Great review! One thing that I find very interesting from the full mix comparisons (16:24 - 17:24) is that the Redback lead is able to stand out against Redback rhythm. In other words, when the full mix is the same speaker, it can still "cut through the mix".

Very thorough & informative video. I play a lot of different styles, but am currently writing a lot of metal. I'm currently using a Peavey Triple X II through a 4 x 12, Seventy 80 cab. I'm loving my tone, except for the "fizz" that can set-in if I'm not really careful about how I set my treble & presence, & the low-end, "thunk" that I'm getting is great at lower volumes, but tends to get a little "farty" when cranked. I originally had my next cab planned as a 2 x 12 with g-t100s or G-k100s. The ts are known to get a little "fizzy" & the ks to be a little dark, so, thanks to this video, I think I now have it nailed down to the 150 Redback. Thank You SO much for this thorough review.
I got 2 of the redbacks today for a 2x12 and could not be happier. Whether the ENGL Invader 150 (Channel 3) or on my Maragold in the clean channel boosted with a Friedman BE Pedal to higain glory. Very smooth. The best representation in the video I found starting @16:24 - as I also own the Vintage 30 and the G12T-75 I can fairly say that, if you are undecided what Celestion to buy, this really is close to what I hear in differences within my room. Everything is... personal taste.
I replaced a vintage 30 with a redback in my ppc112 cab my Orange Super Crush 100 just loves it. I never got on with the V30 they’re a bit overhyped and you don’t want to run a 100 watt head with just one. The Redbacks are a great sounding speaker I’m thinking about putting them in my Marshall 2x12 cab.
Really good demo of the Celestion high gain sounds. I ordered the Redback. The 150W Eminence Texas Heat has been my workhorse for a Marshall JTM style amp, just in case I needed to open it up. A new amp came home this weekend, JMP this time. Sounds good as it opens up so I figured this Redback should have some Celestion flavor to compliment it.
... a year later and I really enjoy it’s sound. It landed on the JTM style head which gives off tremendous bottom, this speaker performs as shown, but the bottom is something that must be experienced. EQ’d but not limited, I’m well under and still getting the fullest/richest sound, 1 of 4 speakers in a 4x cab. Killer comparison at the end of this video. Peavey is the perfect neutral amplifier. -Jim

@@ehirachetaOf course that will sound great, because the Eminence and Celestion sounds are different. Their mids are different, so a unique voice to the Texas Heat would like pair well with the burly Redback. I should get these two paired up, I was just thinking of doing exactly that on a stereo Mesa power amp. With the Redback at home with my JTM, I rarely experiment further. I definitely should. The Texas Heat was a good speaker on everything I tried it on, but have added some Marshall cabs with new Greenback speakers, their Heritage lineup and I am still getting to know each of those. The Redback kicks a lot of butt. However the 20W G12M (the Eddie Van Halen speaker) is really quite warm, the G12H(55) is also a weird tone (the Jimi Hendrix speaker), and the G12H(75) is the bright and natural sounding Greenback, most closely comparing to the standard G12M 25 watt. Of course, I’m monitoring through SM57, and that can reveal a much different tone to that which you would hear naturally. Some say it’s a microscope for audio. But for recording, the Red and the Tex are both good warm options.

I put one in my 65 DRRI and I’m astonished by the clarity. The stock jensen sounded great but at 10 it became flubby . The efficiency of the red back means that the voice coil stays cool even at high gain over long hours.
How big is the jump in volume between the two speakers? I tend to play with the volume 4-5, mostly clean. Does it provides much more difference in volume since it's a much bigger wattage amp?
First off, love the blue and cream Les Paul, secondly thank you. I love the K100, but the hollow mids always bugged me. Redback sounds like a cleaner, tighter, more hifi speaker with way more mids. Sold!
I have an Orange CR120 (120w) 2x12 combo. I'm seriously considering buying a Redback for it to go alongside the Orange 'Voice of the World' 60w speaker, it's basically a Celestion V30 modified by Orange for a tighter bottom end and more focused mids. I have an extension Celestion V30 loaded 4x12 cab, too. I just love the earth core shattering of a combined 6x12 rig... But then, I'm a Drone, Stoner, Doom and Gloom player. :P Keep up the great work. :)
Every time I come back to this excellent video I'm reminded of two things... First, when it comes to high wattage Celestions, the Redback destroys the K100 in this shootout and Second... I love the M65 Creamback. This is a great representation of what it can do. I've got one and it metals! Redbacks coming soon.

