- The Celestion Redback is a relatively new speaker, designed to be capable of higher power ratings but sound musical at the same time... We think this speakers has a lot more applications in it that just high power setups, so here Joe looks into how the speakers acts with different amps, guitars and playing styles.
Please let us know what you think. If you have any suggestions please let us know, if you've used the G12-65's before tell us how you got on.

I used to overlook the Redback as some niche speaker that only were meant for use in live situations or whatever, but the first time I played one I was quite honestly shocked how good it sounds. Really good rock and metal speaker.
I come back to this video every few months ❤
glad you like it mate.
Sounds fantastic. Celestion have really hit it out of the park in recent times with the higher wattage stuff - the Redback and the Cream Alnico.
Yeah they have, I've always liked the Redback but I seem to like it more the more I play it.
Hey for a 100 w clean amp like the two rock tc you think I would like an ev, a redback, an alnico cream or something else better?
@@joshua0226not alnico cream (90 watts)
I've been gigging with a redback and an old g12h 100 in an open back 2x12 cab for about 5 years. I love the sound, no harsh top end and stays tight whatever you throw at it from big cleans to overdrive and fuzz face through loud laney or Marshall 50 or 100 watt heads. Always a consistent sound at whatever volume unlike some of the lower power speakers like v30, g12 65, t75 I used in that situation before.
I loaded four Redbacks into an early 70's Marshall slant. I used my Randall Thrasher, and EVH 5150III, sounded amazing, the bottom end was so brutal I had to caulk the cab to kill the fart vibrations!
It’s great that you played a bunch of styles with it. I’m a jazz-fusion-funk-blues guy, and you definitely covered a lot of ground sonically for out gang. Thanks
It sounds glorious, really unrestricted and breathing to my ear :-)
Thanks Christian. It is a great speaker... it seems to get better every time I hear it.
It is great.
Seems like a very good speaker, I like what I hear! And you're such a versatile player, it means a lot when you do a play-through like this.
Yeah Joe is good. The redback is a really cool speaker there is so many directions it can be pushed in. Thanks for watching.
I use these and a alnico cream, in both my 2x12 cabs 🤘🏻
I've become a pretty big fan of the Redback's. I put 2 of them in my Rivera KS312 cab and they sound amazing. Been a long time use of G12K-100's so having that high headroom and full bottom end is important for my sound. What I love about the Redbacks is that Crunch they bring back to my sound that isn't over bearing.
That's really cool especially as you went to them from a K100. What kind of stuff do you play?
@@ZillaCabs Primarily metal (Baritone or 7 strings in B, A# or A) but I did play in a skate punk band for a bunch of years as well.
@@jeremywebster82 Cool, we're finding the redback is working great for that kind of stuff. Nice to know they are working for you.
Had one for one week brand new. Fantastic speaker. Celestion produces another classic.
It is great isn't it... sounds better with age too.
I have the Celestion Redback. I really like it. I had it in my Peavey 6505+ combo and it sounded great. I now have it in a separate 1-12 cabinet (Peavey 1-12) that originally had a blue Marvil and it changed the sound. It now has a really high Shrilly spike to the frequency high gain. Same tone but the added high buzz. I tried a REVV head, PRS head and Carvin Head all had the buzz. Now i will try a different cab to put it in and see if it fixes it or back in the 6505 it goes were it sounded great. I found out cabs make a big difference in tone.
oh yeah, the cab does make a big difference. I hope the issues sorts itself out.
How did the cab/speaker process go?
@@passionplayer7 I left it in the peavey single 12 cab. for now. I have my other carvin single 12 cab with the eminence dv77 speaker in it. When I use them together, they pair pretty good.
Other than the soft box reflection on the guitar, this video was amazing. I love the lighting, the prop placement, the dude and his outfit, and the tone. Well done. And 4K!
Thanks for the demo! I'm leaning towards the redback for sure!
The 1st gig coming up on the 19th June and dyeing to use my 1x12 fatbaby 150w celestion.
Excellent! Good to hear people are starting to have gigs come in.
Fantastic play-through and killer Daemoness V!!! The Redback has definitely been of interest since I heard some videos of a KSR played through them. The combination of frequencies and voicing is darker to me and that is very appealing!
