Music finds me I really don’t know how to explain it. I just discover it and embrace it.
woah brother
bro technically all music you find, finds you in the first place
It's called Spotify Algorithm collecting data ^^
Found you
@@martindubner4200how do you know it’s Spotify, RUclips music, or Apple Music
honestly i feel like the process of listening to music/discovering music isn't talked about enough, so i really appreciated this!! walks and drives tend to be the most convenient way for me to check out albums i've wanted to try
fancy seeing you here :D i see you in every single soundcloud comment section lol

Real
this reminds of the time when someone on a review website called AlbumOfTheYear told me I got into Hip-Hop the wrong way and then tried to tell me the proper order to get into hip-hop and said to return to certain albums i didn't like afterwards.
I just responded to them with "I apologize I read the instruction booklet the wrong way"
Paruko da goat no cap as usual
I never got that mentality of gatekeeping how someone first encounters something, everyone enters communities at different points. It shouldn't matter if someone gets into hiphop via Grandmaster Flash or Lil Baby, as long as we all can share a common interest (hiphop) it shouldn't matter how you got into it.
no cap for real, greetings Paruko
wow you really told him!
damn, really hit you with the "ned's declassified hip-hop survival guide" sorry 'bout it
I can relate with what you said about having a show recommended to you, but you never go and see it. For me, it's more because I don't have any kind of streaming service and don't want to go the "yar har" way, but it's kinda hard being the guy who's always missing out
The sea is calling you
Boo hoo
then get a job and pay for a streaming service. if you dont want to pirate and dont want to pay, then you shouldn't bother complaining. piracy is easy and safe
just pirate shit, its so easy
@@realLaffy I want to pay, and I'm gonna do a test to get a job. The thing is that I'm 16, which makes me uncertain about getting it, live in Brazil, so having money left for that isn't a guarantee, and my intention wasn't complain, just talk a bit about me. The reason I don't want to pirate is because I prefer taking the less risky way.
Listening to albums as opposed to just songs has completely changed how I discover new, good music. When I'm out of stuff I specifically want to listen to, I just type in a random word on Spotify, click albums and pick from there. That made me discover Mezzanine by Massive Attack which is now one of my favourite albums of all time.
Listening to full albums is something I never left and when I have listened to music with other people,I'm surprised by how many deep cuts people don't know, even on mainstream, commercial albums.
I mean, these people aren't into music the way I am, but idk,I guess no one cares about music as much as a lot of us here lol
I recently discovered Teardrop and LOVE but haven’t checked out the rest of the album yet
Mezzanine is dope
I had a good (and at times, very bad) time listening to music recently, I got bored so I decided I would listen to every Offsrping album just for fun since I liked what I had heard from them up until then. Probably not the best way to discover music because while I did discover a lot of new music I liked, I found a LOT of music that I thought was just ok, disliked and even hated. And it was also one band and one genre.
@@gggumball listen to something completely different that what you're used to. Im from the balkans, but ive never been into folk music and I only listened to hip-hop, r&b and pop. Once i got bored of that i started listening to folk music just because I wanted something different and I fell in love with it. Its fun because the song can have the most depressing lyrics but you're just waiting there for a dude with an accordion to bust out a crazy solo
S/O to the people in the middle. May we never close our ears to new music!

