As a performance, Hoechlin had me with his first two words (on 'Supergirl' episode 2x01). Just like the interaction with the kid here, it was _utterly_ Superman, captured perfectly in his physicality and one sentence of dialogue. Would it be even closer to perfect if he were built like Cavill too ? Sure, but that's not what matters most. Basically, the Arrowverse understands the character. They know that if you want an edge (pun not intended :) and complexity you can put him in a darker world but you _don't_ darken Superman - he lightens everything else, that's the soul of the character.
@@anonymes2884 Hoechlin definitely did his best and I am still trying to convince myself he is playing a father to teenage kids. But I have to go with Cavill, his two scenes with the military in Man Of Steel was enough to win me over. Those two scenes perfectly captured the Superman I loved from the Man Of Steel comics, Birthright, American Alien, All Star and even the Justice Society. @Ben Holmes It is a difference of opinion between the two of them. Probably about how Manhunter and Superman differ from using their powers. Do not forget, Supergirl also said the exact same thing about Superman and Batman, for the exact same reasons.
@@shauntempley9757 And also because Superman wanted to destroy all Kryptonite on earth while J'onn J'onnz wanted to keep it and even kept some in a secret location
@@susanmim9222 Yeah, Superman would advocate that step, because he knew that any one of his rogues could easily breach the location. Also, thanks to the comics, in the SuperVillain Blanque, Superman now has a telepathic Kryptonian rogue that can discover the location, far more easily than Gorilla Grodd could. I know why J'onn would want the alternative. He is thinking about the possibility of encountering other Kryptonian villains. If his history with Supergirl is anything to go by, he knows that those villains are going to show up again. But, this time, we are going to get the true, more powerful Superman threats. He wants an edge that can stop them quickly, and that is Kryptonite. The issue is, he is probably unaware, that the ore itself is not enough. It will just stop Superman.
@@shauntempley9757 but tbf, superman in the comics isn't always about destroying kryptonite. For example, superman would give batman a piece just in case he ever went evil.
They sure went all out on this show and I am here for it It's like they looked at all the flaws of CW's Arrowverse (as much as I do like it) and said "You know what? We're not going to do that."
The two networks are in talks to create new shows and split the costs. The episodes would air first on HBO Max and then on the CW the next day. Similar to how CW and DC did Stargirl.
The CW shows don't NEED a bigger budget. They can do well without it. Don't get me wrong, I would like it if Warner increased their budget, but they don't NEED it. What they NEED is less episodes. Less episodes gives the writers the opportunity to write a more cohesive story with less villain of the week fillers. I understand that writers have the ability to write a great 24 episode season, but it's not easy. It's easier to write a full 12 episode season than it is to write a full 24 episode season. Even if they can write a good 24 episode season, the show's budget has to stretch for all 24 episodes. Increasing the budget would help with the production, but not the writing. With that, you just have to hope they have decent writers. A big budget with bad writers isn't going to help. If the writers are decent, shortening the season would help the show better than giving it a bigger budget. If the writers are NOT decent, a smaller season gives the studio time and opportunity to get new writers or cancel the show before investing too much.
This was FANTASTIC!!! I was literally blown away! They pay homage to everything (Christopher Reeves, the first Action Comics, even the Animated Series and Smallville). Tyler Hoechlin is excellent. What he lacks in muscles and height (he’s honestly the smallest Superman in that regard), he makes up for in his embodiment of the character and embraces who Clark Kent is in an organic way. Everyone else is great as well! definitely excited for what’s next!
@@abdelrahmanwaheed7329 On the blackboard in their Metropolis kitchen, you can see the following To Do things listed: 1. Dr. Donner - Class sign up 2. Call Segal & Schuster and the phone number. Donner is a tip of the hat to Richard Donner, who directed the Christopher Reeve "Superman" movies. Segal and Schuster created "Superman".
In some ways this is the best moving picture version of Superman and his world. Part of it is that he's older and thus is the first Superman who knows exactly what he's doing. He is used to saving reactors and the authorities are used to him doing it.
Yeah, this is kind of "peak Superman" in the same sense that "The Dark Knight" is "peak Batman" - physically at the top of his abilities but still having accrued years of experience so he knows the "job" inside out. (I really appreciated them showing him super-listening to the reactor engineer too - he's a smart guy but Superman is, ultimately, physical not cerebral and this version knows that of himself and is comfortable with it)
In Crisis as Superman is flying lois says "Clark, I need you to get to Metropolis now. It's the boys." "The boys?" a startled Clark answers. "Yeah, honey, your sons?"
