I'm very happy that they keep the spirit alive. Small fast affordable cars. But as my GR Yaris Gen1 left the factory today, it's like a small slap in my face. I paid 3K euros extra for the HPP with upgraded doff and now they are stock. I am happy for every new owner to own this piece of machinery, but on the other hand time will tell how value will be of the Gen 1. All in all I like the looks better from the first version, even the new one got a good retro vibe.
Do we know if Gen2 will be limited version or potentially available over a considerable number of years (provided there's no Gen3 hybrid etc.)? In case it's also limited to 25-30k units, Gen1 won't be keeping its value high for long...
@@alpanex21gen2 is confirmed to be entering standard production and join the Yaris Lineup.
@@alpanex21No limitation like the pre-facelift
"No limitation" or "No, limitation" ?
@@alpanex21like I wrote. No limitation. The pre Facelift was build 32.000 times so far.
Let's goooo 🥳 excited to learn more 🤩
In the JDM literature for the current car, Toyota calls the rear "double wishbone/coil spring." Also, the upright handbrake is only for the RC model, but also available with the auto.
The upgraded pistons are not new to this car. They are also in late (2023) cars.
On a 1:20 circuit here in Japan, the new manual car is about a half second quicker per lap. The auto car is a second and a half quicker.
I know people at Toyota, too 😉 Cheers.
I have a MK1 produced at january 24 so i got upgraded pistons? And can you tell me, what else improved over time? And where can i inform myself about this changes (online)??
@@dasgelbevomei4449 You got all the best of everything ;-)
Don't worry about your pistons. Problems in this area are almost exclusive to LSPI onset from a "tune," the use of improper oil, etc.
Afaik the fly off handbrake is an option for the japanese RC model, as that model is mostly turned into race cars.
The want for this MK2 is strong! I hope most of the current aftermarket upgrades will fit. Front suspension for example has a new design, so we cannot use MK1 coilovers.
I'm quite interested what parts us Gen 1 owners can use - especially the lower control arms
Looks GReat ! All this is very exciting. Thanks for uploading Phil, I am very much looking forward to your detailed technical review video once you get a Gen-2 model on your lift !
Not sure about the CVT (?) gearbox though, but I sure like the new dashboard layout. I hope they will feature similar to GRMN Recaro seats ! Personally, I would have preferred the rear seat deleted with a half roll cage as OEM or at least an option to choose from on catalogue before ordering. OEM anchor points for 4-point harnesses would have been cool as well.
They say that they have improved turn-in by modifying & reinforcing the front bottom triangle, which is an excellent idea when pushing hard.
Slightly increased power (+19 HP) & torque (+30 Nm), re-inforced engine internals have been included for better reliability.
I absolutely love the new front bumper (in three parts !) but a real Rally style s-steel mesh would have been better than the large OEM openings because the intercooler is still exposed to gravel impacts. Engine Oil cooler & Transfer box Oil cooler on each side of the bumper is a must. Wish they had included bonnet vents (like the Rally 2 car) to reduce lift and improve cooling as well.
Rear end grille above the (real !) diffuser is a good idea, but an oval-tipped central exhaust would have matched perfectly. Rear led design is cool too.
Don't know if they will be limited in number as was the previous one, but for the meantime the Gen 1 is still THE homologation Special to date.
Check out the EVO Mag article. They talk about changing the position of the front strut towers to better handle the loads of competition? Also a thicker front Anti-Roll Bar. This makes sense as I know others who race these cars say that they want less rear Anti-Roll, so stiffer front would address this by increasing the front/rear ratio. I’d be surprised if the rear is double wishbone but, would definitely welcome it. I love the rear lights now! Functional improvements to the interior are good but, it’s not a great look.
Hey Phil, the 1st already has double wishbone. It also says so in the EN Wikipedia article.
Yeah. It actually counts as double wishbone, but it‘s not a „real“ double wishbone. 😅
For me this new car has addressed a lot of issues with the original car, the dash getting rid of the sticking up screen, the higher mirror and lower seat.
i just purchased a seat lowering kit, already fitted a mirror riser, and now after breaking the passenger seat plastics, I'm quitting before I do the drivers side. As I feel the new order coming,
Exactly.
First, great video thx. On the pictures it looks basically the same (base frame). That also made sense, because then you don't have to make any major changes to the production line. That's why it may well be possible to convert many things to the old model. I hope that you can also use the speedometer plug and play in the old one. We will see that when the Car comes out 🙂
As soon as someone has something about the price please post here
It would be nice if GR version 1 could retrofit the new bumper, so that we could also add the oil cooler and make the engine bay cooler! And as always, great video!
I am going to the Tokyo Auto Salon tomorrow. If I could find somebody from Toyota, I would ask them and update the info here. Let's see.
Yeah. That‘d be interesting. But i don‘t think it will be that easy…
@@shitaopeng9080 Hey, please update us if you have more information!
