Hundreds of years ago, during a great catastrophe that happened on Namek, a Namekian sent his son off to a distant world in hopes his people could survive should they fail to stop it.
The child arrived on Earth, with only fading memories of his home planet to keep him company. For years, he waited, hoping someone would come for him and take him back home, but no one came.
He decided to explore the world, witnessing humanity as they lived, the good and the bad. The Namekian came across the lookout, where the previous guardian resided.
The guardian was prepared to make the Namekian his successor, but the Namekian must first purge himself of the evil that tainted his soul.
This created two beings, one named himself Kami, and the other, the Demon KingPiccolo. After a hard-fought battle and help from a human named Mutaito, Piccolo was sealed away in hopes he'd never return.
A few hundred years later, King Piccolo was freed from his prison and once again started his reign of terror. This time, he was defeated and killed by a young boy named Goku. Not one to accept defeated like this, with his dying breath King Piccolo spit up an egg that held his son/reincarnation.
Piccolo Jr. would grow to full size in just 3 years and battled Goku in hopes of getting revenge, but he was defeated.
Piccolo Jr. was spared the fate of his father, as Goku saw this Piccolo had a chance to change and be good instead of evil.
And that's pretty much the last we see of Piccolo until DBZ starts.
Fwiw I think goku spared Piccolo Jr because he wanted to fight again someday and because killing him means coffee. Same with him having Krillin spare Vegeta. Not so much about moral fiber
That and killing him would result in no Dragon Balls
@@brolytriplethreat THIS. Goku spared him because he wanted to fight him again. Akira Toriyama was kind of blasted by letters from fans asking why Goku could be so stupid as to let an evil being live since he hadn't done that before (Goku often killed Bad guys or maimed them permanently). So when Toriyama created DBZ he basically retconned that it was Goku's Saiya-jin blood that makes him want to fight over and over. Essentially explaining that, as Goku got older his Saiya-jin blood lust lessened and changed to the thrill of fighting (because of the hit on the head as a child). American dubs are the ones who changed it to him sparing him out of the goodness he saw in him. Goku is basically Superman that likes to fight so dubs gave him that moral compass.
Piccolo becomes a better being when he is exposed to Goku and Gohan, slowly seeing that anger doesn't necessarily mean strength and that caring for others can have its benefits. He thinks of Gohan as his son after training him for a year, even if they aren't related by blood. Although he is King Piccolo's offspring he has a bit of Kami's moral fiber somewhere deep within. Eventually when Kami and Piccolo fuse they become what Kami once was and Piccolo becomes fully good at that point.
Kami has left the lookout before in Dragon Ball when Piccolo Jr first arrived, but he was disguised as a human named Hero. Im not positive but i think he is only allowed to leave the lookout under specific circumstances.

Kami is MAGICALLY powerful. He created Earth's Dragon Balls. But Piccolo is physically powerful. Kami brain, Piccolo brawn. Piccolo even says to Goku, "I'm part of Namek's Warrior Clan. If you want Dragon Balls, you need someone from the Dragon Clan. One punches people, the other makes Dragon Balls." And yes, Kami has left the Lookout, but that was in the original Dragonball, not in Z.
Kami was also really strong (at earth scale) before the beginning of Z. Only Piccolo Jr and Goku were superior.
The last time we saw Kami leave the Lookout was in The Dead Zone (and when Mr. Popo kicked him off for a "booty call").
Kami is still powerful tho. In DB anyway. Before the last World Martial Arts Tournament in DB, Kami was the strongest being on Earth.
Him cracking up like that is completely justified since Gohan literally becomes batman in the buu saga 😂

Kami was literally on earth during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, this is why people should actually read or at least watch Dragonball before they jump into Z.
Also Kami is physically powerful however as he is only half a person having been split from Piccolo his power is greatly reduced and was roughly a little lower than Piccolo’s from the start of the series. It’s confirmed that had Kami and Piccolo never split the original being would’ve been strong enough to defeat Frieza, so as strong or stronger than a Super Saiyan
All of Piccolo's backstory would have been explained before and during the Namek Saga, so anything to it isn't a spoiler.
Guru in the original tells the main cast about a Namekian named Katas that was the father of the "Nameless Namekian"(he who was Kami and Piccolo before splitting). This is why is DBZA if you go back, Guru says "so the son of Katas has passed". Katas sent his son to Earth, where he lived basically alone before stumbling into human society. And at some point he began to grow evil inside him due to living around humans, and when the Nameless Namekian sought to become the Guardian he had to remove that evil. This is what led him to split into Kami(good) and Piccolo(evil). Kami then stayed as Guardian on the Lookout, and Piccolo went rampant through the human world. On his conquest of evil, he was eventually stopped by Master Roshi and another Master(I believe the Crane School? He was the teacher of Tenshinhan and Chaitzou). They used the Mafuba technique to seal Piccolo into a rice cooker. Some odd years later, he was accidentally resurrected and then got stopped by Goku after causing havoc. But before dying, vomited out an egg. And this egg hatched and became Piccolo Jr. The Piccolo you know from DBZ.
It was the man who taught both the Roshi and Crane that used the Mafuba, along with Roshi (who learned the technique then). Shortly after that, the Turtle and Crane schools split.
It was Mutaito (the master of Roshi and the crane master) that used the Mafuba to seal Piccolo. But he died shortly after because the technique was too much for him to use.
Every time I see an episode from the Cell Saga, I say to myself, "This is genuinely one of the best episodes in the series." It's a testament to how well-made the show was in its final third, or even final half.
The previous arcs have been amazing but this one is gonna be Perfect!!!

