There was a story going around when this song was released that a record producer was walking somewhere in New York and heard this guy singing in his apartment and was so enamoured that he tracked him down to record him. Amazing voice and amazing song, hard to believe this was his only hit.

I’m from Australia & New Zealand, where it was much more white assimilation and stuff with the 80’s which meant you’d get a lot of Australian rock music and all that, you’d get the generic pop music and stuff here and there, but us islanders are distinct and specific with what songs and genres we love - and I didn’t really hear this growing up around me with the media attention. Unless you were raised and around certain ethnic groups here who love and follow this genre of music and stuff. That’s why I was specific on the Polynesian community - because everyone here has their own tastes and stuff varying cultural background/nationality wise here. We are aware of the pop culture around us within the country we live in. And sure, we are aware of it and know it, but the songs were just not up to our taste - it all comes down to preference for certain communities. Plus songs and movies took so long to reach us here from the US as well back then. I think we were like almost a year behind or so with certain pop culture from the US. That’s why I said it the way I did with the comment 😎

I was born in 1970, so the decade of the 80’s cover every milestone of my early life. From prepubescent, adolescent, teenage, and finally early adulthood. This was my decade. I know the music from this time was mostly poppy, bubble gum, neon colors type music, but I will argue that the 80’s also had R&B that could rival Motown at it’s height. We still had Smokey Robinson, Chaka Kahn, and Tina Turner making hits and a new generation which included Keith Sweat, Mr Abbott, and of course, Whitney Houston. I’d like to suggest You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song) by Jeffrey Osborne.
I believe that Gregory Abbott was an original member of Sly and the Family Stone in the early 70s. He left the group when the drug usage got heavy, and decided on a solo career. This was his biggest hit as far as I know. So smooth yet enticing.
I remember those days, used to asst. manage a club here in San Francisco and I remember Sly coming in with his asst, called Buddha who would talk for him because he was so high on pcp and pot ( and God only knows),I remember asking Sly why he couldn't talk himself which didn't go over well, but hey.
I don' t think so I just did some reading on Him, no mention of that . he was just a teenager in the early 70's he never sang with sly

Yes, this was a big hit back back in the 80’s. I think it was in 1986, around the mid 80’s decade.
I was in my early 30's when this came out. I fell in love with Gregory! I bought the cassette AND the album (for the pictures mostly). I'm now 65 and he still makes this old motor purr!

3:07 how did he know when to hit pause? It was right before the small speech before the bridge.. synchronicity? Did his musical subconscious know that the music was about to suddenly change? After the speech is an element that leads up to the bridge and then redirects you back into the chorus. Literally making love to your brain. This whole song is brilliantly arranged. And so nostalgic.