As they mention, the car specifically is from the cover of Action Comics #1 (i.e. Superman's first appearance and therefore arguably _the_ first appearance of a superhero, ever). Over the years it's been paid homage to in various films and TV shows (there's an even closer visual homage in 'Superman Returns' for instance).
This blew me away. Production quality was amazing and it shows. If they keep this up, it’s gonna be one of my favorite CW shows. I love the focus on the family, but the action looks great as well. A very good pilot episode.
Kind of gave me Christopher Reeve flashbacks when he mentioned that his mom made the suit. That line sounded like something that could have been in the Richard Donner Superman.
After watching the finale, I immediately decided I need to rewatch the whole show, so I'm going to go through it with the Blind Wave reactions, and I'm going to start while waiting for their finale reaction to drop.
I teared up when Clark's mom died too. I knew something was going to happen when he called her back that night. I was like "Are they really going to do Martha like that, the first episode?" I just knew. I love this show already, I love the vibe of it.
The whole freezing the water thing to drop it in the reactor was such a nice nod to superman 3 (1983 Christopher reeves). I wish the boys picked up on it.
It's so weird to see Tyler Hoechlin (Superman) like this when I'm used to the "sour wolf". He is great as Derek in Teen Wolf! And great in this one too! I really hope Blind Wave would watch Teen Wolf. It has great humor and awesome storyline. Gets better after every season (well, maybe it has it's peak at season 3). Teen Wolf is one of my favorite series, even tho I've watched probably thousands of different types of series! (I'm 30 years old, btw. So it's not just for teenagers :D)

I'm astonished that they managed to tell the Superman origin story in maybe 10 minutes, effectively and emotionally, and then launch into a truly new Superman story. I'm... wow.
The premiere was so good and cinematic! It gives me very Friday Night Lights vibes. The Stranger villain seems like he might be a Lex Luthor from the old multiverse and he might be mad at Clark. Crisis definitely changed a lot. I like how Jordan was the twin that got the Kryptonian abilities but I feel like down the line Jonathan will too. It seems like to me The Stranger is testing Clark to see how powerful he is and to see if he's worthy.
George Newbern, who voiced Superman in the Justice League Cartoon and a few animated movies, also voiced Sephiroth so the characters are connect twice now!
The last story starring the original Golden Age Superman (before Crisis), Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?, ends with him taking the name Jordan Elliott. That's were the name is sourced from. So far, Superman's sons (in comics & media) have been named: Johnathon (multiple), a Jason, a Jordan, an Adam and a Hunter.
I really hope we don't get the typical _"I don't want to be a freak"_ BS that we've had in every other situation like this. There's not a single adolescent kid that wouldn't want to have a super power.
True, but it's a lot to take in. Compared to others, Jordan has anxiety and other issues. He already feels like a freak, so learning your not even human doesn't make things better... There is a lot of room for character development and it's not gonna take 2 or 3 episodes
@@mattheochery Oh, I agree that there are ways to justify it. It's just that it's the only way I've ever seen this story told. And it never seemed real to me. I suppose this could be considered _timely,_ as a result. 🤷🏼♂️ Having said all that, the characterizations, actors and more cinematic quality of the production has impressed me. He definitely is growing on me. He really is a good Superman. Just a guy who grew up in Kansas and happened to have powers not some god trying to relate to humans. A man with problems, a man with weaknesses, but a man who still gives us hope and compassion.
The Max Fleischer cartoons is what Eric`s thinking of. Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster created Superman in the Comics during the Great Depression and since then have had many legal battles with DC .
What I enjoyed most about this new show is how nostalgic it made me feel but not that it was a repeat of anything already done. I also loved that it showed the good, and bad of more rural existence. I grew up on a ranch in TX in the 80s and 90s so I didn't deal with a lot of what they have to go through now but I hear from friends about their kids and what they are going through. I hope they keep it respectful but also not be afraid to go under rocks for some more realistic stories.
Stephen Amell didn't start it all Tom Welling and Justin Hartley's portrayal of Green Arrow paved the way for the Arrowverse and all these other shows.Thank you to Smallville the show that started it all.
The most Superman moment in the show and it isn't the Action Comics #1 nod, the fights, nor the ice. It was picking up the kids hat. Part of me thinks with Jordan, I wonder if he had super-hearing early and that adding to his issues. Imagine being a kid with super-hearing and not knowing it. Might you think you're hearing voices?
I had the exact same thought, he had super senses from an early age (maybe even xray vision) but he thought he was seeing/hearing things that weren't there. I could definitely see him going a little crazy from hearing all those voices and possibly randomly seeing people as skeletons or without skin without warning. Side note I think Jonathan also has some abilities, maybe enhanced strength but just not to the degree his father and brother have.
i was thoroughly impressed with this first episode. it was well presented. if they can keep this level of quality (the cinematography, the tension, the writing and acting, the fight choreography and action), i will definitely be all in for the series. i am a fan.