I’m a massive vinyl collector and the vast majority of my collection are from 2010s and 2020s. I still have loads of 90s and 00s, with smatterings of 60s, 70s and 80s, but there’s so much new music coming out that I find amazing and it’s reflected in my collection. When people tell me that no new music is good I just say “you’re not looking hard enough”
@@jordanday8076exactly, btw I wanna start collecting vinyls what do you recommend to start with
The word ”edm-hip-rock” sounds like someone describing hyperpop without using the words ”hyper” and ”pop”
Creating a "music waiting room" playlist on spotify actually changed my life. Like, I'll hear a fragment of a song and think "oh, this is kinda cool" but I don't know id it's good yet, so I'll add it to the waiting room and listen to the whole playlist when I'm in the mood to discover new artists. If it's good - I add it to my liked songs and if it's bad, I just delete it off the playlist and never think about it again. Recommend that system. The waiting room is usually between 7 to 11 hours long bc I always discover something new
Omg I do the exact same thing 😂
@@anirudhsaiGadipalli yaaay I'm not alone
I have one of these too. Best decision ever.
I just had this problem a week ago, I wanted to listen to Olivia’s album, Teezo’s album, and James Blake album the night they came out to be on top of releases but it was very overwhelming. Rather just take it one at a time to fully enjoy them.
Remember, between every friday are 6 other days. Spread the new stuff out!
I found out Foo Fighters released an album the day I went to get Avenged Sevenfold's new release on July 2nd. Imagine my shock that they both released on the same day, and there were more Foo Fighters than Avenged Sevenfold at Wal-Mart. To this day, "But Here We Are" is still on the CD shelves, while "Life is But a Dream" never got another restock. I eventually did get both, even though "But Here We Are" took more of a wait. I'm looking at The Rolling Stones' new album on the 20th.
@@lakerfan2874I haven't bought a CD in years lol
wanting to listen to olivia rodrigo is your mistake
no. she’s good
he was so well animated for a second at the end
I stopped reading reviews because they just love to talk negative to make them look "SMART". I don't care about other people's preference. music is just a subjective thing. I don't need to lie about myself like "I love kendrick lamar" just because those critics love kendrick lamar. I listen to what I want in the way how I want.
One of the most freeing feelings is when you allow yourself to be honest with what you enjoy and what you don't! Recently I listened to loveless for the first time and it was... extremely forgettable. It feels so good to be able to say "Yeah this isn't my thing" and move on instead of feeling like you have a moral obligation to like a beloved record.
Man I want to hate this so bad because kendrick is objectively one of the best but I'm happy you have your whole opinion
Sade has beautifull music, it's fun to know other people enjoy her music aswell.
I’ve been working on this recently and the biggest thing for me was just not overthinking and just doing
I would always say “I should watch this show” or “I should get more into music” but then begin overthinking it. It very quickly turned into a deep analysis of what the deepest core of my soul wanted, or looking online on “where to start” and by the time all the thinking was over I didn’t even want to listen to anything
So now I just turn on an album that I’ve never heard, no thinking. I make my choice in under five minutes, and from that I’ve enjoyed more music this week than I have for most of my life.
That's how I do it. Just put on a record, and by the time the first song has ended I'll know if it's worth my time or not. Sometimes it only takes 20 seconds to tell.
That's a big issue for me with all entertainment
I get overwhelmed by the vast amount, but once I actually decide to do it, I'm surprised by how relatively fast I get through it and either like it or not
One issue for me is the desire to “learn” new music I listen to.
There’ll be new albums I listen to and like enough to come back to, but it takes me a while to remember what certain songs sound like, even if I like all of the songs overall. It’s just that there’s so many of them that it’s hard to keep track, so I have to listen to the songs multiple times.
Also, now that I’m in my second year of college, I have way less time to listen to music, because I fear it will interfere greatly with me doing homework and studying. I can’t really do both simultaneously, so I usually just reserve listening to weekends now.
Honestly, two of my favorite albums from 2021 that I came back to recently are Volcanic Bird Enemy by Lil Ugly Mane and Oxidized by Frontierer, and I barely remember what each song sounds like without at least a quick reminder.
Bird Enemy is a weird psychedelic album with a lot of different sounds. I definitely remember most of the songs, but I listen to it casually so much that it's hard to remember what something like Hostage Master or Discard sound like from the top of my head.
Then there's Oxidized. Fantastic album, but I'll just say that if the words "djent" and "mathcore" don't mean anything to you, it will literally kill you. It sounds like snorting citric acid. I can't remember what half the songs sound like, and the ones I do are like Copper Iris and Damage and the Sift which have a memorable melodic hook (hard to come by on that album).
I have the same thing I also call it learning the album aswell lol
What I do is make a playlist of the songs i think are the best out of the album. Then if I listen to those repeatedly, and want more, I’ll listen to the rest on the album more and more. Hope you have an amazing music journey :)

