  • After returning the Polk Omni S2 I am very happy with my Sonos Play 1 purchase. It integrates with my home automation controller (Vera) and I can turn on when I unlock the door, group speakers based on motion and say the weather when I get up in the morning.

Awesome! Been running sonos in my apartment a few months, love it. Getting into home automation now and buying a vera plus tomorrow, gonna be fun to integrate sonos into it!!

Hello pete, smashing videos. I am contemplating between Sonos and the Playfi for our new home. Would you recommend the Sonos over the Polk? I like that with Sonos you are able to assign the playbar with 2 play 1 speakers for 5.1. That is correct right?

Sarvi Aesign For my house I definitely like the Sonos better. The Polk speakers required something to be on in order to stream music to them. Sonos you can turn on and walk away. This is nice for a number of reasons: 1. It doesn't drain your phone's battery. 2. I can start playing music any anyone in the house can change the song, volume etc without having to use my phone. 3. If I walk out of wifi range and the music will still keep playing.
I also really like that they are already integrated with Vera (my home automation controller) so all I had to do was set up and app and I can turn them on or off automatically based on when things happen in my house (unlocking a door, triggering motion in a room etc.).
Yes, I've read you can do a 5.1 setup but I personally haven't ever tried it.
Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll do my best to answer.
      Pete

    Hey Mate,
    great video... :)
i m considering home automation for my home in Germany here, have a few questions, thought maybe u could help:
    1. considering Vera or smarthings , firstly will this work in germany with amps and power sockets ? if so which one would u recommend for android .. what i want is
    a. smthng that works with phillips hue kit (would u recommend it ?) sonos or samsung m series for multiroom sound (any recommendation) . i m switching to android and my partner has iphone... which brings me another question:
    2. how can i turn off lights or create a scene when i have left the house but partner is home?
    3. can i control my projector, ps3, roku with this , where i can set a scene for roku to ask me (when turned on ) , what i would like to watch ?
    4. will nfc help ?
    5. have insulated lights in the wall for celing lights, to get dimmers etc will i need to get an electrician ?
    6. i have a heater here with warth controlling knob (1-5) and not sure where its connected, how can i use thermostat etc to control this?
for now i think i have enof questions and hope i aint being too ambitious with my ideas, its just from all videos i looked up. hopefully u can help.

I have never used SmartThings so I don't know what the possibilities are with it. Last I checked it had a monthly fee and also did most of it's controlling in the cloud. These were the main reasons I stayed away from it. When you use the cloud things will be slower and won't work when your internet is down.
Vera is cheap but the support isn't as good (since you're not paying for it). It currently only has one radio (z-wave) but rumor is that there is another hub coming out soon that will have more.
      1. Vera should work in Germany. I believe there are users on the micasaverde forum from Germany
      a. I don't use HUE. Too expensive for me but seems nice. I use Sonos and can automate it with Vera
      2. Most likely yes but you will need to figure out how you will detect that you've left. Arm the alarm? GPS on your phone?
3 Not sure, I don't have any of those devices
      4. It can. I have used it with tasker to start a "go to bed" scene. I don't use it any more really because I have enough sensor to automate what I want to do (when I turn off TV then start go to bed scene).
      5. Not sure. I never got one but I am comfortable working with high voltage.
      6. Hmm. This one would probably be pretty difficult but I wouldn't know without looking at it. Does it have any wireless control? If so, you may be able to "Sniff" the signals and emulate the remote using MySensor.org (if you go with Vera)
Hopefully that helps. Keep in mind when you are in the "hobbyist" market things will not always work 100% of the time. It also takes quite a bit of work to learn everything. I personally think this is a fun hobby and I am ok if something doesn't work 100% of the time. If you want 100% you will need to spend many thousands of dollars ($30,000+) so this is a good compromise for me.

+Pete B thanks for the response Pete. I m just gonna start buying some products Sonos , vera edge hub , not sure where else to start buyjnh , but would I need z-wave wall switch or socket to plug Sonos in ? or Sonos n very work just with 3rd party app ...

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  8 лет назад

DJ Hesh Sonos will work with a third party app. I made a video on how I integrate it. I will warn you though, the Sonos wasn't the most intuitive to control. You may want to start off with something smaller (controlling a light or something). Also, I recommend using PLEG (I also made some videos for this). It's a little confusing at the beginning but incredibly powerful.
Lastly, if you're not in a hurry you may want to wait for the VeraPlus. It's supposed to be coming out some time in December and it has more power and radios.

Thanks Pete, i m bout to buy phillips hue bulbs. Would i need the bulb to be connected to z-wave swtich? also does vera work with third party universal remote apps "sure"... as i have a clutter of remotes , i need to get rid off too :)

Are there limitations to what will start to play?
....like only what is currently in your playlist or something..
I already own sonos and thinking of buying a Vera Edge
I would like to have PIR sensors outside that:
When PIR sensors are activated to the side or rear of my house (private location)
Vera Edge would trigger specific things, depending on location & time of day:
Lights would go on inside (depending on the time of day)
And sonos would start a playlist with barking dog sounds,
Or recordings of people talking or shouting for the dog to be quiet.
Optionally, only start the playlist on some locations(based on what PIR sensor is triggered)
Example: if the rear garage door is opened, I would like to play this in all the house, except in the room next to the garage.
(as it would break the illusion of it being real activity in the home)
(Of course, if someone would go from garage to the actual house I set off an actual alarm VS "playing with sonos")
    .....
Do you think this would be possible?
Or would it only be able to trigger the album or radio station that is in in the playlist at that time.
    Thanks for any help!!

mysteryliner That is a cool idea! I may steal it and use it at my house :) I haven't tested playing individual files but I just took a look at the settings and based on what I see I'm almost positive you can do it. Everything you mentioned sounds doable. It will most likely take some LUA coding but there are lots of helpful examples and people on the Vera forums if you need assistance. Thanks for the comment!

+Pete B would you be able to point me towards learning how to work with Vera system?
And the sonos app in Vera?
Because it's a bit much for me to get it off the ground. I have various sensors that aren't functioning correctly, siren keeps disappearing, etc....
I bought a Vera edge last week, and there is nothing online regarding manuals or wiki (that I found)
And the Vera forum seems to be pretty dead.
      Any info is much appreciated

mysteryliner Unfortunately it can a lot of trial and error when you are first starting. I am working to make how to videos to help but it's slow going with work and family. I learned most of what I did by reading the forums. I'm not on as frequently as I would like but I have always found users willing to help when I had a question. Sorry to be vague and not super helpful but I think the forums are probably the best place to get help.

Ray Farmer Thanks. I think I'm going to try to work on the Sonos video next. I just need to finish up a short voice control video then I can work on Sonos.
What do you mean in terms of stability? Vera restarting?

    • @RayFarmer
      @RayFarmer 9 лет назад

Pete B the PLEG interface was working great, but now it won't seem to communicate with my system, whether it be a simple light switch or my sonos. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the PLEG apps multiple times. I'm currently reading the forums to try to troubleshoot

Ray Farmer Is the device is set to Arm? If it's set to Bypass, none of the conditions will work.

Elliott Ban Yes, it can. I think it can even be done without any automation program. If I remember correctly that is part of the Sonos app.

Yes, alarm is integrated into the Sonos app, so you can set it in the app (on your smartphone, tablet, PC, MAC, etc.).
