Why is this canal so shallow?

  • In this video I moor up on an aqueduct, visit two pubs to see which one is the best, beach-comb by a river, explain how my water tank works, and why the Macclesfield canal is so shallow (with my artist's interpretation of a cross section of the canal).
Why is the Macclesfield so shallow? More info from the Macclesfield Canal Society:
“...the water level in the top length from Marple to Bosley (and including the top length of the Peak Forest Canal) may be as much as six inches lower than normal during the summer months! This leads to difficulty in mooring away from wharves.
The Macclesfield Canal was built as a 'state of the art' waterway. This meant that Thomas Telford, who laid out the route and designed the canal, employed all of the lessons he had learnt on earlier canals. As a result the Macclesfield 'suffers' from the fact that it was designed very specifically for commercial carrying - how was Telford to know that leisure would soon become its principal purpose?
The Macc has a very shallow and tapered bottom. The deep channel is just wide enough for two boats to pass in the centre, indeed, deeper draughted boats would question use of the word deep... The tapers from the deep channel to the bank ensure that the depth at the sides is insufficient to moor at many places along the canal. The canal was designed for boats to moor at the wharves and nowhere else. Although modern steel narrow boats are shallower draughted than a loaded working boat they still find it difficult to moor close in along much of the length. Fibreglass cruisers don't usually experience these difficulties.” - go to macclesfieldca... for more history on the canal.

    Hi Robbie
You could have stayed on the embankment below Bosley Locks which is one of the finest moorings on the entire system.
I am sure that you know this but it is good practice to run water through the hose before filling the tank and it was not clear if you did this. Also, using the barge pole is a lever is a total no no; use it to push as that is where its strength lies.
    All the best
    Jeff

Reminds me of.....A Tale of 1.5 pubs !
Had rellies visiting and we fancied a meal out at lunchtime. I picked a pub in a village/hamlet I'd not been into - driven past a few times. Parked the car, wandered in - looked promising - bar and a dining room - so, effectively a choice of where we could eat. So I asked bar staff if they could recommend a place to eat (bar or dining room).
They recommended the other pub ! (& they were right)
They found us a room to ourselves that was neither bar nor main dining room - but cosy. And that's when things went pear-shaped. The minimalist menu was on a simple sheet of A4 - the back of which had been scribbled all over by a kid. The food we got was ok but so little choice. We'll choose to avoid next time ! Still haven't tried the other pub !

Good to see the old bargepole in its element. They could eliminate the shallow bits by sheetpiling the banks and moving the locks from the pound above to a new position beyond the shallows (raising the water level to that of the pound above). You can get pointy stickers at the stationers which you can inscribe with canal notes, like "water point" when it's not on the map. Also this time two pubs for the price of one - much appreciated!

A tip if you get grounded and didn't know already:
    - Put it in fairly hard reverse. This pulls water under the boat and lifts it up a little off the bottom of the canal, so you _should_ be able to reverse off most events of running aground.
[ _Conversely, going forwards pulls the boat down_ ]

My wife agreed with me, that it was like standing at the helm with you. Thanks for that. Watched this video again and it reminded me, another way to get yourself of the mud, which we did when on the macc. If you can stand on the Gunwale at the side and while carefully holding on to the hand rail, slightly start a rocking motion. Of course this requires someone at the helm to gently tick over in reverse. Bit difficult on your own I realise. Take care mate.

I continuously cruise on the Lancaster Canal which is also very shallow. It could do with dredging but it's not happening. The CRT really get my back up.

Stuck on the boat I watched a documentary recently that said the CRT dredge about 30 miles of canal per year. It would take almost a century to dredge the entire system at that rate. I agree, it's ridiculous, but like everyone else they are starved of funds, and dredging is an expensive business.

You know it's a good pub, when it is the one the locals prefer! We have quite a number of bars in town, mostly that cater to the local University. But one, which has been here for over 100 years, is where us locally born folks go to. Steeped in Irish lore and family history, it is the one place to go when you have a yen to sing Irish drinking songs in a key never before heard, by people who have no business singing. It's glorious!
    AND!!! They serve Coors :)

Another great video buddy, loved the editing of shots at around 8mins in animals I've how you changed shots when you used the edge of the table in the pubs as a editing trick to change shots. Keep up the great work buddy.
