Epoxy tops are better looking
Kathy
What was the name of the materials you used for the countertop?
I see people in the comments criticizing him and saying that he did things wrong when no where in the description does it say “how to professionally remodel your kitchen”. Great video guys
I professionally resurface counter tops. The product he used wont last. It looks good in the beginning but ultimately will fail and start peeling.
@@rspivey53 I was looking at this stuff too from HD. What's your (cheap) suggestion instead for a DIYer?
@@FortunatePotato Take a look at leggari products. You can find their products on RUclips.
@@rspivey53 will do, thanks
Since resurfacing counter tops is what I do professionally. I know the product he is using. The product does not last long. There are a lot better products to spend your money on. Like Leggari Products. A very durable product.
My brain was telling me the kid was going get hit with the falling cabinet at 0:32

This, it made me smile to see the family here.
I would love to do this with my boyfriend but our kid would be BUGGING us to help! She's barely 4, so ya know.. not very helpful. I couldn't do this unless she's in school.

We need more kitchen remodels like this which are practical and affordable for the average person. Thanks for sharing.
Great job! Love the cost and labor breakdown. I can't wait to start my kitchen. I did my bathroom in a similar way... Cabinets, vanity, mirror, counter, walls, flooring... Purely cosmetic but the difference is amazing and it cost me right around a hundred dollars... Thanks for the video!
I really like that your kitchen is opened up and brightened up, especially at an affordable price. It looks nice. Thanks for sharing your remodeling experience. It gives us more ideas to think about.
Just a helpful tip, make sure you de- Grease the cabinets before you Prime/Paint, this will help ensure that your product will stick to the surface your painting, preparation is 80 to 90% of your entire paint job.good luck on your future projects.
"the Joy's of home improvement" this video is so nice !! 10/10 I wanna do this to my nonexistent house
Thank you for sharing your experience! My husband will no ever, ever to anything to the house! " God bless you!!!! Your wife is a very lucky lady, I see she's also helping out " beautiful couple 💑.
The cabinets and countertops look great. Awesome job .
Blessed be to you and your family 🙏
I love how real you keep the process, because most youtubers just make it seem like it's so much more work or lime you need magic to remodel a room like them haha
Wow! The removal of that top cabinet made an immediate difference
Yes it did, opened up the room
This video was INCREDIBLY helpful thank you so much for actually showing the process, I’ve seen lots of videos with just a before and after if the cabinets being removed and I had no idea that that’s how that goes 😅 great video!
You did a wonderful job!! I love how the redo brightened your kitchen and gave it a clean look. I'm in the process of redoing my kitchen now, and you gave me a few great ideas. Thanks.
nice budget renovation! I like that you took the time to explain the little details that most people take for granted, like installing a light! nice job!

I have watched quite a few kitchen DIY Renovations and I wanted to compliment you... you explain things very well for some of us who don’t quite understand how to accomplish this task. Wait! I’m 30 second in and I already love you 😂 the way you threw your tools on the counter ..... thats how you start a remodel project!
No comments from anyone? Not even a hater? You did a great job! I'm looking to do inexpensive kitchen update myself so checking out a lot of RUclips remodelers for ideas. Taking that cabinet out opened the room up! Bravo! GreAt job!
Thank you very much. I was waiting for comment lol! It's been almost a year and we are so glad we did it. Go for it!!!

looks great! want to redo my kitchen cupboards as well but everything is much more expensive here (Jamaica) ... plus my countertops are a weird sealed finish so not sure how I'm gonna tackle that.
This is beautiful. We watched this and went to Home Depot and the reuse store. Thank you.
Great remodel on a budget! Love the cost and time breakdown. I would love to see more from you guys. Maybe a bathroom update?
Removing that one cabinet was an improvement in and of itself . Thanks for the video.
Nice job on the mini kitchen remodel. Funny how a little effort can yield such nice results and the best thing is, you did it yourself.
Iv painted my kitchen cupboards once into a lovely french grey, now I’m starting on them again for a nice white/grey shade ( didn’t want just white so it was perfect for me to choose it) , Luckily my work tops are black/grey already!
You did a lovely job .

