As a metalhead it always makes me happy to see people actually give heavy music a chance. So many people get scared by metal and think that we’re evil people and that all metal is just screaming. 99% of metalheads are super awesome and nice people. Thanks to Nu Metal bands like Korn, a lot of hip hop fans and rap fans started getting into metal.

As a white boy who's brain processes rock music as default music in which all other forms of music are just weird variations of rock music, it's really fun to hear the perspective of someone not too familiar with it getting into it. Like when you described discovering punk, man that was cool. Or how you described Nirvana as having 'early 2000s Disney channel vibes' when in reality a lot the disney channel in the early 2000s had Nirvana vibes cuz Nirvana came first. Good video.

As a multiracial person, I tend to think of music in terms of classical, metal, and folk, (the proper sort that’s been around for a century or more) and other music seems like strange takes on that in stages of the ship of Theseus: sometimes it’s quite similar, sometimes quite distant.
But all punk sounds like early 2000s teenager movie to me. It all sounds like the same people, same tone, same everything, whereas metal is greatly nuanced and complex by comparison, to my ear.
      Strange.

One of my favorite things about rock is not only the beautiful use of drums, guitar, and bass (also the more organic sound to it compared to a lot of the digitally produced songs today), but also the many sub-genres inside of it. Just to name a few of my favorite genres, you have punk, metal, emo, and shoegaze. While these may seem like broad and undescriptive terms, there are actually many different sub-genres in these genres of rock, such as pop punk, ska punk, post-punk, horror punk, thrash metal, heavy metal, nu-metal, alternative metal, midwest emo, emo pop, and emo rap. To add even more to the diverse genre of rock, there are also combinations of different genres to create a new and unique genre, such as grunge in the early 90s (a combination of punk, metal, and alternative rock). While I have mentioned a great deal of genres already, this is only the tip of iceberg, as there are many many more genres that are either mainstream or underground. This is why I love rock music so much, as there is a sound for everybody, no matter how different your music tastes are. Another thing I really enjoy about this is the experience of being able to explore different sub-genres and possibly find your favorite band or genre. Lastly, I think that the diverse nature of rock music also allows me to never tire of it, as I could always switch sub-genres if I'm getting tired of the band or song I'm listening to.
P.S. some bands I recommend based off of the bands you mentioned in the video would be Title Fight, Alice in Chains, Sunny Day Real Estate, Soundgarden, and the Linkin Park, give them a listen if you want!

I've been playing guitar consistently for 4 years and the inverse happened to me. Wherein I recently got into rap and grime lately after strictly listening to instrumental guitar genres, from rock to djent to jazz rock fusion. Its such a great feeling to gain an appreciation and liking for a genre you never really bothered listening to before.
It's not that I found instrumental guitar boring, its just fatiguing to listen to when you just want to relax. They're great when I want to get inspired to play or learn new ways to approach the instrument, but after such a long time, it felt like a job; repetitively having to keep a part of my brain on to analyze what I'm listening to.
I found comfort in rap as the musical elements are simpler. The intervals are more digestable and sound less cacophonic. Great when I just want to vibe around.
Happy for you for learning guitar, its a great instrument and I hope you keep up at it!
P.s. Just watched you yesterday and your video "YEAT fans be like" came up on my recommended. It was funny and entertaining as Yeat is my favourite rap artist at the moment lmao

There are some awesome bands that don't have the screamy vocals and still sound heavy. One of the best (in my opinion) for starting with heavier musc sub-genres of metal is nu-metal (so called rap rock), it mixes in a lot of different genres like hip hop and rap which i think is worth checking out if you're new to metal and rock. I always love videos like this. Partially because people shoukd expand their musical tastes and explore. But also because I had a similar experience in reverse. I started listening to rock and punk, and then eventually wanted something else and started getting into rap.
Granted, I'm not gonna lie about it. I think part of the reason I hated rap growing up was because my parents are fairly racist... So I didn't have a healthy view of black people growing up. So the only rap I really listened to that I can remember was Eminem and Will Smith. But then I got older and started to actually talk more to black kids in my school and realized it was all dumb.
But any ways, I remember hanging out with some friends. A rap song came on, and I kind of liked it. So I got the album. I don't even remember which one it was at this point. But then I started listening to some similar stuff. Then I would hear a song in a game and really like it, while before I would have ignored it.
Now I listen to all kinds of stuff. And I think it was for similar reasons. I was mostly listening to the same stuff on repeat. A new album would drop, and I would be excited, but after awhile even that excitement wasn't as strong. So I branched out, and I'm glad I did.