awesome review !! i really want a redback now ^^ ... btw. the heatproblem also comes from it frequency response. would it be just a subwoofer the membran would move much more and therefore cool the speaker more ... but since it is optimised for mids the membrane does not move as much so cooling by membrane movement does not work as much
+holmesseth thanks! If you like the super-clean fender sounds then this would be a bit dark, but if you go for the fender combos with a more "forward" midrange then the Redback might work well
Yes but low wattage amps won't push the speaker so you get a more sterile sound (like when he's got the Peavey on 1). Having a high watt speaker doesn't diminish the power of your amp. People in rock like to push a speaker to get a "broken up" tone, but in jazz or metal etc sometimes you want a more sturdy, controlled sound where the speaker isn't jumping from the power.
Great video, well done! I prefer the sound of the V30 - maybe because I'm so used to it... That 75W Creamback on it's own sounded like Pantera IMO, awesome. There is something in the Redback I don't like. Think it's that thin line of very fine grain (or sandpaper) I don't want to hear. Again, great video. Subbed!
Yes it reminded me of a vintage 30 sound... At 90 watts I guess. Wasn't for me. I dig on the evm12l tone.. Fame has a 90 watt speaker that sounds very good to me.
Well, I really didn't like the Redbacks much. Something about them was not right to me when distorted. The cleans were nice, but after that there was something off to me about them. I did find out I really like the Vintage 30's and the Creamback G12H that really stood out to me that handled the lows, mids, and highs very nicely. I might have to put one of each n my 2X12 next month. Thanks for the review. It really helped me make my choice. Lets just hope they sound as great in a Marshall 2X12 cabinet.
I purchased and put in my Peavy PAG 120 ( 200wt).I realized today we all mic and don't need this power on stage like they did in the 70's. Well, It doesn't have low end dynamics in the average usable range. Maybe at 150 watts it will push it and get to pumping. My Victory amp with Celestion creamback 65 16 ohm (15w/40watt) has a ton of more usable tone . The Peavy was just returned from the factory for a complete go through re tubed etc. So its time to find the correct combo, but at this try it did not perform like I was hoping.NO knocks on the speaker , its just my application and my desired sounds.
The biggest thing I took away from this is how much I dislike the G12M-65 Creamback. It sounds *awful*. The G12M-75 Creamback is slightly better, but both pale in comparison to the Vintage 30 (what I currently play). The Redback, by comparison sounds oddly flat, but maybe not in a bad way. I think it would probably make a good driver for a modelling amp or IR cab simulator. The biggest surprise to me, however, was the G12K-100, which I don't think I've ever heard before. There's a definite scoop to the midrange response, there. Sounds like a great "solo in the living room" driver, but might be a bit weak in ensemble playing. I'd love to hear how these speakers compare with the AlNiCo Cream, which is, I think, my favorite of them all. The Vintage 30 was actually specifically designed to replicate as closely as possible the AlNiCo Blue with a higher power handling in a ceramic magnet. It comes very close, but the AlNiCo Cream is closer. I rate the Blue #1, the Cream #2, and the Vintage 30 #3.
I think my favorite is the G12H-75 overall.. But I like the low end of the red back and the high mids of the Vintage 30. So we could make a 212 with these speaker, micing the rear of the redback + the center ''off axis'' of a v30, and blend them in the mix. That would sound awesome dude.
I’ve got a Mesa/Boogie Mark IV and a Mesa DC-5 (the DC is the same preamp as the Dual Rectifier...or so Mesa says anyways) I’m curious as to weather a Red Back would bring more clarity, thump, and tighten the DC-5 to stand against the Mark IV? I really like the G12H-75 and Eminence CV-75 for the Mark IV and wanted another-speaker combo to keep up with the Mark IV for the DC-5.
Hi Gareth! I’m not sure the Redback would give you clarity, it’s more of a low baritone voice to the speaker, good to match with a slightly strident bright amp- maybe a V30 and Lynchback if you can find one would be a great combo?
I would like to have a Redback. Not sure if my 6505+ 112 Combo at 60 Watts is going to be suitable to push it though. Still, I love the Redback and may try it.
They would work wonderfully together! Don’t worry about the speakers power rating, that’s literally just a guide for how much power you can put through it before it sets fire. You’d get a bit more of a baritone growl from the amp. I’ve modded one of those combos and use the head in the studio, it’s great

+Hop Pole Studios. I agree with above opinion. Your video is high quality. Listening to all the sound is a pleasant experience. I just have one critic. You play the sound and then you talk and play the sound again and repeat. In the end, you repeat again all the sound together. IMO, it isn't nice. It breaks my concentration. Especially if you do comparison like this. For short explanation, you can give it with text while the sound is playing. For long explanation tell it before/after the sound test. In this way, my concentration doesn't jump between sound and your explanation.

