I’m sorry bro I just can NOT agree to that. Like the Kai score had the best of everything for Z. I wish the Yamamoto score could’ve been used for the android saga
Feels a little unfair to compare. Funimation first started dubbing during the Freeza Saga, as Ocean did the Saiyan saga. Funimation went on later to redub the earlier episodes. It’s strange rewatching Z cause you can tell when the dub shift happened, Funimations first dub during the Freeza saga both feels they took some creative liberties for a more America audience and like they didn’t know what they’re doing quite yet. I have a Z box set and when I watch watch it the Funimation dub isn’t that bad on the earlier episodes, but when that shift to Funimations first dubbing mid Freeza arc the quality dramatically drops.
Great video. Honestly, I prefer Kai's iteration more so as I grew up with it, but I can see the merit and appreciation for Z and I respect where it shines. Seeing the comparisons for this arc, I'm pretty satisfied with what I heard for both sides.
I honestly prefer vegetas rage in (ironically) in the abridged version. The pure screaming of his anger and the fact he screamed for so long his screaming could be heard IN DIFFERENT TIMELINES. Also the fact that the face and the screaming fit perfectly with each other as the basis with his eye vains showing an all, even though its very unrealistic.
@awsomeboy360 I was being satire, I was just saying that the abridged vegeta scream just fits. Yeah, I know the "SCREAM SO LOUD IT CAN BE HEARD FROM DIFFERENT TIMELINE" thing is definitely a bit over exaggeration at best.
I love your pure honesty on both versions. Even though Z has worse overall voice acting, it does shine at times. Kai's line deliveries more often than not dwarf the original Z Dub, but not every time. I mostly seemed to agree with Kai being better, my score reaching 7 to Kai and 5 to Z. Great video, you earned a Subscriber! :D
@@Trilliman707 Oh definitely original Funimation Z dub is better. They may have been inexperienced VAs back then but they put effort and passion into their performances. Now it's clear that none of the original voice actors give a crap anymore and that's reflected in their bored and wooden performances, despite their experience. Not to mention Frieza and Gohan's voice actors were far FAR better in the original Funi Dub than what we got.
I’m ngl, I really wish you included Vegetas death scene. One of my favorite deaths and moments from the entire franchise, and I think Sabat is spectacular in both versions. Great video as always.
I actually like the z version. He sounds more "alien" and came off more scary because we were anticipating him. Those rebels that ran into him really hyped him up. It just felt like they were visiting this Alien planet
@@Beck-J-Hagg maybe to you. But it sounds like an alien creature. Plus this WAS the Frieza voice that made the character so iconic. I even prefer the ocean dub frieza
@@mania4270I mean you say that like the current voice for Frieza wouldn’t have been iconic. It’s only iconic because of nostalgia. I won’t say she wasn’t a good voice actress for Frieza but you can’t lie, some of those lines back then were corny and just out of place. “Pop goes the weasel” is not something that I would expect someone to say after blowing someone to smithereens but yeah.
@@AlmightyKing143 but that's not her performance, those are lines. And no lie, I hate Kai and the 04 dub. Krillin mentioning Humphrey Bogart in the garlic Jr saga was funny. Lol. But seriously I liked how her voice changed with each transformation. And again SHE SOUNDS ALIEN. also it's not nostalgia, I still watch DBZ from internet achive because I hate Kai and the current dubs on the Funimation app. So for me, this has remained frieza's voice. Also not to mention she voiced freiza in the games up until 2013. For me, I'm 31, so it's not nostalgia kid. I can clearly remember when they stopped using her voice because I was in college when Kai was airing. And I thought they were butchering it. It's ok if you like the new guy. I think he's ok, but it's obvious that it's very heavily inspired by the old school freiza voice. And I don't mind the corny lines because it fits DBZ. What I hate is how DBZ more or less doesn't have the early 2000s feel of rock anymore. But that's me, enjoy the new freiza, I'll continue to watch DBZ with the og frieza.
I grew up with both Kai on Nicktoons and the later the OG Funimation dub and I usually say that the best way to watch DBZ is by watching the Saiyan and Frieza sagas on Kai and then the Cell and Buu sagas on the OG as both have their moments in different sagas to get the best of both worlds
Didn’t realize dbz Kai had most of the lines I liked I guess I changed my mind about which I prefer, but I also really vary on music..so whoever has the Faulconer score matters to me
when frieza yells i hate you and as you put it, he throws a fit, that actually suits the character perfectly. He was given an empire from his father he has never been told no and nothing has ever been able to challenge him or what he wants. Throwing a fit when his plans are thwarted aligns with him as a character perfectly.
I started with Kai myself, and for the most part I do prefer it. But the original Z Funimation Buu saga is better imo. Cell saga I flip back and forth somewhat. Cool to see someone else's opinion on this too
Kai is still better in the Majin Buu Saga. But Z is much closer for Majin Buu Saga because of production increase as well as the actors were giving more time.
I feel like your editor takes the music into perspective with these scenes too much because the dub wasn't originally made for these tracks, it was made with Faulconer's music. Yes, i do know finding the original broadcast soundtrack is difficult, because versions of the dub that were sold on shelves used a different mixing of the Faulconer tracks compared to the original TV air, but i still need to point that out. Also i'd love one day for you guys to do the same but compare Z kai dub to the sub (because the Z and Z kai sub are essentially the same). In a lot of instances i love the dub but i think overall the sub wins even though both have phenomenal voice acting
You know, before watching this video even tho i liked kai more, the older fanboys had me thinking z was better cuz they were so nostalgic over it. But this video made me feel more comfortable for prefering kai. It really does enrich a lot of what the original dub put out.
I don’t know if anyone else remembers. And it probably is better to use this version. But the original Z dub was redone several times. Because Chris was 100% trying to do a Brian Drummond impression even all the way up to Majin Vegeta. I think the scenes being used or when they went back and re-dubbed some of them.
