    Another reason I prefer daniel smith; you know, without even looking you know, you are going to get the most single pigment colors possible. Which means no mud. I'm so excited to hear your joy and can't wait to see more artworks from you.

      Thank you so much! And yes, I agree that, while there seems to be a few multi-pigment color, most I have looked at are single pigment. In terms of mixing, so far mixing for me has been a beautiful experience! These are such delicate and clear colors! No mud for sure! Thank you so much for sharing! ♥🍓

    Yeah, Daniel Smith are so far my overall favorite watercolors. I have a soft spot for independent and handmade artisan formulations but of all the large company professional watercolors, these are the bomb. I've really started to enjoy some of the Primatek colors.

      Hi Caroline! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts! I sure was not expecting liking Daniel Smith so much, since, I too am very curious about handmade colors! At this point, I am slowly but surely collecting some handmade brands, as well as large company brands to, well, compare and see where exactly I find myself most comfortable with. I do have some Primatek colors, and I cannot wait to try them, because now that I have experience granulation that really stands out, I want to try those soon as possible knowing I more than likely be swed by them! I just hope I don't go all out like Meg Ryan again over the colors I will be trying next. I have been so discipline at waiting not to spoil my reactions by trying them ahead of time, but I was surely nervous posting this particular video! ♥♥♥

      @@sundayberries I would say that some of the paints I bought because I saw them in a RUclips artist's pallete or a swatching video. However, that's probably not the best way to choose our paints. Although I have a lot of these paints, I've not progressed very far in knowing about what mixes work for me. I've realised that experienced artists seem to use far fewer colours, but they can mix them easily and quickly to get any desired effect and often tending towards muted tones and being more focused on value than colour. I try to do this sometimes by setting aside a palette of say 6, 8 or 12 colours and learn about what other colours I can create from them. By doing this I've found that some paints are much better than others when it comes to mixing.
      I guess I'm still very much in the experimental stage, but earlier this year I went to my first watercolour class. It was amazing how much I started to learn when having the benefit of an experienced artist giving my work critique and making suggests on how to improve. One of the first things she said to me was: Aha, I can see you have fallen into the trap of buying lots of different colours. She was right, I have been overwhelmed by too much choice. I also have several other sets of brand paints, such as Roman Szmal, White Nights, Van Gogh and Rosa Gallery. So you see, the paint obsession has got out of hand over here in Madrid where I live.

      @@markdonovan1540 Hello Mark! I must say it's so great to have you around, because it seems to me that we might be on the same boat. I have a lot of different brands, because I want to learn what the differences are and which ones resonate the most with me. The same goes with colors. At the same time, I think it would be quite interesting to swatch them for RUclips and share that experience. I do agree that not many colors are actually needed to be able to paint. Mixing is great because it will show us, not only the colors we can create but also individualize our palette and in doing so, start to define our unique style (at least colorwise). I also agree that many tend to go with muted colors, I am no exception, yet this is something that comes from my acrylic painting career. I have loved moody and earthy colors since the early 2000's when I launched my art career, so it is no surprise to me to be attracted to such colors. However, at the same time, I do enjoy discovering bright colors, because bright colors can serve us well if we know how to use them, particularly to spark attention to an area of the painting, or even liven it up! I do have one of the mentioned brands you named here: Roman Szmal, which I was fortunate enough to catch on a heavy discounted price from Jackson's, as here in the US they seem harder to get. I cannot wait to swatch those! That is why I said on the video that I am a bit afraid Daniel Smith could have ruined other brands for me, but then again, maybe I might find others that will trap me even further!
      Like yourself, I am in discovery period at the moment. I originally thought QOR was going to be hard to beat because I use Golden Acrylics for many years now, and I don't think I would ever change, knowing, first hand, how perfect they are. But Daniel Smith shocked me to the core. In any case, I feel like you do, that we are in an experimental phase and well, I thought to share this, as art is not only my career but also the greatest passion in life, right after being alive!! You watercolor teacher is right, being able to mix colors is a must, since you can literally mix just about any color in existence, with the exception of the primary colors (from which they are all created) So interesting! I love color Theory. I just feel a bit like in quicksand since this is not acrylics and watercolors have completely different qualities and also very different way to work them. Many days, I find myself painting as if I was handling watercolors, and that can turn quite frustrating. Anywayyyyyyy... I can keep on talking non stop about art.
      But hey! Madrid!! Como está Madrid! Que emocionante tener otra persona que habla español en el grupo! Hopefully, perhaps, I could do a few videos on color theory and mixing, and could help you and others. Sure, there will always be colors that are convenient to have, especially if they are used a lot. So don't worry about maybe having too many. Perhaps starting to look at them in a different way and create maybe different palettes will be a good solution.This is something I plan to do. If you like the idea of color theory and mixing let me know!!
      ♥🍒🍓🫐

