I remember an interview he did. All he wanted to do was one song. He wanted just enough to earn royalties for his lifetime. That's all he wanted to do. Teaching was/is his love.
I am not sure if that is falsetto or he just has unbelievable range in his voice. He has so much control that it’s hard to tell. Either way, it’s smooth like butter.
Jeffrey Osborne originally with the R&B group LTD (Back In Love Again) then solo...You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song), On The Wings Of Love. He has an amazing voice.
Jay, If you want grit and rasp your man is Terence Trent D'Arby (aka Sananda Maitreya). His range is amazing from the deeper rasp, a falsetto and that mid range of such a sweet tone. He can and has sung everything from Sam Cooke to Wilson Pickett to James Brown and the Rolling Stones. Even though he has a very soulful voice he did not want to be categorized. He was a great songwriter often blending genres. You need to react to his live 1995 London version of "Holding Onto You." It's a mind blowing vocal tour de force. Check it out!
As a metal head with pop tendencies, I can say, without a doubt, that this song is simply AMAZING!! This is a deserted island song for me. There’s absolutely no denying the greatness of this song.
One of my all time FAVORITES, even have this on vinyl! Some Must Hears are Anita Baker song SWEET LOVE, Jermaine Stewart song WE DON'T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF and slightly more serious The Commodores song THE NIGHT SHIFT!!!
I saw the name and thought "The governor of Texas is a recording artist?" Well, turns out no, just the same name. This one is new to me. Very smooth. Beautiful.
If you liked Gregory Abbott, you should check out Jon Secada. Angel shows off his vocals, but he had a bunch of hits. He got his break as a back up singer for Gloria Estefan...who if you have not done a reaction on, you should for female Friday. Great stuff!
I miss the R&B from the 80s and 90s. I remember this man being really soothing. Thanks for the way back moment. Y’all need to check out Sade , songs like Smooth Operator, Sweetest Taboo, there are so many. She is fantastic!
Loved this song and he had an amazing voice, but I'd pump the braked on rivaling Luther... He continued to record after this, but never had another major hit. He went back to teaching at Berkley while recording and raising his son.
Absolute 80's classic. Still in a lot of my playlists and everyone that hears it loves it, including my son and his friends. It doesn't get much better than this 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love love love his voice!! Check out Jeffrey Osborne, he has a similar voice and soul... His song "On The Wings of Love" is so beautiful and powerful!! 🕊️💗
I was in 7th grade when this came out I had a huge crush on Gregory Abbott and I remember my sister teasing me because she had already gotten into alternative music.... but. I didn't care, I still remember jumping off the couch to dance every time this played on MTV!!! Abbott was smooth! You both would probably also like the song "Captain of her Heart" by Double. Done around same time period. Sadly, Abbot:s song career did not take off as it should have and I don't think you will be able to find many more songs by him of this caliber.
Oh yes! Love this song and for a fun fact his brother used to play on the show called Miami vice. His name was Philip Michael Thomas. I heard Gregory Abbott is a professor at a college now. He stopped singing.

Love this song by Gregory Abbott. Great voice and so easy on the eyes! But when are you guys going to discover TONY BENNETT? He is an iconic crooner and was Frank Sinatra's favorite singer. Y'all are missing out!

My mom, aunts, grandmother, and great-grandmother were buying all the CDs. 😄 My brother has hazel/green eyes, and is about Gregory's complexion and can sing a little, too. My wife and I had many a good time dancing to this fantastic ballad in the 80s. I am now looking forward to when Kenny Thomas is reacted to. His ballad "Tender Love" is superb. "Stay" is good too. etc etc.
Gregory Abbott was a math teacher. His class dared him to write and record this song for a bet. The class won the bet. His song not only got published, it became a hit.(Just a lil history behind the man). This was THE HIT. 😂❤❤❤
Sometimes it's not up to the talent. Especially with this type of pop music, if you don't have a major label to promote you and a songwriting team to help you craft a hit, just being a talented performer doesn't mean anything. Gregory did continue to make music on-and-off after this but mostly on smaller labels including his own.
@@frozenlake1215 Yeah, this was kind of the tail end of the Jeffrey Osborn, James Ingram, Atlantic Star (plus any duet featuring Peabo Bryson, of course) era of R&B, I think. Maybe he just hit late. It shifted more to the female artists at that point.

I don’t know how many years (decades) it’s been, but I just literally sang that song word for word to this video. That how big that song was back in the day.
Amber, you asked how you've missed so many great artists. I think it's because the radio stations don't play this kind of great music much anymore. They've forgotten about it. And the streaming services play what they think you want to hear based on what's popular and what you listen to. This stuff gets lost. I'll be honest, I forgot about this song and I loved it when it came out. Thank you and your fans for bringing great music back. Also, Terence Trent D'arby is another fantastic singer to check out!

I haven't heard this song in years. Thanks for reminding me how great it is. And Amber with the Michael Jordan tongue at the "Ini mini miny moe" was priceless. Keep up the good work, guys.
This was the era when I'd get home from a 12 hr day, let my cat in, go lie on my sunbed, and Luther or this guy and similar tracks would just ease out all the stresses of the day. They all sang just for me - MJ's PYT included. Still remember that as such a relaxing time due to the fabulous music. And breathe... (PS anyone still thinking sunbeds are a good thing, btw, please don't. They cause skin cancer - and aren't needed to appreciate the music!)
It's crazy that after this single Gregory Abbott wasn't a bigger success as a performer. Back in the 1970s he was married for a few years to singer Freda Payne. You should check out some of her hits too for Female Friday, like, "Band of Gold," "Bring the Boys Home," and "Deeper and Deeper."
Another wonderful R&B artist from the 80s is Terence Trent D'Arby, aka Sananda Maitreya. He has an amazing voice and overall sound.
You'll absolutely love him. J, I think "If You Let Me Stay" will be your groove and "Sign Your Name" will be Amber's jam! You won't be disappointed!