Wow, what a transformation! Great job! I have to remodel my own tiny dark kitchen so I greatly appreciate all of your helpful steps and advice. Thank you. Beautiful job!
This is a job well done. It was very tasteful, especially the replacement of the light over the sink-well- the entire area really. As soon as you took the upper cabinet down, it opened the room nicely.
Thank you!
This is such a great remodel! I'm excited to take some of these tips as I renovate my house right now!! Great job!
10 years wow thats amazing. My mom has been owning her home for almost 11 years now and I'm definitely thinking bringing my mom into the new year into today's. World let modernize her kitchen . This is awesome.

Paper template's always save the day! Good for you! I'm a 52 yr old wife/mother and when we bought this house back when I was 25ish,..my father and myself were doing work in the basement. Well, the window's had never been framed at all and it was built in the 60's so they were also not square. My Dad said, 'I don't know how we're going to frame these in, none of them are straight. Well, my building trade experience from high school kicked in! I was in trade's with my brother his best friend who became my high school sweetheart and husband of 30 yrs :)Template's!!! The window frame's came out perfect and my Dad was so proud of his daughter :) He couldn't believe I knew to do that, ha ha! Good time's :)
Great memory ❤️ I had a similar moment when my ex and I were installing countertops lol. I came up with a solution to a problem that had 4 men stumped !