I grew up with Z never getting the chance to watch Z Kai because i couldn't find it anywhere but now that i am grown and own both both Z and Z Kai on Blueray I have to say that Z Kai in most ways it much better to me with line delivory, voice acting and just better overall auido and sounds in the background sicking out to me more. To me this point really shines in the Namek and Frieza Sagas. After watching Z Kai its hard for me to go back and watch Z for the Namek Saga I would only go back adn watch the fight with Frieza if i were to watch anything but Kai to me still is a better watch for me in that regard. So i have to say Z Kai is just better for me.
As someone who grew up with the actual original English Dub, Ocean dub, then Funimation, and then years later Kai, I much prefer Kai. Better voice acting and overall better voice actors in Kai
Just rewatched all of dragon ball z and super and I forgot there was kai close to the end of z but I honestly am glad I watched z I liked it a bit more
Idk if you realized this, but I can tell you used the Funimation redub done in like '05, where certain actors, mainly Sabat and Strait, re-recorded dialogue for future home and broadcast releases. Anytime you hear pre-Buu arc Sabat-voiced characters, or Sonny Strait's Krillin sounding more in line with their Kai and Super portrayals, it's the redub. In the original broadcast version, not only did they start off copying the Ocean actors, but their then-younger voices were naturally higher.
Yes!! Then as soon as the Frieza saga ends we go back to Sabat's original dub where Vegeta's voice is much higher and closer to Drummond's. I prefer his original dub over the redub for a lot of scenes.
@@happycompy I hated that in retrospect. Funnymation had advertised the Orange Bricks as "definitive" , "voice consistent", and promised do redub the ENTIRE series.. Only for me to waste around $270 for those bricks, buying into FUNNYmation's propaganda 😒
I think that the Faulconer Z is the better one, imho. It captures enough of Goku's dumb himbo character where he's just a strong warrior guy looking to fight people, but also adds depth to his character, and emphasizes that he IS a different Saiyan than Vegeta. Vegeta is just Goku but evil, strong guy wants to get stronger by fighting people...he has a goal in that he wants power and status, but you get what I'm saying. Goku loves Earth. He loves his family. He loves his friends. Goku saying to Frieza that he's a "light in the darkness" and all that is so fitting because he's evolved. He's grown. He's become something more. He wants to fight evil like Frieza because he knows that he must, because his friends, family, and home will be threatened...the fact that Frieza is one tough MF is also a bonus, but I feel that by Namek, Goku's character has seen enough, lived enough, experienced enough...to not just be "strong guy wanting to get stronger" anymore. It dumbs his character down so much, which I think the JP and Kai dubs just don't understand. Yes, I know, Toriama blah blah blah manga blah blah blah...but we are talking about the same dude that wanted to END the series after the Cell Saga and was forced to continue it against his will basically, and the dude who LITERALLY FORGOT SOME CHARACTERS existed like Launch lmfao. Forgive me for not being a "purist" if the author himself forgets and retcons shit on the regular. I think that this is okay. Goku IS a protector of the innocent, his FRIENDS and FAMILY and HOME (because you know, it's where he LIVES lol) not because he WANTS to but because he MUST and CONVENIENTLY it ALSO gives him strong dudes to fight, scratching that itch to get stronger and fight strong opponents. Goku is a RELUCTANT HERO. He's not a hero because he WISHES to be, it's because he MUST because there's no one else fitting for the job. Vegeta sure as shit won't do it, until after the Buu saga, and Gohan doesn't want to do it either. He wants to live a regular life. "Hero goku" is shunned by a lot in the community and think this is hammy and not like Goku but I think they are wrong. Goku has always loved his friends and family. Isn't that enough to motivate him to fight evil not because he wishes to, but because he must? Isn't that HEROIC?
I can see both for sure. I love the speech he gives frieza. I know dub went with a more heroic outlook for him and I feel like he can be both. Why not fight for his family friends and planet but also want to push himself as well as a fighter. I prefer faulconer personally as it is what I grew up watching. And yes toriyama forgets things but to be fair he goes with writing where he does things and is able to wrap them up later down the line. Sometimes well and sometimes not but it is very interesting that he goes about it that way and can more often then not do it well. At least imo. I’m going to watch kais blue rays for the first time this yea with a friend who hasn’t seen dragonball so I’m excited for that!
Yeah. Goku in the original Funi dub is quite a bit more heroic than the Japanese or Kai dubs. He sounds like someone who is actually worth rooting for, instead of this battle obsessed jackass he is in the other dubs, which is only taken to extremes in Super.
@@immortalfrieza I agree. I actually cant really stand Super Goku, because he seems like an exaggeration of what they interpreted from Toriyama, but Toriyama himself seems to forget when he actually did make Goku Heroic. Like when he tells Freeza he is there to avenge the Saiyans and Namekians he killed. Super Goku just has nothing to root for him on because he doesn't really stand for anything. He doesnt need to be Superman (ironically who isnt all that heroic these days) but Super Goku is just an annoying Luffy knock off now. Where he is really dub and doesnt really care about anything. Dub Goku was at least easy to root for him because we agreed with his side of the conflict. You wanted him to win because of what he was fighting for. There isnt really much of a reason to root for modern Goku. He's so flanderized in the other direction I just don't find him likable.
@@GeteMachine Hell, the original japanese version of Goku through Dragonball to Z was far more heroic and far less of an idiot than Super Goku is. Toriyama with Super took Goku's worst aspects and dialed them up to 11 while massively downplaying Goku's positive aspects.
I think we can all agree that Kai did wonders for the Sayain and Frieza saga. I have a few gripes about the android and buu saga. Mostly music choice but that was apparently because it was poorly cobbled together.
I like Kai a lot more, and this saga really shows how much better it is. Kai has improved acting, OST, dialogue, and just feels more epic. Lines like "He will bleed" really makes Goku sound angry.