Outside of filler, Kami only left the lookout during the 23rd World Tournament arc at the end of OG Dragon Ball.

I get it that Ruff doesn’t want to watch the anime of OG Dragon Ball (lots of episodes and Toei pacing) but I hope he could at least read the manga it’s super fun
If you're a fan of the show I would think you'd enjoy or at least be curious to see the content and background which makes up all the buildup to Z, and it's a damn good anime. To me, I don't understand enjoying a series but then not wanting to watch the series. I get the time commitment but if you know you're going to enjoy it, it doesn't sound like wasted time.

Akira Torieama's favourite character is Piccolo. Plus, was the "Vegeta"/Rival Character before Vegeta. So it makes sense for him to go from a Villain to Anti-Hero to full on hero at this point of the story.
Original Dragon Ball was the best part of the entire manga, it's a shame you guys abandoned the idea.

Cell has finally appeared! The next couple episodes are going to be really good! Especially the build up to his perfect form.
A lotta people have pointed it out, but give some more actual details: Yes, God (Kami) can and has left the lookout, but from what we understand, the time he can spend on Earth is probably strictly limited by his duties.
In addition to that, Kami himself just kinda seems to struggle with like something along the lines of depression ever since he split from Piccolo, so that prolly doesn't help (maybe Piccolo got all the confidence in the split 🤔)
Which duties though. Far as we know, he is doing basically nothing besides watching humanity and getting depressed over it

(Dragon Ball spoilers ahead, if that's at all a concern, which it doesn't seem like given the conversation at the end)
The basic timeline of events was that in order for (the Namekian who would be called) Kami to become Guardian of Earth, he had to remove all of the evil from himself, which he did by _literally_ splitting into two people, one who was pure Good and one who was pure Evil. The good one became Kami, the Guardian of Earth and creator of the Dragon Balls, and the evil one became Demon King Piccolo. King Piccolo would end up sealed away for a couple hundred years before being released again (dammit Pilaf, _every time)_ and Goku would eventually kill him. When he died, he spit out an egg that would hatch into the current Piccolo, who _actually_ went by "Junior" for a while.
If I recall correctly the original show stated that at the time they fused together to fight the Androids, Kami was a fair bit stronger than Piccolo, but he wasn't specced for combat and instead had weird Earth Guardian powers like creating the Dragon Balls, traveling to the Afterlife, and at one point had literally possessed a person so he could participate in the World Martial Arts Tournament. I don't remember if they mentioned it in Abridged yet, but Namekians are split into the Dragon Clan (healers and mystics like Dende, Mushi, Guru, Kami, and King Piccolo) and Warrior Clan (fighters like Nail, Piccolo, and those poor chumps that tried to monologue at Freiza). Even as a Dragon Clan Namekian, King Piccolo was still strong enough to nearly defeat Goku in physical combat, and was confident that making his descendant Warrior Clan would be a strong enough fighter to finish the job.

Another thing too, but Piccolo did the "split into two" thing at least once. I forget the exact point in the series, but he was training in a forest at one point and split into two Piccoli to fight himself.
Also, the movies aren't canon, but the Lord Slug movie introduced a third Namekian clan, the Demon Clan, which was comprised of Namekians who were consumed by evil, like Lord Slug. In which case, if the movies were canon, King Piccolo and his minions would have been Demon Clan by default, and young Piccolo Jr. would have been up until he started turning to the good guys after the Raditz Saga. While King Piccolo was literally pure capital-E Evil, the way Piccolo Jr. was born meant he wasn't a mere clone of King Piccolo but an entirely new person, and thus had the capacity for both good and evil.
Reading original DragonBall is much quicker to get through. I definitely recommend it.

