- From Goole to Barmby Barrage and on to East Cottingwith in East Yorkshire. Huge thanks to Pocklington canal amenity society member John Lewis, as I needed a second crew member for the trip simply to gain passage through Goole docks, and he graciously stepped up. We cranked it along a very windy tidal river Ouse, going the wrong side of an island, stopping off at a campsite pub and then I was left to journey solo along the wild and winding river Derwent, before meeting another PCAS member Malcolm who was ready with his camera to take snaps!!

There are very few times I put my knitting down to watch something. This was one of those times. Caught myself holding my breath a few times. One of the best vids so far :)

Did the Pocklington Canal back in the 80s, water was gin clear; I saw a Pike take a smaller fish. Stunning. Got stuck winding at the limit of navigation and had to recruit help from the local pub to pull the boat round...

I' am from Alkmaar, The Netherlands. I've been following your vlogs for a while now. Always makes me homesick for England, beautiful scenery and landscapes. My partner is from Leicester and because of lockdown and Brexit we've not been to England for about 3 yrs. Also your music is great!

The Pocklington has got to be one of the most beautiful stretches on the network, but it is probably going to make you work for the privilege of visiting, particularly with low water levels. Great video; thanks.

Just to a dd another comment. As an American that is gradually loosing their hearing. AND having more problems with accents I am so happy that I understand almost every word you say. It makes watching your vlogs a joy( besides the fact that I think you are a hoot.....incase you haven't heard that one..it means fun to be around. ) anyway...carry on and CRANK IT...

We really do appreciate your videos having given up boating on the waterways some years ago. I get the old maps out to check your locations, you go to a lot of places we never managed to visit, and a few we wouldn't want to !

Watched Narrowboat Will give the Pocklington a go a while back, and also by his reference had to check Minimal List's attempt some time ago. It appears to be very challenging, so was excited to watch your attempt also . Can't wait for the thrilling conclusion. Thanks for the great vlogs.....never a dull moment!!

The thing is with Cumming is that when you 1st see him, you're almost certain he's going to be an annoying, nightmare of a guy with not much going for him. Like they say tho', never judge a book by its cover. He's actually an interesting, funny, charming & very innovative chap, in a way that women, in particular, find irresistible! Having followed his channel since the early days, I for one envy him, it's clear that he's gone from being a relative nobody to now having to fight the beautiful women off with a stick!

flippin eck Robbie - that turn into the 2nd river - nearly wetting myself - and noticed that one or two of the uprights of the big "fence" just there looked like a bigger boat than yours had bashed into them. God bless John - did he know what he was letting himself in for?? I mean being with you, not the navigation.
That last bit of the canal was like a jungle cruise. Here we have these tiny-tiny mosquitos we call "ankle biters or noseeums", you can't feel their bite, but they leave your ankles black and blue with huge welts that last for weeks.
Are these the little black things that seem to scurry around?
@@rowgli They are tiny mosquitoes almost look like black flies (vicious buggers, you would see in the north east of the US). They tend to fly and bite no higher than just below your knee cap. Bites or blood suckage locations are painful and itch, both conditions last for weeks. Welts are typically the size of a silver dollar and turn black & blue. I would rank their bite worse than a horsefly and black flies. If you can keep your feet higher than 1.5 to 2 feet higher than the ground chances are you will not get bitten.

Really, really enjoyable watch was that Robbie my boy. The blend of the commercial stuff and then the remoteness of the Pocklington was a brilliant contrast. Might I suggest you take a look at some of the vlogs of MV Liselot. He is based in the Nederlands and shows the workings of the canal network and plenty of commercial traffic. Think you might enjoy it and the chap is a character and a bit bonkers.
Narrowboat life is so very appealing I think I would like to take the plunge.

