I wrote this after listening to Oscar My loniness now is to celebrate our love of that summer I reach for the stars that we used to count The kisses the sweet words were our palace I don’t know how all is gone My heart aches ...but with joy our summer comes whenever I miss you
Three years before his death and after a stroke that affected his left hand, Oscar Peterson still outplays other jazz pianists. I started listening to his music as a child in Tokyo and Yokohama, and later in San Diego, where I grew up. My dad was a big fan, so Oscar's music was always playing on the turntable. December 23, 2017 will mark the tenth anniversary of his death. We miss you, Oscar. You and the trio have quite a few colleagues to play with in the best jazz club in heaven.
As Jazz musician,This is the pinnacle of music.I want to be able to communicate my feeling like oscar does to his audience thru his music. This is the one of the most amazing compositions Oscar had ever written.
The first day of summer 2018 will begin on 21th June 2018, at 17.35 according to Toronto time. This song by famed jazz pianist and composer Oscar Peterson is one of my all time favourite ways to celebrate the longest day of the year. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
I agree with the comments about tone. Oscar's superb touch (honed no doubt by many, many hours of focused , dedicated practice) allowed the instrument to sing. To my ear few others have achieved such supreme technique - perhaps Rubinstein, Horowitz, Loussier, ... And of course a magnificent piano.
Both played different styles of music - both coming from backgrounds of playing classical music. Each successful playing his own style. Oscar gravitated towards jazz. Bill Evans played a modern classical style often confused to be jazz.
Yes.. both were my the great piainsts for more than 35 years.. but then, despite his short period of life span.. Michel Petrucciani was my beloved one... and the latest ..Lyle Mays,as modern keyboard-pianist also my favorite one... too. ... love all of them ..... salute !!!! 😊❤❤❤
After a hand full of times listening to this video, for the past few years, I still say that this is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written. It just takes me back to good times with my Dad, who himself with a jazz pianist and a huge fan of Oscar Peterson.
I have never been one for concerts. I have always preferred listening to music whilst walking outside, minding my own under a blue sky. Some things however, just some things, I wish I could share with that someone special. This would have been one of those experiences. Rest in peace.
Che bel suono di pianoforte, non parliamo del pianista e del chitarrista..... Io ne avevo uno che suonava così e ora non c'è più, le persone si apprezzano dopo.....TUTTI musicisti eccezionali in questa raccolta!
Even though I listen to Bill Evans every day, I do think not just this song but the majority of Oscar Peterson's work is a masterpiece of great value in the world of jazz. The bass and guitar solos are complimenting the tone and the mood of the piece with great respect and humility. Whether they are the same or relatively the same speaks no volume to me. The magic is in the tone one produces with their instrument. I could care less how many notes per second one plays, leaves me completely cold.
Daniela, I completely agree with your reference to the "respect and humility" both these wonderful magicians on piano brought to their music - and like you, I seem to spend a little time with both, most days. They're immortal! Warm regards - Garry
IL EST DANS LE PANTHÉON DU SHANGRILA DE NOTRE HUMANITÉ!!! SON CORPS ET SON ESPRIT, FURENT DES NOTES MUSICALES COLORÉES, QUI NOUS ONT TOUJOURS ENCHANTÉES, POUR SOULAGER NOTRE SOUFFRANCE...!!! Directement de Salvador-Bahia-Brasil.
@ MusicaAnimalis Thank.. you for posting this beautiful piece with exquisite performances. It is disappointing that you could not be bothered to include the personnel of the rest of the trio .
Can someone help me solve a puzzle? Are "When Summer Comes" and "Requiem" the same Oscar Peterson masterpiece. I have listened to 100s of video and audio versions on here and on off-the-air concert recordings. To my amateur ear, they sound like the same composition. If they are distinct, could someone post links to the 2 that most clearly demonstrate they are different. Thanks. Under whatever name, this is the most beautiful music I have ever heard.
Much better version than the more well-known one from Vienna concert. More controlled playing from Oscar and Alvin Queen is a lot subtler drummer than Martin Drew. The guitar and bass solos are almost identical though. The song is pretty but hardly a masterpiece some people make it out to be.
Ulf and NHOP are speaking in a language created by Mr. Peterson. So, the fact that they sound similar is a testament to their ability to understand that language. Lesser players might have strayed in different directions. These guys are simply too good to detract from the incredible tone and feel laid down by the incredible Oscar Peterson.
Just kept listening this song only for 3 hours. What else do we need?
Besides Oscar Peterson on the piano:
NHOP bass
Ulf Wakenius. guitar
Alvin Queen. drums

In sweet memory of bygone summers and loved ones long departed.
Mr Peterson music is a remedy to insanity
Less is always more. You are missed Oscar, very much so.
Brings tears to my eyes...
It's gonna play at my funeral, for sure !
The very best pianist and human being there will even be.
This and Requiem are my favorite ballads from Oscar. They both bring a tear to the eye with their absolute beauty.

Wonderful ;some jazz musicians could take heed & play for the tune not merely show off their speed & technique👍🙏🏴. Thanks for posting.
Sensational guitar work. I am also a Joe Pass enthusiast. This ensemble just flows so elegantly. So nice, so nice. CMJ
Charles Jensen it’s the swedish guitarplayer Ulf Wakenius. A former friend to mine.
This one is the MASTERPIECE!
Bill Evans and Oscar are both maestros who will be remembered for decades to come.

Try Requiem from Oscar. It's the same absolutely enchanting piece as well. I still can't listen to that without shedding a tear.

Beautiful, just beautiful.Oscar peter thank you for such a nice Jazz.
Utterly gorgeous
Mr. Peterson could feel every note he played....true gentlemen and musician!!
E immagina che la mano sinistra era semi-paralizzata. Uno degli ultimi concerti.