Superman I loved was optimistic and at the same time a disciplined man, him talking to Lennox and the interrogation tactics were Grade A Superman. But Tyler also did a great job, I am already liking his rebirth style story
Them breaking the fourth wall in this episode having Injustice 2 in there was funny to me. I love when shows break the fourth wall.
Except when you remember that the whole idea of injustice reveals that Supes is Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne is Batman 😱😂😂
Thought it was MK v DC
@@DJLawrence In injustice 2 there’s a MK character
Yes that was awesome to see
This Pilot was a 10/10 for me I hope they keep it up with the production quality and keep the writers they have now and not replace them with terrible writers
Oh my god I love seeing Superman being nice and happy, it’s been so long.
Best CGI moment was when he was like ok this is serious and used cold breath then heat vision. Pretty impressed with the cgi work so far, hope they didn't use lots of the budget on the pilot. Superman! :)
I have a good feeling about this show. Touch wood. Hope it does well because I think Tyler is a fantastic Superman and Clark and he deserves credit through all the criticism he’s received.
I think it looked bad when he froze the water and lifted the ice cube, but the water pouring/melting off of it looked awsome.
OF COURSE, Eric was the president of the FFA.
Never doubted you.
7:35 i wanted to hug Eric so much. And this show starts really good. Excited to be on this journey with you Blind Wave Crew!
J'onn J'onnz needs to be in this Superman show since him and Superman are friends, and also founding members of the Justice League.....
Considering this shows budget is higher and it’s getting help form hbo max really makes it stand out
Well-executed, wholesome good boy Superman.
I feel like a man dying of thirst in the Sahara who just found an oasis filled with ice cream.

They sure went all out on this show and I am here for it
It's like they looked at all the flaws of CW's Arrowverse (as much as I do like it) and said "You know what? We're not going to do that."
As they absolutely should have done
Lol it is only the first episode.. They still have a lot of time to mess if up 🤣

The Luther family is large. Capitan Luther may not even be Lex.
Obviously not. That’s not Jon Cryer.
@@Phanthief95 I heard that they would have someone else to portray Lex
Or it could be Lex’s brother Alexander?
Luthors on the show Krypton were a black family
I mean that character said that his world was destroyed, so it could very well be a Lex that lost his world due to Crisis.
Hopefully HBO will give more money to the CW for current and future shows and decrease the amount of episodes.
Why doesn’t HBO just create dc shows for their service. Seems weird to share unless it’s because they want to share finances too
@@jonathanradut2595 JJ Abrams is making a Justice League Dark series for HBO as well as that a Green Lantern show is in the works at HBO.
Yeah they should do the format of the marvel tv shows like daredevil or punisher. More is less, less is more.
Jordan has a *SUPERBOY PRIME* tag wrapped al over his face, that its scary.
I really hope they don't go that way. Kid's representation for a lot of kids with the same type of disorder.
He might become the opposite instead, with his father tutoring him on how to use and when to use his powers.
superman's kid: throws a football through a rope
Eric: i could do that
This was FANTASTIC!!!
It even payed homage to man of steel in a way 😂
@@abdelrahmanwaheed7329 yep! Whoever’s doing the show really did their homework!
@@abdelrahmanwaheed7329 On the blackboard in their Metropolis kitchen, you can see the following To Do things listed:
1. Dr. Donner - Class sign up
2. Call Segal & Schuster and the phone number.
Donner is a tip of the hat to Richard Donner, who directed the Christopher Reeve "Superman" movies. Segal and Schuster created "Superman".
It feels like it's made by people that really like and more to the point _understand_ Superman. Which bodes well.
(I really appreciated them showing him super-listening to the reactor engineer too - he's a smart guy but Superman is, ultimately, physical not cerebral and this version knows that of himself and is comfortable with it)
As someone who works on the vfx whenever you guys yelled "look how good this looks!" I felt so proud XD
In Crisis as Superman is flying lois says "Clark, I need you to get to Metropolis now. It's the boys."
"The boys?" a startled Clark answers. "Yeah, honey, your sons?"
That classic suit moment and catching the car was a fantastic nod to Supermans early cartoons
Now we made it to the end of a great show. Started with smallville in 2001 on the WB and ended with this, glad to see you guys review this series.
Aaron actually predicted the Luthor thing
it's superman... there is always a Luthor.
Love that line. Actually is from a comic book. 'Superman For All Seasons'. Liked that one alot.
It is also a line used in Lois and Clark the Dean Cain version.
