The whistling works because Namekians have extremely sensitive hearing. HFIL is actually canonical to the DBZ dub. They couldn’t call it Hell so they named it the Home For Infinite Losers.
And they called it that because they had to visually edit the shirts on the 2 demons that said HELL so they changed it to HFIL because then all they had to do was hide the bottom line in the two letters in the middle.
This comes from a time when anime censorship in America was much stricter than it is now. It has nothing to do with Teamfourstar's editing or choices in the matter. In the original DBZ dub, the studio censored "Hell" and changed it to be "HFIL" so as not to upset parents and advertisers as it was airing on American TV. Now how familiar does THAT sound @RUclips? Ironic that now American TV is filled with trash reality shows and trans people twerking all over.
Love the fact that TFS decided on keeping one of the dubs censor as a running joke and ended up making a whole series on it. "Too bad it's a Saturday, otherwise those buildings would be full of people." - Vegeta, somehow knows what the day of Sabbath is.
The King Piccolo jokes are also made because Slug's motivations are exactly the same as King Piccolo: use the dragon balls to return to their prime. Both succeed, only to die shortly afterward courtesy of Goku going through their chest. And in the Abridged version, both are one half of another Namekian - Kami for Piccolo, Guru for Slug.
Yeah, like they said, none of the movies were ever really canonical until Battle of the Gods. So each movie was basically a rehash of current or previous storylines.
In an early English dub they couldn’t use the word hell so when Goku went to the afterlife they called hell hifl. And team four star just leaned into that
HFIL is what they called Hell in one of the dubs for censorship reasons. It stands for Home For Infinite Losers. Anyways, yes TFS is doing a series by that name.
The running gag with most the DBZA movies is that they tend to take place at Christmas. There are some exceptions, but the plot point gets put down pretty heavily that Goku loves him some Christmas. Also, in the original movie it is discovered that namekians have suuuuuuper exceptional hearing. Like, ridiculous. Gohan's whistling nearly drives Piccolo mad but it winds up being Slug's weakness to, so realizing this, Piccolo, rips his god damn ears off in order to not be affected as he tells Gohan to whistle so he can reach Goku to give him energy... Hence why in this version he perpetually screams "What?!" The plot of the film is also suspiciously close to the King Piccolo Saga of the original Dragon Ball, hence Slug getting angry whenever someone calls him King Piccolo. A tongue-in-cheek joke akin to "Simpson's did it." Lastly, HFIL has a bit of a story to it. In the original manga and anime, it's just Hell. The demons Goku meets on his way to King Kai's planet both sport shirts that explicitly said HELL on them even in the Japanese original. When it was Westernized the term "Hell" was deemed inappropriate and thus needed to be changed. Easy enough when doing a dub, but the visual representation of the word also had to be altered in the animation. Rather than just blanking the demon's shirts they altered the lettering from "HELL" to "HFIL" and referred to it as the Home for Infinite Losers. TFS has always played on gags making fun of the editing and localization changes for the sake of a laugh to people who know a bit more about the show and its history. Like Master Roshi commenting on how he was drinking Orange juice, which suddenly became apple juice, and then became beer. It was always beer, but again, to make it more suitable for kids, ya know.
@@stardmg My favorites were always Cooler's Revenge, and World's Strongest. I thought that World's Strongest had a fun and interesting story and setting, and it's more about the journey to the end than it is about confronting a super strong, major villain. So I watched through TFS’s creator commentary on their whole series, KaiserNeko who is one of the creators that edits the videos and voices characters like Trunks and King Kai explains that he mainly does the edits. He learned along the way and even said that he wishes he could go back and fix/create some scenes or episodes. He mentioned that he sometimes will get someone to help with a scene but he mainly does the edits. In their abridged Kai 3 part 2, they did have someone who was an animator to help them out with a scene or two. But mainly it’s just KaiserNeko making the edits and going through all the DBZ episodes to find the shots he needs.