I love your detailed explanations! New homeowner, no experience a all! Most diy videos are over my head. You all are great! Thanks
Great job!!!! I cannot imagine anyone NOT painting their outdated dark cabinets. My house was built in 1952 and has the original kitchen cabinets. NO clue what the original color was but I have them painted a high gloss bristro white and they look amazing. Since I have antiques I didn't want to put in modern cabinets. I have however updated the hinges and door knobs. Your kitchen looks amazing!
I subbed about two minutes into the video. I'm in the process of redoing my kitchen, and it's basically same color as yours. Thanks for all the detailed info. Very useful. Please make more videos like this.
Will do! Releasing one next week!
Great video! You gave me some ideas in some areas. The kitchen cane out beautifully especially for $500. You’re a good teacher/explainer. I could see you having your own home diy show. Thanks so much!!
Thanks! That means a lot. I just filmed two more videos and working on the third right now!
Wow that's the first painted countertop I've ever seen that actually looks GOOD! Way to go 👏
Wow! That looks great! I love the countertops! Love how you and your wife worked on this project together! Bravo!! Liked and subscribed!
Great job! I highly recommend a paint with self leveling additive. You saved a lot of money and gained a lot of experience! Well done.
Love the video would love to see more of your work this was such a motivational video for me to be able to start on my kitchen thanks for the detailed prices an things you’ve used an the hours it took you I always be wanting to find people who does that but they never do so thanks a lot for showing that helps me out a lot
For all the keyboard warriors saying you should have done this, that, or the other first, or use different styles, forget them. This was a great $500 DIY that really updated your kitchen and using tools and supplies that all homeowners can use.
My wife and I are just about to buy a house and this is a great video. We want to eventually renovate but this will save us some money and time for the first year or two until we save up. Thank you so much.
Great video! I love the quality and how you explained little details along the way. I'm starting a big kitchen project myself and this was very helpful :)
I really liked your remodel. Surprised there are so few comments/likes etc. Well done!
I have been trying to find videos on that countertop paint that includes counters like yours. Our countertops are blue with would around the edges just like yours! So glad to see that kit actually works we have been talking about redoing them!
Love the great new look! I know everyone has different personal orders and their own rules and regulations for how they renovate, but knowing this is a "couple level" project AND affordable was key for me. Thanks for a great video, cabinet drops and all!
Thank you! It was fun! I'll post an update soonish.
Kitchen looks so pretty!! Try using a magic eraser on the microwave and stove to get the plasic parts white again. (I have the same issue with white appliances in my kitchen. Works great and takes off the yellowing. :) You guys did a great job!
Great job y'all, gonna do this myself. You gotta throw out that standard screwdriver though and use a screw gun with a magnetic Phillips tip 👍
Nice clean look, looks like brand new kitchen. Big improvements to countertops & cabinets. It creates a much more open look to your house (some like that, some want the kitchen separate, some even want the kitchen walled off separate). Kudos. Thanks for vid.
WOW…… whatta difference! It looks GREAT! I particularly love how you transformed the laminate counters to a glossy granite-like top surface!
Beautiful! I would want the insides white too, so much easier to find things
You guys did an awesome job, kitchen looks great!!
You did a great job refinishing -remodeling. I am impressed. It is so nice that you were able to get it done for $500. Maybe there is hope for me now.
this is fantastic. Beautiful makeover and I love all the details you give for those of us who don't have much experience
Your white cabinets came out nice me and my son did mind about 2 weeks ago they were Brown old I just didn't like the look of them anymore so I decided to paint them white and he came over and help me we Prime them then painted them added new hand hinges on them because they had never had any and it made it look better because you can open it with a handle now instead of just touching the cabinet yours came out really nice too thanks for sharing just saying
I like to imagine the person typing that speaks really fast and says it all in one breath.
How much time take you?
Id like to start off saying I am very stupid Next on your to do list : Stop being a grammar Nazi asshole. 😊😊
@Alison Brown yes it really matters so we don't get a headache reading that run-on dribble.
This makeover turned out better than the original. For some youtubers with kitchen/bathroom makeovers, that is not always the case! It looks like it cost more than $500, and will improve the value of that kitchen by nearly $3 or $4K!
Nice job. It’s always amazing how much of a difference a coat of paint on the cabinets makes.
Thanks for sharing this. I did my entire house DIY style (ripped out everything inside except the laundry room cabinets, closet poles and a few light fixtures). However, the floors throughout and the kitchen remodel I had a company do for me. With soft close, Lazy Susan and extra shaker white cabinets in the kitchen to match the rest of the house, I'm glad I didn't do that portion of the remodel myself.
Not to criticize, It looks great. But the ground wire IS important, not as much for your LED light, but for the 110 power feeding it. Also NOTE: when working above a sink ALWAYS plug the sink 1st, it will prevent you accidentally loosing a screw or anything small down the drain.
Great job on your kitchen. I love the colors too.
I believe the fixture boxes in most old houses do not have a ground wire. Just hot and common.
If the fixture and the light are non conductive a ground connection is not needed as it doesn't really do anything
I appreciate this info for myself
"Hallelujah" finally someone that does things in a way that means we can all have a go!!!.
I cannot stand those people that talk in a different language to us normal folks and make it so difficult to understand what they are talking about and doing !!
Joanna Pocock I love it!! So human and real!!! Lol
Cause they’re show offs and usually just blabbing about nonsense.
Looks great! Perfect for a facelift if the cabinets are in good enough condition to work with.
Those simple changes made for a big transformation! So bright & open now. Great job!
1:18 She didn't like that cabinet being gone at all, huh? LOL - Amazing transformation. Job well done. Saved a ton of money!
I did the EXACT same thing to my kitchen. Saved a lot. I would only recommend the countertop paint for a temporary solution though. Mine started peeling over time because I wiped them down everyday.
Dalaney Rosa it’s because there probably was not enough Polyurethane on the countertops just to let you know :)
Taping or securing those cabinet doors prior to pulling down is a good option for safety minded folks.
Budget DIY remodeling can be fun to watch. And this is one of them.
A trade tip !! When sanding dry wall in small areas, get a wall paper sponge and wet it,wring it out and you can sand without the dust.
Great job
I'm not even 3 mins in and I'm obsessed with this channel. we also have the same floors lol... when that first cabinet came down it was so liberating!
Been looking for a simple and to the point video for a beginner for a LONG time..
Really helpful for a complete beginner. I've shared it with several single ladies trying to do updates on a budget.
this video gave me so much hope and life...yesss
My kitchen is laid out almost exactly the same as yours, several years ago I removed that same cabinet hanging over the counter no regrets there. About seven years ago I painted my countertops using a bonding primer and four bottles of craft paint (.97 cents) from Walmart and finished with a polyurethane gloss sealer, done this over laminate turned out beautiful and has held up beautifully. Also done the bead board, painted cabinets black using chalk paint, never again will I use that. I love what you've done, good work.
Paula Harris for our counters we also used the bonding primer and craft paint with several coats of polyurethane. I think its more flexible to mix colors. Works great and takes a fair amount of abuse. I was very careful not to get the obvious sponge painting pattern in a line by using a few different sized natural sponges and it turned out great. Sometimes it helps to tone down the white and gray sponging with more black paint so there is not so much of a contrast which can make it look cheap.
Did you guys use oil-based polyurethane sealant or water-based?
What's wrong with chalkboard paint?
Dana LeValley I used water base paint and top coating.
justice smith its chalk paint not chalkboard paint.
Awesome video! We just bought a house and wanted to give the kitchen some updates. LOVE this example!
Thanks for the video. We are revamping our kitchen now, and using your video as a key reference. I am hoping to put together a vlog for the process as well. Excited! Thanks again.
Thank you!

