Excellent video of a difficult topic. It's almost a taboo amongst gacha players, if you try to discuss this with them you're almost sure to receive major backlash. I guess it's hard to see reason if you're stuck in deep. I just dropped my gachas and returned to indie single player games I bought from steam with a few bucks. First game sessions actually felt weird because I was constantly surprised that I got new characters and stuff for FREE and didn't have to gamble for them. Yes, it's insane and I'm glad I broke free of the gacha spell.

Curiously enough, Granblue Fantasy Relink just released a couple weeks ago and guess what, it's pretty much a gacha game without the gacha (you buy the game, you get the game, and that's it). The combat and endgame is tons of fun, you unlock all the characters by playing it and progression is completely paced by the player, instead of resin bullshit. This game, at least to me, completely buries the mental gymnastics gacha players do to justify its existence.

    • @syntheticat24
      @syntheticat24 2 месяца назад +4

      @paledrake Actually, it's worse at a casino
With casinos, people will spend their winnings and come out with nothing, meaning they lost money when they could've won, casinos can be even worse in some cases.
Also, is it really different from gaming as a whole, the second a game with in-game cosmetics shuts down, all of that is gone, if a game that had DLC like old cod games which is a perfect example, shut down or got overran with hackers, it's no different.
Blaming gacha games just because they seem predatory, doesn't mean the other games aren't bad too.
Plus, every game takes immense hours away from people's life.
It's for fun, people play games for fun, so what's the problem with one, when they all have the same problem. Free to Play games while playing F2P is the only way to not lose anything but time.

@@syntheticat24 My gripe is that this is designed to make as much profit as possible. Call me old school but I like having a full product and not expected to return back and buy the same product just so I can get that one thing they deliberatley remove in order to gain maximum income. To me, that's a scam. The problem is that many game companies look at gacha and see it as a means to make more profit, so a company would deliberatley go out of their way to shoe horn such a model into their game(look how quick they were to implement NFTs and downplay it the moment they got flak for it). And the more prevelant it is the more encouraging it will be for them to implement it. Because you'd be the one missing out for not implementing such a money making mechanic. I've played previous game by moon studios but their recent entry has been somewhat a red flag. Not the worst form of gacha, I would say it's somewhat mild but the incentive was clearly there. I also do not support gambling. I personaly cosnider it a waste of money at best, harmful and predatory at worst. Only reason casino or gambling in general does not become illegal is due to market. If you ban something, that something will grow in value. There are people with gambling addictions and these companies know it, and they will exploit it cause there's a market for it. And addiction is a chronic mental health disorder.

Just to add aside from me having the same feelings towards gacha games like you, just by it being a gacha game by itself, the gameplay and mechanics are bound to the "gacha" elements/ mechanic such as the energy, gacha/ fomo elements, characters and abilities etc.
While I find gacha games with more simple mechanics (like FGO, Blue Archive, Uma Musume and more) slightly more acceptable than those trying to implement more and more gameplay mechanics such as Open-World, Character/ Player progression, gameplay mechanics, abilities etc (like Genshin Impact & Other Mihoyo Games, HSR is a poor excuse of a turn based game ngl, PGR, WuWa and more) I gave some a shot and always end up finding the same faults in game design which makes it worse by the gacha elements which ends up just making it shallow, and find it predatory as a game. Sure, those games look good visually but as a game itself, they're not.
I would definitely say that if those gacha games aren't gacha to begin with and as a proper game, I would definitely love play them and probably love them even.

Used to play this game called "final fable" way back when by IGG. This was around 2015. I thought spending 70 bucks on this game was obscene for some "loot type" system characters. Boy was I wrong. Interestingly enough IGG rug pulled the game from the app store shortly after its launch likely because they realized they could get even stupider with the pull rates on a more traditional gacha format. Its insane how almost every "mythic (generic title here)" gacha follows the same format almost cut and past and most got it from that game "final fable" which has been reused since at least 2015. Almost as ridiculous as a new NBA 2k game every year

I'm a gacha game player, but I 100% agree with you.
alot of gacha games don't even specify that they're gacha games, and this is a problem.
for example, I got into Genshin bc of the aesthetics and the story seemed interesting, I didn't know I was gonna get sucked into the gacha rabbithole...
now I don't really like the direction the story is taking, just a bunch of depressing crap for no reason.
I feel like there has to be a reason behind that, and it seems like it could be connected to the fact most of these gacha games hire psychologists to make their games addicting...
not only do they make the characters' design overly s*xual, they also give them sad backstories to make you feel for them.
and they have recently been overusing that for a good while now that it doesn't work on me anymore, but it still does for plenty of people surprisingly...
now the only reason I still play Genshin is bc of one of my favourite characters, Lyney.
when a character is the reason you're still playing a game, that means you're doing smth wrong.
ah well, thank you for listening to my rant.

