hii, I'm melon and I'm reacting to dragon ball z abridged for the first time. This is my DBZ abridged episode 42 reaction.
DBZ was my first anime and holds and special place in my heart:) I already really love this abridged series and am so excited to go on my DBZ abridged reaction journey.

Notice how Krillin describes traits of Eighteen he's attracted to, like hair, eyes and manerisms, while when he was with Maron everything was about her body.

He's still only attracted to her physically then. "Hair" and "eyes".
This and Frieza's ,"Oh ho, no. Don't mind me. By all means...Give me some ideas." Always brings a smile to my face. Such great intros before chaos ensued.
That wasn’t Freeza’s intro, but I get what you mean.

TFS always does a god job at both awesome lines for the villains and actually making them terrifying

Cell's intro never fails to give me the creeps, just so well done.
It is so well done! To me there are parts of the abridged series that they do better then the show.
I like the Kai version better.

And now Kami has fused with Piccolo. As with Nail, Team Four Star’s decision to keep Kami as a voice in Piccolo’s head is a stroke of genius. It’s really unfortunate how in the original manga and show that Kami’s fusion was treated as a mere power-up for Piccolo, one that very quickly became obsolete. Letting Piccolo communicate with Nail and Kami in his head is probably one of the best ideas that TFS ever came up with. I’ve heard that the writers of DBZ Super were influenced by the idea in some way (can’t confirm since I haven’t seen Super) - I hope that’s the case.
You're probably thinking of DBS episode... I believe it's 119? In that episode Piccolo and Gohan are fighting 2 Namekians from the 6th universe who happened to fuse with their entire race to get more powerful and basically carry out the hopes of their race. And at some point Piccolo gets overwhelmed by the feeling of all these Namekians sharing their power against him, only for Kami and Nail to appear before him and point out that he isn't alone either, in a situation reversal from early DBZ, Gohan is now protecting him while he gets back up on his feet. It's honestly a really good moment in what is... Let's be generous and call DBS a less than stellar series...
Yeah Piccolo claimed the Tactic of letting Cell catch him to get infos out was Kamis Idea, but it was never clear in what sense he remained in Piccolo.
And Piccolo himselfe never changed much, some People say him caring about the Lookout was part of Kami, but I dont know. Its not like he wanted to meet other Namekian after he fused whit Neel.
Its definitly more respektfull for Kami who was a cool Guy in Classic DB, and Neel for what matter who spendet most of this Time guarding a Guy who cant be murdered anyway, and then lost, and got gused away after his Powerlevel got obsolete.
Yeah Nail and Kami had brief cameos (Kami-os??) In Super, no real lines but they pull Piccolo out if a losing situation by just being there basically, it's a nice moment and good to see them acknowledge not just Kami but Nail as well

Freeza was the introduction of a villain. Cell was the introduction of a monster.
And both introductions were phenomenal.

Personally I think they are both the presentation of a monster. Freeza, because his introduction resembles the introduction of that N...zi main villain from Inglourious Basterds, while Cell is an extermination machine in the same way. Both evil, both monsters, that's why I really like their characters

Honestly, I can relate to your brother. A much younger me got his first issue of the dragonball manga around 18-20 years ago - and that was Volume 30. It starts with Doctor Gero being killed by 17, and ends with Cell drinking the reporter.
The way, that Toryiama drew the melting face of that poor dude fucked me up really good for years lol.
Dude the set up for Cell was sooo good. Invader from the future. Took Trunks' time machine, ppl gone, nothing but clothes left. Then the reveal is like WTF is that, AAAHH!

Taka is such a good voice actor. His Cell voices are top tier. He's also All Might in My Hero Academia Abridged (Something Witty Entertainment), if you ever plan on going through that, too.
Yeah, Cell drinking people (and watching them melt) is totally nightmare fuel.
Saw it as a grown man, and it STILL gave me the shivers.
Episode 43 begins with, in my opinion, the single best one-liner in the entire Abridged series!
I started to checkk to see what it was but didn't make it because I started laughing remembering what it is

Cell's intro gives me goosebumps, no matter how many times I see it. And just to be clear: Cell is HILARIOUS, and the comment section will quote everything he says. And it only gets better from here.

