- Removing Rust and paint so this Narrowboat boat can be restored! job sheet was to prepare the surface so it could be over plated and remove anything that's bad or lose. If you enjoyed the video press the like and drop a comment would be nice to hear from you I read every comment and try to reply to everyone 😊
Please be kind and respect the fact these videos are a hobby for me if you want to see more content press the subscribe and ding the bell then you will be notified of my next uploads to see what else I blast.
As always thanks for watching much appreciated!
Hard to do for easy viewing :)
If you are a blaster and require help please drop me a message here. Please don't email or call asking for advice on how to set up or operate your Rig. I need to prioritise my free time doing work calls, emails and quote enquiries. I will always try to respond to comments on my videos :)

Amazing what a good sandblasting can expose what hidden under the paint 👌. Good job mate 👍. Got me pumped for a day's blasting myself 😉🤙🇭🇲🏴
💪😂 take it easy mate we both know how fast things can go wrong 😊👌
@Mobileblaster too right mate 😆 👍. Cheers legend.
boy the rudder sure is eaten up, as for rubber coating i used to work for a valve co from England an we sold several valves with various rubber coatings for slurries to acid mixed slurries an they are tough stuff rubber linings on them shrugged off the grit like it was nothing so im not surprised the coating gave ya some issues awesome work Mick
Yeah any sort of rubber or silicone blasters have a harder time removing
Thank you very much for a top job, one side has already got plates on and has had a 1st coat of paint. It was so much easier to weld. The customers are very happy. Thanks again.
Oh nice one have you filmed it? 😂
Sadly not, I was thinking about it though. There would be a lot more swearing and cursing than in your video 🤣
@jamesorton9929 😂 I suppose filming editing etc you really need to enjoy that aspect as it does take up alot of time 😎 I enjoy making videos so it's easy I suppose for me definitely worth a go to see if you enjoy that process too I'm sure folk would like to see what happens next 👌👍
I dont know why but i just love sand blasting. Its so satifying! Not so bad with big heavy stuff but leaving one spec of rust and it will come back ! Thanks for uploading.
😊 glad you enjoyed it, Comments like this make me feel like I'm doing something right thank you 😊 👌👍
Used to have a 900 lb clemco sandblaster . I miss operating it. I used to call it on unpainting equipment. ✌️❤️🍺
😂😎👌👍
Hey Mick, 85 and only been blasting 2 months but I love the progressiveness of the work. I know you don't paint but how do they control the flashing before getting the surface coated? I've learned a lot from watching you work and from your comment answers.
That's 1 of main reasons I only stick to blasting because soon as its blasted that's when your on the clock to get it coated. This project was to uncover all the potential problems and leave a good serface to weld to could be possible they have me back to prep for paint but as it stands it was to save alot of prep for weld 👍
@@pbysome it works out expensive 🫣 to give it s coat
You can do wet blasting with a rust inhibitor. However this is a mess and I don't recommend. Blast what you can and throw a this prime coat on it. Let it dry and keep blasting. You can switch to the other side of the boat too if possible. Something I've done in the past is contact the paint manufacturer and see how far they'll let the surface rust over if any. Do this in an email lol
To add, if you put thin prime coat, be sure to observe the overcoat window in the data sheets so you ensure adhesion when you return to build you primer or add sequential coats
@jmacdonald4681 it's best to leave the painting to folk that know 😏 and I don't lol it would be near impossible to blast and prim at the same time drying time would kill the operation even swapping sides dust would still be a issue
They are asking a lot of that Boat .. The Hull is just about Done for , Welding more Plates to it is only a short term fix …. And it also makes it heavier,
It's recently had a new base plate and the servay said it was OK above the D bar it will sit lower in the water but I suppose its still better than replacing for a new boat
Steel that has been through the abrasive blast cleaning process starts corroding immediately so good practise is to apply a primer coat as soon as possible but never later than four hours after starting abrasive blast cleaning, as long as the weather is not humid and always wear a mask to stop dust inhalation !Previous welder not removing spatter is very poor form also quality of some repair welding is rather poor .
@AnthonyTobyEllenor-pi4jq if it is kept dry it will last indefinitely 4 hours is a load of hear say yes it is best to get some protection on the steel as soon as possible but I've had Lambretta bits in my shop for over 4 year and they looked like they did the day they was blasted (dry storage I keep tons and tons of media and that's to stay dry)
Excellent work Mick. I enjoyed it.
Thank you 😊
Did he do the underside? Or doesn't steel rust if it's horizontal lol. Or is it so deep there's no oxygen in the water down there lol.
the baseplate is 10mm thick you mug!
It wasn't on the job sheet.
That has got to be one of the roughest looking boats I've ever seen you do, nice job!