You should do that for every cannon arc. And Dbz Kai destroys DBZ in EVERY ARC. YES, INCLUDING Majin Buu. WHile Dbz improves by then. Kai still beats it in dialogue and overall acting.
Personally prefer Z and Z's Frieza alot more than Kai. Its interesting you chose that Z clip of Vegeta rage with the dragon ball and not the ocean dub version (Brian Drummond) which was alot better than Kai
Although I got used to the Z dub during my childhood now I find the 'I am" speech biased and hilarious at the same time 😅. The Kai speech which is closer to the original is Dope
People who say z is better than kai are just a bunch of nostalgic americans who havent read the manga or seen the sub. I like watching the old dub from time to time for nostalgia, but objectively speaking its a pretty bad dub
@@Cutthroatrah lol, a lot of us grew up with the old dub and read the manga later, so nostalgia doesnt apply. The manga is the real DBZ and doesn't have dumbed down dialogue like the z dub. You all literally just argue that it's better cuz you grew up with it and the faulconer score, which is why you are blinded by nostalgia.
I also want to add that all the vegeta scenes in the DBZ version you have aren't from the original 1999 broadcast. They're from the redubbed orange season 3 releases from post-2003. So that's not the version people grew up with and first heard airing on TV. In the original broadcast, vegeta's modern voice actor Chris Sabat sounded goofy, and tries to do an impression of Bryan Drummond, who was the original English voice for Vegeta from the Ocean Dub group that FUNimation outsources to dub DBZ for them till the decided it'd be cheaper to have their own inhouse crew dub the show.
Kai absolutely clears over Z. Better visuals, dialogue and even music. People love the Faulconer score but personally I don't see what so special about and Kai's music, as generic as it sounds compared to Z, it still works to elevate the scene.
It wasn't really bias. Except I think the Ginyu bit was ridiculous. The song made me cringe and laugh out loud. I could easily pick Z's version over that.
@@calvincraig3224how is it biased if he’s providing valid reasoning as to why he likes Kai over Z at certain areas? He’s even complimenting the original dub for its efforts and labels Z the pioneer of the iconic SSJ scene (which Kai will never have the title of since it’s a redub)
With your constant references to the OST, did you use the Falconer score for these comparisons? Because watching the original Z Dub without the Falconer score is like eating an Oreo without filling.
@@Lyy0n it's obviously subjective and not saying you're wrong if you prefer Kai. But to me the music used in Dragon Ball from Kai onwards is, for the most part, overly kiddy.
@@link1565V2Kai’s score is way better imo. One of the best comparisons imo is piccolos death in the saiyan saga. In Z it’s super out of tone, but the Kai score makes the scene way more emotional.
Imo Sean improved as Goku in Kai compared to how he sounded in Z. In Z, you can really tell that this was one of his first roles as a VA (bro sounded like Frieza spilled his glass of milk). In Kai, he sounded really pissed off (especially in scenes such as when Goku almost broke Frieza’s hand or where Frieza mentions Krillin). Say what you want about Kai, but you can obviously tell how much the Funi cast have improved compared to Z.
Good take, however... the "OG" you should have did should have been the ones on toonami... i thi k it was ocean dub and transition to funimation. Brian did a wayyyy better job with vegetas rage vs Chris... sure the originals were a little corny however way more iconic than anything Kai could muster up. I guess it depend on which dragonball z you watched first. I really dislike Kai, personally.
Glad i grew up with both. I used to watch Z with my older cousins and uncle when i was a kid. Then kai kept those moments alive. Not even recognizing the dialogue switch at the time, made it seem better than we remembered.
The only point the old dub has for the "I Am" speech is that the video games starting with Budokai initially kept it...until they gradually started swapping it out for the original speech, as if in real time Funimation was learning what DB was actually about. Which makes the moment Sean actually says "I am the Super Saiyan, SON Goku" better. Tldr: they fucked that first attempt up so bad only to gradually realize their mistake and then fix it.
A lot of Kai's dialogue is actually decent, but the voice actors talking/yelling were just over the top, imo. Moments like, "Krillin can't be brought back with the dragonballs" were intense and desperate, but that and scenes like it sounded a bit whiny, at least compared to the original dub.
Vegeta's monologue in the original when he was dying was more emotional and crazy good. In Kai it was kind of dull. That alone made the original better.
For the most part, Kai just blew the old dub waaaay out of the water with the enhanced dialogue and BALLER voice acting, but at the same time, it’s hard to say as some scenes in Z just can’t be touched imho and then the same for Kai, the atmosphere and enhanced dialogue of the scene right after goku gives Freiza his energy, the shot of Freiza rotating around goku taunting him that he basically has no chance of getting off namek before it explodes, the determined look on his face throughout, the final side eyed look he gives Freiza before he begins to fly away, the physics of gokus hair in the scene, it’s just AMAZING and EPIC. As for Z, the final beam struggle between gohan and cell is just TOO powerful with all of the faulcouner tracks that play, from the bits of the super sayian theme played when gohan charges up the kamehameha, to the anrgy trunks theme that plays when gohan starts to doubt himself, and finally the dragon theme that plays when all the Z fighters come together to help gohan as he finally overwhelms and obliterates cell completely. It’s just too powerful imho.
Chris Ayres as Freeza is honestly enough to make Kai worth it. He was the GOAT. I fell in love with the uncut Kai dub since it was so much closer to the actual manga. Goku actually acts like Goku was written. Just needs the more hick vocab hahaha
It's the worst that faulconer music don't even acknowledge it. Made up crap that misses the story beats and tones of the show. No silence when the music is playing. Not sure what's worse fans of that dub, the music or the voice acting.
How is the final conversation with freaza slower in Z? Freaza said 10 words and got like a 5 word comeback but said like 25 in Kai just sounds kind of flip flopped Also not really cool adding extra dialogue just to give the point to Kai