I listened to Yeat and Opium only but I loved this local band called Flipturn(it's like indie rock)so I decided I wanted to find out more music like it, so I put in Flipturn radio and the first song that played was Booster Seat by Spacey Jane. They're this Australian indie rock band and I'm not joking when I say they make some of the best music I've ever heard. So clean, the vocals, lyrics, production, it's all amazing and the guys' voice was amazing. I then went through the Australian indie rock scene and while nothing was as good as Spacey Jane, there still was some heat. Trucks by Spacey Jane is literally the best song I've ever listened to. The vocals, the story, the lyrics, and the production, actually gave me a feeling of nostalgia and it doesn't even try it just is talking about hard times and working through the low points but something about it was so pure. People call me emo now but I don't care. Listen to Booster Seat by Spacey Jane and you'll go through the same thing.

Wow, similar to my upbringing. I grew up in the hood in the 90's, listening to 2pac, biggie, Coolio, and a bunch of rap. One day I was transferred to another school, and kids were cool there. They put me on to Nirvana, 311, sublime, and Korn. I felt like I could relate to the music for some reason. I stopped listening to Rap and started my journey into rock. Even though I was still in tune with the hip hop culture, rock was a big part of my life. Went to see a lot of bands in concert like the stone temple pilots and unwritten law. I ended up putting some of my hood friends onto rock, songs like Inside Out by Anthrax and Epic by Faith No More, and they liked it. Yo, my dude, rock music is the best music to discover. Keep digging deeper into punk, alternative, grunge, and even metal. More power to you, bro.

I got into rap late asf (2017 HS sophmore) so before that I was into lofi, edm, alt etc. Glad I never fell into a box where I only found rap entertaining to listen to, but I gotta say I can see why so many people fuck with it after having listened for like 6 years now. Definitely has this vibe to it that makes you wanna rap along and with all the complex flows and styles, it never gets old.

No matter what music you like, you're probably gonna love King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. They're an australian band that does tons of genres, modern synth pop to 70s thrash metal. Their main genre is psychedelic rock, which is basically just rock with just tons of weird effects. I'm only 9 albums into their 23 (soon to be 24) album discography, so I havent heard any albums that really show off everything they can do. Listen to any album of theirs.
EDIT: I'm now 18 albums into their 24 (soon to be 25) album discography, and they're one of the most diverse bands I've ever heard.

I grew up on rock/metal/punk music, but got myself a lot into rap/hip-hop as I got older. I think 2010-2015 were just absolute golden ages for rap music, new artists were popping up like mushrooms, banger after banger. Even the new wave with all the Soundcloud rappers had something unique to offer, but as time went on, I got super bored of it all. I feel like a lot of mainstream rap nowadays is just about becoming viral on tiktok, it became repetitive, and I stopped feeling passion in this music. Rap fatigue was just settled in for good for me, so the past year I was on a journey of discovering rock, metal and punk music all over again. It got me to explore some more niche genres like shoegaze, black metal or hardcore punk. I fucking love the raw emotion and lyrics in this music, the emotion factor especially is something I've been missing in hip hop a lot. I don't feel like I can even come back to rap anymore, every time I see a new song dropping from my favourite rap artist, I can't seem to listen it entirely. Rap just isn't innovative anymore, while hardcore is booming rn, emo is having a revival, and again - it's just pure fucking passion and emotion in this, while I feel rap and hip hop, just became a gateway to being a rich celebrity, rather than music itself.
