just have to swap it between saw blades or drills.
You could probably put the drill activation and the drill piston extension on the same switch. Also, you could put your back wheels on a short piston to dip your drills down for sweeping.
I've seen a video of a miner that's basically the reverse of this. It reaches over the back of the rocks and pulls the drills towards itself, breaking the rocks and dragging all the rubble with it.
Biggest issue I have when it comes to mining vehicles specifically is the fact so many of the stone outcroppings are on raised slopes & the grass traction/friction level seems to be set to "go cart on ice". Huge vehicle made of almost entirely concrete and it still sides down an almost non-existent slope.
I wish there were blueprints in survival so then for Multiplayer Monday there could be a mining vehicle race, LOL. Everybody brings their mining vehicles from their survival worlds.
If you still want to make something with a bit more "realism", you can try using the harvester part as an attachment for the front of your truck that you just weld on when you want it, and have the collector/refiner parts on a trailer or something. I just have a bar with 5 drills on it on the front of my vehicle and I can angle it 30 degrees up and 30 degrees down. It works great and will not lag your game. I have 3 extra bearings underneath and they are all connected to an electric motor. They are on button 1 and 2, so they work with the mouse buttons. I can pull the 5 drills off and put 3 saw blades on without having to connect motors or controllers and cut wood instead. I do like the idea of shocks on the drills though. I might try that. I would have sunk the resource collectors and refinery into the base of the vehicle as they are so heavy and it will lover you center of gravity a bit.
you should put a diagonal section that forms a triangle that leads up towards the drills on each individual finger so that the blocks that get flung up hit it and tumble back towards the drills
Nice build I use something similar. One piece of advice make it as light as possible. At the rate you can harvest you will run out of the easy formations on flat ground real quick. Trying to get traction on a slight slope with 2 resource collectors and refinery is bad enough you won't want to carry all that cement go T3 wood you will thank me.
You can simulate number logic by putting a controller loop and using a rising monostable (pulse at the start of input) from a button to power it to “toggle” what the piston is at.
Hey kan make a mobile base like an rv or something that has everything you need a bed storage and food/fridge it might make going it and gathering resources for a while easier so you don’t have to come back to your base every time you run out of food or spuds
Make a rail turret but pointed down, and have it move from one side of the wall to the other and stop if it detects something under it. Then, it waits a few seconds and starts firing until it doesn’t detect anymore. Simple auto turret mounted on the wall.
If you want to make it look like a combine make it have like 80 degrees of rotation for steering and only have rear wheel steering Also pain it john Deere green it will go quite well with all of your builds Also make a flat bed for the combine to go on
A gas engine will definitely work for this, I have made much larger vehicles with a lvl 5 gas and they moved just fine. I had a similar size miner (but much less efficient) that used gas.
Maybe, when you have a second row of drill bits on top of the 1st row, then there wouldn't be as much degree floating around, like the tiny rocks that fly over them (excuse for my englisch)
The thing is, 99% of combines use back steering only because of how large the front wheels are (they support most of the weight) and have almost 0 room for any kind of turning, but it's still an awesome creation ngl
You should try to give it more ground clearance because it'll let you get iver the hill easier and you cac set the pistons to 5 which will be aimed more into the ground.
I would recommend checking out W4stedspace for a vanilla large wheel design (it uses 8 small wheels 3 bearings and pipes) as well as a suspension system (the larger wheels need it to prevent glitches) the large wheels will make your build look more like a combine if added to the front and it will help you get over the terrain around the rocks.
Hey Kan, if you want to paint the machine do it in big patches because it'll only cost one paint bottle. And it you want to make the machine a crop haverster you should turn the drills sideways.(I know you'll have to make new fingers, but it'll pay off. Also make two drills turn on each other. Like this 🎧🎧🎧. Each thing that goes on your ears are the drills). Bye Kan, hope you like my idea
I think maybe raise up the drill fingers... dringers if you will... a bit, and raise the ground clearance on the whole vehicle. It'll let you put your drills at a more aggressive angle if you need to, but also it's better for avoiding bottoming out... and looking more like a combine. You know it's a good design when you can double your processing. If you're getting enough resources I think it's time to build a bigger, better, badder base don't you? I'm thinking a nice warehouse/garage on wood support columns over the water. You can't just leave all those precious vehicles outside all the time. The paint job will get ruined from the weather and bird crap!
Kan your rock harvester might work butter as a tree harvester also you should make it were when you are harvesting make the bottom higher off the ground and put like two drills underneath so you just drive over the loose rocks
I'd look at what Scrapman did, all of his parking is over the water, but out of reach of the green bots, and it looks cool, but it would need editing to fit to your base
I've watched the entire series from day 1 and I have a solution to the trailer theme. The Semi with trailers would fit perfectly into a theme with farm style vehicles. The Combine is a great start!

Kan should make tractors and a huge farm with all the soil he could find with implements and a combine
I'd look at what Scrapman did, all of his parking is over the water, but out of reach of the green bots, and it looks cool, but it would need editing to fit to your base
You should put two refinery stations on it.
Combine Harvester! that can mine with drills and cut wood with saws.
I've watched the entire series from day 1 and I have a solution to the trailer theme. The Semi with trailers would fit perfectly into a theme with farm style vehicles. The Combine is a great start!
That flying woc: It must've been the aliens kidnapping it with their flying saucer beam.
Make a giant bowl with drills underground. Then raise it up at a rock formation