Original Funimation Dub with the original Japanese soundtrack and openings is the version I like the best. Watching Zs clips without Faulconers music is incredibly painful. Faulconers music enchanes everything and compliments the dub perfectly, if the music was incorporated in this most almost all my points would go to Z.
Because I actually saw both with the original music, I can imagine both in that way LOL I actually still mostly agree with the rankings here. There are some that definitely would have been better with the proper music but I actually do like some of the dub in Kai.
Z absolutely clears with the OG music. Kai does have some good vice acting but there were moments where Z was just so raw that a redo doesn’t improve it
Exactly this. Without the Faulconer music Kai crushes Z, but with it? Much much closer. SO many of the Frieza scenes are elevated, especially the SSJ transformation and Goku's 20x Kaioken Kamehameha!

I have a Z box set and when I watch watch it the Funimation dub isn’t that bad on the earlier episodes, but when that shift to Funimations first dubbing mid Freeza arc the quality dramatically drops.
just accept that kai has mostly superior dialogue and dubbing lmao
Great video. Honestly, I prefer Kai's iteration more so as I grew up with it, but I can see the merit and appreciation for Z and I respect where it shines. Seeing the comparisons for this arc, I'm pretty satisfied with what I heard for both sides.
The highs of the original dub are a lot better than Kai, but Kai is consistently excellent

