I used to know a girl like this. Her dad worked so hard, doing loads of overtime. And she would buy designer clothes, make up, hair done. She even asked her parents for a house for Christmas and they bought her one. I knew her from college, I was training to be a paramedic, she was there doing a beauty course. Then one day she came in and said her dad was dead. He had an aortic aneurism that burst, and died instantly, before he hit the floor. And you know what, she never cried a tear for her dad. That lyric ' It's easy to hurt others when you can't feel pain.; Summed her up exactly.
Nowadays, you hear it literally ever other millisecond--NO ONE BATS AN EYE. 🙄 And then we be wondering why kids these days cuss and swear so damn much. 😑
People like that! Still out there! They suck! Celf CENTERED people like that NEED TO BE TOLD! IT GETS WORSE IF U DON'T TELL A B*TCH! GET THESE FKRS! GET IN THEIR POCKETS AND HELP! PEOPLE ARE STARVING RIGHT NOW!!!
They have had six number one hits of which this is one of their biggest number ones. In the mid-to-late seventies and way into the 80s they were a hit making machine.
"It's so easy to hurt others when you can't feel pain" is such a good line. This is one of my all time favorite songs. My suggestion is "Our House" by Crosby Stills Nash & Young.
I just love the look on your face when you hear something brand new to you. There's a sense of delight that's fun to see because it's exactly how I felt way back when I first heard it.
It was written actually about a guy who was a rival to Hall for a girl. They guy was the son of a restaurant chain owner. The song was a dig to the guy basically telling him you aren't a made man. You owe it to your father. Hall changed the words to girl because it sounded better. Yah, Hall has a trail of hearts across the country. Say it isn't so, Kiss is on My List, Out of Touch, I can't Go For That, Method of Modern Love, and Family Man are just some others. These guys are a powerhouse.
I grew up listening to this music, my mum is a massive Hall and Oates fan. She always swore blind that this song is the best written song ever and in a way I agree. The lyrics are so simple but so meaningful and the composition of the music is so genius
Another oldie but daaaamn goodie! My earliest childhood memories... one of the most greatest duos! Great guys. Soul... the soul.. The feel... the depth... YES! YES!
I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this song: in our living room, lying on a ridiculous thick red shag carpet, listening on my parents' wood veneer stereo that must of weighed 50 pounds. I remember being surprised at the word bitch. Must have been around 1978. It's still my favorite Hall and Oates song. At the time, the urban legend is that they were a couple. You don't even want to know what the urban legend about Rod Stewart was.
You Make My Dreams, Kiss on My List and their great cover of the Righteous Brothers' You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling...all great songs in a catalog of huge hits
When we first moved to Nashville in the early 90s one of the first musicians my dad did studio work with was Lee Sklar. My dad was immediately star struck! Legendary bassist who turned out to be an incredibly nice guy. I would spend time watching them work and just hanging around the studio as a youngster. Those particular sessions didn’t turn into anything big, but a very memorable experience.
Oates co-wrote a song with an Aussie band, Icehouse. The song was "Electric Blue" Oates said "If you don't release this song, we will. It's gonna be a hit." Icehouse did and it was.
My favorite line of any song comes from this gem by Hall & Oates. "It's so easy to hurt others when you can't feel pain" It's simple and to the point There are so many people in the world that line can apply to.
Speaking of Daryll's House: he had the always awesome Todd Rundgren on there. You SERIOUSLY need to react to some of his stuff. 'Hello, It's Me' is one of his biggest hits.
Dont usually comment on stuff like this but Jamel, you are a good man with a positive outlook and message and i have never been disappointed with any of the content you share with folks that just need to hear and view good uplifting content. Thanks for taking the time to put a smile on our faces. Blessings to you!
Can you do way back Wednesdays and play artist like Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway, and maybe big band Glenn Miller? I love Hall and Oates but I would like to see what everyone would think about some of the older artist. They were some of the foundation for what we have heard over the years.
This song sounds just as good on the tiniest transistor radio as it does on a high end stereo system. I hear this anywhere and I'm instantly 9 years old again; it's one of those songs.
"Yacht rock" is a meaningless non-designation; anything can be listened to on a yacht; no music requires a yacht. I don't think I've ever heard a convincing argument for the yacht rock designation; there is nothing musical that connects the various, so-called yacht rock tunes other than someone somewhere gave them this designation
Yes, one of my all time favorites by them. I will play this for people and ask them if they can guess who it is, nobody has ever been able to figure it out. This song is on their Abandoned Luncheonette album, when you open the album cover, in one corner it says ' Anything worth doing is worth overdoing, PLAY IT LOUD!'
So these days I listen to metal almost every day. But Hall and Oates is that band I grew up my parents always playing it around the house, and I WILL jam to any of their songs whenever they come on.
If you want to see some really great rock and roll jams look up any Daryl's House episodes you can find. He would invite artists to his house and studio and jam with them. Some truly awesome sessions with a wide variety of musical talent.
Rich Girl is really about Sarah’s new boyfriend after Darryl and her broke up. Her new boyfriend was heir to a fortune and that pissed him off. Hall & Oats worked hard for where they got.
That line about being easy to hurt others when you can't feel pain...that one caught ME all those years ago when I first heard this. LOTS of folks fit THAT description. (I just wish I knew what makes some people that way.) Anyway; another great song by Hall & Oates, and another fabulous reaction.
I just watched it and WOW! what a beautiful rendition of that song by 4 beautiful girls! Natalie would be proud you keeping love alive! ❤ p.s. that Mariah Carey high note at the end, just wow!! Best of Luck to you all! 👏👏👏👍
Awesome reaction. I grew up blasting this song in my car with friends but never felt the depth of this song until now. I used to listen to music as a teen but now I feel it deeply.
"Say it Isn't So" is one of my favs, check it out. Then, Darryl Hall has a series of videos called "Live from Daryl's House" where he invites famous folks to come over for a jam session. A guy named Butch Walker came over for this song, and his vocals are amazingly perfect for this song. I can't help but watch this video every so often, they look like they're having a blast. It always cheers me up! Make sure you hit the one with Butch, others join him for that song too.

Jamel, Say it isn’t So has to be next!!!
I LOVE this song. Darryl Hall's voice is almost as magnificent as his hair.
Almost. That’s a badass patch of moss he’s got up top.👍🏼
ROFLMAO 🤣
Years ago, passed through a hotel entrance by him and all I saw was that hair.
That is one luscious scalp stack
Well, apparently he hit the genetic jackpot. Because the hair is still there.

This was the 70s, not the 80s. Back when you could still hear the influence of Philly soul on their music.
I preferred 70's Hall & Oates!!
February 5, 1977
I remember it from the 70’s too. Totally different from the 80’s Hall & Oates