Thanks. It is a great speaker. I'm glad you enjoyed the speaker
The Redback is a serious speaker. Still Celestion flavoured, with that 3-D crunch we associate with Greenbacks and V30s, but toned down a bit for more and deeper low end response, with less of those high mids that some people find a bit harsh. I really love the one I have in a 2x12. Right now I'm trying to decide which speaker to pair it with that still retains the beefy-ness without being overpowered or become overpowering. The goal is to have a pair that sounds awesome in the room as well as diverse when mic'ed. If it wasn't a studio cab I'd just get another Redback and call it a day. I tried pairing it with the Creamback 75, but even though they're both rated at 100dB, the Creamback was louder due to its more prominent mids, which I thought were too much with my amp of choice, the ENGL Blackmore. The V30 was even worst in that regard. In the past I've had great experiences with the Heritage 65 that you guys have demo'd recently, but rated at 97dB it would probably be drowned by the Redback. Also, I tend not to mix speakers with different sized dust caps (the Creamback was an exception) as they are have a different way of spreading out the higher frequencies, making the pair sound even more unbalanced as you walk around the room and making it difficult to dial the amp for both speakers. That's why I'm not an x-pattern guy with 4x12s. Do you guys have any suggestion?
This is a really interesting one. Have you considered the H heritage? Do you have any particular requirements on power?
Neo Copperback maybe?
Im worried about you guys, you need to purchase a heater or something.
haha we need an AC now it's frigging boiling ;)
hahaa
my zilla fatbaby cab redback1x150w speaker sounds great with my blackspirit 200 thanks lads paul
It was a nice cab, I'm glad you like it Paul.
great demo helped me alot
Man that. red back is the best sounding "green back" demo yet.....
Do you prefer it to the greenback? I think if you didn't know it had a 150 watt rating you wouldn't never guess that.
Na its very different from most greenbacks. Much fuller and more low end
Awesome, I gotta get one for my Katana 100 Mk2 now.
let us know how you getone. Just measure up and make sure it fits in there alright first.
2x12 closed back with stiletto trident. Cuts without beeing to sharp, and moves enough air without getting boomy.
Next amp I'll get is a Framus Dragon, that amp reacts like day and night to different speakers.
Some time ago I used it with Celestion Neodyms, Jensen Neodym, V30, greenbacks, creambacks, Sheffield and so on. We will see how it works with the Redbacks.
We have a Trident here, the Stiletto amps are one of my favourite amps, I just love them.
I’ve actually been hunting a dark speaker like this to match with a Stiletto (amp can be super piercing). Glad to hear these sound good with them. Stiletto is a great amp in the right hands. Curious though about the A types as well though any thoughts?
Sounds great!!
I’m think of replacing the H Creamback 75 with this. I’m finding the H75 too bright and scooped on a Hotrod deluxe?
How would this one combine with a Fullback in a huge 2x12/15?
Love the cleans wow
The Fullback sound cool with the redback, it also mixes well with the V30 too. We recently made a cab to do this and I loved it, I think we will try and make a video where we mix a load of speakers with the fullback and see what happens.
@@ZillaCabs lets goooo, would love to hear it
You are a brilliant guitarist Joe. Have you time to do some RUclips lessons? I'd love to learn a few of your licks!
im going to order the fat baby cab with the redback 150
Great, let us know if you have any questions.
Great overview of this speaker. How would you say it compares to a classic lead 80?
Thanks, I'm glad you like it. The CL80 is a tad more articulate but they are both pretty clean speakers... the redback more so that the CL80. We actually did a head to head between these two speakers but never released it for some reason..... we should get it out there.
@@ZillaCabsPlease do so, would love to see it!!
How would you say this compare to the G12B150 that Marshall used in the 1912 for years? Would it be wroth it to upgrade or are they close?
Hi. Great video. Wondering if you paired the Redback with an Alnico Cream in an open back 212? I currently replaced one of the speakers in my Two Rock 212 cab with the Alnico Cream. I was going to go with another or a Redback. I play all genres of music so hoping to achieve a well balanced blend for this. Many thanks.
Hi Reggie, I see no reason why it wouldn't sound great, it has sounded great in just about every combination and situation we have used it in. I can't say I remember ever mixing it with an alnico cream but I think it should sound great. The alnico cream sounds great with a H creamback and that isn't all that far away tonally from a redback.
@@ZillaCabs I've gone with 2 Alnico creams......amazing!!!!!
Nice review guy..! What's the best 2X12 Combination together with Redback in your view? Greenback, Creamback or even Alnica Cream... Now I have Redback in 1X12 Closeback cab... Love it. And thinking about upgrade to 2X12 to add more charmy midhigh - high frequency.
Oooh that's a good question. In all honesty we haven't used the redback much for mixing as it is often used by itself. We did use one with a H creamback a while back and that sounded really cool.... two slightly different slants on what is quite a similar sound.... I think there is a video in this!
Thank you for the info :-)
Mix it with a Eminencce Governer.!
H75 Creamback.
Would this make sense in a 1x12 cab to take on a 100W Mesa Badlander? I will be feeding the house mix with the IR output so this is only for stage monitoring, but I'd like the tone to be closeish to the IR used (Mesa 412).
Yeah I think that would be a good choice. It is still a very musical sounding speaker, and it is probably the highest powered speaker that I think covers that many bases.
