I know these things are often very precise frame perfect things that need ideal timing or setup, but its always really funny to me when a new breakthrough in speedrunning happens and its "They pushed up on the c stick" or "they used a known phase-through-walls glitch to phase through a wall" (Golden Eye) after 10 years of people not thinking to do that.
I remeber them talking about this in prey. where they were all confused how a runner was clipping through the wall. and the main reason is he was playing on ultra high graphics while everyone else was doing potato graphics (my guess is lag). parrently wall collision is dissapears between low and medium quality
I think the situation is in part related the classic exploration-exploitation dilemma. You only have so much effort/resources you can devote to your pursuits, and so you have to find a good balance between looking for more promising rewards (glitch hunting) or collecting the rewards you've already found (trying to get a world record run). If everyone just had the goal of lowering the game's overall time as low as possible, we'd see much more time spent exploring for more optimal glitches/routes. But because speedrunning is largely driven by glory, we see much more energy put into performing the best at the currently known route. Another side of it is that much of the time, the people able to do the runs aren't the same people finding new glitches. They're separate skill-sets, though obviously there are some people who can do both. I would also imagine just based on the barrier to entry, that runners are much more numerous than bug hunters.
@@skyemegakitty another reason I think is notable is I notice in everything. people don't normally think of the simplest way to do things first. most people will do the "it cant be that obvious" run around before implementing the obvious and the obvious obviously beats the current thing. i'm not saying its never the opposite sometimes its just everybody looks over the simple stuff because "it cant be that simple" a lot and it leads to situations where you wonder how it took so long when the solution was in front of everybody's faces all along.
I think the c stick one was that no one had ever seen it do anything normally. Then one guy happened to see it do something and everyone lost their minds seeing new possibilities. A lot of the walk through wall ones are usually terrain being super fucky in OOB areas. I remember in.... I forget the game... One of them... I discovered that when oob you had to basically walk on textures of walls and one step either side either made you fall to your death or fall inbounds. I think it was borderlands 2 in hindsight. You can't just wander where you want it's super anal. In other games the concern are certain flag zones for enemy/boss/item spawns that try and FORCE you to go the normal route

Former runner of this game here. Just finished watching this and the previous video. 1) Its crazy to think of how much has happened to this game since i shelved my copy 6 years ago, a Chauncey and King-Boo 1-Cycle were unthinkable at the time 2) The whole concept of In-bounds skews had actually been seen long ago, and even i never thought anything of it. Former PAL WR holder DeathJohnson has a clip still on his twitch channel today where he got what looks almost like that perfect skew. Its titled "Luigi's great faceplant." In hindsight, that answer was right below our noses the whole time 3) On the topic of PAL, i find it funny how so many years ago, i actually caused a category name-change because i uploaded a Proof-of-concept to the forums where you would drag the golden bats over to the area after wall-skip to do the first main skew (since the purple bats traditionally used dont exist in that version), thus making PAL OoB possible, and yet to this day its never been utilized, but has now made it the theoretical fastest version for this unholy category
i didnt understand a word he was saying but was still doing the poggers face the whole time, i love it when documenters like summoningsalt and lunaticJ get so enthusiastic. the speedrunning community seems so wholesome, lol! ive only played LM3 and cant wait for LM2 to be remastered for switch.
Great video. I remember loving your original Luigi Mansion speedrun video as someone who was unaware of Luigi Mainsion speed running as it was so cool to see how optimized the run was. When I learned about the new trick and saw the 5:14 run, I was shocked and amazed and knew there was a good chance you would make a video. Excited to see where the world record stands in a few months with this new trick.
I remember watching people do the original runs as a kid. Never thought it would ever be broken beyond that point. This is absolutely insane, kudos to everyone involved!
Great video again! Really Taylor deserves just as much credit as me for discovering the new clip, he was the one who started looking on that day, and then I joined in to help and just happened to be the one to find it first. I gotta say though, I do believe in the foyer clip someday... sub 3 minutes when

The best speed game ❤ All of these new discoveries are so fascinating. Great video!
wait, the route requires new mansion, which is unlocked by beating the game? then it's a new game+ run, not any%
Before starting the video I love the fact that I watched the first Luigi's Mansion video literally yesterday
I love Luigis Mansion (only the first game, sadly). This is just insane. It's like a different game from the one I've played.
I just finished the last video and this gem came out!
Glad I could see how the story ends!
Stumbled across this video just now. Love speed run videos. Looks like PabloRuns just made a 5:07 run. So cool.
Lotad is the best Pokémon at speedrunning.
Luigi casually breaking physics just to get his brother back:
I've played both versions (although i played twice the ntsc and like 8 times the pal version) but I never noticed the mice quantity difference.
I always thought the baby boss screamed:: VIAGRA VIAGRA!!!
Thank you for releasing this on halloween and holy cow I did not anticipate Chancy skip ever existing!
The last thing I expected to hear in the middle of this Luigi's mansion video is Lotad
I just watched your other video a few dats ago. The timing is is pretty good lol
This video exists to spite your original estimates of 8 minutes being a impossible barrier
Don’t forget an intentional 1 up was supposed to be really challenging to get but done easily and the tenacity and precision a person can have
It's actually insane just how fast you can beat Luigi's Mansion
Great video! That was an awesome discovery, for sure!
This game is held together by a single fucking toothpick
Now we just have to wait and see how thin the toothpick really is.

I would imagine the next optimization is getting the skew earlier with a different language, or finding out how to skew without mobs
Always wild to see hahaphd mentioned outside the Mario party discord… I forget people play other games lol.
i wonder if skews can be done with normal orange or pink ghosts, that way you could probably cheese your way into floor 1.5 earlier, although i havent played the game in years.
Just a theory!
Imagine spending months working on your Chauncey one cycle only to find out that someone found a way to skip the fight altogether
I feel like the C Stick Reveal is the kind of reveal that's like... Oh that makes perfect sense.
I cant believe you dont have more than 100k subs
Your videos are amazing
Cheers to many more luigi runs
Great video as always. Thank you for shining some light on the LM community :)
as soon as someone says the record can’t go lower someone is motivated enough to make it go lower
The more we speed runner's play the Luigi Mansion series, the more it breaks.
OH HELL YEAH CHANSEY SKIP LET'S GO BABY
I feel like the game will only gain 1 more time save before it will be called off for good, however, that time save might end up bringing the time to just barely a sub 4. And even then, it might be a TAS only skip
They just discovered chansey 1 cycle. And then immediately bypassed the whole need for it. So crazy.
Casually watching a Luigis Mansion glitch speed run video and Redial from Bomberman Hero just shows up, i cant seem to get away from it.
hey i heard you just got luigis mansion a hour ago want any ti- *i already beat it*
i was *just* watching your other luigis mansion video, and youve just made a new one :o)
If there's one thing i've learned about speedrunning, it's to never claim that "this is the final minute barrier".
Never thought I'd see the day when Luigi's Mansion got the equivalent of a 0 star run, but here we are! Insane what speedrunners can accomplish.
"This game can't get any faster." -every speedrunner before something else happens.