Looks like a nice speaker. Thing is, I never cared much for Celestion's high power guitar speakers (though I can appreciate their high headroom characteristics) but damn their low watt speakers are fricking awesome sounding! The Greenback and the alnico Blue, while expensive as all hell, are hands down the best speakers I've ever used with my old Marshall tube half stacks! I even use the green in my Fender hotrod deville combo and it's just phenomenal at low or high volume levels!
If you like the tone of the redbacks but don't need that much power handling because you'll be pushing through a 4x12 cab what would be most similar to be able to handle 100 watts of tube amp?
+Preston Lasater that would be four red backs! Don't worry about the power handling limits, if it's your tone it should work nicely. Alternatives might be the Creamback H75 or M65
Remember too that your volume, gain and bass potentiometers are not linear pots, they exponential so the increase is higher on the 60% than standard pots
As much as I respect Celestion, I really can't say I liked the sound of any of these speakers. However I did download your shootout track and after a moment of playing in DAW it appeared that the redback sounded the best when combined with another speaker.
The thing i have learned is some amps don't sound good unless they are cranked. With a 150W speaker you can dime those high powered amps without having to use a 4x12 speaker cabinet. This speaker is probably one of the best voiced speakers Celestion has to offer. Tight lows, detailed mids, and sweet highs make this speaker perfect for those high powered amps that sound like shit till they are cranked. Imagine putting 2 of these in a Fender Twin. You could turn your twin into a Dumble.
You read my mind, when I first saw the advertisement for the Redback I thought, at last a Fender Super Twin or Twin Reverb speaker with tone. Good demo.
Interesting comparison, but I'm not sure how much of the sound difference is the power tubes working much harder vs. how much is the speaker running much harder. I personally run my Mesa Road King into a Marshall Power Brake set to zero output, then take the amp's aux out into stereo FX and a stereo power amp and back out the Road King's speakers. This setup is such that when the FX are off, I can't tell whether the speakers are direct from the Mesa or from the stereo amp. AND.... I find the differences you're showing around 13:40 are EXACTLY the kind of difference I hear with different levels of power tube gain. This would back up reading I've done (that I don't take as gospel) that speaker volume simply has no effect on their tone. There **IS** no subtle non-linearity, say some sources. I'd suggest to repeat your test with 1) test tone, such as a sawtooth from a synth, 2) a transistor amp, and 3) record your mic'd speaker at a range of volumes from 0.1 to 10. Use Audacity's nice harmonic analysis view and see if you can see ANY changes after correcting for volume. I may be wrong but my hunch is, no.
One of the reasons for having a higher wattage speaker now days is the fact that some players use a lot of effects with a huge low end. Massive fuzzes, octavers, synth pedals etc.
How is higher wattage going to help with that. If a speaker isn't designed to work in a specific frequency range and that is where you use it you may be in for a new set of speakers much sooner, eg if you play a base with guitar speakers very much you will ruin them. You can have a speaker that is low watt but designed for base and it will be fine, as long as you don't get too loud.
@SaintFredrocks Generally though changing things to suit a bigger wattage (heavy magnets, stronger glues, cones design etc) gives you more low end and more headroom (which low end takes up a lot of). Of course this is dependent on design and high wattage doesnt mean more con excursion. People also need huge headroom amps for those huge low end sound so then you need speakers that can handle this.
Might be worth noting that as the master volume is increased, the speaker will begin to distort more, but so will the power section of the amp. Point being, the audible increase in distortion is not solely coming from the speaker.
+Alex it's entirely coming from the power section of the amp as far as I can hear, even at full whack the speakers not at or near it's power handling limit!
One sad thing about the loud single-speaker systems is that a 2 or 4 speaker system gives each ear different constructive and destructive interference from the phasing. (Due to the exact distance from speaker to ear, divided by wavelengths of the sounds.) On a recording a single speaker may sound better without any interference. But live, I'd guess multiple speakers always sound better.
You don’t stick your head in between the speakers, they’re so close together as to act as a single unit. If they weren’t, you’d suffer from terrible comb filtering depending on where you moved to. The ideal sound comes from a point source, or at least a line- that’s why modern PA systems have moved from large walls of speakers to line arrays
Yeah as long as you match the impedance to the head (the HTs are quite good for this if I remember). They are a little dark so I’d ease off on the bass control, but they should match well
I REALLY LIKE YOUR DEMOS ONE GOOD IDEA WOULD BE TO HAVE A LIGHT SHINING ON THE SPEAKER CONE AS YOU PLAY AND TEST AND TURN UP THE VOLUME SO WE CAN SEE HOW MUCH THE CONE MOVES WITH DIFFRENT TONES AND POWER.
I don't understand one thing. If I have a 100 W head, then I just turn the volume to 3 (on a scale of 0 - 10). Does the amp still use all of its power ?? Or does it use less than 100 W ?? Sorry if I get all the technical term wrong. I'm not familiar with electrical stuff.
No, the rating of an amplifier is roughly the maximum power available (so you'd have to have it on full volume all the time to be using 100W). The reason people use higher wattage heads is if they don't want the power section to distort so much at a reasonable volume - either for a more punchy tone, or so you can get more volume out of the amp without it turning into a fuzzy sound
Just to build on this, a lot of amp manufacturers rate their amps on CLEAN wattage, such as Matamp. The Matamp GT1 is rated at 100W (it's maximum clean wattage), but puts out 170W when fully cranked.