So, I am just back from the Tokyo Auto Salon. According to the Toyota staff, the new bumper could fit into the old GR Yaris since the hood and the lights stay the same. But the old Yaris doesn't have the two oil coolers. The one on the left side is for engine oil, and the one on the right is for the AT. And since the new car comes standard with parking sensors and no fog lamps, we would have the dummy sensor in the front and lose the fog light.
And at least in Japan, the GRMN dry carbon hood and the rear wing could also be purchased separately up to the 21. Jan. But it seems to be a “GR Garage only” part and European dealers may not have access to the parts, as far as I understood.
those specs list both front and back brakes and diffs together, so the double wishbone is probably referring to the front and the rear suspension is not mentioned?
Wonder if they have solved the cooling issue on the rear. I can also see the AT gearbox intercooler being used as the center diff intercooler on the manual drive cars ( new product from HEL Performance😉). The car looks great. I just have to get used to the dashboard
I will be part exchange my v1 for a grey v2 as soon as I can put a deposit down in march. Can not wait!!! 😊
ALL of these updates need to come to the GR Corolla in 2025!!!
In terms of upgrades in rear suspension i checked the info for prelift and info in press realase and in both there mention double wishbone rear suspension and 8 inch wide wheels. Also they mention that the GRMN cars would get an update in terms of engine so maybe regular users of GRY prelift may also do some updates to their cars while keep it on OEM parts.
Cool video dude. I imagine you'll buy one as a daily, then modify that too!
I'm pretty happy with the MK1 tbh, there's not enough to temp me into the MK2. Happy with the package, except maybe the down pipe and exhaust!
Yeah. Might have to do that. 😅
Thanks Phil, they also mention an upgraded "valve train". What is that about? Does it mean they accept that the Gen 1 has issues in this regard?
We‘ll have to see about that.
Valvetrain isn‘t an issue as long as you keep it stock and not overrev it.
Love the wheels on that red one in the background. Are those RONAL R50s or similar?
They‘re Evo Corse Rally Zero
@@RotheliRacing Sweet jesus those are probably the best fitting rims to that car I've seen to date. Will put down an order for the 2024 GR Yaris as soon as prices are out, next will be to order similar wheels for winter use. Thanks!
TOYOTA 🏁❤️👍
Having owned mine since 2021, while new one has some nice cooling upgrades, being short never had visibility or seat issues, have added cooling mods and with DTE tuning box the only thing I will be really missing is the automatic transmission to help laps. Not sure it’s worth the loss on selling mine and premium paying on the new one
Thinking exactly the same. Mines a 21 with 8000 miles. Maybe a remap and Litchfield suspension to pep it up.
I saw some photos of the dash with the AntiLag light. There will be antilag from stock car?
At least something like that.
It won‘t be a true Antilag, because that kills Turbos faster than you can say Turbodamage.
@@RotheliRacing but if you have the feature from stock, you can tune it to be like a true antilag
ALS is only on japanese circuits via GPS. Its not in Eu model unfortunately.
@@jagymeister probably nothing that can’t be turned on via software 😏
Do you think the OEM oil cooler will be easily retro fitted to the original model?
Not really. I don‘t think that‘s easily possible…
Great video as always! The European press release says there’s a “new rear end crafted from Toyotas larger GA-C platform” but I think that’s the same as the GR1?
Thanks Mate.
Really looking forward to get my hands on a car. 😉
GRMN has 8.5” wheels, they are more concave.
Gen2 will have same 8” wheels as gen1, its just mistake in press materials.
What was wrong with the last camshafts Phil? Why did you change?
The new ones suit 400-500hp applications much better.
Hey there, thanks for your review! So they didn't do anything with "Rear Diff Overheating"? :)
Schau Dir das Video von Carwow (Matt Watson) mit dem zuständigen GR- Entwicklungsingenieur zum 2024er Modell an. 😊
the rear diff is still a sealed unit with a small amount of oil that will overheat. Instead of fixing it they put a hole in the under tray to funnel some air and got rid of the rear bias 30:70 mode and replaced it with a variable mode that constantly changes anywhere between 60:40 and 70:30 so that it doesnt get as hot (the more rear bias the hotter the it would get).
Isn’t huge amount of “hot air” (maybe 60C) better than small amount of cold (20-30C) air regards brake cooling ?
3:40
It still got the brake cooling system. 👍
wonder what the premium will be on the new version
At least they will be putting Torsen diffs in all the new versions
Hey Phil,
I'm still waiting for the delivery of my GR Yaris, its delivery date is set to somewhere around september, I think that was one of the last allocations that were made in Switzerland. Do you know what's going to happen with that? Is that going to be a Gen 2? that would be a bit of a problem, since I've already purchased the coilovers wheels and the brodit phone thingy. which would all be rendered unuseable for me then (except the wheels)
Since Gen2 will be at a completely different price point, i‘m quite certain you don‘t get a Gen2.
And the first Gen2‘s are supposed to be delivered in July/August, so not sure if you‘ll even get yours.
Allright, thanks for the quick response, I'll call my dealer tomorrow. Do you know if the Gen 2 will come to Switzerland? in case mine gets cancelled?
@@94ColoColo94 yep. Will come to Switzerland.
Orders will be possible from April i think.