People not remembering or watched og Dragon ball moment.
I just love this detail they added here. Where the original had Kami focused on his role as guardian, they added a sense of unease with fusing with Piccolo. This makes him more realistic. Imo.

Kami canonly left the lookout in Dragon Ball when he took over a human body to enter the World Tournament and battle Piccolo Jr (the Piccolo we see in Z.) Piccolo Jr is the offspring of King Piccolo, the evil half Kami expelled from himself in order to become guardian of Earth. Thus Kami's reluctance to merge with Piccolo Jr, as it means he'll be merging with the son of King Piccolo.
Kami also non-canonly leaves the lookout in the Garlic Jr movie to go battle Garlic Jr.
So while he mostly stays on the lookout, yes there are in fact times we've seen Kami leave the lookout.
Don't worry too much about the Buu Saga, guys. TFS just released the "Buu Bits".

The original Dragonball is amazing and unlike many DBZ fights, it actually has some good martial arts choreography. Also, it's the same story. No idea why people outside of Europe or Japan apparently never got to see it.
The story is better written, too. I mean, I like DBZ more too bc bigger explosions be fun and whatnot but still, it's a classic for a reason.

12:55 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. Final Arc of Pre-Z Dragon Ball.
The piccolo lore:
At some point in time, a nameless Namekian infant was sent to Earth to escape the devastating planetary drought that was killing the Namekian race. This nameless Namekian grew up to be a warrior and was trained by the previous God/Guardian of Earth, known as The Nameless. This Nameless Namekian was poised to become the new Guardian but, before assuming the role, chose to expel all the evil from within him. This act effectively divided his power and abilities in two. Kami is what remained of the original, and his evil essence assumed the name and form of Piccolo Daimao (also known as Demon King Piccolo). These two entities engaged in a fierce battle, and Kami managed to temporarily seal away King Piccolo.
Later, a martial arts master named Master Mutaito, who also trained Master Roshi, managed to imprison Piccolo Daimao using the Mafuba (Evil Containment Wave) technique, sealing him inside a rice cooker for several centuries. At the cost of his own life. All of this happened before Dragon Ball proper and is told as a backstory (The Namek part only came in DBZ as a retcon) In the Dragon Ball series, Piccolo Daimao eventually breaks free and starts creating an army of mutated Namekian offspring, which were mistakenly categorized as demons, as neither King Piccolo nor Kami fully remembered their true Namekian origins. This period resulted in the deaths of several characters, including Master Roshi (due to trying to used the Mafuba multiple times) and Killin (by one of Piccolo Daimao's minions).
Goku later confronts King Piccolo but initially loses. King Piccolo wishes for his youth to be restored using the Dragon Balls, prompting Goku to train with Korin the cat and ultimately defeat him using the Dragon Fist attack. Before his death, King Piccolo transfers his essence and memories into an egg, spitting it across the horizon. This egg is perfect genetic clone of himself, with all his programmed abilities and memories at the genetic level. He then dies within seconds. King Piccolo's soul is reincarnated into this egg, giving birth to Piccolo Jr. This is why Kami didn't die when King Piccolo died- Piccolo jr. Is literally Piccolo Daimao jumping into an unborn clone body/his son. Hence the many jokes where Piccolo sometimes refers to Piccolo Daimao in the third person (as his father) or first person (because they are the same soul).
Initially, Piccolo Jr. retained much of his father's evil nature, with a strong focus on seeking revenge against Goku. Dragon Ball concludes with a final showdown between Goku and Piccolo Jr. at the World Martial Arts Tournament. Piccolo Jr. exhibits various powers and abilities during this fight, some of which are rarely seen in Dragon Ball Z.
Regarding why the reincarnated Demon King Piccolo became a better person, despite retaining all his memories and personality, there are various theories, but no definitive explanation is given in the series. Some fans speculate that remnants of his evil were left in his original body. Ultimately, Piccolo and Kami's fusion can be seen as the restoration of the original Nameless Namekian, with some influence from Nail, though Piccolo and Kami chose to retain the name Piccolo for simplicity, even though they had the combined memories and personality of both. This is seen in the DB Manga, and multiple English dubs and subs of DBZ/DB Kai.
If kami dies, the dragonballs cease to exist. Hence him staying on the lookout most of the time.
Who remembers shen? When kami was inside some randos body and fighting in the tournament? Yeah thats where he was out of the lookout for those who remember.
Kami left the Lookout during the tournament between Teen Goku and Junior (Piccolo) near the end of Dragonball prior to DBZ.
Kami is God. And yes THAT God. The one we supposedly pray too. The Dragonballs were just a bonus
Kame fought in the 23rd TB. He beat Yamcha and lost to Piccolo after getting his Mafuba reversed. He’s left the lookout.
Classic dragon ball is fantastic. And it is such a massive chunk of the story to dragon ball over all.