Sure, it’s all about the sound rather than the power handling. Do you want a speaker that’s got a deep gutsy sound? This might be exactly what you want
You could use it but I think it would be unnessesary and not be the best sound since you'll have way to much speaker headroom. In other words don't do it. But to each is own, I just think you'd be disappointed.

The Vintage 30 didn't get its name from sounding like a G12H-30. They don't really sound very much alike at all. It got its name because it has a 30 cm diameter

Yeh there were a few high powered speakers back then, but they really did compromise on tone in my opinion. And like you say I couldn’t cover them all without sending people to sleep!

Be fair, 100W is a very general ballpark figure given for the layman, the actual power depends on a huge number of factors including plate voltage and bias, both of which can be different from one “100W” head to the next. Having said that, the same can be said for the speaker where the power rating is more of a general guideline for matching the right power stage to the right number/configuration of speakers. I’ve run a 25W speaker with a 100W head before with no issues, as long as it’s for fairly short bursts so the speaker doesn’t get so hot as to catch fire

+MrOzgooner I think so, if not a little more warm. It's designed more like the H75 so its a bit more forward, loud and proud but also a bit dark so it's not piercing
Why did you forget the Celestion G12H-100, a superior speaker to the G12K-100. There were 4 x 12 cabs with this speaker rated at 400W. But that was back in the 80s and you´re to young to remember. By the way: AC/DC used this cabs.
Forget? It’s not made anymore so it’s largely pointless to throw in. My age is irrelevant, I’m a collector with cabs and speakers going back to the early 70s (60s cabs are usually either beyond repair or beyond affordability). The K100 is still in production
The speaker sounds that is on pain. 120 watt head can go well beyond 150watt when changed. Most amps rated at 100watt mean 100watt before the power section starts distorting.
+Myself6M I don't know where you got that idea from, it's the maximum power rating, not before distortion. And the sound at full volume is the EL34 tubes being driven, typical Marshall type sound
Well, it depends on the manufacturer. Traditionally, Marshall labels the 100watt Plexi heads in terms of the wattage the amp can supply clean, before the amp goes non linear. So a lot of 100 watt Plexi heads give 150 watts or more when fully ranked depending on the model and year. I am strictly referring on the power amp clean headroom and distortion. A lot of British manufacturers like, Marshall, Vox, Orange, Hiwatt, still use the same principle. This is why their are often described as incredible loud. This is how the rule of thumb that the cabinet has to be twice the heads wattage arouse. Other American manufacturers don't stick to that. But, I may have exaggerated in my comment. What I meant is that IMHO, the speaker sounded quite a bit distorted when you cranked the amp. I may be wrong though!
By the way. I never tried the redback. May I ask what do you think of it? How does it compare to the creamback H and v30. I am looking for a high power speaker in order to run a 50watt rockerverb in a 1x12 ported cab. In general I like the speakers staying tight in high gain, but I also like good clean and nice British crunch.
This is partially correct. Amps, just like speakers, are rated at the level they can reliably handle long term. Just like speakers that can handle higher spikes, amps are known to spike above their rated wattage. It's not uncommon for a 100w Marshall to spike up to 170. This is why people with 100w 1x12s blow speakers. A 100w amp with 150W speaker should be safe provided the speaker can handle the spikes. A 120w amp SHOULD still be alright as well consider a 150w speaker should be able to take spikes up to a little over 200w if its of good design and construction. That being said, it doesn't have anything to do with the level the power amp starts distorting, that is a completely separate discussion.
A typical Marshall 100 watt RMS amp puts out about 180 to 200 watts peak. This is common knowledge. That is why the rule of thumb is that if you have a 100 watt (valve) amp, you should have double that figure of power handling capability on the speaker side. In other words if you want to run a 100 watt amp on Full volume (!!) then you need 200 watts of power handling, speakerwise, to be "safe". Ask Marshall, Ask Celestion.
The only way to really know how much power or "wattage" the amp is pushing into the speaker is with a scope or some sort of tool... you may not be doing much more than 80 wats... or you may actually be surpassing 120 especially with distortion. Remember its 120 watts RMS... however the amp can and will peak out much much higher... and that is usually what blows speakers.
I disagree about the peaks blowing speakers (having interviewed the guys at Celestion and heard this first hand) - what blows speakers is usually excessive heat burning the voice coils until the insulators on the copper wire melt. This can only happen under sustained loads where the heat has no time to escape- and as such only happens under prolonged RMS loads. Improvements in materials are what have led to speakers having high power ratings- they can get hot and not suffer from failures until much higher temperatures, which a guitar amp is simply unable to produce. Unless a peak signal is a huuuuuge spike (like a DC offset signal) then the speaker will bend and buckle first, which is what makes vintage design speakers have a softer sound with less transient coming through
As long as your lowest rated speaker times number is speakers is equal or greater than your amp's rating than you're good. For example a 25 watt Greenback and a 65 watt Creamback in a 212 can handle a 50 watt amp.
Lol, Celestion is pretty late to the game. Eminence has been doing this for a while now, as well as other companies. I know, I know, "but they aren't Celestion".
+kikster93 nah they've made loads. They've got the biggest r&d department of any guitar speaker maker. For me though, it was always a compromise until very recently- the power handling would change the tone (for better or worse)- now it's very close to the classic greenback-ish tone but with all the power benefits

