My goal, as a debut author, is to self-publish this New Year's Eve actually. My goal was to publish by the end of the year, but I heard December is the worst month for authors to self-publish, as the market is super competitive at this time, so I decided to wait till New Year's Eve, so, technically, I am still reaching my goal for this year, whilst simultaneously publishing in January, which is a better month, if not the best month, for self-publishing. I can't wait for you to release the first book in your series! I love the plans you have. Doing a reader box sounds so fun! 📖📚📓

Lol girl I feel you on wanting to spend a bunch of money for everything to look the way you dreamed. I feel the same. I would love for my books to have art to go with it. Would love audio versions too, full cast for some, because I love full cast audiobooks. I want a website with extended chapters, deleted scenes, epilogues, etc. Love hearing about your goals!

I love this! I also self-published and I had a lot of friends and family ask about traditional publishing and it was never something I was interested in! Thanks for normalizing what works for you!
I'd recommend booking your editor now. Indie editors book up so fast and mine is already booked well into 2025. Like....through to July.
You can work on book two while book one is with your editor. That's what I did and it worked out a bit 😂. Now that book 1 is two weeks from release I'm trying to finish draft 2.

I’m excited for your publishing journey. I’m a self published author too. I just published my 1st week last month and now working on my 2nd book. Hopefully I can finish it before end of August…
I understand how or why you needed 6 month’s preparation. But as you publish more, you will make books faster…

@@briellewrites the problem is not having the tools or finances to do a lot of it. I would LOVE to do stickers, but every video I’ve seen has people making them on an iPad and I don’t have one (or the program they use)

Ohhh, right now my dream when it comes to writing is just to have a steady enough mood for long enough to actually finish writing a book, haha. I have bipolar disorder, and the list of books I’ve started to write and then abandoned because of depression is looo-ooo-oooooong. 😅
I don’t dream about money, really. It’s not an important motivator for me-if it was, I would have stuck with studying AI engineering instead of switching to studying social services. The switch basically cut my expected pay into half, but I like to follow my passion, not euros.
Besides my bipolar disorder, my other hurdle in my writing career is the amount of ideas that I would like to write. Right now, I have six workable ideas one of them a re-imagined Dracula (set in northern Finland), one a post-war high fantasy story that has a lot to do with being a refugee, cultural clashes, and building a lasting peace after a war, one is about an inter-dimensional cultural anthropologist (a critique on hardcore cultural relativism), one is about a young boy who accidentally becomes god, one is about a vampire who cannot give up on lost love, and one is a collection of pseudo-scientific essays. I should probably choose one to work on.📚

that's where i'm at too. i wouldn't mind indie publishing my poetry collection or short stories, but i'd rather trad publish because i have no "business" bone in my body

my publishing goals are essentially the same! self-publish, make some amount of income but still keep writing a passion project. my dreams are to have a custom map inside, a beautifully designed cover that has some sort of.. reflective bits? Like how gold foil is! and to be good at marketing myself without getting sucked into the depths of social media lol

An odd little question occurred to me: if your own books are successful, would you ever collaborate with author friends to release their work under your publishing label? With this channel you've been demonstrating a charisma that would lend itself well in particular to the marketing side of books. Collectives have also had a increasing appeal to me from a number of precedents.
-- In literature I'm thinking of people like Charles Dickens and William Thackeray, who founded their own magazines after they gained fame. Monthly-periodical labels like Cornhill (edited by Thackeray) and Household Words (edited by Dickens) would publish chapters of others' books in their social circle.
-- In film I'm thinking of BBS, which didn't last very long but had a huge artistic impact on counterculture. It started as "managers" for a TV-sitcom band called the Monkees, but those managers (Bob Rafelson, Bert Schneider, Steve Blauner & Jack Nicholson) wanted to expand to other areas and give opportunities to unique voices the Hollywood studios were ignoring. That's how we ended up with "Easy Rider", "The Last Picture Show" and "Hearts and Minds".
This is just a little something you can mull over on the side as your process continues. :)

As a marketing professional looking to selfpub on almost an identical timeline... Yeah! You got it. Only major change is that I'm going to be releasing a series of free short stories over the next year (with audio books, for maybe all, cost allowing) building awareness and email list. In terms of the rest though.. 100%, this is almost exactly what I'm planning on doing. I'd maybe look at Sept/early Feb in terms of the stagger. Sept is the most popular month for book releases (statistically) and it gives time for it to be out for a few months full price, and it not be weird to do a holiday sale.
