Saw Joe solo 2 nights at the "Hot Potato" In LA Long ago. First night there were 10 people, next night, just me and my buddy and Joe. He played like the place was filled to the rafters for 3 hours. Bless Joe for being the best guy, salt of the earth, rest Joe and we will carry on! Two nights I will remember until my day comes. Thanks from Mike and Gary
I just can not understand how it is possible to play like this!:) I "discovered" jazz myself about a year ago, and have heard the jazz musicians ability to play fast and advanced,- charlie parker, john coltrane, wes montgomery, sonny rollins, dave brubeck - just to name a few. But it still amazes me to see and hear this kind of playing. It goes SO beyond the regular pop-music when it comes to rythm and technique:) And I love it! hehe..
The bass player is Canadian Dave Young, who worked with Oscar for 25 years. He often would play with Oscar because NHOP didn't like to fly. He's also an amazing classical musician (was principal double bassist for Edmonton and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.) Jazz is filled with great side men who never really received acclaim for their individual work but are valued by their fellow musicians.
THis is probably one of the most amazing performances.. EVER! i've never seen Oscar so flaming! The "duel" between Oscar and Joe is absolutely amazing too! :o Bass solo.. it's just one really crazy and VERY impressing performance!
@MrRad999 I know what you mean. I started playing clarinet in grade school and was pretty good. When I was 17 I discovered Benny Goodman - after trying for a week to come close to the master, I switched to the bass clarinet. The irony here is that Oscar quit playing piano for two months after hearing Art Tatum play Tiger Rag - so I guess the lesson is don't be intimidated - just appreciate the giants for their gift and work hard on your own.
Hello Hartin, I thank you for this video which you makes us shared and yes Oscar is one of by far better pianist of jazz as well as Joe in the guitar, and the others, mamamia than it is hell all this.
Must have been right around 1975 I saw Ella, Oscar, and Joe at the Golden Hall in San Diego, CA. Wow! Seeing these videos gives me the chicken skin once again baby.....
The bass player is Dave Young, a great bassist from Canada. Dave filled in for NHOP on many of OP's non European tours because the Great Dane didn't like to fly. Young also served as principal bass for both Edmonton and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras.
@jimraw1 For a wonderful exploration into Dave Young's awesome ability w/ the best guitarist whom has ever lived (or at least equal to), Lenny Breau, check "Live At Bourbon St." by the two. It has been one of my favourites since the moment I heard it. PS: Thanks to the poster for this great vid. Oscar is insane!!
@jimraw1 Thanks Silly question.I googled and quickly was answered.I know him.He cobined virtuosity and jazz-taste at great level.one can say a Ray Brown lets the bass more sing.
As unkr01 correctly identifies it, it is stride, not really ragtime. But whichever, those broken tenths are amazing! And he used to play them better before his left hand was diminished by tht stroke! I saw Oscar in 1980 in Chicago at a little cafe on Lake Shore Drive. Solo. So close he was sweating on me & my brother. pre-stroke. he was and remains the best there ever was. The rent parties up in heaven must be really something these days!
@30percentplusreturns The Queen just unveiled a life-size bronze statue of OP sitting at his grand, it is adjacent to The Art Centre in Ottawa (The Capital of Canada)
Oscar Peterson und Joe Pass, die Meister aller Jazzklassen bei der arbeit
Que maravilla poder admirar a este genio inmortal que bondadosamente nos enaltece al escucharlo. Mi admiración, cariño y respeto por siempre.
this is amazing stuff, all these musicians are masters of their instrument and together they form the ultimate combination in my opinion.
What an absolute gem of a find to post! OP and Pass....two mountains.
Feliz de quem viu!!!!!Deveria ser eterno.
I thought so too, until I listened to Resonance Records Marian Petrescu, please do likewise, it will make you very happy!
Oscar was a genius, he was fabulous and a great guy. Love you always Oscar.

Joe Pass is a bit too quiet, but I'm glad this recording exists at all, so I can't really complain.
Oscar was burning and Joe had to bust out his pick at 240+bpm! Virtuoso's - all of them!

Inimitabili
@Hamporkcheese He probably does, but I kinda like it that way. Still, the guitar and the bass should definitely be louder, at least on their solos.
Yeah
If anyone had any right playing with Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass was it. I would have shit myself scared. Nuf said.

That's why they called it a grand piano
Can somebody please tell me what year this video. Thanks