I have the redback in a 1x12 with a 120w head. It seems to sound better everytime I play it and I'm not scared of blowing it out!

A new amp came home this weekend, JMP this time. Sounds good as it opens up so I figured this Redback should have some Celestion flavor to compliment it.
... a year later and I really enjoy it’s sound. It landed on the JTM style head which gives off tremendous bottom, this speaker performs as shown, but the bottom is something that must be experienced. EQ’d but not limited, I’m well under and still getting the fullest/richest sound, 1 of 4 speakers in a 4x cab.

@@ehirachetaOf course that will sound great, because the Eminence and Celestion sounds are different. Their mids are different, so a unique voice to the Texas Heat would like pair well with the burly Redback.
I should get these two paired up, I was just thinking of doing exactly that on a stereo Mesa power amp. With the Redback at home with my JTM, I rarely experiment further. I definitely should.
The Texas Heat was a good speaker on everything I tried it on, but have added some Marshall cabs with new Greenback speakers, their Heritage lineup and I am still getting to know each of those.
The Redback kicks a lot of butt. However the 20W G12M (the Eddie Van Halen speaker) is really quite warm, the G12H(55) is also a weird tone (the Jimi Hendrix speaker), and the G12H(75) is the bright and natural sounding Greenback, most closely comparing to the standard G12M 25 watt.
Of course, I’m monitoring through SM57, and that can reveal a much different tone to that which you would hear naturally. Some say it’s a microscope for audio. But for recording, the Red and the Tex are both good warm options.
I'm anxious to see how it and the marks get along... if well of course, there's another mark iv (v, iii, so on) combo option.
The Redback is something special, it has both darkness and clarity to it. It very easily destroyed all the others.

I watched this before without context but I've just ordered a Zilla Fatboy with a pair of these bad boys to run with my Blackstar Series 1 200... Can't wait because they sound the absolute dogs!!!
I put one in my 65 DRRI and I’m astonished by the clarity. The stock jensen sounded great but at 10 it became flubby . The efficiency of the red back means that the voice coil stays cool even at high gain over long hours.
How big is the jump in volume between the two speakers? I tend to play with the volume 4-5, mostly clean. Does it provides much more difference in volume since it's a much bigger wattage amp?
First off, love the blue and cream Les Paul, secondly thank you. I love the K100, but the hollow mids always bugged me. Redback sounds like a cleaner, tighter, more hifi speaker with way more mids. Sold!

I have an Orange CR120 (120w) 2x12 combo. I'm seriously considering buying a Redback for it to go alongside the Orange 'Voice of the World' 60w speaker, it's basically a Celestion V30 modified by Orange for a tighter bottom end and more focused mids. I have an extension Celestion V30 loaded 4x12 cab, too. I just love the earth core shattering of a combined 6x12 rig... But then, I'm a Drone, Stoner, Doom and Gloom player. :P Keep up the great work. :)

Every time I come back to this excellent video I'm reminded of two things... First, when it comes to high wattage Celestions, the Redback destroys the K100 in this shootout and Second... I love the M65 Creamback. This is a great representation of what it can do. I've got one and it metals! Redbacks coming soon.
awesome review !! i really want a redback now ^^ ... btw. the heatproblem also comes from it frequency response. would it be just a subwoofer the membran would move much more and therefore cool the speaker more ... but since it is optimised for mids the membrane does not move as much so cooling by membrane movement does not work as much

What a rad vid this is! Question: would a 15-17 watt amp as the PRS MT15 or the EVH LBX be enough to push a couple of redback?
Yes but low wattage amps won't push the speaker so you get a more sterile sound (like when he's got the Peavey on 1). Having a high watt speaker doesn't diminish the power of your amp. People in rock like to push a speaker to get a "broken up" tone, but in jazz or metal etc sometimes you want a more sturdy, controlled sound where the speaker isn't jumping from the power.

Great video, well done! I prefer the sound of the V30 - maybe because I'm so used to it... That 75W Creamback on it's own sounded like Pantera IMO, awesome. There is something in the Redback I don't like. Think it's that thin line of very fine grain (or sandpaper) I don't want to hear. Again, great video. Subbed!