They call him Lord Piccolo because Evil King Piccolo did the exact same thing where he wished himself to be young again and then destroyed the dragonballs so they couldn’t be used against him which is why the dragon says this seems familiar. Also when Kami was younger he split his soul/body in half with his good half being Kami and his evil half turning into Evil King Piccolo. Then right before kid Goku killed King Piccolo, he spit out an egg that grew up into the Piccolo we all know. So Piccolo is essentially the “son” of Kami’s evil half
Yeah the HFIL was basically because they couldn't use the H word in the first dub of DBZ back in the 90's. Gaz and Mez shirts were even changed to have HFIL
Everyone else has already covered the DBZ stuff, but here's a fun fact about the Andy Griffith Show theme song: did you know it has lyrics? The version used on the show is just whistling, but there was also a vocal version written, later performed by Griffith for one of his albums. The actual title of the song is The Fishin' Hole. Tien is mostly human, but according to supplementary material he has distant alien ancestry- Also technically Chichi's dad has been referred to as a demon, but that may just be a title
Teamfourstar did not invent "HFIL" HFIL is actually an old and hilarious western attempt to censor the word HELL in actual hell (the place) in the dbz dub HFIL is actually an acyrnym that spells out "Home For Infinite Losers" which is where all of the dead villains if Dragon ball would go, while in reality, in the original Japanese version, and later renditions of dragon ball z, kept it as "Hell". This was changed for similar reasons for Mr Satan being changed to "Hercule" HFIL is now a running gag in dbza when goku refers to hell in the dbz world. Now with a show of the same name thats about the dead villains in Hell.
All of the movies are non-canon, but the plausibility of each movie ranges from only one small detail preventing them from being possible to no fucking way could this fit in the timeline. The most plausible movie is Wrath of the Dragon. If it wasn't for the fact that Tapion gives Trunks the sword at the end, implying that it takes place during future Trunks's original timeline, it would be entirely possible. Bojack is also decently plausible if not for a few details.
Oh yeah, Goku doesn't actually become a farmer until way later! So rn Chichi actually demands p much nothing of Goku. They just live off of her dad's money.
23:40 It's from Dragonball. It's because Namekians have extremely good hearing, and a whistle is like a sonic attack to them. Think "Solar Flare" but for hearing.
history of trunks is cannon i think, cause its based on a gaiden toriyama wrote, also they joke about demon king piccolo cause this movie is just his arc in dragon ball, alot of the movies are just different arcs redone for movie format with a fresh coat of paint
It's honestly an interesting theory that Slug was the evil half of guru. I don't think that part was explained in the original movie. I know it's not canon but still really good to think about. I'm sure they'll end up making all the movie villains canon but time will tell
Namekians have incredible hearing, and human whistling is just high pitched enough that it causes them noticeable pain. And it's thanks to TFS and DBZA that I realized that most of the movies were arcs from Z or the OG Dragon Ball. Like Dead Zone is *basically* just the Raditz arc, and Lord Slug is pretty much just the King Piccolo arc without killing off Master Roshi, Krillin, and Chiaotzu. If you look closely enough, just about every movie is just a condensed arc, and im sort of sad it took me so long to realize that!
I know this is way late on this, but they make comments about Kami being the only namekian that needed to split to get rid of his evil. The Nameless Namekian (Kami/Piccolo's original form) was a good person. He divided himself because he wanted to become the Guardian of Earth (Kami). The previous guardian wouldn't let him take the title because he had selfish reasons for wanting the position, so he removed his evil half to allow his good half to become the Guardian of Earth. So no, he was still a good and peaceful person. He just wasn't absolutely pure hearted.
This movie has one of my absolute favourite lines in all of DBZA: “If you’re with the government or the church get the fuck off my property. Which considering I now own this planet, is effectively everything.” Also this one: “There’s a certain sport I excel at.” “What’s it called?” “Competitive bitch toss!” 2:46 I believe Bardock Father of Goku was canon until Dragon Ball Minus. HFIL was the censored name for Hell in one of the original dubs. It stands for Home For Infinite Losers. The reason Nappa sung Stupify is because the original song was in the Funimation dub of the actual movie.
