This guy is so good the piano practices scales after he gets done playing.
These guys all had monster classical chops. Bill Evans went through conservatoire. The reclusive pianist Dwike Mitchell allegedly would "warm up" by picking a Chopin Etude and then picking a key to play it in. He could play them in all 12 keys! I believe I read that in Zinsser's book "Mitchell and Ruff."

Thought that was sweat he was wiping away, but if you zoom in, he's just oozing talent.
One has to remember that studio / stage lights in those days were extremely hot… pre LED lighting technology! Those musicians were cooking under those lights with all those coats while attempting to make it look right!
Every time I think my piano playing is getting pretty good, I just watch this and I am humbled like a fighter who just got their ass whooped.

I was fortunate to have heard Oscar live on two occasions in New Orleans and to interview him extensively before the latter concert on Tuesday, May 3, 1983. He was a very sweet, soft-spoken man with some of the biggest, roughest-looking hands I ever saw. We stayed in touch for several years after that, and I once sent him a box of fine linen handkerchiefs for his birthday (I like to think he put them to good use while playing piano).

wow cool story, Mr. Peterson had a cottage just minutes away from my folks tiny secluded hideaway, i found this out far too late , as i cant imagine the vibe that would have been created listening to him among the trees and water of Northern Ontario. Im sure he is probably sitting on his deck now just resting and taking it in. RIP Mr. Peterson

I think they were mesmerized with just how lost Oscar was inside the music and the intensity of his performance. So the focus wasn’t his nose... but rather the sweat that was dripping from his nose as his playing reached orgasmic heights

in my humble opinion, overall, the best jazz player ever (which is a bold thing to say, I know). He had it all: dexterity, taste, soulfulness, sophistication and uniqueness.

I love Monk, I think he is a higher artist than Oscar but his technique is a little rough.

Sorry guys but I have to disagree. I seldom look at artists one is greatest. At a certain point there are 5 or so individuals that play so well they are all great in their own way, and it becomes a matter of subjectivity. I am a piano player and listen to Art Tatum and just sit back and go...my God, how is it possible? Tiger Rag, which I cannot play well enough to perform shows Tatum's left hand off to the point you believe there must be 2 piano players at work. I love Oscar and play his stuff, but Art was from a different planet.
Just the greatest. Saw him at Dallas Brooks Hall Melbourne Australia maybe 1974?? You could never be disappointed. The absolutely stunning musicality and dexterity, orchestration, block chords. For My friends albums fantastic. Pinnacle of jazz.

My mother RIP saw Oscar in 1939 at her local church when he was just a teenager. She remembered it for the rest of her life.
To my ears he was there or thereabouts most of the time. Check out Salle Pleyel with Joe Pass
Oscar Peterson, Toots Thielemans, Bill Evans, Michael Brecker are people who everything they did were on their maximum. I never heard Oscar Peterson playing something mediocre. He plays the best, or he doesn´t play.
nylonsteel it was definitely not his fault or anything like that but on his latest performances after the stroke you could tell that he was not the same. At least we can happily say that he went peacefully, unlike most other jazz players
Oscar said in an interview that his speed and dexterity came from years of classical training. My parents are huge fans, so I grew up listening to Oscar's music. The eleventh anniversary of O.P.'s death just passed on December 23, 2018. Old age and a stroke did not take away his extraordinary talent. Rest in peace, Oscar. How we miss you.
One of the many greats I had many chances to hear live-- but didn't!
People like him are just naturally gifted, but i'm sure he benefited from his classical training nonetheless.

I saw Oscar live at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor sometime in the early 1980s. Solo piano. What an evening.