Yes it reminded me of a vintage 30 sound... At 90 watts I guess. Wasn't for me. I dig on the evm12l tone.. Fame has a 90 watt speaker that sounds very good to me.

Well, I really didn't like the Redbacks much. Something about them was not right to me when distorted. The cleans were nice, but after that there was something off to me about them. I did find out I really like the Vintage 30's and the Creamback G12H that really stood out to me that handled the lows, mids, and highs very nicely. I might have to put one of each n my 2X12 next month. Thanks for the review. It really helped me make my choice. Lets just hope they sound as great in a Marshall 2X12 cabinet.
Im building an oversized vertical 2x12 (100x64x40cm) from hardwood plywood and I'd like to mix this speaker with the 15" fullback, what do you think?
I purchased and put in my Peavy PAG 120 ( 200wt).I realized today we all mic and don't need this power on stage like they did in the 70's. Well, It doesn't have low end dynamics in the average usable range. Maybe at 150 watts it will push it and get to pumping. My Victory amp with Celestion creamback 65 16 ohm (15w/40watt) has a ton of more usable tone . The Peavy was just returned from the factory for a complete go through re tubed etc. So its time to find the correct combo, but at this try it did not perform like I was hoping.NO knocks on the speaker , its just my application and my desired sounds.
The biggest thing I took away from this is how much I dislike the G12M-65 Creamback. It sounds *awful*. The G12M-75 Creamback is slightly better, but both pale in comparison to the Vintage 30 (what I currently play). The Redback, by comparison sounds oddly flat, but maybe not in a bad way. I think it would probably make a good driver for a modelling amp or IR cab simulator. The biggest surprise to me, however, was the G12K-100, which I don't think I've ever heard before. There's a definite scoop to the midrange response, there. Sounds like a great "solo in the living room" driver, but might be a bit weak in ensemble playing.
I'd love to hear how these speakers compare with the AlNiCo Cream, which is, I think, my favorite of them all. The Vintage 30 was actually specifically designed to replicate as closely as possible the AlNiCo Blue with a higher power handling in a ceramic magnet. It comes very close, but the AlNiCo Cream is closer. I rate the Blue #1, the Cream #2, and the Vintage 30 #3.
I had a red knob twin, the amp was dreadful but the speakers sounded wonderfull, big smooth Bass crystal highs and a scooped middle

How does this one compare to the g12b150 that came in marshalls 1912 1x12 cab?... Worth and update or much the same?
I think my favorite is the G12H-75 overall.. But I like the low end of the red back and the high mids of the Vintage 30. So we could make a 212 with these speaker, micing the rear of the redback + the center ''off axis'' of a v30, and blend them in the mix. That would sound awesome dude.
I’ve got a Mesa/Boogie Mark IV and a Mesa DC-5 (the DC is the same preamp as the Dual Rectifier...or so Mesa says anyways) I’m curious as to weather a Red Back would bring more clarity, thump, and tighten the DC-5 to stand against the Mark IV? I really like the G12H-75 and Eminence CV-75 for the Mark IV and wanted another-speaker combo to keep up with the Mark IV for the DC-5.
Hi Gareth! I’m not sure the Redback would give you clarity, it’s more of a low baritone voice to the speaker, good to match with a slightly strident bright amp- maybe a V30 and Lynchback if you can find one would be a great combo?

I would like to have a Redback. Not sure if my 6505+ 112 Combo at 60 Watts is going to be suitable to push it though. Still, I love the Redback and may try it.
They would work wonderfully together! Don’t worry about the speakers power rating, that’s literally just a guide for how much power you can put through it before it sets fire. You’d get a bit more of a baritone growl from the amp. I’ve modded one of those combos and use the head in the studio, it’s great

I have a Peavey Windsor and whenever I look at your videos I just get a smile on my face because I got this damn thing for 190€! (~210$) What speakers would you recommend? Currently rocking G12t (I think 40 watts each, I'm reusing and old Marshall Valvestate 8240. Volume always at 0-1 haha)

You play the sound and then you talk and play the sound again and repeat. In the end, you repeat again all the sound together. IMO, it isn't nice. It breaks my concentration. Especially if you do comparison like this. For short explanation, you can give it with text while the sound is playing. For long explanation tell it before/after the sound test. In this way, my concentration doesn't jump between sound and your explanation.

Looks like a nice speaker. Thing is, I never cared much for Celestion's high power guitar speakers (though I can appreciate their high headroom characteristics) but damn their low watt speakers are fricking awesome sounding! The Greenback and the alnico Blue, while expensive as all hell, are hands down the best speakers I've ever used with my old Marshall tube half stacks! I even use the green in my Fender hotrod deville combo and it's just phenomenal at low or high volume levels!

+Preston Lasater that would be four red backs! Don't worry about the power handling limits, if it's your tone it should work nicely. Alternatives might be the Creamback H75 or M65

As much as I respect Celestion, I really can't say I liked the sound of any of these speakers.
However I did download your shootout track and after a moment of playing in DAW it appeared that the redback sounded the best when combined with another speaker.