Goku saying HFIL is not a reference to the show they hadn't made yet, it's a reference to DBZ. In the show when Goku died against Raditz he went to other world and went on snake way, then he fell because he's an idiot and ended up in Hell. Now because censorship, they weren't allowed to say Hell, and on top of that the ogres had Hell written on their shirts. So they changed it to HFIL, the Home For Infinite Losers. TFS then took that idea and actually made it a proper thing IN Hell to rehabilitate villains with high power levels, resulting in the series. And it is hilarious.
Hehehe, once again, just like how they made Shenron basically the True Antagonist of the Last Movie, they made Guru pretty much be True Antagonist of this one, due to pretty much the same reason.
I'm a bit late, but in the movie Lord Slug wasn't a split part from another Namekian in the original movie, he was a genetic mutant predisposed to being evil. Also HFIL isn't a reference to another show, the English dub called Hell the Home for Infinite Losers instead of calling it Hell.
HFIL is what Goku calls hell because he doesn’t curse. Their other series “HFIL” is a dbza spin off that takes place in the bad part of otherworld (Hell)
The bit at the beginning where the guy is killed because he calls him "King Piccolo" is because the whole plot is basically just a repeat of the King Piccolo arc...and Team 4Star is mocking that. The Dragon saying "this seems familiar" is another jab at it. BTW, there's a line where Freeza is talking to Guru and says "then I'll be back for you, slug," and Guru says "leave my brother out of it! "
There were only 3 things about the Bardock special that were actually canon: Bardock existed and looked like Goku, Frieza killed Bardock, the armour style Bardock wore. Everything else about the original special (including his personality, backstory, and the events leading up to his death) were non-canon. Besides, the Bardock and Trunks ones were "TV Specials", not proper movies like the rest.
You guys should watch the "Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!" movie, its only in japanese but, it came out in 2008. I think the interest in that movie sparked Toriyama to do battle of gods and the subsequent content
I think the only Z movie that came closest was the Wrath of the Dragon because it has a lot of post Buu elements Like Super Saiyan 3 Goku and kid Trunks with Goten
Piccolo explains the making of Dragon Balls to Goku later on. He says, "I'm from the warrior clan. If you want Dragon Balls, you need someone from the dragon clan. One makes Dragon Balls, the other punches people."
Don’t know if you guys have caught this, but Taka (the voice for Abridged Nappa) is also the voice for Slug, Guru, Porunga, Dende, and Guldo. In keeping with the theme, he also voices a certain other green character you haven’t reached yet
3:00 They're not fake, the 30 years of non canon movies were really Toriyama laying groundwork for alternate timelines that we would only finally explore in Super. Akira Toriyama is well known for remembering fine details and tying up every loose plothole or missing character. No wait... Sorry, I'm in the wrong Timeline.
They introduced HFIL in the Saiyan saga when Goku falls off Snaaaaake Waaaay. I forget if that's what they called it in the dub so to not say "Hell" on American TV for kids or if TFS dubbed it that for giggles but either way yeah they have a whole ass show about the villains in HFIL now.
Yeah, definitely a dub thing. Remember those two guys in Hell that had the word HELL written on their shirts? When they dubbed it they erased a couple of the lines so that it said HFIL, and then they made up the "Home For Infinite Losers" thing to keep it from being pure gibberish.
@@karelfinn2343 Okay yeah I thought that's what it was but it's been a min since I've watched actual DBZ. Whenever I wanna watch it I just watch DBZA so wasn't sure if they made it.
Just a note, they pronounce HFIL like that every time. HFIL (home for infinite losers) was originally the replacement term for hell in the dragonball universe and was renamed as such due to US censorship.
one of the few movies that had such a big error in therms of timeline xD nobody knew about a super sayian ....so they never went to namek yet..but yet nail is here ^^
HFIL is a censor for the word Hell in the DBZ Funimation Dub. Hell was written on the shirts of two demons in Hell, but because of the censorship, they changed it to HFIL.
18:24 we’ll it’s not Slug is just another evil Nemekian, it’s that his whole plan is King Piccolo’s. KP was an old man who used the Dragon Balls to return to the prime of his youth, and used that newfound power to conquer the world. That’s the biggest issue with a lot of the DBZ movie villains, they’re just “Cannon villain done worse.” Cooler is just Freeza. Slug is just King Piccolo. Jinemba is just Buu. The androids are just the androids.
