Robbie, regarding the cost of taking your boat on Manchester Ship Canal (MSC)it depends how you look at it. You seem to think that Peel Ports are ripping you off but analyse those charges and see if you feel differently. Firstly the seaworthiness check was £60 not £100 like you said, and we had no travelling costs because we met our surveyor on the Weaver visitor moorings near where he’s based. Transit of the 36 miles was £178 plus £30 to lock up to the Bridgewater Canal. Total cost £268. Marsh Lock where you moored is free (CRT lock). None of the MSC locks are manned and each requires 2 operators who have to travel to & from them especially for you. If you therefore say 1 hour of their time for each lock including their travelling, x 2 operators, equals 10 man hours which works out at £26.80 per hour. Where else can you get labour rates these days for that price?
Is the trip worth it? There’s a lot of monotony during the 7-8 hour journey and not a lot to see, but there are some quite sizeable ships, particularly at the Runcorn end, some moored up and some on the move (you see more of them if you go onto the Ship Canal at Ellesmere Port rather than Marsh Lock). It's a lot of money but despite the monotony I thought it was worth it just for the experience of it all, something different.

Hi Robbie, I paused for a short time in watching you latest vlog on self esteem and then it disappeared! I wanted to tell you how helpful I was finding it. I’ve suffered from low self esteem all my life. Please reconsider pulling it, or at least edit it. I think you said all you needed to in the first half. Incredibly helpful. Robbie, you are the greatest. Of all the narrowboat vloggers I watch, yours are by far the best and most truthful. Get yourself a border collie, go and see Barbara Sykes at FOSTBC near Bingley. A border collie will give you 10 times what you give it and the rest. I’m in Halifax, if you’re within 20 miles or so, me and Jess will call in for a brew (just a biscuit for Jess). Chin up mate. You're doing a great job of fixing yourself Robbie. People who research and look for ways of dealing with their issues are less likely to lapse back into habitual behaviours and patterns of thinking. Some therapists and doctors have been known to prescribe library books to encourage people to help themselves rather than relying on medications (prescribed or otherwise).
The drink is a distraction Robbie, a means of avoiding things by numbing the mind, procrastination again, procrastination is anxiety, fear of what might happen if you do or don't complete a task so we put it off by worrying too much. The solution to a problem is often found in the problem, completing the tasks we put off solves the problem and boosts self esteem, it's an "esteemable act" (my word for it 🙂). We do the same thing psychologically, we put off dealing with issues but they don't get solved when we do that which is why the video you just uploaded is such a valuable video. Putting things off possibly ties in with low self esteem but it's not always good to label yourself as we all compare ourselves to others, in psychology it's called social comparison but you can find it in religions and philosophy also. It's not good to make ourselves or others feel inferior or superior but we do tend to compare ourselves in relation to others. So we have the meek and mild agreeable people on one end of the scale and the pushy arrogant twats on the other end, somewhere in the middle maybe?
Being too agreeable leads to feelings of low self worth and depression. It's a cumulative thing, when we allow others to assert themselves over us we come away feeling like we've been pushed aside or stepped on, it can leave us feeling quite resentful and the outcome usually leads to anger and feelings of depression for allowing others to affect our lives negatively.
Drinking excessively is self harm Robbie, there's no easy way to say it, you're turning your resentment inwards when you drink. I do it with biscuits, I have a shit day then I demolish all the biscuits, then I get a headache, then I get fat, the I need another filling in my teeth all because I let someone treat me poorly or I'm beating myself up about another minor defeat in life.
Perfectionism is an oxymoron, when a perfectionist scores 99.9% they see it as a failure because its not perfect. Better to be an optimalist, pat yourself on the back when you do well, why? because you did a bloody good job and you gave it your best shot 🙂
WhatsApp support group, excellent idea but watch out for burn out, even counsellors need supervision/counselling from other counsellors.
Psychosomatic illness: research the biopsychosocial model. Gabor Mate gives some excellent talks on RUclips about this concept. There's also some online articles about it. Put simply, our environment, biology and psychology all have the ability to affect each other in turn, it's a very complex model. Social problems, health problems and psychological problems compound each other and can become a tangled mess as you say, anxiety can lead to social phobia which can affect work then the bills don't get paid and so on and so on.
You look lost, best place to be, it sounds like everything is pushing you on to another chapter in your life, another challenge maybe? The poem Santiago by David Whyte captures this beautifully and I just so happen to have it uploaded on my channel for times like these. Dante was lost when Virgil appeared, Neo was lost when Morpheus appeared, Daniel Son was lost when Mr. Miage appeared and so begins the hero's journey...
What a great time to be alive! You've got this Robbie! Love you man 😉

