I totally read the seagull's "hi guys" in Robbie's voice.
When the kids are all old enough to fly the nest I am all over this lifestyle, I know its not all plain sailing err plain boating but your vlogs are great Robbie, you're really selling it. You should be ambassador to the CRT or at least sponsored by CAMRA!

Balls of steel Robbie, we’ve just done our first river journey from Oxford to Lechlade and the Jury’s out as to whether we like rivers
Had some really strong flows and 40 mph head winds, thought the boat was gonna roll over on a couple of sharp bends when the wind caught us side ways
Loved the day 3 early morning start with the mist on the river and the river so still
Hope one day our Vlogs will look as natural and as slick as your 👍
Yeah I definitely would ‘t recommend going out in anything over a force 5 if you can help it! Cheers, it’s only taken me 13 years to get to this point!!

Nottingham, the city of my birth. Now living in Gloucestershire where we have some great canal restoration going on.
Robbie, again a great video. What I like is that your slow speed allows everyone to enjoy the countryside in greater width and detail. With increased speed, the view narrows drastically and blurs out. Ontario thanks you.

Great stuff up the Orinoco . natives friendly, and pub breakie, what more is there to want !
I mention this because many canal boaters don’t use springs (diagonal mooring ropes) at all, but if you motor against a bow spring it will bring your boat alongside, even against a current trying to drive you away from a quay wall or pontoon. You can also leave your boat motoring against a spring in a lock, when operating it single handed.

It’s an amazing route in the summer. We saw kids jumping off gunthorpe bridge into the river and I saw a large bird of pray in stoke woods. One of my favourite cruises ever (in the summer)!

Been in that pub a few times when living in Newark and Hucknall. great days at Trent Bridge Cricket, Cloughie's Forest and County and saw Leicester Tiger v Llanelli Scarlets Heineken Cup Semi Final Classic. Great City for Canal side activities

@@RobbieCumming no sir, I followed yours and jonnos "tick over" etiquette. Actually I must say the videos are helpful if you can learn by watching. I figured out mooring and tying up before I'd even stepped on the boat. I remembered to check upstream for oncoming boats at locks before emptying them etc all because I watched you and Jonno. I knew to expect the boat to be bundled about going up a big lock before I'd even done one which made my experience less scary when handling someone else's boat... Although when we got to Abingdon, we went for a recce of the place and every time I went past a boozer, I sang pub of the weeeeeeek.... even if I didn't know if they were actually any good or not... because I only went to one. I was knackered alright? 😂

Day 3 misty in the morning on the canal ,gets the breath back in me every time , thanks ,, just needed fried egg on toast ,, butter bread around edges only and bite a hole in the middle drop the butterside down in a hot frying pan and crack an egg into the hole in the center , if you need to eat as a sandwich while traveling it might take a little practice to not burn the toast and get a cooked egg thats not going to need a major cleanup
I once made the same mistake with some horse mushrooms, (they taste great but turn everything brown). I made an omlette, but thought i'd save time and put the the eggs, salt & pepper, milk and mushrooms into a liquidiser, quick zap and into the pan. Delicious, but looked like ready mix cement. I could only eat it, smothered with brown sauce or with my eyes shut (which i did), well i wasn't going to waste good food.

Although I did the Trent in my boat last year it was great watching your video! I loved it but there was always a sense of vulnerability on that big river. Haha, that party boat coming towards you at Holme PP is surreal. Reminds me of a Rosie and Jim episode of The Disco Boat. I stayed overnight on that pontoon opposite the Notts Forest stadium :) Thanks for the video, Robbie.

Before I start, I recommend you try my very favourite sandwich. You have to try it. Strawberry jam, banana and crunchy peanut butter. This video was excellent especially the end bit where the mist and shadows made for some lovely pictures. Well done Robbie to get us to the end of our journey

The morning cruising was just glorius! The Sun and the Mist, just love it. Is this part of an International Waterway? Then they have to sign up everything in metric because this is internatinonal standart. Funny enough that all around the world, the speed for ships and boats are meassured in knots. Stay safe.

That morning light at 07:00 on the last day was intoxicating - and the mist on the river, truly great scenes, only available (to me) on this channel! A technicality: "Holm" is "small island" in Norse (think Stockholm or off the coast of Pembrokeshire Grassholm) and I have a very special own reason for having to point that out (*searches for blushing smiley but can't find one*). About the engine: surely you could get a second-hand (reconditioned) replacement with 25 hp fitted? The engine would be cheap, it wouldn't use any more fuel than yours, it's just the fitting, really. Oh and I really liked that cricket pub, it has the flair of a wirtschaft here in Munich.
I have scoured the entire width and depth of the Internet and came to the alarming realization that I have seen ALL of Robbie Cumming’s travel logs and the well has run dry. I have clicked through all the likes, enjoyed every minute, only occasionally suffered through low points.
Now what? What am I to do? The next log is yet days away!
I know. Start all over again, pretending not to have seen it before. Still, there is a nagging worry that I have missed one in a dark corner.