Passed your boat a week ago so you made it out of the pocklington, i have a 42 foot narrowboat with a beta marine 38 engine that is 4 months old, your braver than me cos i wouldnt come out of goole onto the ouse, selby yes but goole i will pass on.
Great video, thanks Robbie. Just contemplating doing the Selby Canal then Selby to Goole to kill some time while waiting for the Vazon bridge to be repaired. (Really don't fancy Trent Falls). So this was doubly interesting as we'd being doing part of your journey in reverse. Slightly nervous at the sheer size of the Ouse through Goole. All credit to you for tackling this with your low-powered boat!
I had similar experience on my first sailing to IOW with an elderly gentlemen from the sailing club who I thought would help but I ended up turning back. He just wanted a trip out to eat his sandwiches. At least you got there and could not have done it without a 2nd crew member. Good job that wrong turn didn't ground you.
That was quite a good mix, Goole Harbour/ Port looks amazing, thank you for taking us with you, did not even realise you can access the Derwent from the Ouse, always thought it was derelict. I live and learn. Stay safe and well

I just followed Narrowboat Will up here to see him claim his Silver Propellor for getting to the final winding hole (only some 5 km short of Pocklington - seems a bit rough) and I'm delighted to experience this beautiful countryside again (and the challenge to you) but from another perspective.

Hi Robbie, love your videos, they are so natural and honest. This vid was interesting for me as I live at the bottom end of the ouse, just before it reaches the sea, so it's amazing to see its journey and a sense of the highs and low that people enjoying the river have been through. I'll soon be joining the narrowboat community, so maybe our paths will cross or in one of your recommended pubs! Keep going fella, you're doing a great job.

Many years ago I gave up on the Pocklington as I was down the weed hatch every 50 yards due to the weeds growing from bank to bank.
I did 700 yards and gave up. It took me all day. N/b The Dillen

What a great escapade into the tidal Ouse! Have entered the Tidal Trent in a 22 ft Freeman Cruiser, which was exciting with 11 ft of fresh! Not nearly as wide as the Ouse where you were!
40 years ago when I did that same trip, there were no manual's, no radio and no assistance.... But we still made it all the way! 🤔👌I left from Brigg... Fair trip! Especially back then...

Oh my, such drama. Twice over. Big rivers, little canals. Kept reminding myself that you survived well enough to edit and post, so all good. The SNAP just before 22:00 was just brilliant.
That choppy but of the Ouse reminded me of piloting my Grandparents Broads cruiser Nenya across Breydon Water on a very windy and very wet Easter holiday!

I didnt realise Goole was far in land until I looked on a map, the river must have very deep channels if its 50 miles inland and ships like The Amadeus can navigate so far up it. Reminds me a bit of Preston and the inland docks there, although the River Ribble has massively silted up over the years and they no longer dredge it as larger boats dont come into the docks anymore.
On such a vast tidal river, Naughty Lass looked like a model boat - scary stuff!
I really enjoyed the vlog Robbie. The Pocklington Canal is a really attractive part of the system.
The Lower Derwent Valley Nature Reserve area is well worth a visit. This is not the best time of year to see the bird life and other fauna around the canal owing to the reeds, bushes etc making the sight lines difficult but the walk from East Cottingwith to Pocklington is well worth doing, perhaps with a stop off for a pint in Melbourne....

Thanks for this excting adventure Robbie. Always a joy to follow Naughty Lass. It was quite nerve wracking at a few stages of the voyage. I was listening to Runrig on Sky Arts at the same time!! Pity about the pesky horse flies. Hope you got the right cream for it from the pharmacy.

Would love to visit the Pocklington at some stage but alas we’re too long.
Put some (cheap) ground coffee in an ash tray or similar and light it . The smoke will keep wasps , horse flies etc away . You can even use used dried out coffee grinds .
The Pocklington Canal has to be the most British sounding canal ever.

I hate horse flies. They are so stealthy you do not feel them land on you at all. Only pure luck if you manage to catch the little tinkers before they bite. To be fair I hate most flies but thems the worst. Loved the interesting way you navigated off the Tidal River Ouse. Kudos.

Robbie - I think I would be a bit nervous on a big river too. I always preferred canals to the Broads. The upper reaches of the Derwent look more like jungle exploration than river travel. You did well - Tim