😏 I've got a few bad ones on my Facebook page 😂 only before and after photos though Facebook MobileBlasting.co.uk 👌👍
In America we have to have containment around the vessel to minimize the debris field nice job though you see everything with a good blasting job
These videos dont show alot of whats happening All measures was taken to make sure no public was around all the equipment boats etc etc is on the owners private land and he owns the boat plus everything around it and happy with the mess 👍
@fredbrandon1645 are you implying I'm using toxic substances? Please know all the facts before making such a statement!
@fredbrandon1645 I will word it a little differently sorry for any confusion I don't film alot these videos arnt a how too the area was secure no public right of way the land owner is aware of the mess and the mess that's made is none toxic and fully approved insured and licensed. Please don't fink dumping toxic waste is exceptable I've taken all the appropriate measures to know what media I'm using the paint I'm removing and how far the waste is likely to travel taking all this into account setting the stall out and making sure the public cannot access this area or any other persons that don't need to be in this area. Just enjoy the video and don't worry about the stuff you don't see
Cheers from Sweden,, 👍😎🇸🇪
😊👌👍
Your accent is very difficult to understand. Your videos are great, but you do not seem to appreciate that your videos are watched in other counties, other than the U K. Perhaps slow down a bit and try and articulate more. Hope you continue to produce more videos, but with more subtitles.
Oh I appreciate every viewer that's the only reason I keep making videos 😊 thanks for the constructive criticism I've tried to work on my accent I'm a lad that hasn't ventured very far out of Yorkshire 😂 I will try that bit extra hard on the next videos 😊 (I find editing takes up alot of time adding subtitles isn't really something I can do I don't fink as I struggle with spelling and grammar) google dose do it auto but like you say I think the AI struggles with my accent too 😬 definitely something I'm going to work on 👌
Listen harder
They welded the pits and then over plated it 😬👌👍
Stupid question but what about the bottom - is that also blasted?
It wasn't on this job sheet but they do get done just not as popular as the sides
R'reet Mick, Getting a MOT on an owd car was a PITA when the 12 month inspection time came around but I'd be scared even more of the survey if I owned an owd narrowboat. 😓
Nice job of that one mate.
😬 I suppose its not too bad tho because you can still take the risk and not have the work done and go in 3rd party just that risk if it sinks 😂
Where are the sacrificial anodes???
They was cut off prior as the plan for this was to be over plate they wanted clean steel to see the extent of the work 👍
Someone didn't replace anodes...
I believe they was cut off beforehand as the lugs remained
@@Mobileblasterlooking at that hull I don't think the anodes had any attention for a long time!
@JimLahey21 this is were I'm on the fence with do they work I understand steel rusts (gives off electrodes) and putting a weeker metal for sacrifice these electrodes before the steel should in theory save the steel but I've yet to see a different in boat hulls with or without they all seam to rust at the same rate. For the cost and peace of mind I would have them fitted to my boat but unsure if they actually work 😏
Is that sandblaster grizzly gaz? Love your hiking and camping videos.
Nope I only make sandblasting videos 😎👌👍
I am English but l cannot understand most of what is spoken, not just because of the sound either. Whatever happens you did and l hope you got paid.
South Yorkshire accent is very strong I apologise for this I try to tone it down aswell 😬
Gladine doesn't need overplating. Couple of years and I'll epoxy it. Need to find out cliser to the time where you can blast mine.
If it fails inspection you can only get 3rd party insurance enter the water at your own risk 😂 not only the risk of sinking and the costs involved in that also the recovery costs cannot see a wagon and crane to all the locations that boats can get 😬 also if you come to sell the boat and its not got a valid ticket the value will be affected I would presume
This old girl has seen more that her fair share of neglect. Hopefully it will be cost effective to do a proper re-skin.
👌👍
I hate it when you fast back and forth. I realize you naturally want to but smooth strokes work much better.
It would depend on what ya taking off because I can see the layers if I did strokes on paint thats got runs init etc the fast moving works much better. If it's new steel or good steel with no rust scabs or bad paint then yeah a consistent slow long strokes works better but this isn't always doable as holding the pipe isn't just a matter of holding it you have the blow back and operators fatigue sometimes wiggle motion helps reduce the stain.
Surprising what gets revealed when sand blasting, needs replateing complete new bottom that’s going to cost a lot.
Yeah it must have been a hard decision to make repair or replace as I carnt imagine the total costs involved refitting out etc
There has been some dodgy welding on those old patches. Nice clean job, and thanks for pointing out the faults that need to be fixed.
😊👍👌
standard waterline corrosion, thats the part thats always vulnerable
👍
Last hauled out when Maggie Thatcher was PM!