Different timelines? Yeah, that's why abridge shouldn't be used for comparison at all to the official stuff.

No. Cell Arc and Buu Saga is still better in Kai. You will see in the comparison.

Kai is still better in the Majin Buu Saga. But Z is much closer for Majin Buu Saga because of production increase as well as the actors were giving more time.
Man... original Funi dub Z without the Faulconer music hurts to listen to in some of these scenes. Makes me appreciate that soundtrack that much more!

this video format is awesome, good video dude!

Even if the author forgets stuff, I don’t think that negates his intentions for the characters
Kai dub is better in everything apart from the buu arc
I think we can all agree that Kai did wonders for the Sayain and Frieza saga.
I have a few gripes about the android and buu saga. Mostly music choice but that was apparently because it was poorly cobbled together.
I personally have to go for dbz on the ginyu introduction. Jeice's voice actor just NEEDS to be aussie
The Original Z cooked with a Lot of Vegeta's moments especially in the Android and Buu Saga but overall I prefer Kai
Bruh frieza’s not well executed “i hate you!” Line and goku’s cornily smug “Friend…” line in the dbz version made me laugh way more than I expected!

You should do that for every cannon arc. And Dbz Kai destroys DBZ in EVERY ARC. YES, INCLUDING Majin Buu. WHile Dbz improves by then. Kai still beats it in dialogue and overall acting.

We don’t want to read the mango. If we’re nostalgic, what does that make y’all?
@@Cutthroatrah lol, a lot of us grew up with the old dub and read the manga later, so nostalgia doesnt apply. The manga is the real DBZ and doesn't have dumbed down dialogue like the z dub. I'd say the abridged did the best job at Vegeta's and about the dragon ball even though it wasn't realistic

Lmao wait what, why is there Faulconer music playing in the Kai version?
Lets be fair. Nothing will ever compare to the Bruce Falconer soundtrack. It is unparalleled scoring.
Nah that’s more a personal thing. I think the Falconer track is made overrated and the Kai score is way better.
Kenjis music was dope plagiarism aside Kikuchi is just fucking garbage

I personally disagree, because it’s Vegeta, and I mean early Z Vegeta, not end of Boo Saga Vegeta.

Looking forward to the Android/Cell comparison.
I really dislike Kai, personally.
take your nostalgia glasses off old man the z dub sucks and kai has way more iconic lines in the cell saga alone
Let’s be honest: the BEST dub for when Vegeta realizes Gohan tricked him is DBZ Abridged.
I like this! Your math is off but other than that, this is good
It's an editing mistake
Vegeta's monologue in the original when he was dying was more emotional and crazy good. In Kai it was kind of dull. That alone made the original better.
Alr no Z nostalgia getting in the way. Can we all agree ginyu force entrance in kai was the greatest thing know to man
Wait you left out where he says hes gonna blow goku up just like he did to krillin scene
Now this here, is truly unbiased.
Chris Ayres as Freeza is honestly enough to make Kai worth it.
He was the GOAT.
I fell in love with the uncut Kai dub since it was so much closer to the actual manga. Goku actually acts like Goku was written. Just needs the more hick vocab hahaha

Kai does have some good vice acting but there were moments where Z was just so raw that a redo doesn’t improve it
@blackthegrey7694 Absolutely true. The MAIN moments of Z cannot be redubbed any better or scored any better 💯
Exactly this. Without the Faulconer music Kai crushes Z, but with it? Much much closer. SO many of the Frieza scenes are elevated, especially the SSJ transformation and Goku's 20x Kaioken Kamehameha!