The tidal flow is slower nearer the banks of a river, also you should always start your engine and warm it up before casting off on a river!

One of my favourite mooring spots in Notts right there, no one bothers you.
I was surprised at that! Yes love this mooring although the weekend rowers are a bit annoying (why is there always a guy on a bike shouting over your boat?!!)

We dis go down the river Severn this time last year. It was nerve racking but did reach gloucester docks in a day from tewskbury. Envious of you at the moment. How's your refurb going. Ie your toilet

A tale of the Trent and crap weather: Several years ago me and a mate were on a NY Moors hike when the heavens opened. A van driver pulled over and gave us a lift. The driver said he was himself a regular hiker since retiring from skippering a Trent gravel barge. His last job and the barge's, was at Nottingham, moored alongside the riverside concrete ware house at Trent basin, during demolition. This was to catch debris which would otherwise fall in the river. I see from your vid that this area is undergoing gentrification where the warehouse stood and found a pic of said barge on station at Connell Brothers website.

Excellent Vlog again Robbie, I've covered most of this area many times by car / van, it's an excellent change to see it from the river perspective and not just looking at the river :-)
Re the speed limits - interesting, my first thought was how do you know your speed, if you don't have any way of measuring your speed? I once got caught speeding on my push bike, not a good day, I had no idea how fast I was travelling!

Robbie, you definitely have a knack for putting together canal videos, your cruising footage is consistently the best among the leading canal vloggers. The early morning misty scenes approaching Nottingham were exceptional. I recall you travelling the other way with Lou. Are all of the River Trent Locks unmanned at this time of year? I seem to remember that one of the locks last year when manned with lockies told you that you should have pre-warned them of your arrival in advance - presumably that would only apply to the busy season? How would you know in advance if you were supposed to pre-warn certain Locks on the Trent? Interesting how you handled those very deep 'push button' locks travelling solo. Useful to see how you controlled the flow into the lock. Mike
Well remembered Mike!!! I’m impressed, yes Gunthorpe lock was the one, except at this time of year only Hazelford seemed to be manned (by a lady lockkeeper no less). If I was going again at any time of year I would first ring the CRT (or any one of the locks if I had the number) and ask as they are always very helpful in that respect. Trent lock is an awesome place to go
being a steel hull you could weld a outboard transom on the back and mount a good size outboard to push you up the rivers. once finished just grind of and paint

e dual use of KPH and MPH is :- River cruising in KPH. 2KPH=1Knot. All rivers have speed limits in Knots.
Canals use the MPH system.
Rule of thumb:-
1MPH=1.6KPH
1KPH=.0.8MPH
1Knot=2KPH=1.6MPH
Thanks Brian. I just double checked that and to be more accurate 1 knot = 1.8kph (multiply the knots by 1.85) and for mph it’s 1.15 ( knots time 1.15)

That was interesting! Gorgeous mist toward the end. I moved up near the Chesterfield canal a couple of years ago, I'm very slowly getting more interested in everything to do with canals. I've not seen locks that size up close, lol! About the power issue with the current, I see you're often out in the middle of the river, but from what I've read, you might be better off nearer the edge. The current can be slower near the edge, and sometimes there are even eddies which help you along. Just something I've read. I'm not sure the Trent has that much in common with the Niger, ;) but it seems to make sense to my inexpert mind.

know these waters very well so I feel I’d want to avoid tree roots/branches and any rocks or banks that can lie on the bends in particular. But I’ll be thinking about getting over as close as possible the next time I venture back out on the river so thanks for the reminder!
@@RobbieCumming Welcome! but I guess you do need to be careful. Since I wrote that, I read something about flatboats on the Mississipi in the 1830s, before paddle steamers. With a good boatman, they could be all right, but if the boatman didn't know what he was doing, they could run aground often.

As I hea many years ago some of the rivers stayed using km for the tourists and its gradually spread over the rest of the uk system. If your going onto the river trent after Nottingham enjoy the 6knt current

@@RobbieCumming Still proud of that on a 6mph boat. Actually from the pub a mile downstream, however got through Newark, moored at pub topside of Cromwell. Radiod lock keeper to find time in the morning. Said I could go if I come now. With the tide so fast trip to Torksey. In the lock found my cutlass bearing had come off. Plus, typically I didn't have a full can of petrol for my reserve outboard. Chugged to Saxilby. Enough petrol for outboard to get to Lincoln. Walked over Pelham Bridge to Tesco for petrol. Outboard to Bardney, wasn't easy because it was weedy. Started 6am moored just gone 10pm.......not a bad days boating eh!

Don't know why the canals have KPH instead of MPH but if you want to convert KPH to MPH just times KPH by 5 and divide by 8 it doesn't work in reverse . ( kilometres being 5/8 of a mile ) .
