MATERIALS:
PEN: A Pigma Micron pen, 02 nib.
PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
Arches 140lb Hot Press Paper for this Video.
My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
Winsor Newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green.
DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia.
BRUSH: An inexpensive, Curry's brand, 3/8 brush.

Very realistic and yet artistic. The result is absolutely amazing. I liked the wintery colors as they gave a sensation of coldness. As for the little twigs, your steady brush strokes gave them liveliness and tinted them with warmth.
I have always found it difficult to start up with a bird's head. Now, your video has enlightened me to use your method of dotting the head and the feathers as to give an indication for feathers' existence.
Awkward enough, our bird has died this morning. I felt this video was in its memory.

I have very recently found your wonderful videos. Enjoying and trying to learn from an obvious master. Chickadees do have totally black eyes- I regularly watch them at our feeders with binoculars

Most songbirds, including chickadees, have extremely dark eyes that appear black unless under extreme close up.
You are amazing.......how about a Cardinal? I have seen some on RUclips, however, they aren't you! LOL.....Thank you again from one of your anxious students.

Hi Peter I love all of your tutorials and would like to know if you use photographs for reference or does your work come from your imagination.
Ideas come from my imagination/memory, my own photos or by painting on location. If I use a reference photo it will be included in the video. This one was from imagination with photos used for markings only.

You could try Woodwards Framing.
Why do you choose sepia over a single pigment color like burnt umber? They look similar in the video.
Sepia is a very different color and I also prefer how it mixes with my other colors.
You make it look so easy! But I know it is not...

Great painting. You are very easy to follow and make painting look really easy. I have stretching a little each day but haven't sketched on regular sketch paper. is there any advice that you can give on getting started on sketch paper before I actually paint? Can I transfer on sketches to watercolor paper? Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. Dana
Always a good idea to do a few sketches before painting to work out the best composition. Then transfer a light outline sketch to watercolor paper