I always discover new stuff while least expecting it (like putting on a radio while playing a game). I probably should use my 7 hours at school to discover new things but tests are already stressful enough, I don't need unfamiliar noise tickling my ears on top of it 😭
Oh nah, I was the complete opposite! When I was studying when I was 16/17ish I always put new stuff on as well as my faves so I could stimulate my brain in boring revision sessions hahaha
@@jordanday8076 yeah when im studying i always try to listen to new stuff because i wont know the lyrics therefore i wont get distracted reciting them in my head. its a good idea but sometimes i find something i really like and it kind of kills my studying lol
Nice pfp I love Hawaii prt ii
I was the same, having an excuse to listen to music is my main motivation for studying, but I rarely listened to new albums cos when I listen to something new I want to pay proper attention to it. Even outside of study tho I don't listen to albums I haven't heard nearly enough because I'm always too hung up on all the music I already like, so my albums-to-listen-to list always grows😭
@@GoogleUser-ms6hr yeah lol i have a ton of albums in my backlog, ill occasionally get to one but usually i just go back to ones i really like lol
For me discovering new music is like a cycle. Most of the time I'll listen to stuff I know and like, unable to step out of my comfort zone. But every once in a while I feel the need to hear old stuff I know but never gave a chance. I won't force myself if I don't want to.
That said, fridays are always exciting days and good pretexts to bring fresh new music into my ears.
Those music goblins are something else
i only listen to new stuff if the album cover looks good
I really miss listening to music before knowing the existence of sites like RYM and AOTY. Those sites are hella addicting and encourage you to be super critical about music. They sometimes kinda ruin my enjoyment a little bit. Although, those sites are probably the only platforms where talking about music feels safe. See, sharing your music taste could be a double-edged sword sometimes. Quotes like “that band sucks, this one is better”, “if you think that’s a masterpiece, you need to listen to more music”, etc. If it’s not some proto-post-psych-sophisti-punk-no wave experimental-avant-prog-garde rock = you have shallow music taste, therefore you are inferior.
One day I was scrolling through the comments on a reaction to an album by a Vtuber called Mori Calliope, and the people were feral. It’s as if enjoying music made by artists who are not liked by the majority = there’s something wrong with you. Comments like “this is what people with no music taste enjoys” or “I’m concerned about the mental health of these people (referring to those who enjoy the music”. People tend to harass those who enjoy artists like AJR, Taylor Swift, Twenty One Pilots, MCR, etc.
So yeah, I mostly keep quiet about my opinions when it comes to music unless it’s a music-related community.
Lmao bro out here defending Calliope's music