It is not getting another EVO Project right?
No Sir. 😂🤣🙈
Springs, antiroll bar, torque split is different. Also control arms are said to be different
I‘m really looking forward to get one. 😁
@@RotheliRacingspring rates ca 10% higher
Antirollbar also stiffer ?!
yes in front. @@vollcare4076
it would be interesting to test drive. as a overall package not sure if it is much different espec with certain mods. @@RotheliRacing
I would swap my "old" one to this if the dash wasn't so hideous on the new one. It's so bad that it's not even funny.
I quite like it… apart from the hard shinny plastics that are obviously pre-production and unfinished…
I have heard, that you just can buy/apply for/etc it online. Might become something between annoying and interesting to get one :) Let's wait for the procedure and the price. If they push it too far I won't try ...
Agreed. Than i might get a GR86.
IF,the new Toyota auto gearbox is responsive and able to handle more power, then those who have spent £15k + on sequential trans will be 😮
Not really. Completely different thing.
And we don‘t know how the Auto Box handles 400/500hp, but i know that my sequential just laughs at that. 😅😁
@RotheliRacing That's why it's a IF,interested to see how it holds up,and compares as an experience nonetheless.
I thought they would release only with auto transmission and not only they offer manual but they've also resolved the two key issues with MK1: windshield visibility / mirror and factory seat position. Damn! Why are they doing this to Gen1 owners? 🙃
Yeah. They did them hard. 😅
We're kinda screwed 😪
Racing improves the breed.
100% buy one, so I can take some cool photos of it in the snow 🤣🤣
Yes Sir. Will do. 😁
Isn’t the first gen already double wishbone? I thought the first gen already has double wishbone. It doesn’t look as serious as on the Hondas but i think it’s still a double wishbone maybe just not a in-wheel double wishbone
Yeah. Unfortunately you‘re right.
@@RotheliRacing haha why unfortuantely xD i guess it's a good thing isn't it?
Gutes Informatives Video 👌
Wonder what the GRMN version will be like
Probably very expensive. 😅
@@RotheliRacing 😂. Oh well. While it’s nice to see the new version and watching the reviews of this new one on other channels I can’t help feel a little envious. I just got my GR just 9 months ago
@@mjolinir9 yeah. Imagine if you‘ll get it this or next month after waiting for two years. 😅
@@RotheliRacing that would’ve been a great Christmas delivery 😂. There some things on the new one that suggests improvements for the old one. Eg the ventilated rear bumper which improves cooling for the rear diff
Would this mean that version 1 risks losing its value ?
It was intended to be a collector's item.
It doesn't risk losing..unfortunately. It highly likely will
It most certainly will loose a lot of its value over the coming months especially once V2 will get delivered.
@@RotheliRacing so sad ! I bought this GR for the love of Rallying and for the exclusivity of this Yaris. Rare and fabulous car.
I don't even drive my 2018 STI anymore. Ultimately I'm going to keep my 2018 STI final edition.
In France, if the price will be around € 40K the 2024 ecological penalty will be around € 40K.
The new GR V2 will cost around € 80K.... so crazy!!!!!
@@stefankiney1625 yep. The world has gone mad.
Yep, we all need one😂
Agreed. 😂🤣
Will you be swapping phil ?
Not swapping. Adding. 😂🤣🙈
Cela serait possible en francais merci
First gen gr yaris have double wishbone rear suspension, so its the same
Yeah. Unfortunately you‘re right. 😅
Up the boost is just like adding hks power editor then ? Don't buy new car just add box
Quatsch, es geht beim Facelift um die ganzen Optimierungen. Die 280PS sind nur ein Bruchteil der Änderungen.
hoping i could swap the new seats into the older gr yaris
I‘m quite sure the seats are the same and it‘s these huge towers under the seats which are lower…
@@RotheliRacing Correct that was stated in another review...
Oh no, now i need to sell my MK1
Thats exactly how you know where the prices are gonna go in the coming months of the MK1. 😅
So which car is better, the manual or the automatic? Thank you... oh, and yes, you do need one. Just do it!
If you‘re driving it on the road and want to have a fun weekend car:
Manual
If you want to be the fastest on the racetrack and don‘t have the chance to moneyshift:
Automatic
If you‘ll „daily“ it (like i will) and occasionally take it to the track and you‘re old and don‘t want to hassle with shifting and already have access to a manual fun car:
Automatic
@@RotheliRacing Thank you for your considered reply. I've got to look up what "moneyshift" means.
@@davidhunternyc1 when you‘re in 4th and want to go into 5th but accidently shift into 3rd which will kill the engine nearly instantly via Overrev.
@@RotheliRacing I get it now, and it's called the moneyshift because it's going to cost you a lot of money to fix the transmission... I mean, not as much as the battery in a Ionic 5.
Es wird sich dann noch rausstellen, wieviele Nm das Automatikgetriebe maximal aushält.
Just a comment on the new interior . That dash looks shit . Digital is all good but the looks with large round air vent and squared of dash 🤮 . I not saying my 2022 is perfect but still 🤮