This movies placement makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It would have to be after Goku lands on Namek and Piccolo is revived but before the final battle against frieza.
yeah, you can say this for literally every single dbz movie. see, they screwed themselves because of one single line. first episode of DBZ krillen states this is his first time meeting gohan, then raditz immediately comes, goku dies, then vegeta and nappa attack, everyone dies before goku gets back to earth, then they go to namek so it's impossible for krillen to know gohan on earth while yamcha, tien, chiaotzu, piccolo, and goku are alive, and before goku is a super saiyan and since both krillen and gohan are in every single dbz movie, that means that one line immediately makes every single movie prior to goku being a super saiyan automatically non Canon then you can find reasons for pretty much every movie to be non cannon after as well. for example, vegeta goes super saiyan in android 13, but no one knew he could do that before fighting android 19, and before he does that goku is out of commission until they go into the time chamber, meaning that movie cant happen unless vegeta can go super vegeta same goes with pretty much all of the movies where both goku and vegeta go super saiyan honestly
So Lord Slug's movie is kinda a rehash of the King Piccolo plot, including being killed by Goku going through his chest, as DBZA Kai said 'Nobody watched Dragon Ball'. Lord Slug in the actual movie is a separate entity but the abridged version made him the 'good half' to Super Kami Guru for the swerve, since King Piccolo was the evil half of the Nameless Namek who came to Earth, the good half being Kami. It was clever though that Gohan's whistling was his undoing, since Namekians have sensitive hearing due to their larger ears, and with Slug being giant it was even more sensitive. Canonically this was pre-Namek, but the abridged series doesn't really have a clear timeline because Nail is here but Goku hasn't gone Super Saiyan, instead having this 'False Super Saiyan' state. At the least Piccolo did indeed get a bigger role like the last movie said, fitted with Stone Cold Steve Austin music and just being overall a badass, plus the Christmas theme comes back for Goku and Icarus the non-Canon Dragon recurs in being Gohan's pet but also often killed off. Last I checked though Cooler isn't canon, like he doesn't show up in canon material (aside from GT, but it's GT) he's just very popular and designed by Toriyama HFIL is actually a censorship joke, see when Goku died and in filler fell off Snake Way he met the two Ogres (Goz and Mez) with 'HELL' on their shirts, who Goku outwitted and then returned to Snake Way with an energy boost to retcon any lost time, censors changed the word HELL to HFIL, which the abridged series used as Goku's substitute word for Hell, and then became the later post-Cell Saga Spinoff show
So no Goku only got the farming job in Super because Chi-Chi's dad the Ox King ran out of money. But then Hercule gave him a ton so he could go back to just training all the time.
The whistling works because Namekians have extremely sensitive hearing.
HFIL is actually canonical to the DBZ dub. They couldn’t call it Hell so they named it the Home For Infinite Losers.

The best part about it is that Slug is also evil, so really there was no good inside him whatsoever. Hahahaha
Amazing reaction video ❤
As for the whole whistling thing, it is like nails on a chalkboard to Namekians
Teamfourstar did not invent "HFIL"
HFIL is actually an old and hilarious western attempt to censor the word HELL in actual hell (the place) in the dbz dub HFIL is actually an acyrnym that spells out "Home For Infinite Losers" which is where all of the dead villains if Dragon ball would go, while in reality, in the original Japanese version, and later renditions of dragon ball z, kept it as "Hell". This was changed for similar reasons for Mr Satan being changed to "Hercule"
HFIL is now a running gag in dbza when goku refers to hell in the dbz world.
(At 17:00) this part I actually like, because they played my favorite song from Disturbed… "Stupify"
And this is also Goku's fake Super Saiyan form.
Oh yeah, Goku doesn't actually become a farmer until way later! So rn Chichi actually demands p much nothing of Goku. They just live off of her dad's money.
H.F.I.L is the dub dodging around certain concepts/swearing the meaning is Home For Infinite Losers as an alternative to hell.