I loved cell for how sinister and creepy he was. The only dbz villain that had ever unnerved me was Majin Buu

Also Cell's first moment..and his voice, this creepy singing. WOW. Just WOW. Better than the original in my eyes. Hands down.
If i recall correctly, Kami's whole thing about not wanting to be a part of Piccolo again because it would be another prison is a TFS exclusive. They did an amazing job with that scene
You recall semi-incorrectly. Kami and Piccolo would technically be dead after fusing creating the being they were when they first came to earth, the son of Katas. A being who’s name was lost to time and who’s identity is neither Kami nor Piccolo. It’s like the ideal of if Vegetto never defused. He gave up who he was killing them to become someone new.

What I love is the contrast between how Krillin talks about 18 compared to Maron.
Honestly 18 is a great example of a strong woman character that a lot of writers could learn from. Badass and doesn’t take any BS from anyone!
Cell's intro was super creepy, completely sets the tone for his character and absolutely reminds me of this old Machinma called DC Chronicles. An old Fallout 3 Machinma where the protagonist is making his way through the metro system and there is an unseen danger stalking him, singing the exact same song but in a far more raspy tone.
And THIS is where DBZA starts flexing TFS' creepy-making skills.
I enjoyed your silent reaction to cells appearing. Seemed fitting. I do like how they made him creepier in that from.
The guys at Team Four Star have talked about they regretted not doing more with Gohan prior to this arc because of his role in the final episodes of DBZA feels more shoehorned in than in it was in the actual series

Since you loved cell’s intro you’re gonna absolutely love his outro, it’s somehow better in every way
The start of Cell introduction was the creepiest part in DBZ. Mystery of 2nd Time Machine, the egg, disappearing people with Piccolo and Kami helplessly watching how city gets lifeless in matter of minutes, the monster itself appearing, and then it talks...
Then Piccolo beats his ass and it becomes the usual DBZ.

They made that Cell entrance more creepy than the original, which is impressive since usually silence is creepier. Takahata's voicing is so good here.
Every once in a while, TFS ends their episodes in a serious way instead of being comedic. Most specifically, key moments in the saga.
I always loved how Gohan was the first Z fighter to ever see Cell. And the last thing Cell ever saw was Gohan.👀

This is probably my favorite episode in DBZA. I love that interaction between Piccolo and Kame.

1:33 It took a few watches before I caught the best part of this scene: 17 is the one driving, which means he was either pissed enough about someone insulting his sister to want to go back and do something about it, or he just really wanted to see what 18 would do to the guy 🤣

You should re-watch future episodes where Kami and Nail are featured with headphones. You'll notice a neat editing trick that KaiserNeko (The editor supreme) came up with where Nail's audio comes out one side, Kami comes out the other, and Piccolo can be heard in both.
Now that Piccolo and Kami are one again, it's time for The Return of Cooler!
I love Cell as a villain in Abridged, I can almost do the his three distinct voices... almost. Love quoting DBZA on the daily

So when Piccolo says "shit or get in my body" that's a play on the phrase "shit or get off the pot"
Cell singing Mr Sandman genuinely gave me nightmares

I have seen the entirety of DBZA at least 20 times. I rewatch it every few months, it's a problem. But only now watching this reaction did I realize that Bulma has her contact set to Kame (House) as ro differentiate it from Kame (God)

I haven't been able to find a clear copy of it but back in the day on UK TV Cartoon Network did sets of promos for the upcoming seasons of DBZ and by far the best and most ominous is the Cell Saga, there's a camera recorded version on youtube that gets it but just imagine the build up this had when you check that video out.

I just stumbled across your reaction videos and I have gotta agree with you. Every year I'll come back and watch the whole series! Its so good that if you showed it to someone who knew nothing about DBZ at all they'd think this was the real thing! LOL
I never noticed the horror aspect of Cell until I was an adult. Like I always watched the show in a headspace of campy shonen action. But if you really think about what Cell is actually doing, it's viscerally disgusting and horrific.

I so relate to your brother the first time i saw cell and this scene was when i was like 5 and boy did it haunt me i knew he was not real but i always imagined he was outside the window at night he scared the hell out of me for a good chunk of my childhood.
Celloween happens in the middle of episode 45. So you can watch it before or after episode 45 although it was released before that episode.
