Today I'm painting a beginner friendly loose landscape using a limited palette, indigo, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson and yellow ochre. The idea is to try to let go and paint a wet in wet sky as loosely as possible, aiming for plenty of subtle drama, with a hanging wood on a hillside, gate and fence, loosely painted and kept really simple. It looks challenging, but it is a simple and exciting process that will probably take a bit of practice, but is really useful for getting beginners used to the way water and paint can flow on the page, and using rich paint to obtain balanced tonal values with plenty of darks, while keeping things fresh and light.
I'm using Saunders Waterford 100% cotton cold pressed 140lb/300g weight paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I use various brushes as demonstrated in the video, but use whichever brushes you have. Развлечения
Wonderfully atmospheric.
finally i “got it” ! a loose wet wash & i couldnt be happier!! TY SO MUCH for sharing your talent!
Wonderful piece, the red brings a wonderful illusion of evening warmth and adding the fence rails really put it together for me! I am very privileged to be able to do this in “my Kitchen”! Thank you, Karen Dirmish
Thanks so much Karen! 💐🎨
Beautiful. Thank you!
Ooh, that's lovely! Thank you...
Thanks so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it! 🎨💐
Brilliant use of the drip! Didn't see it as a fence post until you transformed it. Embrace the unpredictable! Very thoughtfully depicted birds, too.
Thank you so much! 😊
Well, this is certainly my cup of tea!!! Magnificent!
Thanks so much Killeen ☕️☕️
❤ Hi Lois, you are my favourite watercolour artist on U-tube! I love your style and the different flavours that you do! You are an awesome teacher…step by step! Thankyou for sharing your incredible gift with us… ❤
I've always shied away from alizarin crimson because it's not colorfast but the beauty of the color is saying to break down and get it anyway. Love how it interacts with the indigo and yellow ochre!
However these days most Alizarin reds are substitutes, you need to look at the pigment number and avoid genuine alizarin reds if the lightfast issue concerns you. My Cotman AC is PR 206, a fully lightfast quinacridone red pigment synthesised to imitate AC
Lois. Thank you. That was fantastic. I'm going to try this! You paint with "no" judgement! It frees the painter from being intimated and to enjoy the process. Especially for a beginner like me!🥰
This is certainly my cup of tea. I'm so desperate to develop a loose painting style. I watch a lot of your videos, but for some reason, I'm too afraid to actually try. You do make it look so easy.
Wonderful work, Lois! Winter landscapes are right around the corner again.
Really like the simplicity of this one. Love those “happy accidents.” Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic demo and explanation thank you Lois!
I just fell in love with your painting! Many thanks Lois! 🥰🥰🥰
You’re magical! And inspiring. Looking forward to trying this several times.
Thanks Delphine! 😊
Your paintings are magical. I look away for a second and suddenly a scene appears. I’ll try my sword liner for birds. Haven’t figured out the right brush yet.
Thanks Sue, birds are trickier than they look! 😊
@@LoisDavidsonArt what size is your painting table? I’m finally graduating from the kitchen table to a bedroom studio.

A handy tip...use heat of hair dryer to heat the tape and it will not rip the paper even if it is not cotton ..the heat softens the glue in the tsape if you heat the tape as you remove it. Thanks for your nk

Wow! Thank you for the video
Love it.
Excellent. Wet on wet is my fav and sometimes we get magical outcome however majority of the times it didn't work for me but who cares as far as I am having fun 🤩. Your video is very inspiring and loved the red color used boldly
Beautiful ❤️
Stunning work, Lois 👌👌👌 Though you call it semi-abstract, it is not difficult to
imagine a real world scenery like this. The red hue in an otherwise cloudy/misty atmosphere adds a sense of eerie excitement. And what can I say about the education that you impart in each video🙏
Thank you for an excellent video. Lovely!
Thanks Maggie 😊

Did you add the yellow ochre at the bottom?
Those look like URART brushes....I just ordered some! 😉 Beautiful results 😍
Hopefully they’ll be good! I’ve never heard of them! 🎨💐
@@LoisDavidsonArt he's an acrylic painter..
But gets amazing effects with these pointed brushes 😉
incredible art - I feel I can walk into your painting and experience an other worldly moment! The trouble is I wouldn't want to return to the real world with all its woes....
Me gusta mucho. saludos

Thanks Danielle! 😊
Another beautiful painting and excellent instruction. Can you tell me what material your board is? I want to get one but dont know what to get. Thank you .
I’m afraid my boards aren’t ideal for painting but they work for filming. I use cheap A3 canvas covered cardboard sheets designed for acrylic and oil painting. The warp a bit when wet but as I said, work well for filming
Beautiful painting what kind paper are you using I use arches cold press300mg 140lb
Thanks! I used Saunders Waterford cold pressed paper 😊
Great painting Lois.
Where may I ask, did you get your brush?
Thanks RT, I found it on Ebay a couple of years ago 😊
Where can you find that 3” brush? I’ve not found one so big like the one your using.
Thanks Donna, I purchased mine from Ebay a couple of years ago, so no idea where to get one these days, however, you can use any large wash brush
I got a big goathair from Frank Clarke, the Irish watercolourist.
Please tell me the paper and colours name
Did you say calligraphy brush? I don't understand. Caroline from NC
I did say calligraphy brush!
@@LoisDavidsonArt ok thanks I'll look it up.