lowkey me ahaha
Honestly king gizzard and the lizzard wizard is enough for me to recognize that new music is still good
It was fate that this video was put on my recommended oh my god I've never felt a video so deep in my soul, was struggling to find new music I TRULY enjoyed since I was avoiding albums for a bit because of how time absorbent they are in comparison to just picking and choosing songs you're familiar with. That being said, getting back into albums and finding so much incredible music has revitalised my love for the medium and albums again
My “how to fall in love with an artist 101” (I fell in love with Tame Impala’s music in April 2023 so that’ll be my example)
1. Listen to one of their songs that is very easy to like on first listen. A lot of artists most popular songs or highest rated albums usually have this quality. Let It Happen was my first Tame Impala song and I thought it was amazingly good.
2. If you really liked a song, find the album it’s from and listen through it. Liking new music takes time, so you might think a handful of the songs were “pretty good”, and only a few very good. I listened to Currents shortly after finding Let It Happen and wow it was good.
3. You’re gonna wanna listen to the songs you really liked a lot (at least this is the case for me), and that’s fine. This is a part of cementing yourself as a fan. But don’t only listen to the ones you loved! Put the album on shuffle, and you might find that some of the “pretty good” songs were better than that. In my case this happened with Eventually and Reality In Motion. When my ears click with a song it cannot be undone, I’ll always find it likable. 99% of the time.
4. Don’t let your first album from the artist get stale, if you start feeling a desire to explore more do it. Currents was my kryptonite for 3 weeks but after that I knew I wanted more. So I listened to Lonerism, and followed the same pattern as before. Obsessively played the songs I loved on first listen, but had the others shuffled in and let them play here and there. I’d also throw Currents songs into the mix. At this point I was obsessed with Tame Impala as a whole, and getting into his songs was happening much, much quicker and easier for me. I listened to his other 2 albums 1 day apart, and to this day I’m loving songs that I kinda ignored before. I’ll probably ease out of my Tame Impala phase but I’ll probably be revisiting his music frequently.
Now, I’m not saying this is objectively effective for becoming a fan of an artist. People’s brains are different and music taste is subjective, everyone has their own preference and pace. For me though this process was very, very effective and it is how I’ve fallen in love with other artists besides Tame Impala. Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk, btw plz explore that discog if you haven’t it’s worth a shot :)
Glad I not alone when it comes the feeling of stepping out of your comfort zone and listening to new music. I struggle a lot with this tbh. Back in 2021 and early 2022 I opened myself up to a plethora of new music and really enjoyed it, but towards the end of 2022 I jsut stopped trying to find new music. I don’t even know why honestly. I’m the kind of person that listens to all their music in their likes songs playlist and I went 3 whole months without adding any new music to it and jsut listening to the 1k+ songs I had there on repeat which led me to become tired of all those songs I had there. Previously I feared that I wasn’t in the right setting or mood to listen to new music and/or wouldn’t have a good experience listening to it. On the other hand, sometimes I get FOMO and feel like I need to experience a certain album but then those aforementioned fears arise. It’s kinda like an endless cycle tbh lol. But recently I began taking the initiative to listen to new music more often and have expanded my taste even more
Everytime, I just..... THESE ANIMATIONS ARE SO ADORABLE
I love how your videos are so unique!
i’m definitely in the middle too, but im also a sucker for my comfort music and staying in what i like to listen too. i normally just add music from the artists i love and try to listen to their old stuff now and then to see if i can find anything i love, but it’s very hard for me to add any new artist and truly get into their music.
The most important thing I do when it comes to music is to save music even when I do not necessarily like them, if I suddenly remember the melody in my head or if I hear the song again in a different format (like radio, social media, etc), I may come back to it and determine if my thoughts on that particular song has changed. I do not tend to call any music weird or nonsensical, because different artists will have different intentions when producing this music. I know what I like, and I do not want to follow trends in music even if it may be good, it’s just my taste that matters.
I really appreciate that you're doing these videos because I find them very interesting. I feel like there's a lot of people out there (myself included, to an extent) who feel insecure about their music taste or think that they're listening to music "the wrong way", so it's really nice to have some discussion about this and get some piece of mind. I would love to see another one on music listening moods, or one's attitude/mindset when listening to music. I feel like there's a ton of music that I'm not able to give a chance because I'm in the wrong frame of mind and I'd love to get some advice on that.
My favorite thing about most of my music footprint residing on YT is that I have a “liked music” album that’s like 2k songs long dating all the way back to my youngest years on the internet and I can just, shuffle play, and listen to a core childhood memory and then hatsunimiku and then pusha t and then Jimmi Hendrix and it’s just like, damn
feel that struggle with switching from vegas to pro. stay strong brother. it's funny, one way i've gotten to listening to music i normally wouldn't have is actually going to the library again and taking out CDs for my car. on my way to work and back, i've been able to listen to a bunch of different albums and artists i've missed out on, plus if it doesn't click right away i can't just turn it off. it forces me to give different music a chance and most of the time, i end up coming around to it and loving it. (shoutout a majority of carly rae jepen's discography)
For me, listening to new music becomes hard when I overdo it and enter a time period during the year where there isn't anything super interesting that's dropping.
I discover many new albums and artists on Album Of The Year by checking the new releases every Friday, and picking a few to check out every week. Doing that has resulted in me checking out 120+ albums in 2023, and nearly burning out completely during the summer, as that was the "uninteresting" period of the year for me. Thankfully September's increase in music quality helped get me out of my burnout, but it really goes to show that listening to new music can sometimes feel like a chore.
Doing other things while listening, such as going for a walk or playing video games, really goes a long way and makes it way easier, so it's something I highly recommend.
I'm also glad you mentioned album swaps, as I've only done it once, and want to do it way more. I've been so focused on new releases, that it'll be a good way for me to check out some classics and iconic albums that I feel like I should've already listened to.
Good video!
it's easier to listen to new stuff when you mostly listen to playlists, because those usually mix the familiar with the unfamiliar and you can be both excited about the stuff you haven't heard as well as excited about the ones you have..