Oh man this pilot was absolutely amazing. Surpassed all my expectations. Superman done right! Also they both definitely have powers
Very impressed by the music, storytelling, VFX, emotion. The first 5 minutes of this show was better then most things WB DC has ever done. Felt genuine and felt angst/love. This is going to be helluva ride.
I was confused about this at first, I thought this was set in the future with the kids being older, but noo crisis changed it so he had kids WAY earlier. I got it lmao
Edit: I said I understood it people, no need to fight in the comments lol
WAIT I’m so dumb I also thought this was like 2032 or smtg
@@jessjasmin06 I know, its very confusing lol
How do people find this so confusing.
Because before crisis Lois and Clark just got married and had a son who was only a baby and now after crisis there’s 2 sons and much older
@@grapeleiva2266 since Oliver reborn the Multiverse while rebirth it's now set in stone like they have all lived on the same Earth for years and so the whole story of Clark and Lois has been re written an so there kids are teenagers that's why John John had to give everyone the memory of what happened on the previous Earth before the crisis because no one remembered all they knew was that we all live on the same Earth
I was thinking that the kid clark saved in the opening could've been john henry irons and their gonna call that back for him to become steel.
I'm glad that Clark felt so proud when he said that his mom made his first suit. He's still a farmboy :,)
The one thing I always love about superman is his humanity
Also I would loveeee to see Martian manhunter in this show, he would look so damn cool in this more serious cinematic style
Keep the same Martian Manhunter design from Supergirl with better cgi
I think it'd be cool if they just used makeup and prosthetics, with minor cgi enhancements, that'd look more realistic.
Tyler has done such a good job as Superman!
This Channel has slowly become my favorite reaction channel, Keep it up guys!!
I'm really glad that they included a character with an anxiety disorder! It's good to see some mental health representation.
I'm astonished that they managed to tell the Superman origin story in maybe 10 minutes, effectively and emotionally, and then launch into a truly new Superman story.
I'm... wow.
Damn this really surpassed my expectations
The premiere was so good and cinematic! It gives me very Friday Night Lights vibes. The Stranger villain seems like he might be a Lex Luthor from the old multiverse and he might be mad at Clark. Crisis definitely changed a lot. I like how Jordan was the twin that got the Kryptonian abilities but I feel like down the line Jonathan will too. It seems like to me The Stranger is testing Clark to see how powerful he is and to see if he's worthy.
If "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose" applies to _any_ superhero, it surely applies to Superman.
Just found out that this Superman is also the new English VA for Sephiroth. Now im just imagining some alt universe where Sephiroth is a big hero guy.
Or jump with joy to know their dad is no other than Superman himself.
@@donnatemple1999 _Right?_ 😏
True, but it's a lot to take in.
I supposed if we consider how children are being protected from reality instead of being taught to deal with it, they are much more fragile. I suppose this could be considered _timely,_ as a result. 🤷🏼♂️
Having said all that, the characterizations, actors and more cinematic quality of the production has impressed me. I really wasn't even going to watch it, because I expected it to be very TV like. _Very CW,_ as *Eric* put it. And while that's a selling point for some, it really hasn't been to me. Not that I'm the arbiter of all things of quality.😏

I'm honestly happy to finally see a good show back on the CW. This is the show nobody wanted, but the one we everyone needed. Also I flipped out when I saw injustice 2 in another cw show. That kinda exposes everyone's secret Identity lol
Kara has to exist. In the Crisis cross over, Lois referenced "the boys" (or something like that) therefore at least we know that the crisis birthed the twins ergo Kara exists in some capacity in this universe.
I still can't believe how good this look. Can't wait for the next episode...!!

The reverse 'Smallville'
It was visually stunning! I have all the same questions you guys do, can't wait to see where it goes.
I actually completely forgot this show was in the arrowverse until like halfway through. I fell in love with this show before I hit the halfway mark
I was surprised just how much I really loved this show. Felt like I got that old school Superman back.
Loved the Fleischer suit.
It’s so nice to see other people smile while watching something soooo good and something that is dear to you since childhood
Stephen Amell didn't start it all Tom Welling and Justin Hartley's portrayal of Green Arrow paved the way for the Arrowverse and all these other shows.Thank you to Smallville the show that started it all.
The Vancouver filmed shots were like 1/2 a block from my apartment! I have to figure out how to be an extra!!
Had the same thought. Especially when he asked his dad to turn the music back up.
i was thoroughly impressed with this first episode. it was well presented. if they can keep this level of quality (the cinematography, the tension, the writing and acting, the fight choreography and action), i will definitely be all in for the series. i am a fan.
That HBO money goes a long way. It just looks so good