😂
I sandblasted lorry chassis’ in Northwich in the 1970s. Did it for about 3 months. We used silica sand which I thought had since been banned. For cutting through the really fit rust we used black copper slagged (I seem to remember) which was amazing at cutting through rust. Some of these trucks made from 12 mm thick steel and rusted right through because they were being used to carry salt. On some of them, extensive welding is needed. It was possible to buy salt resistant paint but the owner wouldn’t pay for it. So we just ended up using a primer and Dulux gloss red
😂 usually case do what ya get paid to do haha yeah kiln dry sand (sillica sand has been banned since the 60s) I use iron silicate (copper slag and other approved media's mainly crushed glass 👍)
@@Mobileblaster I'm just curious why silica sand is banned. Isn't that essentially just beach sand?
@IHateRUclipsHandles615 yeah its because they cannot tax it properly 😏 no kidding once blasted it brakes up and the cloud of broken sand is highly dangerous to anything that breaths air
How many kilos of grit do use on an average to complete a job like this?
I think I've seen Serendipity on Cruising the Cut videos.
They are all different some don't take as much as other but generally around 400/1000kgs
@@Mobileblaster 1000 kilos WOW!
@patrickradcliffe3837 they all very on average I would pit 1 ton in the van on the hopes of bringing most of it back but some do take that much
Always wanted a go at sand blasting look really satisfying to do
It is fun for the fist few jobs then it's not so good 😂
Why don’t you do the bottom? Doesn’t it rust?
Wasn't on the job sheet yeah they rust just not as fast as the sides
love the little cork dead man switch. Going to make one for myself, just need to finish this bottle of red :)
😂 oh I would love a spare for the blaster I'm building if they are easy enough and cheap please share your findings as this 1 is from Australia I cannot find any at a good price hear in the UK
@Mobileblaster what?? Lmao just make it?? I assumed you did. Looks like a cork with an eyelet screw and some chain...🤷🏼♂️
@jmacdonald4681 no it needs to be very robust and positive also have the deadmans that's fairly important the closest thing in the UK is £175+vat
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
😊👍
Sandblasting in the outdoors. Cool.
😎👌👍
How much grit did you use
Not sure off the top of my head but I loaded 1 ton in the van and came back with around quarter or so I didn't count to be honest
Perfect timing i just got home from a whole day blasting xd Great job Mick👍
😂👌👍 I got rained off today and a Dock isn't draining so that's another job that cannot be done due to the weather isn't it good been self employed and having to rely on the weather 😂 so I thought I would crack on with a video 😎💪
@@Mobileblaster For how now long you been an self-employed sandblaster Mick?
@Moh4n95 aproxx 12 year and aprox 3 year part time
What the hell is he saying ??
All the important stuff I put subtitles on (I also apologise for grammar spellings I find academics very hard but working with my hands and problem solving is my gift) 😊👍 South Yorkshire accent is very strong and I'm trying to tone it down on the videos looks like I need to try harder 😂👍
How much do you charge ?
For Business Enquiries Please Email Info@MobileBlasting.co.uk Regards Mick
Is that the best sandblaster out there? Looks like it would take years.
I duno about the best but it's alot faster than sanding by hand and leaves alot better finish than any other method I know of 👍
The way you word it there Rick, is very telltale you haven't spent time, effort and parts of your sanity fighting rust in any real capacity.
Once you try cleaning a surface someone thought they were smart when painting with heavy rubber/epoxy coating with angle grinder, you'll be murdering to get a hand on Mickey's sandblaster.
2 seconds and that flapdisc is gunked up beyond feasible use, you can't do one side of a floorpan on a car quicker than Mickey did this boat with his sandblaster.
A grand job on that one Mick some rot on it though
Yeah definitely needs some titivation with the big blue glue gun now 😂👍
Blimey Charlie, that’s such a small nozzle!
You must not do any blasting? This is the biggest nozzle money can buy 👍
That's what she said.
Nice one mick thanks for your time😎
😊👌👍
boys that looks like a nasty bill waiting for someone ,,, hopefully they have known about it for a few years and have planned for the job , rather than it just leaping out as a nasty surprise.
I can almost guarantee you will save money getting a blaster in to do this work than DIY. After consumables and time to get it to the same standard of work a blaster will always work out cheaper. Even getting a professional blaster will work out cheaper than hire and the learning curve of doing blasting yourself. Very much like any other trade. This Boat has come to the point (40 odd year old) is it worthwhile repairing or replacing the owner did the sums and repair costs work out alot better than replacing. I suppose its like anything els we own maintenance is key for long-term service life
@@Mobileblaster totally agree ,,, but the point I was making was that if its planned maintenance from previous ut surveys not so bad ,,, but it would be a shock if it landed out of the blue.
