The drummer switching from brushes to sticks around 5 minutes is so smooth and natural. 3 musicians so tight, this is one incredible piece. Masters at work. Thank you so much for sharing.
This music is like an instant anti-depressant. Something about it seems to communicate that for all the heartache and tragedy afflicting the planet, things will be OK in the end.
I dont think ive seen as calm a performance as this from Oscar. My favourite parts of his playing are always when he doesn't rip out his lightening speed licks but instead just plays around the melody. He was a unique soul and it shines through his playing the most when he takes his sweet time.
Sometimes it's more difficult to play slowly. Your brain operates very quickly by suggesting the next note or phrase from what it "hears" before; one note suggests another, one phrase suggests another, one rhythm change/anomaly calls for the next. That's been my experience. I just try to let my conscious mind get in the background and let the music speak.
Aside from the obvious musical brilliance here, let's take a moment to acknowledge the genius camera work at 4:08 where the focus shifts to the reflection of NHOP's hand in the front of the piano. Perfect.
Oscar Peterson like Art Tatum before him were 'once in a generation' talents. We still have very very good players around; but VERY VERY few approach the likes of Tatum and Peterson.
When, as a young boy of 9 years of age back in 1961 I first saw and heard OP on British television I instinctively new I was hearing something that was going to lead me into a realm of sound exploration that was going to sustain and stimulate my budding musical ears for the rest of my life. I was not wrong then and his music and improvisational skills still excite and stimulate me to this very day.
Oscar the greatest jazz pianist. A brilliant genius of his genre. Just as Bach was probably the most important (or one of the most important) Composer in music history
I had an "Impossible dream". It was an old fashioned, back to back, piano improvisation competition. On the one hand, Oscar Peterson and the other, Johan Sebastian himself. After the set piece they improvised together, knocking sparks off each other. Oh why did I have to wake up ?

Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. He recorded and played with Oscar Peterson a lot in the 1970's. They even formed a trio with Joe Pass and recorded an album. Check out "Chicago Blues" from that album, if you have the time.

My mather is going crazy and suddenly I think she will die. Every time I listen to peace piece I think to my mom because often the peace was in her eyes and in everything she made. I wrote yet to you to say this idea: I thank you Bill Evans for this song, I thank you to give me the possibility to listen your excellent version, I think Bill would be very proud of it. when I listen your execution I think “Dam’n Bill he reincarnates himself in Emmanuel”. And one of my convintion become more solid. In music in the peace in the love nations doesn’t matter.
I got into Oscar’s music by inheriting some vinyls of my late father - about 40 years ago, while dad was still alive, but gave away his small jazz collection & focussed on classical music (primarily Bach). Most likely this is how Bach would play today - just great music.
Good grief, this is not only a brilliant performance, but one of the best piano suites ever written. I love that he didn't even include a black key until the 5th prelude.
Among modern inventors of melody, Oscar Peterson has no rival. That is because he entered the scene at a time when melodic invention was the principal improvisatory paradigm. When Art Tatum, who was the superior musician overall, matured as an artist, the melodic paradigm in jazz had not yet taken shape. Both piano masters are beyond compare.

The first time I saw him was in Paris, salle Pleyel probably 1985... alone at the piano, and I thought he was a wizard... What a superb piano player above all.
Wow! Now that was PERFECT. I don't know anything about Bach but if Oscar Peterson liked his music he must be worth 'checking out.' Nobody grooved or cooked better than Peterson. He is the reason there are so many great JATP recordings and all the great Verve recordings. Man he played GREAT!

There's only one comment I have to proffer. As fabulous and accomplished a musician/artist as Peterson most certainly was not superior to Art Tatum.