Goku spends most of his time leaving, dead, or training. Usually more than one. Chi-Chi stopped looking for him after Dragon Ball.
23:40 It's from Dragonball. It's because Namekians have extremely good hearing, and a whistle is like a sonic attack to them. Think "Solar Flare" but for hearing.
They're also calling him King Piccolo because he did the exact same thing, wish himself young again to take over the planet.
history of trunks is cannon i think, cause its based on a gaiden toriyama wrote, also they joke about demon king piccolo cause this movie is just his arc in dragon ball, alot of the movies are just different arcs redone for movie format with a fresh coat of paint
yep.
lord slug is King piccolo
cooler is just frieza
android 13 is cell
fusion reborn is buu
you could argue tree of might is the saiyan saga
I forgot how much piccolo roasts the henchmen in this movie 😂
It's honestly an interesting theory that Slug was the evil half of guru. I don't think that part was explained in the original movie. I know it's not canon but still really good to think about. I'm sure they'll end up making all the movie villains canon but time will tell
Except in abridged it's revealed at the end that slug is the good half LOL
Good half*
So Goku could've just whistled in order to defeat King Piccolo and Piccolo.
I love when they stop to explain dbz lore and get it wrong 😂
Everytime tho, it’s annoying
This movie has one of my absolute favourite lines in all of DBZA: “If you’re with the government or the church get the fuck off my property. Which considering I now own this planet, is effectively everything.”
Also this one:
“There’s a certain sport I excel at.”
“What’s it called?”
“Competitive bitch toss!”
2:46 I believe Bardock Father of Goku was canon until Dragon Ball Minus.
HFIL was the censored name for Hell in one of the original dubs. It stands for Home For Infinite Losers. The reason Nappa sung Stupify is because the original song was in the Funimation dub of the actual movie.
The Bardock special wasn't canon, but Toriyama liked the designs enough to reference them in the manga.
FYI Nappa Singing Stupified was a reference to the Dub replacing the original background music with the song
Battle of Gods & Resurrection F are just DBS movies that sum up its respective saga for the story, though can be watched as their individual episodes
“I need you to do that thing that really annoys me!!! You mean talk?”😂😂😂 made my do a spit take.😂😂
Hehehe, once again, just like how they made Shenron basically the True Antagonist of the Last Movie, they made Guru pretty much be True Antagonist of this one, due to pretty much the same reason.
I'm a bit late, but in the movie Lord Slug wasn't a split part from another Namekian in the original movie, he was a genetic mutant predisposed to being evil.
Also HFIL isn't a reference to another show, the English dub called Hell the Home for Infinite Losers instead of calling it Hell.
super kami guru is actually the evil half, which makes so much sense
“HFIL” is the censored version of “Hell” from the 4Kids dub of DBZ.
It stands for “Home For Infinite Losers”
I like how they noticed lord slug is Napa aka both voiced by taka
Town is not human says bandana boy…yes he is.
Goddamn this dude refuses to not take Ls every episode. The Krillin of the group.
15:13 actually really really good editing considering that the vegeta scene is from a completely different movie
HFIL is what Goku calls hell because he doesn’t curse. Their other series “HFIL” is a dbza spin off that takes place in the bad part of otherworld (Hell)
Hell got censored to HFIL in the dub and DBZA makes a joke about it
The bit at the beginning where the guy is killed because he calls him "King Piccolo" is because the whole plot is basically just a repeat of the King Piccolo arc...and Team 4Star is mocking that.
The Dragon saying "this seems familiar" is another jab at it.
BTW, there's a line where Freeza is talking to Guru and says "then I'll be back for you, slug," and Guru says "leave my brother out of it! "
(At 2:28) that, and Bardock's and Trunks's backstories. Until they rebooted Broly… for the former.
HFIL is how funimation censored hell on the blue and red ogres shirts. Instead of hell it became Home For Infinite Losers aka HFIL
I love that the reason they included Stupify at the end was because in the original dub they added the song for no reason.
This movie could fit in a timeline where Goku killed Frieza with the spirit bomb. That would explain why he wasn't already a super saiyan.