@@tomthompson7400 I reckon with the amount of holes and water it would have been taking on they must have had some sort of indication something isn't right haha but yeah the costs involved to fully strip and refit with over plates would be bordering on is it worth buying new
@@Mobileblaster yep good point ,,, once the bilge pumps start running more than they used to , you know somethings going to get expensive ,,, theres nothing more expensive than a cheap boat.
@@tomthompson7400 as the saying goes buy cheap by twice haha
massive job there. Hope you got paid well.
Just another day at the mobile office 😊👌👍
You sure did a great job! Not familiar with narrow boats/steel boats, primer after repairs completed, then blacking?
😊😊😊😊😊😊
👌👍
Do these boats get sacrificial anodes fitted to reduce the corrosion?
Yeah I believe they was cut off prior to me blasting
Think you see a mounting point at 17:30.
👍
Looks like the old barge has had a hard life ! What would make the rudder get chewed up like that ?
I think it's just years of been in the water I'm not 100% on this but I think I heard him say its 40 year old 😳
@@Mobileblastermaybe if it had your treatment years ago it would have lasted a lot longer 😊
Thats corrosion and rust pitting. A couple zincs on the rudder would be a great idea. A rule of thumb is steel grows 11 times its original thickness if rust is not disturbed. A 1 inch steel plate turns into 11 inches of scale rust when completely rusted.
Your very through 👍 top job, top man 👍🇬🇧
Nice job!
Thank you 😊
it looks so fresh after you blasted it
Yeah it uncovers all the areas that require attention 👌👍
Couple of comments. Blasting with no attempt to contain the fly dust. Here in the US that would be a huge fine from the Ecology Dept. Not to mention the mess on any boats or cars downwind. Putting a plate over badly corroded steel is called a bandaid job in the ship building trades and is a poor substitute for doing it right and cutting the bad plate out and replacing it. (Whoever welded that bandaid at 23:25 should go back to welding school.) I was replacing the bottom shell on a WW2 LCVP landing craft in Alaska a few years back. The owner had a local native wire wheel the hull for 2 cases of beer. He came and told me there was "a hole in the back of the boat". The plate was so thin he wire wheeled thru it. Owner painted it with Sears Best exterior latex house paint.
This is what happens over the years and the owner of this boat had a hard choice to make scrap and buy new or repair and they did the sums and the boat yard giving a warranty as long as you would get with a new boat at a fraction of the cost is in their opinion a smart move I cannot see as a plaster (bandaid) because the boat is built with 6mm sides its worn down to 3mm in some small areas in 40 odd years then adding another 6mm plate all along the water line = minimum 9mm in my opinion it will be as good or better than new. How do you know I had no attempt to contain the dust? Did you walk round the site and notice the signs and gates locked? All the parked boats are owned by the person that organised the work the media used is biodegradable and approved media none toxic the area was under control and the waste was disposed of. These videos are just a sinp of what's going off that's why I don't list them as how too. 👍
Considering the level of corrosion you'd think the river was an acid bath lol.
😂 years of neglect I would say 👍
Here in the USA, you wouldn't be able to open blast a huge boat like that in a marina without a full containment surrounding the boat. I bet the surrounding property was a complete mess after you completed the blasting.
You guys don't have a law saying silica sand (kiln dry sand) is harmful to health? That's been banned in the UK since the 60s because of the free sillica. The media used was approved crushed glass yeah it's dusty but the area was controlled no public right of way and the owner of the Dock owns all the other property in this area even if the dust was to land on anything a hose off is the only thing required to clean it up. I don't make these videos as how too as a lot more is going off behind the camera to make sure this sort of thing isn't an issue please don't think I just rock up and blast a lot of information that is left out of these videos 👍
Would not be allowed to do that in NZ, even water blasting is only allowed with full containment control.
You should invest in a 3000kw laser cleaner. Little to no mess, no silica dust flying around will cut right through all of that.l. save money by not having to buy grit.
I can almost guarantee your not cleaning boats with a mobile laser if so how you getting round the fact you still need to sand the serface for a profile? I only use approved media's (sillica free)
About 18k. Yer right..
My experience very slowly with laser 2000w because it dont like aluminium paint. If he gonna metallize the boat then you need roughness and then laser is useless.
I agree laser is not so much mess with.
@glennrogerfagermo4339 I can 100% guarantee he cannot blast a boat to the same spec as this video with a laser and I will give him 5 days head start and he still won't be able to do the same spec. I'm not against laser as they have the place in serface prep world but to market a product and say it rivales a sandblaster well I will wait for that day 👌👍
@@Mobileblasteras a shipbuilder for 45 years in Canada I agree, laser is not the tool for this type of job.