Enjoyed this one Robbie and I appreciate your candor in regard to sacrificing your privacy when you offer your life up on RUclips. I know so many people are grateful for the content you and other Narrowboaters publish each week, it allows us all to at least, vicariously live our Narrowboat adventures. I'd be joining you right now in England on a hire boat if I could, but sadly, I'm not willing to pay the price of an experimental vaccine injected into me, so those plans are on hold. I'm looking forward to the next one, and wishing you all the very best from Avondale, Arizona.

Hi Robbie. When I was somewhat younger (ha ha) I remember the locks going down the hill from the Bridgewater Canal at Runcorn to the Weaver Navigation. They were still in water then. Great shame they were filled-in. Seems kids couldn't stay away from them and too many accidents. Hopefully they can be restored as they would make an excellent circular tour using the Anderton Boat Lift. Keep well, stay safe. Bobby D.

Hi Robbie there is a campaign to restore the Weston & Runcorn Canal just as there is for the Bridgewater canal that ends in Runcorn and they want to reopen it by moving some of it from its original course as there are buildings and paths over the old canal, but the locks are still visible at the end of the canal in Runcorn, as this section leads down to the MSC which in turn leads to the weaver and the Weston & Runcorn canal

If you ever get the privilege to meet him, please do so because he is such a humble gentlemen! Great giggle too! We were in a pub to watch the football game and a girl comes round with a board to guess what minute the 1st goal will be scored, so me being useless and never carrying any cash (always use card) Robbie here gives me a quid to guess a number. Producer Stu puts his on 12 and I go on 11. Goal is scored in the 11th minute, the girl comes back and says "you're both sharing it" and me being a footie coach said "it was scored in the 11th not 12th lol" and then it was decided I won and then I felt guilty and so it was decided we split it 3 ways. Because without Rob giving me the 1 pound it wouldn't have happened, without me guessing 11 it wouldn't have happened, and without Producer Stu none of us would be there in that moment!! 🤣

That looked like a lonely stretch of canal you were on and moored up at. Guinness on tap is always good but the new canned Guinness vs prior canning method is much better. I am also a big fan of Guinness Blonde which goes down well on hot days and does not have a bitter after taste of an IPA.

Glad to see you back on You Tube. I assume you are doing more work for the BBC? I’ll have to wait till I can stream it in the US. Take care of yourself and be safe. We, your fans, should get together and deliver a case of your favorite beverage!

great vlog Robbie. Loved the quick tour of the Daniel. Yes Guinness is best drunk from draught but if it comes down to bottle or can then I will stick with the can. Bottle is to gassy for my liking. Keep safe

As someone originally from Merseyside, I've always considered that area near Runcorn to be a Bladerunner-esque dystopian no man's land. Industrial, polluted and ugly. However, you made it look really interesting. And what is with so many popular RUclips narrowboaters gathering in the same location? Surreal in a way.

Hi Robbie, great to have your videos again. I was brought up near Northwich so I feel it's like going home though I was to young to remember it apart from the place names. My dream is to have a holiday on a narrowboat but as I am single and 71 now I can't see a way forward. Any ideas welcome for finding someone to pay to drive the boat I would hopefully hire? The guinness looked like a good glass of fuel after a day's work! Best wishes, Lesley.

Hi Lesley you’ll have no end of help if you can join your local boat group perhaps on Facebook or in person. Boaters mostly hibernate in winter but they are usually v helpful!

I thought your coverage of the steam boat Danny Adamson was complementary to the Foxes' one. I liked the interview with the engineers and seeing more of the engine room. Another excellent video :) BTW can some Brit explain why saying it's chilly outside is a weird/off thing? I'm somewhat well-versed in British vs American but always learning (even about new Americanisms).