Dude at first I thought “holy shit is that bud From married with children”
Before the video got to the counter-top I was pretty sure they were marble or granite! Good job!!!
The pop-ups at the end make it impossible to fully see your list. :/
Very nice counter top! For an even smoother finish you can try some rubbing compound with a 6 inch buffer, depending on the paint (if it's a hard drying paint) that could smooth it out further. If you do try it, you'd probably want to do the entire process you did on a test piece like 12x12 and then buff, if it doesn't work out then no worries, just a test piece!
I subscribed just now! This video was great and very helpful. Thank you! I look forward to watching more!
I like that there was team work with the husband and wife. That's how it should be. You share a home.
What a beautiful job. Loved the countertop painting. Getting ready to sell our house but would have loved to have done a counter top in that finish a few years back. Kudos to your helper. (I'm usually the assistant, too). Lol!
You guys did an amazing job. Your kitchen looks so fresh and modern now.
Great reno. Even the background music of the video is nice so as not to distract from presentation. Hope you don't mind some ideas, may or not help you.
I would install a dimmer switch for the light above sink, and place some type of battery-powered light above bar/counter, or chargeable magnetic lamp you can place under cabinet over bar. You can screw on a flat metal plate under cabinet which the magnetic light will attach to. They have three light settings and last either 5, 8, or 35 hours on a single charge, according to dim, medium, or bright light setting use. They are small 8" tubes, make great task lights, or lower light while watching TV. They can be used for many hours during a power outage, are ready mobile lamp you can use anywhere about the house. Also you can do some creative things with battery-powered fairy lights for added ambience above the area over bar. They have many mustard seed sized lights that use very little battery consumption, about 150-200 hours on 3 AAA quality batteries. They add beautiful ambience for when you have dinner guests. These are just economical ideas of adding good lighting options without having to go into the drywall and run hard hardwiring. A small square wooden butcher block for a center work island would fit nicely in the open area of the kitchen. It has two lower slatted sheves where you can place perfectly-fitting wooden vintage style pepsi or coke crates in and use for storing spices. You can use the added storage space since you have a family, and not a lot of cabinet space. A center work island with cutting board surface plus handy spice/seasonings majorly enhances convenience during food and beverage preps, plus it keeps your food preps conveniently centralized and off the remainder of the kitchen counters. A white restaurant-grade cutting board can be cut to size for the top of the butcher block. You can purchase the clear rubber square grippers to stick under corners to prevent slippage on surface of cutting board while in use. A simple bamboo type Roman shade over the window would tie in nicely with the natural wood butcher block, giving some simple contrast and enhance the overall look of the window which is a major feature of the kitchen. Also, the white cutting board top would help tie in with the white kitchen cabinets.
Sonja Jordan Wow that was nice for all the suggestions to help update and improve the kitchen! Wish it were more helpful comments like that
Loved how everything came out. How handy it is to have a garage to work out of. One thing is that you guys worked your ways backwards once you removed the top ceiling cabinet. Glad to know and see that this happens in real life because life happens. Next time add an itemized price list on the items you purchased and then give the overall final cost (you forgot to include the added on countertop of the breakfast bar overhang along with the brackets underneath). I hope everything did come out under $500.00, of course I know the labor was free. You confirmed my long ago idea on what can be done to a freestanding cabinet to convert it into an island/counter breakfast bar.
Great job. Paint the inside of the cabinets too makes it look cleaner and gives the illusion of more space
Great job, but always turn the mains off when doing electrical mate. I know the lightswitch cut the power off, but all it would have taken was for your little one to come into the room and decide to play with it and you would be fried. Not worth the couple of minutes you saved. Great DIY though...
Fried? With 120? Nope. A mild jolt. Try the dryer outlet for a coffee substitute and an old breaker box for a "cry for help" suicide attempt.
Lol that's a wife 👍 " we've been ducking under this for ..." she comes out and says "9 years" lol so perfect

always such a shame when people do these types of renovation when they don't replace the old yellow outlets :(

Great Job!
One change. No matter what else being done, do the counter last, especially if it is being painted.
I know, but we had time restraints and so my wife needed to get it done then.
Why do the counter last?
brittany zwerk Incase paint drips on them from cabinets etc.
Mask them