I relate with this video sooo much. I love branching out to different genres and discovering amazing music (which i thought i would never like). I was an edm head too and i hated hip hop and for the past 5 years i have been listening to hip hop daily xddd. Now i am starting to listen to more rock, metal, alternative, idm and its amazing. But i do have to say that some music fans need to chill the fuck out and stop acting like there is a proper way to discover "x" artist/genre. Be happy that people are intrested in it and be welcoming. Thats all i guess.

Then maybe just listen to music without doing the other stuff?
I am autistic and have really bad anxiety. I don’t active choose to change thing if it’s not broken, but I’m less fearful of change now than in the past. Meaning I’m the type of person who tend to stick to the same things. Like I don’t tend to search out new music and there’s like ten artists max I check out their new stuff. Sometimes I listen to new stuff my friend sends me who know me well (or it’s just me wanting to people please that in a way could benefit me).

the 1001 albums you must listen to before you die list.
Everyday I get a new album, and I find that it’s a good way for me to branch out and find things i probably wouldn’t have gone out of my way to listen to.
Most of my life, the ones giving me song recommendations was from video games. I'd hear a song and really like it just to go listen to their other songs, only to realize it was just that one song i like. This wasn't always the case like forza horizon's soundtrack, and nfs mw '05s soundtrack. But that was waaaay back then and now most of the songs i listen to are just me discovering on my own. Also shoutout to gta for introducing me to Battle Tapes, greatest ever to me.
I discovered Battle Tapes earlier this year through a RUclips Music recommendation, and their newest album was really good. As an electronic music fan, racing games have some of the best soundtracks out there, especially games from the early 2000's.

RIGHT ON BROHTER i got an edm hip rock ep coming out soon
FINALLY, I can talk about this topic in context!!
My music in June hasn't really been all that expansive with the main two projects I listened to being an alternative pop (?) album called My Soft Machine by Arlo Parks and an electronic album called Earwax by SixImpala (that band has been a special interest for 2 years someone get me out), so in the July school holidays, I would listen to an album or EP everyday, and I even found one of my favourite albums from there, Disk 1 by Gregor McMurray, who is another fire electronic artist. I loved a lot of the stuff I listened to in this time frame, but I keep wondering to myself, "am I really _that_ open minded when it comes to this stuff?"

Watch out it’s Mr. Bites!
That ending was something...
i discovered burial this year via a video from tracklib about archangel and how it was sampled.
something just clicked when i listened archangel for the first time. the melancholic vibe, the pitch-shifted vocals, the album cover, it was right up my alley, even though before that i was mostly listening rock, metal and hip-hop.
3:02 “the unusual” 💀
Balancing the new rap, pop, and metal albums is one helluva task for me
i'm gonna be honest, when I first heard Utopia. it was hard for me to listen to it but after the hype calms down then I can enjoy it.
I hate it when I ask about a specific band/ artist and mf'er is like, "erm, start with this album and then listen to this album and try these songs from their lesser known album and THEN only when you're ready do you listen to their masterpiece" like dog, please just drop some of your favorites and I'll go from there 😭😭😭😭
I mean, I basically sort of like everything. My process just being I go on rym, and just dig into rabbitholes. Maybe investigate a label or a scene or an aesthetic.
I just pick an album that I immediately find most interesting to listen to and just listen to it. I have a bucketlist, but it's mostly just there as a backup in case I don't have any immediate ideas.
Sometimes maybe just go to a thrift shop and buying some 1 dollar CD that had an interesting cover.
For me, RYM had made me enjoy music so much more since it's such an easy place to just... look for music, just any kind. If there's a genre you don't recognize, you can just quickly read up the genre page and dig into it. I mostly ignore the score ratings because sometimes what people dislike is what I'm looking for.
I don't really try and actively keep up with whatever's coming out, though I do see whatever's on the RYM chart. It's more fun to treat music as an adventure rather than a laundry list to things I need to get through. Who cares, it's more fun to just have the sea take you somewhere than limiting yourself to a massive bucketlist.