The thing i have learned is some amps don't sound good unless they are cranked. With a 150W speaker you can dime those high powered amps without having to use a 4x12 speaker cabinet. This speaker is probably one of the best voiced speakers Celestion has to offer. Tight lows, detailed mids, and sweet highs make this speaker perfect for those high powered amps that sound like shit till they are cranked. Imagine putting 2 of these in a Fender Twin. You could turn your twin into a Dumble.

Interesting comparison, but I'm not sure how much of the sound difference is the power tubes working much harder vs. how much is the speaker running much harder. I personally run my Mesa Road King into a Marshall Power Brake set to zero output, then take the amp's aux out into stereo FX and a stereo power amp and back out the Road King's speakers. This setup is such that when the FX are off, I can't tell whether the speakers are direct from the Mesa or from the stereo amp. AND.... I find the differences you're showing around 13:40 are EXACTLY the kind of difference I hear with different levels of power tube gain. This would back up reading I've done (that I don't take as gospel) that speaker volume simply has no effect on their tone. There **IS** no subtle non-linearity, say some sources. I'd suggest to repeat your test with 1) test tone, such as a sawtooth from a synth, 2) a transistor amp, and 3) record your mic'd speaker at a range of volumes from 0.1 to 10. Use Audacity's nice harmonic analysis view and see if you can see ANY changes after correcting for volume. I may be wrong but my hunch is, no.
One of the reasons for having a higher wattage speaker now days is the fact that some players use a lot of effects with a huge low end. Massive fuzzes, octavers, synth pedals etc.
How is higher wattage going to help with that. If a speaker isn't designed to work in a specific frequency range and that is where you use it you may be in for a new set of speakers much sooner, eg if you play a base with guitar speakers very much you will ruin them. You can have a speaker that is low watt but designed for base and it will be fine, as long as you don't get too loud.
@SaintFredrocks Generally though changing things to suit a bigger wattage (heavy magnets, stronger glues, cones design etc) gives you more low end and more headroom (which low end takes up a lot of). Of course this is dependent on design and high wattage doesnt mean more con excursion. People also need huge headroom amps for those huge low end sound so then you need speakers that can handle this.

Might be worth noting that as the master volume is increased, the speaker will begin to distort more, but so will the power section of the amp. Point being, the audible increase in distortion is not solely coming from the speaker.

One sad thing about the loud single-speaker systems is that a 2 or 4 speaker system gives each ear different constructive and destructive interference from the phasing. (Due to the exact distance from speaker to ear, divided by wavelengths of the sounds.) On a recording a single speaker may sound better without any interference. But live, I'd guess multiple speakers always sound better.
You don’t stick your head in between the speakers, they’re so close together as to act as a single unit. If they weren’t, you’d suffer from terrible comb filtering depending on where you moved to. The ideal sound comes from a point source, or at least a line- that’s why modern PA systems have moved from large walls of speakers to line arrays
So two of these in a Zilla cab would be ok with a Blackstar HT Stage 100w head?
Yeah as long as you match the impedance to the head (the HTs are quite good for this if I remember). They are a little dark so I’d ease off on the bass control, but they should match well
I REALLY LIKE YOUR DEMOS ONE GOOD IDEA WOULD BE TO HAVE A LIGHT SHINING ON THE SPEAKER CONE AS YOU PLAY AND TEST AND TURN UP THE VOLUME SO WE CAN SEE HOW MUCH THE CONE MOVES WITH DIFFRENT TONES AND POWER.

I don't understand one thing. If I have a 100 W head, then I just turn the volume to 3 (on a scale of 0 - 10). Does the amp still use all of its power ?? Or does it use less than 100 W ?? Sorry if I get all the technical term wrong. I'm not familiar with electrical stuff.
No, the rating of an amplifier is roughly the maximum power available (so you'd have to have it on full volume all the time to be using 100W). The reason people use higher wattage heads is if they don't want the power section to distort so much at a reasonable volume - either for a more punchy tone, or so you can get more volume out of the amp without it turning into a fuzzy sound
Just to build on this, a lot of amp manufacturers rate their amps on CLEAN wattage, such as Matamp. The Matamp GT1 is rated at 100W (it's maximum clean wattage), but puts out 170W when fully cranked.

Sure, it’s all about the sound rather than the power handling. Do you want a speaker that’s got a deep gutsy sound? This might be exactly what you want
You could use it but I think it would be unnessesary and not be the best sound since you'll have way to much speaker headroom. In other words don't do it. But to each is own, I just think you'd be disappointed.
I'm curious as to how you think it sounds compared to a GH12H30 at lower volumes.