The awkward feelings between Bulma and Trunks has nothing to do with the fact that she is talking to the adult version of the baby she just had. It's that she was trying to get into his pants when she first met him, not realizing that he was her son from the future.
Kami leaves. It's just that he's the kind of god who keeps hands off unless the entire population is at stake, but these days threats of that kind are beyond him, so staying behind where he can see everything and coordinate and maybe keep the dragon balls going by staying safe is a better use of his energy than getting directly involved. Couple that with his strong sense of responsibility to watch over things as much as possible and he feels like he can't leave more than he literally can't.

Kami/Piccolo backstory:
So, a long time ago an unnamed namekian traveled to earth, Kal El style to avoid his plane's life ending drought. This namekian grew up on earth, exposed to all the darkest parts of humanity. Due to this, he was like most humans, a morally gray person.
At some point in history, he was up for the position of Guardian of the Earth. The problem is, the guardian must be completely pure, and harbor no evil. So, that unnamed namekian purged the evil from himself, basically a reverse namekian fusion.
The result was two separate namekians, Kami and King Piccolo. Neither were the original namekian, but were essentially reborn as new entities, one pure good, one pure evil.
Time passes, King Piccolo gets sealed then released, faces off with Goku eventually. Goku kills King Piccolo, but in his dying moments, he spits out an egg that hatches to become Piccolo Jr.(the Piccolo we know and love). This Piccolo is evil, but as stated, has been diluted slightly.
Now, this unnamed namekian was a prodigy among his race, a "super namekian". So, when separated he had enough power for half to gain some of his battle prowess and still have enough power to spawn dragon clan powers(DragonBalls, healing, potential unlocks) in Kami.
Now, when they fuse back together, it's not that he gains Kami's battle power. It's 1. They basically absorb all the power that fuels the DragonBalls and converted it into battle power. And 2. The fact that he became whole again. He became the prodigy that he had originally been, a super namekian once again.

I was waiting for H-Man to get the "Trunks staring at arm" reference and was not disappointed 🤣 Definitely a standout episode, I love the pacing of the jokes in this episode mixed with Kami's deep introspection before fusing with Piccolo. And Taka killing his entrance as Cell here.
Also, since you're going into Buu with Kai later, if you want to check out a more truncated/filler-less cut of Dragon Ball, like a Kai take, I recommend checking out the Dragon Ball Recut fanedit by IAmTheMilkman! Shortens Dragon Ball from over 130-150 episodes I think to 82, making it much less of an investment than the original cut. (Though I'd suggest watching it subbed in Japanese since Milkman admits he prioritized the JP audio for it and the dub took a few liberties in some spots, but it's much better that way having just recently finished it myself.) He also finally released his Dragon Ball Kai Recut for the Buu arc, which you could actually check out too. Give 'em a Google and take a look!

Og dragon ball Kami was sent to namek tried to become the guardian of earth but had too much bad will inside of him and he split his good (Kami) and evil self (Piccolo), now this piccolo we refer to as demon king piccolo and he died in his fight with a kid goku but before dying spit out an egg which had all of his being inside of it without the memories and he grew up to be the piccolo we know and love
Kami used to be the strongest on earth until Piccolo senior rejuvenated himself, after that Kami trained Goku to be stronger than himself and after Goku beat both Piccolos senior and junior he tried to pawn off the job of guardian on Goku which makes sense the guardian is supposed to be the strongest on the planet, Goku obviously declined the offer but it didn't matter much because nothing that required a guardian happened in-between that and the start of DBZ at which point the position of guardian quickly went from "the strongest guy that defends earth" to just "the guy who makes dragon balls work" because of the extreme power creep, after that Kami and every other god like figure after him is rendered mostly useless; they just exist to give out exposition, training and power boosts but mostly just exposition.

Dragon Ball > DBZ
I can re-watch Dragon Ball but DBZ is waaaaay too long to go back through unless it's Kai. And Dragon Ball is so much more funny & the fights are more technique based than transformations & power-level based. They make WAY more out of the world tournament which is actually where a lot of Goku's wealth comes from when he won. The rivalry with the Crane School, Demon King Piccolo Arc, the Red Ribbon Army Arc are all great. Almost all of Goku's friends from Krillin & Yamcha to Tien & Chiaotzu started as his rivals first in one way or another. You get to see Roshi fight in the tournament. I really couldn't recommend it more; there's a fight between Tien & Yamcha at one of the world tournaments that was amazing.