Think I'll put the RB in my fender mustang
I bought a compact 1x12 from zilla loaded with a greenback, can I ask you guys.....if i wanted to fit a redback to it, is the spkr removed from the back of the cab or does the front detach with the baffle ?
Always good to hear people using our cabs. Nearly all of our cabs are rear mounted so it should just fit right in. If you are getting the speaker as a direct replacement and are in Europe we can still sell them at the usual subsidised rate.
I have a silicone sealed oversized 4x12 but it comes with legends and they´re really dark... Do you guys think it will be a good idea to load it with redbacks? 4x12 oversized redbacks and silicone sealed :D I want it for my studio
You guys tend to pick speakers I like. So im wanting to replace my hot 100 with a lighter speaker. I wanted a neo creamback but my amp seems to only work with 4 ohms. What would you go for that can be had in the 4 ohm range? I was looking at a Jensen (they seem to have a few 4 ohm) they have a neo tornado jet. I can't really go out n just hear stuff right now
Hi Jacob, I take it you have a 1x12. I would say something from the Jensen range would be a good shout, or take a look on ebay for a special order4 ohm speaker, the sometimes pop up. Jenses do make quite a few 4ohm speakers and have some more modern sounding speakers.
@@ZillaCabs I ended up going for a Wgs (warehouse guitar speakers) et65 I think it will complement my 6l6 amp. When you order off their web page you can choose 4 8 or 16 ohm on all their models
CLOSED BACK!!!!! ;)
You prefer the closed back? I probably do too, but there is a nice ambience in the room with the openback. Thanks for watching.
Are the cabinets closed back
I’m shocked that it’s rated at 150 watts and sounds like a 30 watt speaker!
It does act like a high powered speaker but I think the thing that a lot of us like is that unlike a lot of high powered speakers it is still quite musical with the guitar. Thanks for watching.
is this speaker close to heritage g12h30 watt 75 hz
Not really, the anniversary has quite a bit more bite, a bit more in the top end and breaks up a lot easier This is more like the H creamback I would say, but more clinical.
@@ZillaCabs thank you for the answer
How do these compare to the g12-65 at normal volumes? Much darker? My strat has cs69s and is bright, but my sg is a little darker.
Hi Lance, the G12-65s are a tad brighter I would say. I love the 65s with a strat though, it is one of my favourite speakers in an openback format with a strat. The Redbacks are a tad darker but they are both really nice speakers. What kind of music do you play?
Blues and classic rock mostly, but I'll dig into some 80s hard rock/metal, too. I love the fender bright chime, but have a be-od deluxe for british gain (the best). I boost the mids from that pedal now, dont want to get muddy.
Which speaker would be best for country and surf and lots of clean headroom
HEAVILY considering getting a Redback for my 2x12. Any suggestions for what to pair it with? I run a 120 watt head and do everything from crystal cleans and fx -heavy ambience, to high gain chugs and leads. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks!
v30 or G12m-65
G12K-100
I'd love to hear a comparison with the redback and an old g12h 100, and maybe the 12h75 creamback.
I had a set of H100's in an old Marshall cab back in the day. They are great speakers. I was trying to get hold of a set a few months back but the deal fell through...... I'm working on it though. Thanks for watching.
@@ZillaCabs Thank you.
Curious how this would pair with an Eminence Legend EM12/EVM 12L
That's a good call. If we get one in the workshop I will make sure we record that. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@ZillaCabs if I get a chance to beforehand I'll make a clip and post it.
I have this combo and it's glorious!
@@thecajunspoon2855 with which one the EVM or the Eminence clone?
Redback and Eminence Tonker are very very similar
Hey guys, can you share your Stiletto settings for these recordings?
Ooh I honestly can't remember what they were. I take it you are a fellow Stiletto user too, they are amazing amps, I love them.
@@ZillaCabs yes! They are amazing and I've been using one for about 10 years. Very unfairly panned on the internet. I think Mesa would still be selling them had they paired them with a better speaker/cab. I don't care much for the Stiletto with V30 and/or Recto cab. Even the Mesa C90 is a much better speaker. I love the Redback. Running one in a semi-open 1x12 with my Dual Rec and Roadster heads. It's perfect and not gonna blow it at full power.
@@1974zah it is one of my favourite amps... I do like a Marshall though and I'm too lazy to spend the time working most Mesas, so the Stiletto was perfect for me.
@@ZillaCabs most Boogies do take some dialing in. The Stiletto is mostly set and forget.
@@ZillaCabs do you guys do a 1x12 that's wide enough to sit under a Stiletto?
Is there a big difference between the 8ohm and 16ohm speaker? I have to replace my redback in my 68’ CDR. I love it but my original redback got voice coil issues. Want to switch it with a 16ohm redback.