1:57 Fire Emblem Heroes. Yeah I seen it release, after that Super Mario Run. I was interested, took a closer look and... quit right away. Because basically the game uses the worst RPG mechanic I remember from World of Warcraft, in which I ran an old Raid, killed one boss that has 10 drops and each time he drops 2 items out of 10. I managed to have to run that Raid over 30 times before I seen the item I wanted drop once. That is how "random" works, despite our brain telling us that 2 out of 10 should not be that "hard" to see each item after 10 runs once. The truth is in true RNG you can kill that Boss 100 times and never see one particular item once.
But then you need to remember... in computer there is no true RNG. You can manipulate it, turn one knob and the top price never gets paid out, simple as that. That is why going to Las Vegas to those computerized slot machines is a scam, the same it is with many other machines that have some price payout or prize tickets.
They are all NOT TRUE RANDOM like flipping a coin or mixing cards and playing a round of poker.

I also find it infuriating that somehow gacha had managed to infiltrate pure single player games, like in Xenoblade 2 where you need luck just to ‘pull’ a useful blade.

Honestly i love and hate gacha games at the same time.
Why i love it?because surprisingly many gacha games are really good to play that AAA games this time(better than *cough* ubisoft ultimate meh edition) with battlepass.
and you don't need to spend the money if you want(still you need to spend your "dedication" and "time" more than p2w player).
But i hate it because it's more addicting than offline games(why i'm wasting my time and taking less to sleep just to farm material in gacha games)
Let's give an example : Total price 80 pulls for genshin impact is 70$(atleast that's from my country)
and you can lose 50/50 at the first time if you're not lucky.
There's some battlepass and subscription too but kinda "meh" still i don't like that one.
That's why i love offline games more even i just can play older games without any type of "gacha" system.
I would rather spend hundred of dollar for buying offline older games than spend to any gacha games again.
I recently uninstalled Gacha Game like Genshin Impact,Wuthering Waves and Honkai Star Rail because it's kinda too much addictiong for me,even there's "important" event like Wuthering Waves they try to increase the playerbase with massive event in this patch and "free" character but seriously i'm tired man,i want to stop the addiction rn.
Sorry for my bad english, but seriously i'm tired of gacha games.

Gacha games are junk food. None excel at gameplay, theres always a single player option with better gameplay to replace it. The sole exception seems to be Nikke.

    Gamedev here!
I have a special heavy dislike for gacha “games” because most of these *barely are a “”game””*.
    Let me explain:
    From my small experiences on Arknights and Blue Archive, you just stare at the screen, press some optional buttons and wait for the best, that’s Not gameplay for me (specially Blue Archive, the anime girls just shoots, cover up, run and all without any participation form the player but just to see), also a lot of these games are either text walls or cinematics and as for me;
If I want to read something: I can read Raptor Red or Jurassic Park (novel).
If I want to watch something: I can watch any Godzilla film.
I recently installed and uninstalled Blue Archive, while I was “”playing””, I started to miss Helldivers 2 way more and made me appreciate Skyrim and other indie games (Anger Foot), I quitted Blue Archive and came back to Helldivers, and guess what?: I had a blast.
I call it a happy ending for democracy.
(Also Plants vs Zombies is the best tower defense).
Take in mind that I’m more into fast-paced frenetic action (any Doom game, Dusk and Ultrakill) than most mobile games (I do have some on my phone but they’re mostly for killing time, ultra casual ones), also I like Skyrim and Minecraft (been playing MC since 2011) because: every session is a new adventure and I make a new memory, gacha “games”, with the FOMO, limit events and daily rewards feels more like a burden chore than make a new memory.
With that and other things (don’t get me started on how some gachas allows you to marry the girls), I tend to say:
“Gacha ‘games’ are a betrayal to what games are.”

I agree with most of this video, however I still dont consider them gambling. Gambling to me means a chance of a monetary payout. You cant "cash out" it a gatcha game.

It's still gambling, your rolling a chance to get a certain thing that you want.

Nah, People are free to make their own choices, While I do agree they absolutely have brought down the quality of games in general, Banning them isn't the right choice.

    • @syntheticat24

@theremix54 I actually disagree, the quality of games went down on their own.
And it isn't Gacha games at fault.
It's the companies running games like CoD.
You have EA and Epic games who are also unreasonably greedy, it's the industry itself.
