Today I'm painting a beginner friendly seascape with yachts using a limited palette: cobalt blue, Venice red and Davidson's grey from our handmade paint range, you can subsitute any brand of cobalt blue, light red or Venetian red and paynes grey if you don't have our paints. I started out by masking out the yacht sails with masking fluid to protect the white paper. The idea is to try to let go and paint a wet in wet sky as loosely as possible, aiming for plenty of subtle drama, then a sea glinting with sunlight painted mostly with dry brush, loosely painted and kept really simple. It looks challenging, but it is a simple and exciting process that will probably take a bit of practice, but is really useful for getting beginners used to the way water and paint can flow on the page, and using a few dark accents to obtain balanced tonal values with plenty of darks, while keeping things fresh and light.
I'm using Saunders Waterford 100% cotton cold pressed 140lb/300g weight paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I use various brushes as demonstrated in the video, but use whichever brushes you have.

Love the simplicity of your sailboats on sparkling water. Your hand is very steady, I am 75 and hands are shaky so I use a ruler. Love your pointy calligraphy brush.

    Lovely result 👏👏👏
That sky has a very Edward Seago feel to it and the sparkling water compliments it perfectly. I don’t think you mentioned it but the sails could be masked out with little triangles of masking tape if people don’t have masking fluid on hand. Thanks for sharing this one 🙏

Hi Lois while not a new watercolour painter I find I learn so much from your paintings for beginners, today it was to drag the body of the brush across the water for sparkles, I have been using the tip & could not work out why I couldn't achieve the result I wanted so thank you

I can’t wait to try this. I don’t have the nice Ron Ranson hake brush. However, I have several sizes of Goat hair hake brushes purchased at the Japanese dollar store, Daiso. One will hopefully work for this effect.

All the time, for every reasonably successful painting there’s probably at least 3 or 4 trial and error paintings, sometimes more!