What I’ve always loved about OP’s playing is that he’s always humble and has a big heart filled with pure joy. He’s never cocky, always down to earth although he sure can play fast like a machine at times. He always plays straight from his heart and it can be clearly heard. 😊

It was a great honor in my life to have met Mr. Peterson as a 17-year-old youth at Steves Music in Toronto in the early 80s. He was actually looking to buy an 88-keys, Fender Rodes, electric piano.
Ive just started playing the piano at 64 years of age and I have just played twinkle twinkle little star, I then mopped my brow with my handkerchief just to give me some idea what its like to be Oscar.
The fluidity, the sheer inventiveness, the stupendous articulation, the tremendous overall architecture, brilliant swinging of 16th notes, mastery of runs up and down, the brilliance of unison 2 handed runs, fabulously executed turns, chromaticism, tritonic substitution in block chords, modal playing, extended syncopated riffs, Just BEAUTIFUL, thanks for making the world bearable OSCAR x

I remember hearing Ray Charles talk about Art Tatum...he said Art could be drinking a beer with his left hand, playing piano with his right & you wouldn’t know both hands weren’t playing.

My dad was a piano tuner for Steinway. From 1947 til 1990. I was blessed to have inherited his taste in music. Oscar Peterson was on the top of the list. Jazz is definitely a way of life. Thanx for your post.
I was lucky enough to hear Oscar Peterson at Ricks Cafe Americain back in the early 80's in Chicago. Sat about 10' from him and NHOP. It was one of my best concerts I ever heard and I heard it with my dad.
He was in Chicago in 1961 at the London and recorded a live set there. It was and is masterful. But truthfully, beyond that.

Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans are the absolute immortals of the Jazz piano.
My favorite is the climax of tricotism. Hard to believe its not the at the top.
It always baffles me how camera operators/tv directors decide to go away from shots of the hands or broad angles that capture the entire performance to static shots of the inside of the piano or long shots of a player's face. Could you imagine an NBA game where they just show shots of the rim waiting for the ball an usurping any of the athleticism in how it gets there? smh

Unfortunately the production crew is most likely attempting to sell their product to a wide range of audience. They are also most likely attempting to be artistic in their own way as well. This is unfortunate to musicians as I would love to see his hands as well. Another commenter mentioned the camera man finding Oscar's nose more interesting than the smoke coming from the keyboard lol.

One interesting thing about Oscar Peterson was that he could analyse in depth the piano playing of other pianists.

He is a band within himself. I could listen to just him all day
I saw Oscar and the quartet open at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in LA for Ella Fitzgerald. They were supposed to do a 30 minute or so gig.... They played for almost an hour with Ella in the wings laughing and urging them on and then she came out and did her whole program. T'was a magical a night as I've ever heard. The "quartet" that night was Oscar, Joe Pas, Louie Belson U Ray Brown.... Magic, magic, magic.....

I can't tell you how jealous I am of your experience! You are so lucky. When I was 7 or 8 I got teased by my friends because Ella Fitzgerald was my favourite singer. Oscar, Ella and Brubeck were a staple in my house growing up. For which I will be eternally grateful. My grandfather's casket was carried from the chapel to an Oscar Peterson solo. I guess it must run in our blood.

Yes, as I said in my original post, it was a truly magical evening. I think the thing that also contributed was the look on Ella's face as she watched from the wings. It was nothing but pure enjoyment of and appreciation for all of the musicians in the quartet that evening and the great music they were making! She even started her set "late!"
If you haven't found it on U-Tube, Google Oscar Peterson & Andre Previn together. It is, I think, a three part interview of Oscar and, at the end, he and Andre played together on side by side grand pianos. It brought back memories for me of when Andre was on the jazz circuit and a couple of his jazz 33 1/2 LPs that I had at that time of his solo work.

At the time of these recordings te A/C was recently introduced and prohibitively expensive. You can see in his later performances he doesn't sweat anymore and that is the reason why
1. It was probably expensive at the time.
2. Ever tried playing with cold fingers? Your hands will stiffen up.
Right, he really did. But at 6'3" tall and 250 lbs.,this iconic virtuoso perspired a lot when performing whic is why he kept handkerchiefs with him @ piano. RIP dear OP😍