      Hello Carissa! Thank you for leaving your comments, I am so excited to read it! I completely agree with you about the price tags of these watercolors, especially when I do love finding a good brand with decent pricing! I was lucky with this set because I found them on sale, and saw my opportunity there. I have not tried da vinci watercolors yet, but I do have my eye on them! I know da vinci colors quite well, but from the acrylic side. I am venturing here into something completely new and exciting with this media. I have been searching and buying here and there, waiting for good sales(in general), since February, and have been able to get some really good deals with some of these watercolors. But yes, I would love to try da vinci. Correct me if I am wrong? Didn't they expand their watercolors recently? I have been seeing a lot of available sets from them lately, but back in February, I did not see as many as now. And about the DS shrinkage from tube to pan, yes, I noticed that I had filled half of that half pan, and when I opened it again and it was all but a little bit in the pan. I wonder why that would happen! I do love the watercolors in tubes, maybe because I am used to acrylics and oils tubes, and love that liquid pigment immediacy. But I am so new at this, I feel like I know nothing and I am just starting to discover things little by little! Thank you!

So happy to meet a novice like me! ♥ I was doing my inventory on Daniel Smith's watercolors and I don't have many, although, if I swatch that 238 dot card will probably get me in so much trouble!! But on the other hand, I must find out for myself! haha! I don't think granulation is important over the other non-granulating colors. I think they just provide interesting textures that can enhance a painting nicely. But absolutely necessary, no, I don't think so. I think it is mostly a matter of personal preference... and of course, the type of work you do, and if you might want or not granulation. :) How long have you been working with watercolors? ♥

    How do the Daniel smith compare to the QOR? I am a real beginner ( to any painting at all, I have to stamp an image and then paint it😢) but I love trying. I have some of the QOR and am wondering if there is a big enough difference to warrant investing in a few Daniel Smith paints.

    • @sundayberries
      @sundayberries  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Deborah! ♥ Great to have you here and great question! To be completely honest, Qor was the first name brand that I purchased and loved it. I am an acrylic artist and Golden is the brand I use for acrylics and they also produce Qor Watercolors. This means that Qor is an absolutely amazing brand for watercolors, particularly because of the binder they use, which is unique to them. However, when I tried Daniel Smith something different happened. I simply fell in love with them because for me, they were everything that I was expecting of a watercolor. And that is probably the reason why I have been favoring Daniel Smith. On of the things that I love the most about DS is the delicate color and transparency and how they really feel so very natural. Qor's on the other hand flow like crazy in water which is always a plus and the intensity of the pigments is mind-blowing. To answer your question with all honestly, both brands are excellent in their own way, but I would possibly buy the Daniel Smith Dot Card and see the colors for yourself before investing on a new brand. The sample colors are enough for you to try out on your own watercolor paper. That way you do not over invest in watercolors you might not even like! :) I love and still use my Qor color, but I cannot deny my love for Daniel Smith. I am sure you will love them as well. Just try the dot card before committing to anything.
      Also, welcome to the world of watercolors! I too am quite new, little over a year and loving this ride. Hopefully you will join me on this adventure and practice this new media until we really master it! I truly believe that the starting point is the most difficult part. The rest is discipline and learn the basics that will get you started. It's okay to make messes, that seems to be something I do all the time! With time, we will get there. As long as you are loving the process and the media, I am sure you will be able to paint anything your heart desires! ♥♥
