My wife grew up in rural Appalachia and has pointed out to me that most folk music has a lot of the same core sounds no matter where in the world it comes from.
Most cultures have a tradition of using a base tone and adding harmonies to it. I believe it's due to early simple instruments like skin or water drums, flutes, didgeridoos and single/double string instruments which only allowed a small range in the same key. So naturally, people started to add layers to those same tones/keys. This developed into instruments and techniques like overtone/throat singing, double flutes, bagpipes, more strings with a base tone like Hurdy Gurdys, so many other string instruments I don't know the names of or how they play the fiddle and folk guitar. There are only so many possibilities on the pentatonic scale, so music tends to sound similar.
Norwegian Black Metal also has a lot of throat singing,- except it hasn't yet developed into overtones. Perhaps it's too young of a genre to have learned/discovered overtones,- because they haven't been present yet.