The Vintage 30 didn't get its name from sounding like a G12H-30. They don't really sound very much alike at all. It got its name because it has a 30 cm diameter

Yeh there were a few high powered speakers back then, but they really did compromise on tone in my opinion. And like you say I couldn’t cover them all without sending people to sleep!

Be fair, 100W is a very general ballpark figure given for the layman, the actual power depends on a huge number of factors including plate voltage and bias, both of which can be different from one “100W” head to the next. Having said that, the same can be said for the speaker where the power rating is more of a general guideline for matching the right power stage to the right number/configuration of speakers. I’ve run a 25W speaker with a 100W head before with no issues, as long as it’s for fairly short bursts so the speaker doesn’t get so hot as to catch fire

Sounds beasty. Yeah for 15” for guitar I’d recommend the Fullback, it’s got a growly baritone voicing that would compliment quite well in doom.

Why did you forget the Celestion G12H-100, a superior speaker to the G12K-100. There were 4 x 12 cabs with this speaker rated at 400W. But that was back in the 80s and you´re to young to remember. By the way: AC/DC used this cabs.
Forget? It’s not made anymore so it’s largely pointless to throw in. My age is irrelevant, I’m a collector with cabs and speakers going back to the early 70s (60s cabs are usually either beyond repair or beyond affordability). The K100 is still in production

The speaker sounds that is on pain. 120 watt head can go well beyond 150watt when changed. Most amps rated at 100watt mean 100watt before the power section starts distorting.
+Myself6M I don't know where you got that idea from, it's the maximum power rating, not before distortion. And the sound at full volume is the EL34 tubes being driven, typical Marshall type sound
Well, it depends on the manufacturer. Traditionally, Marshall labels the 100watt Plexi heads in terms of the wattage the amp can supply clean, before the amp goes non linear. So a lot of 100 watt Plexi heads give 150 watts or more when fully ranked depending on the model and year. I am strictly referring on the power amp clean headroom and distortion. A lot of British manufacturers like, Marshall, Vox, Orange, Hiwatt, still use the same principle. This is why their are often described as incredible loud. This is how the rule of thumb that the cabinet has to be twice the heads wattage arouse. Other American manufacturers don't stick to that. But, I may have exaggerated in my comment. What I meant is that IMHO, the speaker sounded quite a bit distorted when you cranked the amp. I may be wrong though!
By the way. I never tried the redback. May I ask what do you think of it? How does it compare to the creamback H and v30. I am looking for a high power speaker in order to run a 50watt rockerverb in a 1x12 ported cab. In general I like the speakers staying tight in high gain, but I also like good clean and nice British crunch.
This is partially correct. Amps, just like speakers, are rated at the level they can reliably handle long term. Just like speakers that can handle higher spikes, amps are known to spike above their rated wattage. It's not uncommon for a 100w Marshall to spike up to 170. This is why people with 100w 1x12s blow speakers. A 100w amp with 150W speaker should be safe provided the speaker can handle the spikes. A 120w amp SHOULD still be alright as well consider a 150w speaker should be able to take spikes up to a little over 200w if its of good design and construction.
That being said, it doesn't have anything to do with the level the power amp starts distorting, that is a completely separate discussion.
A typical Marshall 100 watt RMS amp puts out about 180 to 200 watts peak. This is common knowledge. That is why the rule of thumb is that if you have a 100 watt (valve) amp, you should have double that figure of power handling capability on the speaker side. In other words if you want to run a 100 watt amp on Full volume (!!) then you need 200 watts of power handling, speakerwise, to be "safe". Ask Marshall, Ask Celestion.

The only way to really know how much power or "wattage" the amp is pushing into the speaker is with a scope or some sort of tool... you may not be doing much more than 80 wats... or you may actually be surpassing 120 especially with distortion. Remember its 120 watts RMS... however the amp can and will peak out much much higher... and that is usually what blows speakers.
I disagree about the peaks blowing speakers (having interviewed the guys at Celestion and heard this first hand) - what blows speakers is usually excessive heat burning the voice coils until the insulators on the copper wire melt. This can only happen under sustained loads where the heat has no time to escape- and as such only happens under prolonged RMS loads. Improvements in materials are what have led to speakers having high power ratings- they can get hot and not suffer from failures until much higher temperatures, which a guitar amp is simply unable to produce. Unless a peak signal is a huuuuuge spike (like a DC offset signal) then the speaker will bend and buckle first, which is what makes vintage design speakers have a softer sound with less transient coming through

As long as your lowest rated speaker times number is speakers is equal or greater than your amp's rating than you're good. For example a 25 watt Greenback and a 65 watt Creamback in a 212 can handle a 50 watt amp.
Overloading amp is good, overloading guitar speaker is OK, overloding mics is a crime!

+kikster93 nah they've made loads. They've got the biggest r&d department of any guitar speaker maker. For me though, it was always a compromise until very recently- the power handling would change the tone (for better or worse)- now it's very close to the classic greenback-ish tone but with all the power benefits