@Mr. B I don't doubt it for a moment, however there is something there that defies "just hard work".
No classical music pianist comes close to this genius: no hot, 5-star hotel korean female pianists, no russian tonal players, no nothing, not even Yuja Wang: they all make mistakes. This guy was flawless and still beebop'd most of what he improvised on the instrument. He/she is the Ella Fitzgerald/Oscar Peterson on piano/ vocals. And he played without notations 😅😅😅. No muss, no fuss, he's way across A plus.
Oscar Peterson is amazing. Love his music. He was also born in my home town of Montreal. I agree with you 100%. You had mentioned classical pianists in your post, please check out Cyprien Katsaris a giant although not of the popular variety we are accustomed to. I think you will be impressed. WeZ yup, I think it just goes over the heads of the average listener because pop music has been dumbed down to basic harmony and a beat with a catchy lyric. People don’t have the attention span anymore

Oscar Peterson was my Dad's favorite musician. He even got to see him in concert (I was not invited - I was just a kid). From my Dad I learned what great music is. Thanks Pop. This one's for you. I know you're jamming to O.P. in Heaven. I'll see you again in the bye and bye.

I heard Oscar Peterson live in London in 1984. Of the truly great jazz pianists, I think Peterson was the best at accompanying within a powerful rhythm section. Technically outstanding and he had a long life, unlike Tatum, Garner, Evans and others. Always brilliant at uptempo blues. A music teacher, Mr Ken Morrell, who helped me with my basic beginner jazz efforts as a 12 year old and who was a fine pianist in his own right, told me how he had met Oscar Peterson and asked him about some of his chords and harmonies. But apparently Oscar Peterson had preferred to talk about photography!
My son tried some of his chording... he said he couldn't reach his thumb and pinky finger far enough, lol. We both were always amazed and entertained. Cheers!

Great stuff Indeed! Absolutely one of that All Time Greats! I listen to Oscar quite a bit. Can't get enough of his repertoire. Even though Art Tatum is considered THE best, and Oscar admitted to being intimidated by him, I still think Oscar is more musical than Art and I prefer Oscar's playing. Art gets going so fast, that the music begins to become abstract, and you can forget what song he is really playing. I find it a little tiresome at times. But not Oscar. He really knows when to come back to the beat and theme of the tune. And he can groove like no other!
Phineas Newborn Jr. is not far behind. Phineas impressed Oscar the first time he heard him play.

I've rewritten this comment so many times, trying to compress what should be an essay into a comment, but here goes. Tatum was and still is the undisputed king of keys, but for playing in a group I think I would have to choose Peterson. On a broader note, I'd like to acknowledge the importance of these musicians in the progress of not only the states, but also the world. Music was the only language in which the American Negro had both the availability and the means to express him or herself in the world. If you will submit to metaphor, Art Tatum and Jelly Roll Morton were the seeds, which gave fruit to Peterson and Armstrong, but it was King and Malcolm who harvested them. The modern civil rights movement building on the achievements of musicians as the indisputable evidence of their cause.
Art Tatum constantly makes mistakes and corrects his mistakes. I bought his transcriptions, but did not learn for this reason. Oscar, on the contrary, almost never made mistakes after the age of forty. But the main difference in my opinion is that Oscar constantly asks questions and answers them, either with a phrase or with harmony in his left hand. It's interesting to listen. Art's answers are virtuoso passages. Oscar also plays passages, but, if I may say so, with a more harmonious filling.

Many young people still don't know the great genius of Oscar Peterson, so they get illusions about some old mediocre pianists if that time that never had such value even at the time. Guys like Peterson, Bill Evans, Clare Fischer, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, and some others are true, incomparable genius. 🙏🙏👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

The undisputed King of jazz piano! The Trio with Brown and Thigpen was just so tight. That rendition of Hymn to Freedom, my absolute favourite Jazz tune, in Denmark, was next level. I wish I’d been able to see a live show of his.

Be it great keyboard technique where the bassists and drummers struggle to keep up, or a beautiful ballad, Oscar's genius is fully apparent. I am 72 years old and have been hearing Oscar since I was 13. Nice compilation.

I was taught classical by a concert pianist from age 7 to 14 or so and played in blues & jazz clubs from age of 15. I cannot get the 8-12+ point rolls he does with 1-2 fingers on my 88s without having a concert grand due to the action on the 88s. I have studied his phenomenal gifts although I never got to play with him, I will once again spread his music live on stage as best as my gifts & instruments can handle it 😞🎹🎷✌🏻