You guys should watch the "Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!" movie, its only in japanese but, it came out in 2008. I think the interest in that movie sparked Toriyama to do battle of gods and the subsequent content
The brightest knife in the crayon box 😂😂😂
Toriyama didn't work on the anime, and especially not the Z movies.
17:00 fun fact, thats the super saiyan original desing
Let’s be honest…. Bulma is the leader.
18:15 also Lord Slug and King Piccolo's plan and motivation were the exact same, something Abridged Slug doesn't like hearing lol.
Slug/King Piccolo was voiced by the same guy as Nappa in DBZA. He also did Imperfect Cell
He voiced all forms of Cell
22:05 Dude the spirit bomb is use in almost every arc .
Yea, but it never works.
That's Professor Layton as Bubbles, btw.
one of the few movies that had such a big error in therms of timeline xD nobody knew about a super sayian ....so they never went to namek yet..but yet nail is here ^^
And even Battle of Gods is essentially not canon either, since the rewriting of those events for Super retcons the movie version.
HFIL is a censor for the word Hell in the DBZ Funimation Dub. Hell was written on the shirts of two demons in Hell, but because of the censorship, they changed it to HFIL.
Lord slug his voice by the same guy, who voices Napa in the abridge
HFIL is an acronym for Home For Infinite Losers. This is the censored name for Hell in DBZ
God love how they talk over the ENTIRE, FxxKING, VIDEO!!!
All the king Piccolo jokes are because in the original Dragonball, the evil Piccolo wishes for his youth back.
In the US they couldn’t say “Hell” so they changed it to HFIL which stands for Home For Infinite Losers.
HFIL was actually a thing in the American version of Dragonball Z, so it’s not something they thought up themselves
Love how at the end they not only establish that Slug is the other half of Guru, but that Slug is the "Good" half
10:40 and by farm once a year you mean Plow her fields right?
HFIL is what was used to censor the word Hell in the DBZ dubs.
"Debatably Chi Chi's the leader" I'd say Bulma
This movies placement makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
It would have to be after Goku lands on Namek and Piccolo is revived but before the final battle against frieza.
yeah, you can say this for literally every single dbz movie.
see, they screwed themselves because of one single line.
first episode of DBZ krillen states this is his first time meeting gohan, then raditz immediately comes, goku dies, then vegeta and nappa attack, everyone dies before goku gets back to earth, then they go to namek
so it's impossible for krillen to know gohan on earth while yamcha, tien, chiaotzu, piccolo, and goku are alive, and before goku is a super saiyan
and since both krillen and gohan are in every single dbz movie, that means that one line immediately makes every single movie prior to goku being a super saiyan automatically non Canon
then you can find reasons for pretty much every movie to be non cannon after as well.
for example, vegeta goes super saiyan in android 13, but no one knew he could do that before fighting android 19, and before he does that goku is out of commission until they go into the time chamber, meaning that movie cant happen unless vegeta can go super vegeta
same goes with pretty much all of the movies where both goku and vegeta go super saiyan honestly
Last I checked though Cooler isn't canon, like he doesn't show up in canon material (aside from GT, but it's GT) he's just very popular and designed by Toriyama
HFIL is actually a censorship joke, see when Goku died and in filler fell off Snake Way he met the two Ogres (Goz and Mez) with 'HELL' on their shirts, who Goku outwitted and then returned to Snake Way with an energy boost to retcon any lost time, censors changed the word HELL to HFIL, which the abridged series used as Goku's substitute word for Hell, and then became the later post-Cell Saga Spinoff show
The idea of gohan watching red dawn is hilarious 😂 😂 😂
Tien is a human/triclops hybrid…so he’s part alien like Gohan which makes Krillin the strongest human on the planet
1:57 that moment the review crew and world are introduced or reintroduced the birth of the
Pokémon Jynx as Popo’s wife meme
🤣😂
HFIL is from the shirts the demons wear in hell in DBZ
So no Goku only got the farming job in Super because Chi-Chi's dad the Ox King ran out of money.
But then Hercule gave him a ton so he could go back to just training all the time.
